This place is very disappointing. I ordered my son's birthday cake online one week in advance and followed up with a call 2 days prior. However when we went to pick the cake up, I was told that the cake was not made, because somebody made a mistake on the date of the order. Imagine when you need a birthday cake in 1 hour for a once in a year occasion and there is no alternative option left. We had to settle for a pre-made cake that is completely out of style and nothing close to what I ordered. Never never come back to this place again! read more

2 stars for service. Teen girls seemed to have no idea what they were doing. Screwed up my husbands order twice for lack of paying attention and walking off before he finished asking a question. We ended up leaving with a cookie ice cream sandwich that the was cut in half instead of a custom ice cream sandwich with half of one flavor and half of another. He felt bad so paid for it anyway (and it was NOT good). Then he got a cone but while he was asking for a sugar cone they walked away again and gave him the plain one. C'mon. I had no idea Abbott's existed in New England until I visited a shop in Rochester, NY and saw a store listing! This custard is worth driving to Western NY for, but now I don't have to! This is not your regular soft ice cream - it's much creamier. I plan to try one of their cakes the next time I need a cake! Only downside is there's no real seating - just two benches side by side, and some chairs outside which would be great when the weather is warm. read more

Not as good as I remember in Wisconsin but decent frozen custard

I reviewed the Brighton location but decided to review Needham too, since I've been there a bunch too. I love them both! If you're unfamiliar with frozen custard, then know it's NOTHING like the "custard" you have for dessert (in pies, etc.). It's more like ice cream or frozen yogurt (and not as common in New England as it is in some other regions of the US). You should also know that Abbott's is a nationwide chain. Flavors are pretty standard and limited -- what you'd expect from a national chain -- but all the flavors I've had have been wonderful. I usually get a hot fudge sundae with 2 random custard flavors. Service is always wonderful, too, as is owner Mary Pat. I love Abbott's for what it is, and I go there whenever I can (sometimes I run there, get custard, and take the bus home)! read more

If I had to make a last meal request, it would include Abbott's chocolate almond frozen custard! It's THAT good! All the flavors are fabulous-- strawberry really tastes like the fruit, as does the incredible banana-- but I love the creamy chocolate laced with toasted, salted almonds. It's adult ice cream! Some are so overloaded with sugar that no other flavor can shine through. Abbott's is a slow churn treat, so it is denser than any soft serve (NO comparison!) and with less fat than many ice creams. It's also served at a slightly warmer temp than many ice creams. To even think of comparing this to Dairy Queen is offensive. If you have a palate that appreciates quality, you will appreciate Abbott's. Flavors are made daily, so the board changes but chocolate, vanilla & chocolate almond are always on the menu. My "birthday cake" this year will be an Abbott's Peanut Butter Pie. Mmmm. It makes it worth getting older! read more

My husband and I stopped by here after eating at Sweet Basil next door. My best friend from high school was originally from Wisconsin and always raved about frozen custard, so I was excited to finally try it. The girl behind the counter was friendly and let me taste a few before I decided (coconut didn't have much flavor, but black raspberry was delcious). This was wonderfully thick and creamy. A real treat! My husband chose butterscotch which was too sweet for my taste, but he finished it very quickly. read more

I had never tried frozen custard before going to Abbott's a few years ago and I'm sorry I waited so long, particularly since I went to school not far up the road! It is simply amazing; similar to ice cream but just a little different. And now, any time I pass through Needham or Brighton and have the time, I definitely swing by Abbott's. It is so good. They also have other treats featuring their custard, such as cookie sandwiches. Also, they do catering! They're very quick with estimates and have excellent prices. There haven't been many mentions of their catering on Yelp but that's because they've mostly been doing corporate catering. My teen girls and I LOVE Abbott's Frozen Custard, and make excuses to go if we are anywhere near Needham. Lately there's been a lot of popularity of Frozen Yogurt places (which I can't stand!!!), but Abbott's Frozen Custard is SO delicious, super thick and smooth and creamy....omg I want some right now!! It's always a chore to explain to Newbies what Custard really is, (original ice cream recipes use egg yolk, this is custard), but I like to feel I am enlightening the world and enjoy getting each new person to love Frozen Custard and see that it's better than Frozen Yogurt. read more

I think I love frozen custard better than ice cream. We tried Abbott's Frozen Custard today in Needham and I was quite impressed. It's a small shop on Great Plain Ave -- neat and clean. They are a franchise and the proprietess is a sweetheart. We tried a kiddie vanilla w/ jimmies, kiddie vanilla w/ mini m&ms, and a peanut butter cup sundae. My kids promptly sat on the floor to enjoy their treats -- we couldn't even get them up to go out and sit on the benches outside. Hubby and I split (90% -10%) our sundae. The custard has a smooth texture -- seemed to be much creamier than ice cream. Because of todays crappy 4th of July weather she only had a few of her flavors going. We could have had chocolate, chocolate almond, or coffee as well. She does wonderful frozen chocolate covered bananas too! I saw frozen custard pies and other little goodies in her display case. All of her candy/ nut mix-ins looked fresh as well. We will definitely be hitting her shop when we are in the area. read more

The custard is very good. It is usually a great place to get some treats. The last time I went when I walked in the employees were sitting on the ground eating ice cream with their fingers. They then got up and I ordered a custard browning sandwich and she didn't use gloves. Overall it is usually good. read more

As a Sweet Basil regular and the daughter of a Rochester (technically Irondequoit) native, I was beyond excited to see an Abbott's franchise in Mass. I've been eating Abbott's since I was a kid (at Charlotte, and then riding the carousel!) and we always try to get to Abbott's as many times as possible when we're up visiting the family. I usually go with the half chocolate half vanilla; it's classic and amazing. Custard is just richer and creamier and generally more delicious than ice cream. I've also fallen in love with their purple cow custard (black raspberry with frozen blueberries and chunks of chocolate in it). I recently got a pint of raspberry ripple cheesecake custard from the Brighton location, and it was equally delicious. Because I don't live close by, I always seem to be grabbing a pint, and I haven't found one I don't love yet! read more

Very good and yummy ice cream. What they have will have you moan after each delicious bite. Not much in the way of selection though. I suppose that that what happens with a small shop that make their own right their on the spot. Also, it feels a bit expensive.
