Of my seven years in Rochester, somehow it took me until the last one to make it to the classic custard location--probably because I'm a city kid and these are mostly suburban. Anyhow, I had some time to kill on the lake, Abbott's was convenient, so I figured I'd see what the hype was about. And it's tasty custard! Chocolate almond had a nice chocolate flavor, a texture that was satisfyingly thick and not too wispy (unlike much commercial custard), and delightful almond chunks. This is the original location of Abbott's, which is pretty awesome because it's such a wonderful chain that is all over Western NY now, and thrilling kids and grownups and Starlight alike. You know which character from NCIS eats here? Abb-y. This particular location has no indoor seating, so you have to get your custard from the window and then eat it on outside benches or in your car and so on. That sentence was a little long-winded. From now on I'll be more Abb-rupt. Here's what I like about this one: (1) It's the original and that makes it awesome (2) It's literally right across the street from Ontario State Beach aka Charlotte Beach - - - which is by the way one of the best beaches in the country that I've been to (3) The servers are pretty friendly (4) Their vanilla custard tastes as fresh and creamy as the best Abbott's locations (5) Their Lemon Sorbet is one of the most delicious Lemon things I've ever eaten (6) Starlight came here with me so I have a sentimental attachment to it (7) The cone wasn't stale or hard like some of the Abbott's have (8) Did I mention they have custard But this place is not Abb-solutely perfect. Abbotts/Bill Grays share space like Taco Bell/KFC do in many places. However this location is only Abbott's. There is no Bill Grays. So it's all about the custardishness. And this is the original Abbott's which is awesome. Doesn't custard kind of look like what gets produced when you self-Abb-use? Well not if you drink enough water, actually. It's one of my "best 5 custards I've ever had." I think I like custard more than ice cream, more than fro yo, less than real gelato. For custard specifically, which is sort of like soft-serve-but-creamier, the best in the country are Leon's in Milwaukee and Nielsen's in Vienna, VA, and then Abbott's in 3rd. When moving to Rochester years ago I was lucky enough to be in another one of the few cities in the US that was blessed with frozen custard - it was somewhat of a rarity back then. Abbott's has always been a great treat at any of it's locations. Cones, dishes, sundaes, and Turtles always delicious and reasonably priced for this delicious sin. When the weather gets hot the lines can be very long but it is worth the wait. This location gets most of the action up at the lake but in the nearby Ferry building there is another location and it is pretty quiet so if the line is long on Lake Ave just walk the two blocks to their other location. read more

Came here after a nice long walk in the summer heat from Turning Point Park. Ordered the chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich, which I am a big fan of (along with the Oreo sandwich). However, their freezers need to be at a warmer setting for the the ice cream sandwiches so they can be ready for customers to eat right away. They are served to you hard as rocks. You may lose a tooth if you attempt to eat it too soon. While my friends were able to eat their ice cream cones right away, I had to wait an excruciating 10 minutes for my sandwich to soften enough to be edible. read more

If you want a taste of Rochester other than the prerequisite garbage plate you need to get yourself some Abbott's Frozen Custard. They are known for that Chocolate Almond yes it's fabulous, but anything they have as a special is terrific. Sure you can go safe and get vanilla or whatever and you will be happy. You can get cones, waffle cones, a cup or even a sundae. This location is basically walk up, they have outdoor seating. The staff is friendly and service is fast considering it's by The Ontario Beach Park/Lake Ontario. I think if you come up to the lake and the weather is lovely get yourself a custard. This is a great Summer or warm day treat. The people watching around here is great too. But all the custards they make are excellent and I think even jaded out of towners will like this. I'm a transplant who's now here almost four years and I enjoy going to one of the locations for my frozen custard treat. Going to Abbots in the Summertime Is really good Nice hot days By the lake Summer breeze Makes me feel fine

One of the highlights of Rochester, I'm pretty sure everyone in Rochester has had this custard at one point. With the amount of options that Abbotts offers, there is plenty of custard selections to choose from ranging from the classic vanilla to even some odd eccentric combinations. I personally can recommend the simple vanilla custard in any size you desire, it's worth every dollar that you have to pay for it. As there are many of these fabulous custard emporiums scattered about Rochester, this is probably the best one out of all them which just so happens to be the original one. A major benefit that this Abbott's has is it's prime location right on the beach and pier with a great view of Lake Ontario given the right time of day. It's an ideal destination when you want to spend a day doing absolutely nothing but sit around all day on the hot sand while taking in some waves along the way. The convenience of Abbott's allows you to take your custard down to the shores with you to enjoy a frozen delight underneath the hot summer sun. On the other hand, if you do plan on taking this on the go, stick with the dishes because even though the cones are amazing to eat, by the time you get down to the beach or the pier, the custard will most likely be completely melted by the summer sun so make sure to eat and walk for pure enjoyment. I choose just to eat by the store but sadly, there is no interior you can go into to keep the custard from melting but their are a few tables on the outside where you can sit down and enjoy the treat...just mind the many bugs and sticky surfaces, napkins are a must! The servers always seem to be positive either because they get to work by the beach, they are custard fanatics, or they are just generally happy people to begin with. I'm not complaining at all because it makes for great conversation between them while custard is being made, given there are no long lines which is highly unlikely. I did forget to mention that the lines can be unbelievably long on hot days so plan to come early if you are really craving Abbotts custard. This is if not, definitely ranks high on my list of best ice cream places I've eaten at even though this is technically custard and not ice cream but the difference is only slight. I will continue to give Abbotts repeat visits every year the time comes and I hope others do the same, it's practically a staple of Rochester! read more

Abbott's has the best soft serve ice cream in the United States if not the world. However and mysteriously the Bill Gray's Restaurant in Henrietta for example which serves Abbott's chocolate custard makes a much better chocolate milk shake with its Abbott's chocolate custard than does Abbott's in Brighton with the very same Abbott's chocolate custard. So oddly, I will get custard cones at either location but only milkshakes at Bill Gray's. Don't know whether it is a difference in the suppliers for the other ingredients in the milkshakes or relative quantities of ingredients or how they are made but there is a definite difference in the qualities of the end products. read more

I rarely go more than 3 times a year, as the value for what you get is poor at best. $6.85 for the sundae that was mostly whipped cream. This Abbott's has a great location. Right on the lake near Ontario Beach Park and the pier. My wife and I have been going here for a long time. Arthur Abbott first started selling his custard in 1902, and opened the location at the corner of Lake Avenue and Beach Avenue in 1926. So this place has been here for 88 years and counting. Sometimes the lines are slow. I counted about 90 people standing there, when across the street at another place I saw 2 people waiting in line. That should tell you something. Not only is the location good but the custard, sundaes, and turtle treats are simply delicious. So go get an Abbott's and take a walk along the beach and the pier. They stay open a bit later during between Memorial Day and Labor Day when Charlotte is jam packed with people. I will say that even as an almond-lover, the chocolate almond flavor is very heavy on the nuts and they're slightly salty, so if you don't like a lot of nuts or the sweet-salty mix, I would just go for an almond topping instead. I ordered the chocolate almond thinking it would have almond flavor (like Wegman's seasonal nutty pumpkin spice latte, but that's another review); however it was actual almonds mixed in. Hands-down this is the best place to get ice cream. Abbotts is fantastic, and has been for years, and the original beach side location adds an extra appeal to the whole experience. If you haven't had Abbotts before, I highly recommend you try it at any of the locations. However, this is the one you'll need to visit to get the full experience. The ice cream is fantastic, and many argue it's the best. In my opinion, it certainly ties for first place. I've had none better, but I'm sure I've had some that's just as good. Also, this location is ideal for singles just passing through, couples, large groups, kids, adults... anyone! Their diverse menu is sure to include something for everybody. A couple of things to note is that this location is purely outdoors. If the weather's bad, go across the street to the terminal and eat indoors. Sometimes the lines can be long too, but Abbotts is usually good at managing long lines to get everyone through with relative haste. Another thing is that this is a little pricey. It's not "expensive", but it's probably higher than most other places. The price has steadily climbed, like most other places. It's high enough to deter people from going frequently, but it's not terribly high. Besides, the experience and ambiance are sort of worth it. Also, this is what's responsible for the entire grounds of the Charlotte Beach area being covered in a thin coat of ice cream. read more

It's a beautiful location right across the street from Ontario beach at the end of Lake Rd. I would always grab something to eat here before or after a show at the Penny Arcade. The lines can get pretty long here but they keep it moving and they're usually open late.
