Good ok' fashioned family fun at Abel's Acres. This is a smaller stop in Apple Hill, but I'd venture to say they've likely got some of the best food offerings in the whole area. Let's start with the fun. Midweek there's really very little going on, but you can get an idea of what's happening once the weekend rolls around. There's a ton of parking, right in front and a big lot across the street. Walking in you'll find their store, with a big bakery window, country candy and other knicknacks, and a lot more. On the side of the building there are a lot of tents for various other vendors who are there on the weekends. Right out back is the little restaurant, and their menu looks good! Teriyaki makes up a lot of it, and there's a little Hawaiian flare to it too, plus some chalkboard specials and sauces and sides you can take home. Beyond that there's a little mining station. You can buy bags of dirt and take them to the area and pan them to uncover various rocks and minerals. They also have a little maze for the kiddos AND we found the only ponies in Apple Hill. You can't ride them, but they're friendly enough to stay close so you can pet em! If you don't already know, Apple Hill Grower's Association is a popular destination in Placerville and Camino, CA, during the month of October. Amongst the collection of farms that bring lots of family fun, fresh baked goods, and beautiful scenery, is Abel's Apple Acres. Abel's has it all-a cute barn filled with pies, pastries and sweets, holiday decorations, books, pantry items, hot food for lunch, maze, gemstone mining, benches and bug shelters for picnics, craft fair, pony rides (currently closed due to Covid) and tranquility. The quaint farm like, simple times, tranquil environment immersed in the forest is enough to keep me coming back to Apple Hill time and time again, but having fun farms that provide experiences like award winning caramel apples, mazes and gem stone mining bring that experience much further to the point of tradition making. For the latest visit, I planned on visiting 3 farms with my kids but only ended up going to two since the kids were having so much fun relaxing, running around and munching on apple goods. Abel's (along with many other farms on the hill), lends itself to good old fashion fun. Their goods are honestly fresh and delicious. We tried an apple donut, apple pie caramel apple, and apple empanada. They were so good that my kids kept on giving me a thumbs up with every bite. Let's just say that we left the barn with our hands full. If you want to know a secret, their apple pie caramel apples were so delicious that I would give them out as gifts to every single person I know for any occasion. You must try them!!! Fresh picked apples dipped in delicious caramel, white chocolate fudge, and cinnamon sugar... if there's something to represent all that the hill has to offer, this would definitely be one of them along with apple cider and apple donuts. For hot foods, I got the tri tip sandwich with onions which was loaded with lots of meat. It was fresh and under seasoned. I'm guessing they do that intentionally so that their customers can adjust to their taste. They make that easy with the condiments they supply. My kids were also happy with their hot dog meal that came with a side of chips (potato salad available), crackers, lollipop and milk. Not all farms on the hill serve hot lunch so don't forget to check the Apple Hill guide "Cider Press" on the Apple Hill website to explore your options. Notes: -It gets crazy busy during October so visiting on the weekdays and/or right when they open is ideal to maximize fun without too much wait. Alternatively, visiting late September is great since crowds are absent. Check website for opening and closing dates. -Don't forget to bring a mask. Hand Sanitizer and handwashing stations available. We came here for some fun for the kids on Veterans Day during the COVID-19 pandemic. On arrival going into the store we were greeted by a rather long line spanning across the entire store. No worries, the line moved rather quick actually. We ended up getting hot apple cider, a slice of old fashion apple pie with ice cream, slice of apple and pumpkin pie, an apple crisp, and a dozen apple donuts. During the cold weather the hot cider and the warm apple crisp really hit the spot. The star of the show were the donuts. They were still warm and with the crispy outside and warm inside of dough and apple chunks. Tip: they are waaaaay better devoured right away rather than as take home. The outdoor seating area was very nicely done. We ended up scoring an enclosed room. The rooms are made of screen doors and walls so plenty of ventilation. After the meal, we walked down the short path to the maze and gem mining area for some fun for the kids. The maze was three bucks for the day. The gem mining has a price range depending on what bag of dirt you want to buy. We went with the seven dollar bag. The kids went into the maze about four or five times. The walls are rather low so the parents can somewhat keep an eye on the kids, although they disappear in and out depending on their height and yours. This place not only has a cool orchard for your Apple and souvenir needs, but it has a farm where you can feed the horse and a small hay maze (for additional fee). This is the best place I've found to get caramel apples as they provide so many different combinations, my favorite is caramel with almonds! The food is decent but nothing to rave about, my tri-tip meal tasted like Arby's and my dates chicken dinner was actually raw in some parts. I would encourage you to find food at others I've reviewed. If you're looking to do a little knick knack shopping then check out about half a dozen tents or the main store as it sells cute holiday decorations. I love to visit Abel's Acres when in the Apple Hill area. Hands down, they make the best apple pies!

My fiancé and I went on a Sunday wanting to explore another spot. Got there at 3:45pm. Enjoyed bbq on the patio, went to get a desert where they were out of everything and only had blueberry apple pie. My partner went to the (male)rest room and a female employee came in to clean while he was in. He asked her for privacy as she replied, "no I'm cleaning". Another man came in and asked her to step out and again said "It's okay" and stayed in. I used the female one where there ended up being no soap and very minimal paper products of all kind. We come out at 4:17pm and were greeted buy a man who firmly stated "You need to go" pointing to the door. Behind him was two more employees waiting to escort us out. We were suddenly the only customers. I stated to one of the employees, your front door along with website states your closed at 530pm. He replied "It doesn't matter" practically pushing us out the door. In Apple Hill peak season I would hope/ think some decency would be accounted for along with apple treats. Thought this was gonna be a decent spot, looks like decent amount of reviews i see now are about very poor customer service. Sucks for being a "family" place. Will not be back. read more

10/4/2019: Can you say, "Candied Apple Haven?" I know you can! Abel's Apple Acres is THE only place buying a wide assortment of candied apples! Last time I attempted visiting Abel's Apple Acres, the line was outside the main entrance winding towards the right side of the building; thus, I couldn't buy my candied apple supplies I wanted-WAAAAAH! THIS time, there wasn't a line so, I happily bought four different types of candied apples in order, keeping my candied apple cravings at bay. However, no sooner I inhaled one candied apple, I discovered I couldn't refrain inhaling the next candied apple! OOOOF: Control, control, control is all I could do in order, refraining devouring the other three candied apples~OY-EVAY! In order refraining inhaling the three other candied apples, I purposely hid them in the back of my refrigerator's vegetable bin! Elated, it took me a month inhaling the remaining three candied apples-YAY; however, I must return to Abel's Apple Acres because I plan giving candied apples as Christmas gifts! read more

First stop on our Apple Hill adventure! After many visits over the years and even trying out some different stands, Abel's Acres continues to be my absolute favorite stop at Apple Hill. I love the fact that over the years it's grown yet hasn't changed much. They still offer the same delicious baked goods, caramel apples and fudge and their amazing bottled cider sauce. Plus they've added more activities for the kiddies so it's a really great spot for families with little ones. Nice farm for young kiddos maybe ages 2-5 but that's about it. The older kids would be bored and make sure you stop by on the weekend during the October weekdays only the store was open. I did stop in around 4 for a apple fritter but they were all out so we came back the next day since everyone raves about the apple fritters here. I can say it was good but not the best I have had. Able's Apples was my favorite place to visit/shop. I always made it my last stop so I could shop and enjoy the surroundings with less crowd. I shopped there for 6 years, but sopped going. I haven't been back in 15 years. Here is why...My son was 5 at the time, he was at the fudge counter while I was waiting in line to buy a buttermilk apple pie, a family favorite, my son was looking at all the candy. He wasn't touching or bothering in anyway. He asked the the older lady tending the counter a question about one of candy pieces, and she was extremely rude to him. So, I called for him, I told him that the lady was being rude and he needed to stay away from her. Then to add fuel to the fire, I had purchased a buttermilk apple pie, I was still in line and wanted to add to my order and the cashier told me that I would have to go back through the line. Since I had already paid for my purchase. I couldn't believe it. So I took my pie and left. When I got home, I sent an email explaining what had happened and not one person from Abel's reached out. I love pie and I'm always looking to find new places to enjoy them. My brother and sister-in-law live in Roseville and were down visiting recently and brought me an unbaked frozen strawberry apple pie from Abel's Apple Acres. Since it's the holiday season, I read the directions that came with the pie and baked it as instructed. The aroma filled my house as the pie was baking and I was excited to dig-in. The pie was delicious. The crust was just the right thickness, there was a lot of fruit filling inside, the crumb topping was a nice touch and it wasn't too sweet. After I enjoyed a couple of bites, I reached into my freezer and added a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream. Oh yea, that made this even better. The pie was still fairly warm and it paired perfectly with the ice cream. I also tried an apple donut, which was also really good. My brother only brought me two of those, but they were devoured within a day or two. I had heard about Apple Hill from one of my cousins, but haven't made it up there. After enjoying the apple donuts and blueberry apple pie, I will definitely try to get there later this year. The old fashion apple pie is so good, whether you get it freshly made that morning or if you take a frozen one home, these are the best apple pies. But I would say my favorite part of this farm is the vendors, and more specifically the crystal vendor right in the front. We like to call him, "the crystal man", he has so much knowledge on all the crystals and will answer all questions you need such as identifying and meanings for all crystals. They have hand made jewelry and jewelry from Peru. All the crystals are very high quality and something that is very important is that they are ethically mined and manufactured, this IS the #1 place to get your crystals, where you're a newbie or a long time rockhound. This was one the more low key bakeries we visited but might be a favorite just because of the customer service. The lady that helped us was so sweet and welcoming that it made me want to buy 10 of everything. Their fritters were amazing. I called it a fronut - cross between a glazed donut and a fritter. They are tied with High Hills fritter. Their donuts are also amazing but not as many variety of flavors as High Hill. She even threw in an extra donut and a piece of their award winning caramel. This was my 1st stop on my day trip to Apple Hill and it did not disappoint! The outdoor temperature was reaching 102F and the air was filled with smoke from the fires (God be with the fire fighters), but that didn't stop the friendly people at Abel's. I was told that everything from the pies, delicious fudge & candied apples to the home decorations were all handmade (good quality- no worries). There is also an eatery in the back and the food smelled fabulous!! An abundance of sitting areas too. Oh- and the view; I couldn't get enough of the breathtaking mountain scenery (but the smokey air did take my breath away a bit). Abel's apple acres has more to it than apples. As some of the many stops we did on this day, this my favorite stop. As many had the apple donuts, abels carried a blueberry apple pie that tastes like a apple crisp but loaded also with blueberries. The whole family enjoyed this pie and i got my blueberry fix satisfied! They had over 8 varieties of pies and made fresh each day. The apple cider was on point and one of the better priced selections too, so we grabbed a gallon! While the apple donut looks a bit smaller than an average size donut it is made like a cake like donut but packs the flavor! This too was the better priced over all from the day of stops. Easy parking and easy to find so 2 stars there. Unfortunately, their lunch was awful. Ordered a few things but what was comical was the "kids meal" of "chicken strips" (says includes a cookie, fritos, and a treat). Ummm Definitely served us frozen Dino nuggets, a bag of lays, and a singular knock-off Oreo. Lol! It was so bad it made us laugh!!! The caramel apples were old tasting. Also bought frozen pie.... This place is cute. My family goes to Apple Hill every year and this is one of the places we always stop at. They have some little vendor booths that sell awesome stuff for christmas gifts. This year they had an amazing balsamic and olive oil stand and we were able to try strawberry peach balsamic vinegar! This would be a 5 star place except this year when we ordered our food it was just not good. My husband ordered a cheeseburger well done. The woman who took our order explained that they are all "kind of well done, we cook them ahead of time and then keep them in a tub of au jus to keep them moist, so that they stay at temperature". Ew. Just ew. My niece who normally loves burgers was super grossed out and so were we. The burger was described as an elementary school lunch burger, we took one bite and that was enough for us. The fries are super good, we got the garlic ones. By the time we finished our food they were out of apple donuts so we just made our way to another orchard.
