That comes into play with the period decor in here, and apparently they tried calling themselves "Peaky Barista". However, customers didn't gravitate to the name, so they switched it to the current name. Now you know. Jamie W and I were in the mood for some caffeine after downing a couple of dogs and a papaya drink at nearby Gray's Papaya (review: https://yelp.to/IiUu4gxMSv). We almost turned around when we saw all the tables were occupied, but then the small table next to the busy restroom suddenly opened up. We swooped in before a laptopper could make a move. We ordered a couple of $6 Large Iced Lattes (Photo 2), and they managed to satisfy. In the warmer seasons, two tables are set up outside for those who want to sip their Joe en plein air. I come here for the strawberry matcha latte, which I would rate a 10/10. The strawberry flavor comes through strongly, and I do appreciate that the drink isn't oversaturated with milk. It's not bitter either and perfectly sweet. I was turned on to Matto by a shop owner who'd given me $3 cash change on a large credit purchase. Thanking her, I quipped "You can't get a good cup of coffee in New York for $3".... until I found Matto and its exceptional blend of coffee. Service is quick and friendly. The shop itself is really bright and clean, very inviting. There were plenty of seats available so we sat down and enjoyed our bread. It was SO good. Cabuc coffee recently opened up in the UES and it is quickly in my top 5 coffee in the UES (talking…read moremostly the 70s and 80s). As a developing coffee snob, I have to say the coffee in UES has extremely disappointed me, and especially near the hospital since so many businesses nearby can get away by being less than great due to their proximity to a constant flux of customers. Cabuc Coffee fights that paradigm by serving quality coffee, with really beautifully crafted latte art, and a really strong cappuccino (my baseline for testing a coffee shop). They have a very balanced menu, with a cool lime refresher I really loved as a cooldown noncaffeinated option. Their iced cappuccinos maintain the characteristic cappuccino cap of foam on top (other places do not do this) so they go the extra mile. If you have more of a sweet tooth and want a sweet drink they have a variety of sweet iced coffee drinks, and several different syrups (they use sauce here) to choose from. The other thing they're doing is bringing CULTURE to the UES. They are Turkish, and offer turkish coffee on the menu, and if you get it to stay it's super cute because they give you a little turkish delight and some water to enjoy it with. So adorable. The space is immaculately clean, and the vibes are on point. It's a beautiful, sleek, modern space that feels welcoming and breathable. They are such a wonderful addition to the UES with good espresso and care to their craftsmanship. Welcome Cabuc :).
