    Banh mi

I've been on the hunt for the best banh mi in New York City and honestly been underwhelmed, but Banh is the top contender at the moment. I ordered the pork sandwich and the pork was very smoky. I think the texture paired really well with the crispiness of the banh mi. It was also a pretty generous portion overall - very flavorful great price highly recommend.

Been to Banh twice as it seems to be a popular place ~10-15min from Columbia campus, and it's definitely a gem! I've been mostly during the weekday evenings, which tend to have a wait - for 2pp it could be anything from 15-30min as they usually open at 6PM on weekdays. The inside is a pretty intimate space, lots of seats for 2pp, with a cozy and warm ambiance. Service is always so kind and on top of it, even when they're so packed for dinners. First time I visited, I got the house beef pho. It's is a decent pho, though the broth was pretty dominated by the ginger. I don't mind ginger so I liked it, but the rest of the broth wasn't as flavorful, probably on the blander side for me. Friend and I shared the banh chung as an app, and that was less crispy more soft, chewier texture than expected. Also not super flavorful, so it was alright. Second time I visited, I ordered the bun cha, which was a little more up my alley and had the most amazing pork skewers. The meat was charred and caramelized so succulently, and the egg rolls, noodles, veggies all work so well doused with the fish sauce - absolutely chef's kiss, so definitely would get that again!

This satay is FIRE! Don't sleep on it, it's delicious!!

First Impressions: it's small and cozy. It's cold outside so they set up chairs in a little protected plastic awning away from the cold so that was nice. Indoors is very clean and well set up. Wish it was bigger but still found it charming The Noms: Cha gio (egg rolls): very crunchy and flavorful. I really enjoyed this dish especially wrapped in lettuce and dipped in fish sauce and their table side satay sauce. Perfectly spicy, I immediately wished I had more food to dip in it. Must try with whatever you can! House Pho Bo (beef): I'm most disappointed in this dish. The broth was very bland and I had to put a ton of hoisin and satay in it to give it flavor. Also, no sriracha... but could be because this is served northern style. Also, one tiny slice of lime was not enough. The noodles was generous and perfectly cooked. Could have been more beef for the rice noodle ratio. Bun Cha: my favorite dish of the night. I'd been craving it and it was really good. Reminded me of the street food bun cha I had in Hanoi last year. In Conclusion: food was very good. I'm looking forward to trying other dishes on the menu. Skip the pho next time, but Will def come back for the bun cha and cha gio.

Came here with a friend during the coldest wether cause I was craving some warm broth. We got the egg cream coffees which were absolutely incredible. I got the house beef pho which was so good, including the broth. The people were nice. There was a wait on a Sunday afternoon but we just had a beer next door while we waited. The staff was nice, the place was so bright and cozy. Loved it and will be back soon!

Everything at Banh is AMAZING. Highly recommend grabbing an egg cream iced coffee for brunch and definitely get a Banh mi (bbq pork is our fave). Flavors are well balanced, service is attentive, and food comes out relatively fast. Their house hot sauce is soooo tasty we even bought a little container to take home.

This is an $8 egg coffee to go. (WTF)

Once we came here for egg coffee, they were out Then we returned-- the front was packed and they didn't say anything about how to get out on the waitlist, etc, until AFTER I returned 25m later and asked about it. Friend finally got the egg coffee to go, and look:

Came here after finding out it's the origin of Banh Anh Em, which is one of my favorite Vietnamese spots in the city. The hype certainly stilll lives here, as we waited about an hour before being seated. Luckily, we didn't have to wait in line the whole time and wandered the neighborhood. When we were seated, service was quick and attentive. The staff are friendly at answering questions, and the smells are fantastic. We got the pho, bun bo hue, and the Banh cuon. The banh cuon was excellent, great flavor and texture. The pho is different from BAE, with the noodles here being the classic thin pho noodles. The broth is also much lighter, almost like a southern style. The bun Bo hue was ok. Tbh, it was a bit light in flavor, and there was really just a little spice in it that carried it. Otherwise, I wouldn't get it again. Overall, the spot is good, but the flavors just weren't quite there for me. I've heard great things about the banh mis here, but given the soup I had, I wouldn't come to this spot and would rather just visit the union square location. Wish I could give 3.5 stars.

Hands down the best Vietnamese restaurant i've been to in the city. My friend and I waited for around 45 mins for lunch on a Saturday and it was so worth it. We got the Banh Cuon ($14.95) and O.G. Banh Mi ($13.95) and both were absolutely amazing. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful and the portions are so generous for the price. You honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu and I will definitely be back to try more items. It's a small establishment so be prepared to wait or do take out. You won't be disappointed though!

WOW amazing viet food. Super flavorful especially with the peak chili sauce and hoisin. Textures were also great!! I will say the food is kind of oily and heavy but yummmm Notes: pork in bbq pork banh mi slightly dry?? Wish I could have more cilantro maybe. Chicken, og, pork for banh mis but would wanna try dipping in pho

Not much to update. Banh is still amazing; even after a trip to Hanoi and other areas of North Vietnam, I still think it's the best North Vietnamese food I've ever had. It's always worth a wait in line, which you'll need to do if you wanna eat here, since you'll need to sign up in person for the waitlist. We tried the Take/crispy rice, fried tofu, and pork floss banh mi this time, and while none of them disappointed, I personally will continue to order their basic house beef pho, with their BBH as a close second. (Also, to the group who asked for a Thai iced tea here ... they're Vietnamese, not Thai. We Asians ain't all the same; I don't go around asking for a cheeseburger at Olive Garden, lol.)

THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD!! Some of the best Vietnamese food I've had in NYC. My friend and I came for dinner on a Wednesday and waited about 20 mins for a table. I got the pink snow lychee strawberry lime slushee (perfect), then we shared the house beef pho and gà chiên (chili garlic fried chicken) banh mi. The pho was absolutely phenomenal and the bahn mi was stunning. My friend liked her iced jasmine cold brew as well. Prices are really good for the quality.

I'm always skeptical of dining destinations on the UWS and UES given both neighborhoods tend to serve as magnets of mediocrity. But Banh is an exception, offering one of the most enthralling Vietnamese menus in the city. The Saigon white coffee with a deep layer of condensed milk was of course a tempting way to start the meal. We then shared the vegetarian tofu banh mi, a vegetarian version of the crispy tofu, and the fried sticky rice. The tofu used in the banh mi had an excellent texture, with a creamy soft interior. The fried sticky rice was a bit mild in terms of seasoning and fairly dense, but paired well with the spicy ớt sa tế available on the table. (While I did not try any meat items, my non-vegetarian friend asked to note that the BBQ pork banh mi was one of the best sandwiches he's had in NY).

I got the pho ($21.78), which is steep for pho, but I guess that's Midtown prices for you. The wait was a slog--over 20 minutes for a bowl of pho, which other Yelp reviews warned about. When it finally arrived, the soup lacked that authentic pho aroma, which was a letdown. On the plus side, the beef was fresh, and the reusable to-go bag was a nice touch. Decent, but the wait and price make it hard to love. Might try again if they speed things up.

I ordered "Plain Pho", which is described as just broth and noodles, no garnish or meat. After waiting 30 minutes, for what is literally the simplest item on the menu, the bowl is brought out and it's a bowl of broth with a couple slices of chicken. No noodles. When I inquired, the server told me it's because I ordered the Plain Pho... yea and I said it comes with noodles and broth. They told me they could get me noodles, but acted like they were doing me a favor by fetching noodles for me, which was quite offputting because the noodles were quite literally half of the dish I actually ordered. How does one wait half-an-hour at a very casual fast Vietnamese food place, for premade soup and noodles, and still have the order wrong? In the end, I did get my noodles and broth, but the fact that I had to spend this much time and also justify my request for noodles (which are part of the dish) is quite insane. I put this at 2 stars for now, because I enjoyed my first time. Hopefully the service will improve.

So when my family stumbled into Pho 39, a tiny spot with just a handful of tables tucked away from the chaos outside, it felt less like finding a restaurant and more like discovering a Rebel outpost that somehow survived undetected in the middle of Imperial territory. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from a solid Vietnamese spot: pho, combination rice plates, the usual lineup. We were ready to order and move on with our lives. Then we saw the tacos. Vietnamese tacos. On the menu. Sitting right there between the banh mi and the spring rolls like they'd always belonged. Nobody in my family said anything for a full three seconds, which for us is basically a standing ovation. We ordered the duck spring rolls to start, which were fresh, well packed, and disappeared faster than a starfighter in hyperspace. For the mains we went with the beef flank pho and the banh mi combination special. The pho had a clean, well developed broth that clearly had some time put into it, and the beef flank was tender enough to make you slow down and pay attention. The banh mi combo was solid, balanced, and hit all the right notes. We did not get the tacos this visit, which means we have a built in reason to return and nobody can argue with that logic. For a small room in the middle of one of the busiest cities on the planet, Pho 39 manages to feel genuinely calm and focused.
