Authentic and cool bakery in uws. Really liked the vanilla custard pastry the most. The cherry cheese danish and the chocolate cake was ok. Would definitely recommend checking it out if in the area.

Delightful and incredibly popular place. 10:30am on a Monday and a line outside. Friendly staff, and a large selection of Hungarian pastries. Coffee and tea selection too. The atmosphere is a little bohemian and divey. A little loud because there's a ton of tables in a tight space.

Got a whole array of pastries and everything was super fresh. This place feels like a true neighborhood staple--very lively inside. Will definitely be back to try the coffee and other beverages.

Had this place on our try list and it did not disappoint! The pastries were amazing, such great flavor definitely tasted made from scratch. The staff was so nice, ordering is quick and there are little outside tables as well. Prices are so inexpensive we were surprised, better than anything we had between Central Park and Times Square.

I happened into the Hungarian Pastry Shop after touring the Cathedral at St John Divine. Loved the vibe. There were people with their laptops, people reading, & people chatting. On the recommendation of the lady behind the counter I ordered a cherry strudel and a Hungarian Coffee. The strudel was light, flakey, packed with cherries, and one of my favorite bites of this trip to NYC. The Hungarian Coffee was American coffee with almond extract, and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. YUM! I wonder if the barista at my local Starbucks can make it?? I'm going to ask! If I hadn't been on my way to a walking tour, in a different neighborhood I would have happily lingered longer! LOVED!

As someone very familiar with Hungarian cuisine, this affordable (but completely packed) little bakeshop actually somewhat impressed me! First of all, I have to mention the prices: we got 6 pastries and 2 hot chocolates for just over $40: a steal in this economy. Second, it was mostly authentic: the "francia krémes" (which they call a "Napoleon" here for some reason) was quite close to how they serve it in Hungary, save for the caramelized and sickeningly sugary top (which I skipped). The "dobos torta" had the reverse problem: its top--the eponymous "drum"--was authentic, but the meat of it far, far too chocolatey. Guys, a slice of "dobos" is NOT supposed to put you in a diabetic coma! It is not even meant to be very chocolatey! It is supposed to be much more subtle, even savory. The pastries we took home, which included several "rétesek," received high reviews as well. The servers were nice, but did not speak Hungarian. My only other critique would be that the space is incredibly cramped. You will be elbow-to-elbow with various Columbia students. My companion also told me the bathroom was filthy. If you're OK with these rougher spots, though, this cozy café is worth a visit if you want a peak at the "old country."

This place is super cute and had a line around 1130 on a Saturday. Tons of seating indoor and outdoor. I ordered the cherry cheese strudel and Hungarian iced coffee and neither were my flavor profile but I would definitely come back and try other items. Super cute spot.

Hyped up pastry shop near Columbia University. The interior is cool, the waiting line long, the staff remains lovely. The pastries and cakes were nice, but to be honest, I would not travel across town just for that purpose.

Hungarian Pastry Shop's Awesome Cherry Pie, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Apricot Hazelnut Pound Cake and Almond Horn
    Mike R.

Hungarian Pastry Shop is the perfect place to grab an old school, well prepared baked treat! Their freshly prepared desserts are outstanding for a celebration, guests, or a little self-indulgence! Having heard about this place, had not yet visited it. Everything in both cases looked enticing! It's important to note that although liking fresh cherries and certain cherry flavored things, I don't ever remembering having any form of cherry pastry before because the frequently used goopy cherry filling doesn't appeal to me. Decided to bring home a small selection of treats: Apricot Hazelnut Pound Cake, Flourless Chocolate Cake, an Almond Horn, and test out their Cherry Pie - which didn't appear to have that goopy filling. All four items were absolutely delicious! The Almond Horn was a little more like a biscotti than similar elsewhere, but still awesome! The memorable, excellent Cherry Pie (my reco now) won out by far! Yum!!! Would definitely recommend Hungarian pastry shop pastries to go or enjoy with a coffee or other beverage inside!

The inside of the cafe is so cute and the pastries and coffee options are unique! I got the russian latte and it tasted like a mocha and the balaclava was delicious also. The total was about $10.42, which isn't too bad for a NYC cafe.

Nice outdoor seating but there's normally a line on the weekend. The lindzer cookie was really good and I loved the texture. The black sesame pastry was fine. It was a bit too dense and too much filling

Bonita Atmósfera y muy gradable lugar y cafe estupendo y no se diga la panadería woow 100

They do get tough to make but while I was waiting to be seated, I saw a few people put their name down and the wait time was hours (for lunch) The location is small a quaint, hence the small amount of reservation. I believe it seats about 23 if memory serves me correctly. We came by after a run and were VERY glad there's AC inside. We ordered the breakfast plate, tuna melt and potato pancake. Food came pretty quickly. Our seats had a great view of the staff working in the kitchen. The potato pancake was very crunch and tasteful, a bit on the salty side but paired well with the breakfast plate. Tuna melt was the main event, and it was as creamy as I imagined. I heard they were out after we ordered but the chef provided another 5 orders. I'd definitely try to visit before they close. They're going to relocate but no timeline on when or where!

It's difficult to find Hungarian products in Northern New Jersey let alone at reasonable prices and at this quality level. I must add that their apricot jam has the right texture, no added sugar however the sweetness of the fruit remains. I love it. They also offer torta, punies, kremes/sampit, spices and seasonal candies.
