The coffee was okay, but nothing special. Unfortunately, the customer service was terrible. We purchased coffee there, but I was finishing an ice cream from Ben & Jerry's (they also sell coffee). We were told it was "company policy" that I couldn't sit at a two-person table because I had outside food--even though we had bought a drink from the café, no one was waiting for a table, and there was also an empty table. The policy itself is one thing, but the way it was enforced was unnecessary and unfriendly. The staff came across as rude, and the entire experience left a bad impression. coffee is great but like others have mentioned the baristas can be bit entitled and rude. not everyone but specifically the blonde one who's a bit younger was especially curt. i had gotten a bag of beans and the guy at the register was pleasant and nice and said that i can get a cup of brewed coffee for free for the bag of beans. since i didn't need more coffee as i was already having a capp - i asked if i could get it next time and the girl behind him answered for me and was like - no it's just for now - she was visibly annoyed and just rude. i saw her being rude to another patron while i was there. a woman simply asked for water with matcha. just give it to her. don't give her bs that it won't work because of the concentrations. maybe just explain it will not taste like plain matcha with water? elaborate instead of being curt and annoyed. if you are working in service, this is your job and you are being paid. people being served does not have to be served your attitude as well. we aren't paying for that. appreciate the gentleman up front who was nice. still rating them high bc i don't want to crap on a business but plz just be kind they play decent music and their cappuccinos are yum and they get their pastries from petit chou which is pretty yummy. double chocolate was a bit much but it was still good! read more

Lovely staff and A+++ coffee and pastries. Welcoming, It's pretty much a daily visit for me, with good reason. My only reservation is that there is no customer restroom, as I wish I could hang out here a bit longer ( I'd buy another cuppa fir sure). Besides that, believe the other reviews. A great place. Manager Malcolm went out of his way with an extra gesture make things right when there was a small misunderstanding with a pack of coffee I bought. That added effort really made me feel cared for. The store is cold. Like literally they seem to keep it air conditioned in late November. The Barista laughs too loudly. And bangs her utensils too loudly. And calls out names too loudly. I visited this place during a break from my studies. This small café is very busy, but that doesn't make it any worse. You can tell people choose this spot for their lunch break. They have vegan pastries and several different croissants and puff pastries-they look delicious. You can also get decent-quality grain coffee here. Okay, this is one of my fav coffee places on uws. The ambience is cool! I usually communicate with 2 girls who work there (one with curly hair and another wear glasses) but other baristas are also great and welcoming. They know their regular customers, always smiling and trying to have a small talk with everyone. But what is even better-coffee!!! I usually stop by to grab an oat vanilla latte and to be honest it's one of the best lattes that I've ever tried in nyc. A big pricy (it's 7$+ tip) but totally worth it. Baked goods are fine, nothing crazy but be prepared that if you'll stop by around 11:30 am there will be nothing left, lol. Also keep in mind that it's a really small place, literally 3 tables and a bench so I wouldn't stay there for a long time or schedule a meeting there. Plowshares has had a rough time during the pandemic. They appear to be bouncing back. This location is very cool and the employees I met are super friendly and efficient. The day I was there the place was empty. I particularly love the baked goods. They get them from at least three local merchants. I've only heard of one of their bakers and that's Balthazar. Next visit I'm taking a selection of the pastries home. Plowshares is a great place to go for morning coffee and a pastry. If you happen to be in the neighborhood I recommend you stop in. This place is pretty average overall, but the staff makes it a complete negative. They are rude, slow and treat people poorly. They serve average coffee and pastries, someone needs to tell them to chill out. This morning I walked in and was immediately and harshly told that my (small 10lb) dog was a HEALTHCODE VIOLATION and that I NEEDED TO LEAVE! I understand that not all cafes allow dogs in and that's totally fine but there's really no need to be so rude and aggressive about it. I asked if i can just order my coffee and wait outside. I was told NO! I needed to GET OUT immediately. This is the upper west side and its neighborhoody up here. It's not uncommon for people to be walking their dogs and getting a coffee on the way. This interaction makes me hope this place (or at least the people currently working there) get replaced with folks who actually WANT customers, instead of aggressively telling people to leave. I come here every week or so to grab beans which are roasted locally in Harlem every week. I'm kind of a coffee snob, and I think they have a great selection of medium to light roasts. I normally get their Costa Rica which are a medium roast. You also get a cup of whatever their house coffee is so I've tried their other roasts too and they're all good. I just had the best coffee yesterday I've had in months here at Plowshares. AND I drink an obscene amount of coffee. Whether it's the brand name ones such as stumptown or blue bottle, or the more boutique ones such as Devocion and Oslo... this cappuccino I had today really topped the charts. Only been twice so far, but they have only been around for about six months or so. Their cortado is a solid choice and they usually ask if you'd prefer Costa Rican or Colombian beans. Unfortunately, when I walked in as the second or so customer they forgot to ask, so I received Colombian when I prefer Costa Rica over anything else anyday. Owners/staff are friendly folks who truly seem to care about their business and patrons. Perhaps when they offer the option of heating up baked goods, they finalize their staffing (on my last visir they had help wanted sign) and I get around to buying a bag of beans to grind this place will bump up to 5 stars. Im staying at Marrakesh and wanted coffee that wasn't the Starbucks next door. This place is only two blocks further and much more worth it. I got a small cold brew with the cute teddy bear pastry. The teddy was almond and sweet enough to not necessitate sugar in the coffee, in addition to the coffee being excellent on its own. In this area, it is great to find a local independent "real deal" barista spot. After two visits, I have been very satisfied so far. Make sure to get a punch card. As you enter, this place can easily get very busy very quickly with a very narrow cafe. It's a pretty utilitarian interior design. It is welcoming and has a few tables. It is very clean and well maintained. Service was friendly. These coffees are not cheap but it is definitely about quality. The Chai latte was very nicely prepared. I am looking forward to trying a Nitro Brew on my next visit. Finally, the cafe uses the Bloomingdale name for the neighborhood. There are so many micro neighborhoods in NYC.
