Barber executes haircuts flawlessly. Better than going to a fancy expensive stylist. This statement has to be pre-qualified, by saying I'm NOT looking for a fancy cut, just a normal Ross Perot or Don Draper 70's cut. He charges $21 for the haircut, after tip, he's at about $25... If you've only gone to the $14 barber, he'll seem expensive, but if you're stepping down from a $40 stylist, then he serves that "Middle Market" Think of it this way, 12 haircuts a year for $300..... That's a bargain for what he does. I spend more on booze every two months... Things to Like: he knows his stuff. Nice shop setup in weird industrial area. Online appointments, secure time slots, no dicking around. No hard sell push to buy shampoo and stuff. He's not selling his style or sex appeal, he's selling his experience, which is considerable. What I don't like: He's not a great conversationalist, he's a little dry for me. Also during your haircut he is the receptionist, phone call taker and laptop appointment maker, all as he cuts your hair...WTF Another issue that has become irritating is that my 30 minute appointment takes 1 hour. He either has someone on the chair that has gone over, or for some other reason, the timing is off. This has been noted on at least 4-5 previous visits. Location is a little out of the way. No such thing as dropping in, you have to make an appointment. Solo business (most of the time), 1 man operation. The 30 minute time slot means, it's back to back, no room for error or creativity or casual "let's try something different today" Also if the previous guy shows up late, everyone proceeding him will now be delayed, negating the online appointment setup. The guys I see coming in are nerd types or engineers that want something better than your $9.99 haircut by local freshie cosmetology graduate but are not willing to take it to the sexy voluptuous stylist $40 level. By no means is he perfect. I have uploaded a recent haircut which shows a lack of perfectionism you would expect for your $25 purchase. Should the hair surrounding my ears be so haphazard? This is laziness, I can get this quality for $12.99. Having said that I return here because he tends to be better calibrated and on-point more often than not. Is this a 5 star experience? Room for some improvement with the quality of the haircuts IMO. Maybe he needs to wear glasses, who knows? read more

Perfect name for my situation. I enter this establishment and immediately I'm floored at how classy this place is. Leather seats, flat screen televisions, coffee and water while you wait, toys for the kids. I made an appointment through the phone (he also has an online appointment system) and he took me as soon as he finished with his current customer. I can't say enough about Daniel. He has a very nice manner about him, very professional, and very good at his craft. I told him what I wanted done and he gave me some advice. He tried a few different things, always asking me questions throughout the process. It really felt like an adult haircut. That may sound weird, but when I was younger I used to go with my dad to the barbershop and he'd get his hair cut by these old guys. Talking about this and that...I never had that. It was always, sit down, get my hair faded, get out in 10 minutes. This guy takes his time and does it right. Highly recommended. read more

I suggest during your lunch break to do walk ins but he does take appts. It make his service go more efficient rather than walking in. The only bad part about this place, it's just Daniel working here...so that's why I suggest doing an appt. Other than that he'll clean you up, but so far all his clients are guys in the area. I used to go to another men's salon before I started going to About Time. And it was about time!!! The other salon was ok and slightly cheaper, but the value was definitely not as good. At the other place the results were very inconsistent and depending on which stylist you got, your hair looked different every time. Plus: I always had to ask for little corrections at the end of the cut to make everything 100% right. Not so with Daniel. He is a perfectionist and very thorough from A to Z. A very nice gentleman with some good stories in his portfolio. I also went to Alicia once who is a stylist, contrary to Daniel. Alicia did a great job as well, better than the stylists at the previous place I went to. But I was looking for a barber, so I stayed with Daniel. I am a regular now and will continue to go here. In terms of the appointment system vs. walk-ins: I really don't know where the big problem is. It seems to be a 50/50 preference when it comes to what's better and what not. If you choose the one way you make the first 50% unhappy and if you choose the other way it's the other 50%. But I find it completely unnecessary to make a business look bad by giving one star just because you don't like the way the business works without trying the service. It's like going to a burger joint and thinking that the wait in line is too long and because you're hungry you decide to leave and then give the place a one star review and saying "it suxx", although you've never tried their burger. And when I got there she said only bangs and no trim Because she had another client in 30min. Btw. I've been getting my haircut with her too since 2008? almost every yr or so. Last appointment I had with her with my bf was avery disappointing, we had to cancel it last minute and re schedule it for next time and when we got our haircut my boyfriend had a huge abrasion in the back of his neck, hair wasn't cut well, and we had to pay the canceled appointment. She charged us double for one appointment! What a big mistake coming back to this place! She was a good hairstylist back when she was working in downtown San Jose. Good reviews aside, this barber cut my neck with his razor while shaving my neck. It left a scab/scar. I went in for a haircut, and I didn't need a shaved neck. Clippers would have been fine for that. But he used a razor, and didn't even tell me that he cut me. I found out from my wife. I will NOT be returning to this barber. You just walk in, get your cut, chat for awhile and go on your merry way. But that was so 3 years ago. Now the secrets out and waits can easily hit 1-2 hours. Daniel has told me that he really has no choice but to go appointment only in 2011. He's just that popular now! Make no mistake, Daniel is a barber and not a beautician! If I could grow a beard, I would grow one just to see how his straight blade shaves are like! There are definitely a lot of things to appreciate about his setup too inside the shop. I've been using Daniel to cut my hair for the better part of a year and have to say he's the most consistent and careful barber I've ever had and I'll never stray again. He takes his time, and calculates every cut. This goes a long way with me- he takes pride in his work and goes out of his way to make sure I'm happy. There is usually a line, but there is a webcam pointed at the waiting area to gauge how long it will take. Daniel is also very friendly over the phone and will help fit you in when he can. I've always been a SuperCuts person, but I finally had enough of how I could never get in and out of there in less than an hour, even when I called ahead (some family of 5 would always somehow show up before I actually got there) Not so with Daniel, who takes appointments. I know most people reading this review are used to this, but to me, accustomed to years of SuperCuts and neighborhood barber shops, this concept of calling someone up to actually schedule a haircut and being able to show up at that time and be served immediately is like discovering plutonium. Four stars because I got a good hair cut and the experience was nice (clean place, lady was nice, etc). HOWEVER.... this is definitely not a barber shop, it's a salon. Even if it says so in the name, or it has the barber shop pole outside. The pictures in Yelp should have told me that but I went anyway. Barber shops don't have so much products in it. Barber shop don't offer you coffee when you come in. Barber don't use funky electric trimmer things for your neck. I love the straight razor and was sorely disappointed when it wasn't used. As I said, I got a good hair cut and would go again if I really need to and can't go to my regular (real) barber shop. read more

Daniel is like the Gestapo - he will keep asking you questions about how you want your hair and will not start cutting until he gets all his answers. He cared more about my hair than i did about it that is for sure. The downside to all this is that sometimes you have to wait in line to get your hair cut, but he has a webcam that shows the sitting room so you can see if there is a line before you come. Myself personally i would maybe rather go to a place that is faster, even if they pay less attention to me, but since i got good results with Daniel every time i could not justify to myself going anywhere else. I never wrote a review for this place because i was afraid the waiting lines would get longer, but i am writing it now because i moved to New York so i can finally give Daniel the credit he deserves. One more thing - every customer i have ever seen in Daniel's shop was a man - no women and no children, also the only Barber here is Daniel himself so you don't have to worry about inconsistent results from being cut by different people. I'm no stranger to expensive salons: W's, 5 Color Cowboy, Shampoo Dolls...etc. So, you can say my expectations are high... and they were not let down. Daniel knows what he's doing. It's that simple. You go in, tell him what you want (even better- bring a picture of what style you're going for) and he does it. With precision. He has a great mix of barber'ish skills and salon-grade technique. At one point his hands/scissors were moving so quick it reminded me of Edward Scissor Hands when he was cutting that chicks hair in the backyard and she magically was transformed into a new woman. For 25ish bucks (depending on how generous you are); you cant beat About Time Barber. I will DEF be returning! read more
