Long, positive review of Felix and his crew. If you don't have the time to read, just hire them. Its a no brainer. One of the better companies I've worked with on my 30 years here in the Richmond Annex. I needed a reroof on my Richmond Annex house. I found three roofing references from contractors I had worked with in the past. I also had two additional companies I found on Yelp come out (Above and Beyond was one of them), for a total of 5 estimates. One estimate was from an unlicensed roofer, so no warranty but probably the cheapest. The rest were all established brick and mortar companies, including Above and Beyond Roofing (Felix Howard). Above and Beyond came out, walked the roof, explained in detail the processes and made sure I understood the issues that might arise with my house. He also was the only one that provided extensive documentation on the house using the GAF QuickMeasure system, a thorough written estimate with options and extensive documentation on the products and process. The other companies were fine, just not as comprehensive, and the last guy was kind of a shot in the dark. One of my contractors said it best, "you might get lucky or you might end up with more leaks than you started." Above and Beyond were also the most price competitive, nearly matching the unlicensed contractor's bid and Felix includes GAF's Silver Pledge warranty, has workman's comp on all his crew and a easy to navigate documentation process which includes permitting, contracts, invoicing and payments. Felix was even able to reduce the estimate when plywood prices went down. They are a local company with a physical presence and I love supporting these types of operations. So we went ahead and signed the contract. They were great and easy to work with. My wife had a particular color request for the shingles and venting, Felix accomodated it. The crew was blazing fast, 2 hours to remove the roof and they quickly repaired sections that exposed dryrot or had poor quality support. By the second day they had started shingling. Rain was forecasted on the night of the third day and they were able to put more time and effort to finish up before it came. Inspector came yesterday and finalized the permit. Each day they cleaned up the massive amount of debris generated by the work, they were responsive to and considerate of my neighbors, and they were extremely professional in managing resources, trucks, dumpsters, etc. Roofing is a rough, loud, invasive job and they managed it and our interactions extremely well. We had an emergency roof leak and sent out requests through Yelp for pricing and availability. Above and Beyond Roofing was the first of three to respond, and they responded quickly, which really mattered in a stressful situation. Felix called right away and arrived on time as promised. The team came out specifically for the emergency leak and did a very thorough inspection of the roof. They even sent four detailed videos showing the condition of the roof and explaining exactly what was going on, which we really appreciated. Since it was still raining, they tarped the damaged section to prevent further issues until repairs can be completed. As a bonus, they also cleared the gutters, which helped with drainage. Felix and the above and beyond crew did an absolutely amazing job on my roof. First off, Felix was the only contractor out of many who came on first call to speak with me, check out the roof, show me samples, etc. other contractors while I think they were all good took a bit more effort. Felix is the owner of the company and he personally checks on everything and I felt he gave his honest opinion. The roof was done incredibly professionally. The lines were straight, installed all new vents, colored them to match the roof, did an amazing job to flash the chimney, created a ridge vent, and personally came and checked every day. The team that worked was also very hard working, often working past 6pm. I had a solar install after the roof was done and Felix asked me to call him when the solar install is done to make sure the roof was ok. I sent him an email, and Felix promptly told me he will swing by in a few days which he did. If you want a roof well done and not be concerned about whether the roof will come out ok, then Felix and his team is it. Icing on the cake is that his prices are reasonable. Felix takes couple of days to do the install. I prefer this compared to crews that do it in a day because fewer hands mean everything will be done in a similar consistent manner. Above and Beyond did an amazing job on my new skylights. They were very kind, prompt, and professional from the beginning. I had a leak coming from my skylights initially I thought the flashings just needed to be repaired. Every roofing company I called wouldn't even come out for a quote because they felt like the job was too small not this company. Felix was very fast with responding to my initial communication when I was called for an appointment I was told the job wasn't to small. When Felix came out he gave me a reasonable estimate he also patched a hole for me on my roof while I decided if I wanted to move forward or not due to the pending rain. I was given 3 options all very reasonable and fair. Once I decided on the full replacement the process was seamless and quick. The guys came out a week and a half later they were very quick but it didn't feel rushed and they were very respectful of my home and property. I was shown how to operate my new skylights as well before they left. I know this review is long but its important for people to know a real experience before choosing a company. Felix answered all of my questions along the way and provided me with photos as well. Although I felt scheduling could have been better as far as notice I understand as they are very busy and people are trying to beat the rain so I am happy they were able to squeeze me in. Above and Beyond Roofing did an excellent job replacing my 25+ yr old roof. Felix, the owner came out on a Sunday to give me an estimate. His estimate was fair and competitive but what sold me on selecting this company was his attention to detail and explanation of what needed to be done. The estimate included 3 tiers of pricing depending on how long of a warranty on their work and the materials I wanted to use. When the crew showed up to tear down the old roof all the guys were super friendly and I could tell they took pride in the job they were doing. They were hard working and efficient. At the end of the day they would show me pictures they took of my roof. In addition being a long term El Cerrito resident I liked that this company is headquartered in El Cerrito.
