My wife purchased two tickets for a hot air balloon flight from this company. The intention behind the purchase was meaningful--it was my elderly mother-in-law's dream, and this was a rare opportunity to fulfill it. Unfortunately, due to injury, weather, and logistical constraints, we were never able to take the flight. While I can understand that small businesses have their policies, I believe our experience highlights serious concerns that other potential customers should know before booking, particularly those who do not live near the launch site or who have caregiving or work responsibilities. We were not asking for anything unreasonable. The flights we attempted to book were never full--we confirmed this each time--so our rescheduling or cancellation would not have prevented anyone else from flying. Despite this, after four cancellations on their part due to weather and two proactive reschedulings on our part (in anticipation of poor conditions), the company refused to offer even a partial refund. This policy remained unchanged even though our cancellations were rooted in legitimate weather concerns and the need to avoid long overnight travel for my wife and elderly mother-in-law. Their refusal to acknowledge this reality, coupled with dismissive remarks such as "we don't know what weather app you're using," was frankly insulting. It's the standard weather app available on every smartphone. What compounds the problem is the rigidity of their scheduling policy. They will not confirm whether a flight is going ahead until 8:00 PM the night before a 5:15 AM departure. For anyone coming from New York City (a multi-hour journey), this is deeply impractical. We once had to cancel a trip 30 minutes before departure from our home simply because they wouldn't confirm earlier, despite clear weather warnings. This lack of flexibility and poor customer support creates a high-stakes gamble for anyone not located nearby. Add the cost of travel, overnight accommodations, and the risk of last-minute cancellations, and the actual cost of this experience balloons to $1000 or more for two people. Despite repeated attempts to make use of our tickets before expiration, we were thwarted by several company-initiated cancellations due to weather. They did offer us a one-week extension, which we appreciated. However, when we politely asked for a refund after a month of unsuccessful rescheduling, they abruptly declared our tickets expired. Only when we pushed back did they reverse that statement--something that felt more like strategic positioning than good-faith customer service. The shift in tone when they learned we intended to post a review was striking and disingenuous. It felt like damage control, not sincere effort to rectify the situation. To be clear, I don't doubt that the balloon ride itself may be beautiful. But potential customers need to know that this company is extremely inflexible, often unprofessional in tone, and not equipped to accommodate anyone traveling from outside their local area. The risks--financial and logistical--are significant. This isn't just about a missed flight; it's about a poorly designed customer experience that leaves no room for the real-life variables most people have to consider. WARNING: DO NOT BOOK if you live in NYC OR are visiting the area OR have work in the morning and or children/other responsibilities to take care of. I bought two tickets last year for $750 because it was my elderly mother's lifelong dream. It was a huge expense for me but my mom was here on a rare visit to the country. Shortly after I bought the tickets, she injured herself and wasn't able to fly. The owners would not even consider a refund EVEN THOUGH WE BOUGHT THE TICKETS JUST OVER A WEEK PRIOR, stating "you don't get refunds on concert and basketball game tickets."...well, with concert/game tickets, there are dozens of websites where you can resell if you need to. WARNING: YOU WILL NOT GET A REFUND AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESELL THESE TICKETS IF YOU NEED TO. Every resale website requires an event date and a recognizable business/location to sell tickets--this experience doesn't qualify. No one in our networks or on sites like Craigslist would buy the tickets despite weeks of trying because of the expense. We tried to reschedule when my mom's injury was marginally better but either we had or they had to cancel 2-3 times in the days before because of weather conditions. I totally understand weather is out their control so I'm only noting this so potential customers understand that if you are traveling from somewhere not near the tiny town in Central New York they fly from, you WILL LOSE MONEY IF THEY CANCEL LAST MINUTE. WE ONCE HAD TO CANCEL 30 MINUTES BEFORE WE WERE SETTING OUT TO TRAVEL TO THE FLIGHT because despite prediction of bad weather, they would not confirm cancellation until later in the night. THEY ONLY PROMISE TO CONFIRM WHETHER THEY FLY BY 8PM THE NIGHT BEFORE THE 5:15AM FLIGHT! This means that if you don't have a car, you'll spend minimum $200 on travel (THREE HOURS FROM NYC ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT/2 HOURS BY CAR W/ TRAFFIC), minimum $300 on an overnight hotel stay near the flight. WARNING: THE ACTUAL COST OF THE EXPERIENCE IS EASILY $1000+ for two people. An overnight hotel we booked made an exception when I explained my mother injured herself, and gave us a refund as any humane business should. Fast forward one year, once the weather became nice again, my husband and I tried to fly before the tickets expired so as not to lose out on the money. To their credit: they give you a year to reschedule although I'm sure most people want to fly when the landscape is pretty. Due to weather, three flights were canceled and then they told us our ticket had expired even though we tried to schedule this trip for a month straight. WARNING: THEY CANCELED THREE WEEKENDS IN A ROW THIS YEAR. -If you had booked your tickets this month and booked an overnight hotel each time, you would have lost $1000 minimum. -If you have small children at home, you would have paid for an overnight babysitter three times. -If you work and had scheduled for a weekday, you would have missed three days of work. As the last straw, they gave us a one-week extension on our tickets earlier in the month but after I very politely asked for them to reconsider a refund after all the cancelations, they said our tickets had already expired. I'm sure this was because I asked for a refund. Once I called them out on this, they curtly offered the later date again but at this point we don't feel comfortable flying with them due to their "uncaring and unsympathetic" demeanor as other customers have said. Throughout the booking experience, they were deeply condescending, passive aggressive, and sometimes venomous when given the slightness pushback. Note: after I said I'm posting this review, their tone did such a 180 to so pleasant and accommodating to try to get us rebooked, it was actually unnerving--they tried to gaslight me into thinking all the scheduling issues were my fault (even though they canceled four times), and I've no doubt that they switched up so they could say they made "every effort was made to accommodate us." I can't speak to the quality of the experience--my warning is about the experience of booking with this inflexible company should weather go bad (which it does frequently) and the logistical nightmare and loss of money if something goes wrong or you're not near their small town--$1000+ is a lot of money to gamble on good luck. read more

I would definitely recommend that you choose the traditional champagne balloon flight over the shorter flight. I was actually upgraded to the longer flight (thanks again Deana) from the shorter flight, and boy was I glad. I feel 20-30 minutes in the air wouldn't have been enough. Not only is the traditional flight twice the duration, but you also get a keepsake photo and champagne to drink after the flight. Deana also told us some interesting anecdotes, such as the origin of hot air balloon flight and why drinking champagne after the flight has become customary, which I thought was cool. Really glad I chose to go with this group for my first hot air balloon flight. As of the time of this review, there doesn't appear to be an online option to book your flight, so just give them a call to make a reservation or ask any questions you may have (Deana is very helpful and thorough). I booked a flight for my daughter, her husband and my 7-year-old grandson to honor the 2nd anniversary of my husband's death from cancer. I spent $1500.00 for the experience with my daughter and her family. At the time she had a toddler at home and we live approximately 3 hours away, so we needed to make arrangements. We had everything planned perfectly, but the day of the ride it was cancelled due to weather. We rescheduled for the next day, and again we were told at 4:00 am that we won't be flying. This was the end of September of 2023, Deana advised that we had a year to reschedule, but from the time I originally booked, which was in mid-June. After our original scheduled date, due to medical circumstances I was hospitalized no less than 5 times. Deana did text me a few times the night before to let me know they had availability. We were not able to utilize the dates she suggested. I called and texted the end of April to try and rebook, I advised Deana that my daughter was pregnant and would she even be able to ride, for which she advised no. My daughter was due to have the baby the end of July, 2024. Deana did not care, and gave me a hard time, but, in the end, after speaking to the owner, did agree to extend until September 1, 2024. But if we didn't fly by that date, we would forfeit our tickets and the $1500.00. We chose the last possible day because my daughter had a C-Section and was advised by her doctors that she would not be able to fly for at least 4 weeks, and we needed to made arrangements for a newborn and a 3-year-old, so September 1, was our best option. Flight was cancelled on August 31, 2024 due to weather at 5:53 pm. We were told we could come Tuesday or Wednesday, but Tuesday is the 1st day of school, so was not an option. I suprised my girlfriend with a hot air balloon trip this past weekend and it was an incredible experience. Even though the weather wasn't the greatest, the team really went above and beyond to make it special. I had called around a couple of other hot air ballon places, and was really sold by my conversation with Deana. She wasn't pushy, she was very energetic and fun and made me excited to book it. She didn't even ask me to book it right then, told me to call her back when I was sure. The other places I called were very pushy, telling me I had to book it now or I would lose my spot. We had the sunrise tour for a half hour trip, and I booked the Romance package so that it was just us (and the pilot, Vicky) in the basket. I would say the trip lasted closer to 40 minutes which was nice. Everything went very smooth, Vicky gave us some fun facts and explained what she was doing while we were up there enjoying the view. About twenty minutes in I handed Vicky my phone so she could take a picture of the two of us, and then I got down on one knee and proposed. Vicky took great photos that we will have forever and it was a very special moment. Deana and the rest of the team knew ahead of time so they were "on a mission" to make it perfect. When we landed, we had mimosas while they deflated the baloon. Vicky made a nice little toast and gave us a souvenir "hot air balloon" made out of the cork and the champagne wire. Safe to say, we had a nice little buzz on the ride back to the airfield. I would definitely suggest splurging and getting the couple special package even if it isnt a special occasion. For just a little more money you have the entire basket to yourself and I think it was much more enjoyable. My Husband surprised me with an amazing experience. From the moment we arrived at Above the Clouds, Deanna made us feel so welcomed. My husband said the booking and correspondence between owners and himself was superb. Very helpful, accomadating and knowledgeable. The drive from NYC is about an hour and a half but smooth ride. We followed GPS and it took us right to the door step. Upon arrival for a 6am more ascend we had the most amazing apple bread (To die for) with coffee and or tea. There is a restroom which is very clean. The hospitality of the crew and owners is amazing. The grass as stated on the memo, is wet so do wear shoes that you are fine getting wet. This morning it was 61 degrees and I was not cold, I used a scarf no sweater but to be honest the flame from heating the Envelope or Ballon was warmth enough. It is 8 people to a gondola aka basket. A little tight but not suffocating. I enjoyed the scenery and having a few go up at the same time was picturesque. They also take a pre departure picture which you get framed at the end which is a nice keepsake. Upon a flawless touchdown on the ground by Tim we celebrated with a mimosa, always a great way to start the morning! The only complaint I would say, and I hate to do this, is that for the journey to get here and amount you pay for the ride, it should've been the amount of time stated on purchase(1 hour flight), our ride was 34 mins but it was a wonderful 34mins, and I would have to give a little slack due to weather conditions I understand it's a give or take with wind, as safety is their number one concern. My family was in town for my 30th birthday and my husband surprised me with a hot air balloon ride for all of us! Chris and Deana were such fun people. The whole process was easy professional and fun. The directions to the airport were detailed and made it easy to get there. They had even suggested a place for a pit stop as we were coming from a bit of a distance. The crew was quick and efficient- I was amazed at how fast the balloon went from rolled up on the ground to inflated and ready for us to get in (after our safety briefing of course). Once in the air we drifted over the highway where motorists were honking their horns and waving (even at 5am!)! We went over a bank of trees just above the branches- a unique perspective I had never thought about before! The whole ride was so much more about nature than I had anticipated. Once you get used to being in the balloon (high up, open air floating is not something I do every day) you start to see all sorts of animals in their natural setting, but almost like a fly on the wall. There were deer grazing in a field nearby that would look up at you, then go back to their food, bunnies hopping across lawns, a blue heron, a few hawks. My favorite were two baby deer leaping through a high brush marshland. The whole trip was peaceful and amazing. The landing was easy, and Chris and Deana popped a bottle of champagne and told us about the history of the champagne/ hot air balloon tradition as the crew deflated and packed up the balloon. Then we were in the van on our way back to the airport. When we got there Deana had printed the photos she took before our ride and had them in keepsake paper frames for us! What a great experience altogether. We had to reschedule our weekend due to a family emergency, but luckily there was an opening a few weeks later that Chris could accomodate us, and we are very happy he did. We drove from Long Island for the AM flight, (if you can stay over the night before for a little extra sleep, I'll probably do that next time). It was such a beautiful morning that I knew it was going to be a special experience. Chris walked us through the balloon inflation process and how to get in/get out, etc.. It's a lot more in depth than it seems, so that was awesome. Then once we got up and into the air, it was the most beautiful/peaceful experience I've ever had. You could see for miles!
