Taco enchilada lunch. Very tasty. Chips outstanding. Bar area full. Service is better there. Two of us sat at far north booths. First time I've ever ran out of water or salsa. We've eaten in Abuelos dozens of times. I'll go back before 11:30 or not at all. No handicap parking left. Parked far west edge of lot. J* served us and worked hard but too far from kitchen for great service. I left an 18% tip but normally 20-25%. read more

We have been going to the east side Abuelo's for 15+ years. Bummed it is closed but now will have to come to this location. First impression was not the best cleanliness wise. The booths are quite dirty. Upon being seated we were greeted with a rude hostess who took us to a booth absolutely covered in chips, salsa and who knows what else. As she sweeping the chips into the ground into a pile, we asked about the booth next to it, that was empty and clean. And she ignored our request and said "I got it". So we proceeded to stomp on the chips that she had wiped off. That being said the food came out hot and was up to standards but the booths need to be cleaned better. It was not busy, I'm not sure why she had such an issue with us wanting a cleaner booth and floor not covered in chips. Everyone else was very nice. Short a sweet review here. Just flew down from New York..This place is right down the street from the airport. What a beautiful restaurant!! Spacious, lovely decor, and the food was very yummy. Our server Maddie was super sweet and attentive...she told us about some great Happy Hour promotions..so they may very well see us again before we return to NY. I think I may have reviewed Carlos O'kellys ( which is across the street ) on my last trip down..they are good Mexican too..but for a little "higher end", This is the place. The branch on the east side closed so Chris and I thought we'd drive to the west side to satisfy our craving. The place seemed bigger and has more seating area. It is bright and festive. We sat at the bar and placed our orders. We had the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp for appetizer. We've ordered this all the time and let me tell you this. It was way better than the ones we've had at their east location! The bacon, wrapped tightly around the huge shrimp was cooked perfectly! Chris said, "Wow!" Abuelo's is too expensive to be just ok. The rice was mushy and had been cooked too long - it was also $3.50 extra to add about 1/2 cup as a side. The empanadas were ok. I ordered chicken and got beef, but didn't send them back because it took about 30 min to get our order. The beef empanadas had a sweet taste that I didn't like. The fajita chicken was pretty good and everything on the table looked nice. They start with chips and a salsa trio. The chips are good, but one of the salsa choices tasted like band-aids, which might have been made from a pepper than none of us liked. The tomatillo salsa was good. The queso is decent, but pricey at about $11 for a bowl. The atmosphere is nice and the staff was friendly. If I had to choose between Abuelo's and somewhere else in the future, I'd take my chances somewhere else. This place just didn't taste as great as it should have for the price. read more

Abuelo's West. Haven't eaten there in a long time, but have visited twice now this month. Everything was great! The beef is seasoned just right, the cheesy dip is yummy , chips light and crispy, all ingredients fresh to order. Not extremely noisy which we prefer. Our waitress both times (Jasmine), what a delightful young gal. We don't eat as much as we use to, so she recommended Ala carte which was the perfect option for us, more affordable too. If you're craving tacos, "me", not on the regular menu but available...just ask! A great experience, we'll be back. read more

Some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Didn't expect much being in Kansas and it definitely was bad.

The waitress was lovely and the restaurant is BEAUTIFUL. its so light and bright... trees inside the building with high ceilings. Great drinks, very tasty food and vegetarian/vegan options. Visited this restaurant before, I was not impressed but my husband was. So I gave in and we visited again. This I enjoyed the food better. I still don't care for their tortilla chips, they are too thin and break easily. How is one to dip it in the salsa without losing half of the chip. The Mexican rice and the beans were great. My enchiladas were just okay. Not sure I'll want to return, but my husband just might. There are many Mexican restaurants in Wichita to settle for just okay food. read more

We placed an order last night for pickup. It was terrible. The papas were so dried out. The portions were small but that was ok, less to throw away. Each meal was around $20 with a total of $75. All three meals were terrible. We will not be eating there again. For $20 I'll have something good! read more

On our way to the airport and decided to stop in for lunch. Yum! Great service! Tasty salsas, queso and guacamole. Service was great and 3 of us had an awesome meal. I went to this place last night me and my family. The waiter was really nice but the manager came to my table and said that she's gonna sit there and listen to my order to make sure that my food was correct because her staff said that I was asked to not come back to this place ever again, and it was no such thing. I never had a problem in there. No one never told me never to come back. They clearly got me confused with someone else very uncomfortable I end up getting up and walking out, I would not recommend this place if you are a minority they are very prejudiced. Everybody's stood around looking at me like I done something wrong. I will never return. read more

Now I have another reason to not like this place. They sent me a reward of $15.00 after I spent over 350.00 on a meal for family. This was the 2nd time I did this. The Service to start is incredible. The atmosphere is a quiet yet lively place where you can here you family and see you childrens beautiful faces. Madelyn is incredible. Greatest waiter on the face of the planet. While wrighting this I am watching the Copa America on the TVs that show some great sports including soccer, hockey, and a family favorite baseball. I just wasn't that impressed. A couple of things detracted from the experience. Queso is not very good. Probably the worst I have ever had. It isn't very flavorful and just kind of there, if that makes sense. The salsa is not very spicy. The waitress took our order but disappeared until someone else brought the food. Gotta keep the liquids flowing. She also messed up my wife's order as they forgot to hold the green peppers so her dinner was delayed. The fajitas were a C+ . I've worked and traveled in over a dozen stats in the U.S. I've dined at Mexican restaurants all over the place. By far, my favorite drink on the planet is a margarita. The "El Jefe" at Abuelo's is THE BEST Margarita I've have ever had in my life, and I'm no spring chicken. If you go for nothing else, try the el jefe. Walked into the restaurant by myself around 5:45pm on a Monday evening. The restaurant was not that crowded. I was sitting there for 5-6 minutes without anyone coming to the table with chips and salsa and asking me what I would like to drink. 4 people walk in and shortly after the waiter was bringing chips, salsa and water. I was in town to do some training and this place was next to the hotel. I Abuelos chips, cheese and chile rellanos. I skip the rice and get their cheesy potatoes. Add a margarita and it's the perfect dinner. Service was good, efficient and friendly. read more

Well Saturday night place was busy, waited 40 even with call a head seating Five people Waiter was not great, big holes in his ears was a distraction and funny to look at. Anyway... ordered food came out within 20min, but the food was so HOT to touch not spicy, that we spent 20 min to wait til it cooled down. The plates extremely ridiculously hot. Told hoop ear guy and he said sorry, asked for Mgr and he or she never showed. Place has great atmosphere but the staff is not that great, when the food was able to eat it was not very good, was real disappointment. Complete waste of time and will not be going back. read more
