God I forgot how delicious this place is! I recently went back to dine in after a longggggg time, and its even more amazing than I remembered. I love getting their cabbage and salad with the miso ranch. It's so tasty. This time, i decided to try a new chicken flavor: Yuzo Jerk Sauce. It was a great combination of sweet, savory, and spicy. I really enjoyed it, an would definitely get it again. The vide of this place is very cool and dive bar-esque. It just get super packed (which makes sense) and seating is very limited. The good thing is the service is always very fast, making the wait for the food or a table bearable.
Aburaya is a new favorite of mine! I'm obsessed with their ethics and values that you can see posted up on the wall. It's an edgy twist on Japanese Fried Chicken, with cool art work, affordable eats, and it seems like a community staple for sure. Many people opt in for takeout but I decided to dine in with my friend. It's casual style dining, no service it is self service at the counter. Additionally, they had options for snacks and drinks. We had some jelly sake, sapporo, and there were goodies to try from. They also had free stickers. My meal was plentiful and lasted me some leftovers afterwards. I'm coming back one day! The staff is nice and had great recommendations. I recommend trying it out if you're in the area, won't disappoint.
Today i tried the Japanese fried chicken tights, rice, salad and salsa verde wasabi sauce. I added more flavor using soy sauce, as Teresa kindly recommended, this pairing of wasabi, spy sauce, rice and fried chicken was delicious. Also i love the music, vibes of the staff and the eclectic decoration. Always I have an anazing meal and moment when i come here.
I only got to try their limited menu at their booth for the inaugural Oakland Freedom Run and it was phenomenal! Loved that they even had vegan options too. Staff was great and so quick with their food prep. It was a limited menu so I can't wait to try their brick and mortar locations in Oakland and Berkeley soon!
This review strictly for delivery through doordash only. We got this fairly quick within 30-45 minutes from ordering which wasn't bad at all. It was hot upon arrival. I just air fried it a bit more for a little crunch. This was my first time having it and wow this was so delicious for some chicken. I ordered the 4pc added salad & cabbage & it was a really huge portion I was pretty full. It could only choose 1 flavor unfortunately. My boyfriend ordered the xxtra spicy karalina miso & yuzu jerk and the jerk sauce was pretty yummy. I definitely want to come back to try this in person and try other flavors out.
Cozy little space with a side eating space but limited seating. A few two top tables outside too as well as a few tables in the main room. Order at the front and then find a seat! All the utensils are in the front room and with a dirty dish bin in the bottom~ They really know their chicken- it was moist and had so much flavor. I really enjoyed the fried chicken sando sauce, it was so tasty! - also tried the yuzu jerk sauce- tasty but also reminded me a little tiny bit of curry sauce heh Service is friendly~ I will be back to try the other flavors!
This place is awesome!! A little hole in the wall bursting with character inside. I mean you've got funky swag and lots of legit Japanese products and a wide selection of sake and other drinks. of course I'm sure their main speciality is the fried chicken so you gotta try that. It was crisp, hot, and perfectly seasoned. They have so many sauce choices too! I wish I could try it all. Service is quick in spite of the single lane line up. They use a speaker/intercom to call you up, which makes it easy to hear when your order is ready for pick up. I'd love to visit again if I'm in the Oakland area. Since it's in the city, parking is mostly street though there may be some nearby paid lots within walking distance.
No wonder it's an Oakland staple, this place shmacks! It's a little easy to pass in downtown, but once you're inside, it's like nowhere else you've been. Japanese fried chicken is already hard to come by, and this place specializes in it! Before you even get to order that classic 4-piece plate, you're greeted with a bunch of fun snacks, international beers, and other bits and bobs. I've tried two flavors out of the 14 rubs and sauces they have. The Kogarashi honey is delish -- if you reaaalllyyyy enjoy wasabi heat. Garlic soy is classic and always a good and safe choice. I'm definitely going back again so I can try all the other flavors. The chicken itself is juicy and tender, I cant imagine any spice or glaze ruining it at its core. (I stomached the wasabi despite my mistakenly ordering it because I just wanted Aburaya that bad)
Our lunch at Aburaya was so filling and satisfying! Each of us ordered their 4 pieces chicken with rice and salad. We were so hungry but thought the 4 piece portion was a bit much. We couldn't finish our lunch and brought it home with us as the portion was quite large. For the chicken flavor, We got their habanero miso, Karashi honey and garlic miso. All flavors were very tasty and the chicken was so juicy in the inside. We also got their tater tots and cucumber salad. The tater tots came with some delicious toppings and sauce. The cucumber salad tasted so light and refreshing. They also serve some interesting alcoholic drinks (beer and sake) local and from Japan. There are plenty of seatings area inside as people come and go. Will return to try other items and flavors.
Looks like almost the entire audience of the Taylor Tomlinson comedy show at the Paramount and I had the same idea to come here for a pre-show dinner. I enjoy trying different restaurants in the area anytime I come up for a show at the Fox and Paramount but none have been this busy, which is a testament to their popularity! The online menu is pretty overwhelming in its options but at the register it was more clear: pick a protein (chicken or vegan), pick a dry rub OR sauce , pick a base (rice/salad/cabbage/combo). And then with options to order appetizers or dessert or non-fried protein entrees (but then why are you here?) Overwhelmed with the 10+ sauce or dry rub options I played it safe and went with Japanese BBQ sauce. It was a little too sweet for my tastes so I wish I had tried one of the more out there options. The chicken was flavorful and while not super moist, it wasn't dry. I got two pieces on top of the rice+salad+cabbage combo and this was like $11 and more than enough food for me. Wild! The salad came with a lovely sesame dressing but the cabbage was raw and roughly chopped, so a little hard to eat. The chicken also came with a ranch that I keep thinking about because it was unique. Not like traditional American ranch, a little closer to a Greek taziki because of some herb in there. Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating but it fills up fast beware, and you need to wait in line to order before grabbing a spot - limited street parking nearby - almost everything is gluten free (especially the batter) except for some of the desserts
walked in on a tuesday a little before lunch rush hour and ordered at counter! cutlery and napkins available on the side. don't be fooled, there's additional seating on the side of the restaurant. food: crunchy cucumber refreshing, saltier as you get to where the bulk of seasoning is placed. use the cucumber to reset ur tastebuds in between bites of different chicken. orange honey aioli: the chicken itself was moist seasoned plainly. chicken has yellow mild sweet sauce. the miso ranch served on the side is deceptive in the best way, looks heavy but tastes light with slight tang. garlic miso: dry rub was a bit disappointing. i expected it to be coated with the powder but it was more of a light dusting so it was a bit plainer compared to the other chicken. i def plan on going again to try their different sauces on their menu
Found this small Japanese restaurant while looking for some places to eat before seeing a show at the Fox Theatre. The sauces here are quite extensive and I definitely would like to come back and try other ones. I had the teriyaki sauce on my fried chicken and my partner did the BBQ and Umami salt which was certainly plentiful and a great meal with salad and rice included. It was well worth the price and I would certainly get it again. Overall I will definitely come back again to try more sauces and dry rubs!
There was no wait for a table when my friend and I came on a Tuesday evening around 6 pm. You order at the counter and then find yourself a table to sit at. I wish they made it more obvious that you're expected to bus your own table. I gave tip when I paid and then subsequently saw the sign about cleaning up after yourself when we sat down. We shared 8 pieces of fried chicken ($15), half garlic miso and half curry. The chicken itself was fried perfectly and delicious, though we both agreed the garlic miso was better than the curry. I personally couldn't really taste the garlic or the miso and was surprised by the salty flavors rather than sweet. The curry flavor got old real fast, and after a piece I was already tired of the flavor. I also tried the okonomiyaki ($7) which was super disappointing. It was too thin and the mayo looked it was vomited on there instead of being finely drizzled. I do appreciate that they make their menu vegetarian friendly. Half the menu is clearly labelled for vegans and vegetarians. read more

This place is always crowded on weekdays when I visit but so worth the wait. Every coworker knows about it and their quality of chicken and is really good with huge portions for a great price. If you love hot sauces there are tons of options here too with every basic brand such as tapatio, sriracha, cholula, etc. Highly reccommend trying the Oyakodon if you have never had it before, because the egg is perfect soufflé consistency with a sweet after taste that pairs perfectly with the crispy fried chicken. read more
Fried. and Chicken. Two words put together which create a heavenly, but deadly combination. I love that Aburaya takes Japanese karaage and elevates it so that it's the main bulk of the meal. I believe the lunch menu offers fewer flavors than dinner, but the quality is just the same. I love the miso garlic flavor, and the 8 piece is the way to go if you're dining with a friend, or have a huge appetite- these aren't little karaage pieces, so 4 pieces is definitely enough- especially with the rice and side salad (for an extra $2). My boyfriend and I also got veggie okonomiyaki on the side, which is super similar to takoyaki sans tako (octopus) but with veggies. Really tasty, and very very filling. Came here on a Friday night with a friend. This place is a tiny restaurant but it is really cute and has a really nice ambiance. Given that the place is quite small, it is really hard to get seating. You have to hoover over people as you notice they are leaving so you can get a seat. This place is BUSY!!! You must wait in line to place your order, and then you can either sit and eat it or take it to go. The menu is quite simple as it is Japanese style fried chicken. You can get other meat options, vegetable options, sides or make it a meal by adding rice and vegetables. There are options for everyone! They also have water cups, and beverages you can buy. I got the 4 piece garlic miso fried chicken. The chicken was well-seasoned and had a very nice taste. The chicken was not overly battered and it was not oily at all.The mixed greens and cabbage I could have done without. The cabbage is not cooked and is just there. The dressing to go with the mixed greens, I was not a fan of, but the chicken was fantastic and I would go back for it. read more

I've been following Aburaya forever and we finally got a chance to try them out! The fried chicken definitely delivers. We got the teriyaki and the garlic miso. I particularly liked the garlic miso and the dipping sauce it came with. Really flavorful. We also ordered the Poke, Grilled Shitake Mushroom, and the Deviled Avocado. While the Grilled Shitake was also really flavorful (make sure to squeeze the lime on there!) and tender, the poke and avocado were so so. The poke chunks were too a little too big. The deviled avocado looked good on the menu, but the egg wasn't seasoned and was pretty bland on a cold avocado. Nonetheless, still a great place to go. The fried chicken alone will have me coming back. We came In right when they opened the doors and it got really busy right after us. A true testament to this place. read more

I don't like in Oakland so I've been dreaming about their fried chicken since I've been back home. Their habanero spice was pretty spicy but not unbearable. You can appreciate the habanero flavor. The wasabi flavored one though is probably the best. You can get that wasabi nice and flavor without the spice overpowering the chicken. I absolutely loved the wedge of cabbage. It adds a nice crisp and refreshing break from the chicken. 10/10. read more
This place gets so packed during lunch but is worth the wait every time. I don't know what they put in their chicken or sauce but damn... give me more lol Street parking can be hard to find and finding a table inside the restaurant is a challenge in itself but lake Merritt is only a few steps away. read more

The food is probably amazing, let's start with that. This review is specifically for the delivery aspect of this spot. I don't get how you can send out food with no utensils or napkins. It just doesn't make an sense. Im going to have to eat this in 4 hours after I get home. Why wouldn't you send something to eat the food with? read more
So yummy! First time trying Aburaya was through Door Dash--food was great! Definitely recommend the Oyokodon--amazing chicken dish with egg, rice, seasoning, and mixed greens. Would be a lot for one person, recommend to split! Also got the Four Piece Fried Chicken with the Garlic Miso preparation. This was so crispy and tasty. Served with a cabbage head that we didn't end up eating. I don't recommend the Fried Cauliflower--I was thinking the cauliflower would be more of a tempura style deep fry but instead it was just kind of crispy and not really tender. This was a disappointing dish. Would go back for more fried chicken! read more

Holy fried chicken! I've been drooling over the photos at Aburaya for a while now- I somehow kept missing their hours since they are only open for dinner on Saturdays. When I ordered, they only had a limited menu available due to the shelter in place; however, this may have changed with the recent lifting of SIP in the Bay Area. Check their website for their updated menu; you can order online or over the phone (the prices seemed to be the same). I ended up just trying their Fried Chicken (Served w/Cabbage, Miso Ranch Dressing, 8pcs/$16, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=asvNJB2sNwp6K_zhQBYUhw&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg) this time around, and went with the highly recommended Garlic Miso. It was about a 25 minute wait for an order placed We also added the Orange Honey Aioli on the side for an additional $1, which was awesome! Their fried chicken is AMAZING, and super juicy and flavorful. Their chicken is shio-koji marinated, lightly battered with potato starch and fried in soybean oil. I loved that they use boneless and skinless chicken thighs. There are 4 sauces you can choose from (BBQ, Teriyaki, Karashi Honey, Orange Honey Aioli) and 4 dry spice blends (Garlic Miso, Curry, Shichimi, Sansho). I would recommend the orange honey aioli over the Garlic Miso, since the sauce added an additional layer of creaminess and sweetness to their fried chicken. I will definitely be back here for more fried chicken!! Parking will be the most difficult part about coming here, since there is limited street parking available. I'd highly recommend coming with another person so they can double park the car while you go in and grab your order. read more
Earlier in the day, I was in the area and happened to walk by Aburaya. I haven't had their fried chicken in a while and made it a point to get some for dinner tonight. Arriving at 4:30pm, I was able to find parking in the street three spaces from the restaurant. The dine-in tables have been moved to the sides to display the large selection of craft beers, sake, shochu, wine, sauces and souvenirs that are for sale. The line to the left is for ordering and to the right is for online/order pickups. The SIP menu has slight modifications, where umami salt seasoning for the fried chicken and many of the meat and fish izakaya items are no longer offered. I ordered a four piece BBQ fried chicken and an eight piece consisting for four garlic miso and four curry. My order was ready in about five minutes. Each order still include a cabbage wedge with miso ranch dressing. The BBQ chicken had a medium spice. The curry was very mild. I enjoyed the garlic miso, which was flavorful, the best out of the three. But I do miss my favorite, the umami salt. Their Japanese fried chicken is still delicious at the same reasonable prices given the large portion sizes. If you haven't tried, check of Aburaya. read more
So I was able to snag a photo this time!! Came here on a second date and I thought it was really cool! There is no indoor eating, so takeout is your only option. We ended up taking our food over to Lake Merritt so the food had cooled down a bit. My guy friend ended up getting the Fried Chicken Sando, which was absolutely massive!!! Like we joked about how this was the Mega Sandwich of all time because in order to get your mouth around it you literally had to strain your mouth. He also said the chicken had really good heat, like not killer heat but just enough to give you that nummy flavor! I ended up getting the four piece fried chicken and a side salad.... I honestly thought that I was gonna get small pieces of chicken and not 4 giant pieces of chicken that were the size of my face, like these pieces of chicken were like the equivalent to 12 chicken nuggets from McDonalds. The Garlic Miso Flavor of my Chicken was on point! I really enjoyed it, but I thought that the salad was necessary to cut though all of the flavor, like I needed a pallet cleanser. I would recommend! Aburaya has been one of my favorites! As their fried chicken are so moist and crispy (at the same time) with a variety of seasonings that you can choose from. I just realized we have not had Aburaya for months. Today, We ordered lunch boxes which included 4 pieces of chicken, rice, cabbage, and green. We picked Japanese curry and Karashi honey (new flavor). Both hit the spot as always! Yummy!! read more

Underwhelming meal. I was disappointed because I had this place bookmarked for a while. The chicken wasn't crispy, and neither was the "crispy" cauliflower which literally felt raw. I had to put oil on it and roast it myself in the oven when I got home to doctor it up. They give you a lot of chicken, but overall, isn't somewhere I'd return to because I can get just as tasty chicken at many other similar Asian fusion restaurants for less cost and more excitement to the menu. Went around dinner time (6:30 pm to be exact). Line was surprisingly not bad. It's a pretty small place so if you're coming in a big group, you might have to wait a while to get a table. Order came out pretty quickly. I ordered the Fried Chicken 8 piece - Garlic Miso and Orange Honey Aioli. Portions are pretty huge. I sort of came in assuming that it was going to have a similar size to karaage, but it's actually big in size. However, I'm not really a fan of huge amounts of cabbage and that happen to take up a lot of my rice plate. The chicken was pretty flavorful though. It tasted great! I liked both flavors a lot. Chicken was fairly tender and isn't badly priced. I recommend getting those two flavors of chicken!! My friend got the Karashi Honey and he thought that it was overpowered with horseradish flavor (wasabi + mustard all at once) and not very tender so it was kind of difficult for him to enjoy and eat his chicken. Overall, definitely give this place a try :) it's definitely a good spot. read more

The service here, even during covid-19 takeout, was friendly and welcoming. I ordered a 4 piece chicken using a Groupon, and it was delicious! I'm not sure if I'd pay the full $10 for the same order, but the larger pack might be more worth it. There's a huge selection of flavorings for the fried chicken, and the employees are super willing to help you decide which to pick! The perfect place for your Japanese fried chicken fix :) read more

I'm a regular here. They have some of the best Japanese fried chicken. Nice crispiness, juicy and flavorful. Though lately they have been very inconsistent with their portions. It used to be fair sized chicken thighs. Now some pieces are sized like a chicken nugget. Not really worth it anymore. Hope they fix this. read more

Aburaya, your name means "oil house" or "a place that fries" in Japanese. Sadly, after taking a few bites, I wanted to bury ya (you). Look, everybody loves fried chicken. However, not everybody (including this guy) will love Aburaya's Japanese fried chicken (JFC) because it's meh-diocre at best. I love chowing down on some good JFC aka karaage. But, for some reason the chicken here doesn't even taste fried. Japanese chicken isn't as crispy as normal fried chicken. However, this chicken had no crispiness. It was more like soggy and mushy. I got the garlic miso and tasted hardly any garlic or miso. Quite bland. Now I know why they have like 20 hot sauces. It's because the chicken has no flavor. I also got the wasabi coleslaw. Again, the wasabi heat factor was non-existent and lacked any back-of-the-head grasping heat. More like "wahhh... shabby". Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought I would be able to get some decent karaage chicken. But nope, the chicken here is kar-a-ppee (crappy). You would think that walking past all the people smoking weed on the sidewalks that I would have had the hella' munchies and devoured the JFC. Sadly, this was not the case. I'm saying a-boo-ya for Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken! What began from Chef Adachi Hiroyuki as a pop-up almost six years ago, Aburaya whose name means "oil shop" in Japanese, took over their current home in uptown area of downtown Oakland over three years ago. They have become such a success thanks to their deep-fried koji-marinated chicken thighs (also known as karaage) becoming the buzzworthy hit that it deserves to be and I am so glad that I had the chance order a lunch full of their signature karaage served two different ways on a recent weekday afternoon. In the times we are currently living in, they've gone full-on counter service and wait for your meal to be freshly prepared. As a result, they've closed not only their dining room by selling various international beers and logoed Aburaya swag, on top of closing down for now their other lunch time only fast-casual restaurant located two blocks away in downtown Oakland and consolidated it with their main restaurant here. Now that they've succeeded in becoming a full-blown successful restaurant their menu had expanded to include other entrees that aren't necessarily fried chicken, items such as poke bowls, fried tofu, and vegan soy-based drum sticks. Of course, I was here for their signature chicken and couldn't decide which type I wanted so I decided to order two dishes, their 4 piece Fried Chicken and their Fried Chicken Sando. With their Fried Chicken you get your choice of either a wet seasoning (or sauce) or a dry seasoning (or spice blend). Since I was taking public transportation home to enjoy my meal and I didn't want my chicken to get too soggy while in its takeout box, I decided to go with their mild Japanese Curry seasoning. Their cashier asked me if I wanted to make it rice bowl with rice and greens, instead I opted to go with an additional piece of chicken for additional 2 dollars. I was so enthralled with the abundance of chicken meat which was nicely balanced with the deep fried coating on each piece which was only enhanced by the flavors of the curry seasoning I ordered. I was slightly worried about the Fried Chicken Sando being a little soggy since their signature Aburaya BBQ Japanese style sauce covered the multiple pieces of chicken that came in the sandwich which came with avocado, arugula, onions, tomatoes, slaw on two pieces of Texas toast, but I was pleasantly surprised on how well everything held up after I took everything home and unpacked all of my food. A return visit is a must for me and Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken. I never would have even known it was here had it not been for all of the buzz they've earned over the years through the media and food blogs, which goes to prove the work they are doing to bring quality fusion Japanese food to the masses. Loyal fans are still coming for the twice-fried chicken, which is moist and flavorful, with a thin exterior crust that maintains its crunch even after being drenched in their various kinds of sauces, even in the current takeout-only situation we are all living. I can't wait to return one day and try some of their other dishes on their menu like their Fried Cauliflower and Aburaya Tots which sound intriguing and gooey, either way I'm scarfing those down like no tomorrow! Thanks to their delectable Fried Chicken I could come back once a week just to sample how they are paired with their various seasonings. I can't think of another place in the region that serves Japanese prepared chicken this flavorful, so I now have a local joint to come back to time and again. read more
Mmm I love Japanese fried chicken... aka bigger pieces of karaage! Glad this place is a few blocks from where I work. It's nice to have some juicy delicious pieces of miso garlic fried chicken with rice and salad for lunch every now and then. This place usually has a line but it moves pretty fast. Lots of cool underground decor around and they even sell Aburaya attire- shirts, hoodies, aprons, etc. They also have an area with plenty of sauce bottles so you can pick your poison. Staff is pretty friendly and service is efficient. Next time I'd like to try the matcha chocolate cake! read more
Checked this spot out and had the fried tofu rice bowl. The tofu was made deliciously it was fried crispy light and fluffy. It was seasoned but I wish I'd was seasoned a little bit more, the sauce they paired with it was a excellent choice of made up for what I felt the tofu lacked. Lol it may have been dressing for the big block of raw cabbage they give you with your order, I'm a vegetarian not a rabbit. read more

Are you guys offering any outdoor dining now that it is allowed in Alameda county? No one answering phone when I tried calling today.
Hi, we do not have outdoor seating so we are take out only. We will he closed this weekend for the holiday.
Is the vegan chicken cooked in separate oil than the traditional chicken and not cross contaminated?
Yes we have a vegan fryer for all our vegan dishes
Is Aburaya fried chicken okay for those on a keto diet?
The main chicken is breaded, and I think the fish is as well. They do have great cabbage and dipping sauce that is probably keto, as well as some veggie sides that are keto, but you will need to check about keto entrees.
Are the tater tots gluten-free?
Yes! Now all our sauces and everything made in house is gluten free.
What is 100% Gluten free, for celiacs?
We updated our menu in 2025 to all be gluten free. Everything made in house and on our menu is now gluten free except some desserts and drinks that are made outside of the restaurant.
