I had seen Abu's in the area and finally, after seeing watched a video about it, decided to stop in. The space is bright with a counter to order and pies galore on display. Of course, I had to try their signature, navy bean pie, which I love the fact that it comes in a 4 inch size. "This is quite literally the perfect size for me!" I thought to myself naively before trying it. I was wrong. I needed the large. I need to recipe. I was in awe (and as my boyfriend pointed out, likely hitting my protein goals as well). I'm sure there will be pre-orders for the holidays, and I'm definitely making a note to myself to place an order for bringing some to my family event events. I had also had a portion of their leftover carrot cake. This is some of if not the best carrot cake I've ever had in my life. The crust of the cake was simply perfection, everything was mixed in so well, and there were no awkward pieces of carrot that you would randomly get caught chewing on, and it was MOIST. I would like to think that this is also somewhat healthy for me to be indulging on as it's a vegetable, right? Finally I tried a slice of what I think is the pound cake. I didn't really love it but I did eat it all as it was the perfect quick energy breakfast for my the next morning at work. I love coming to Abu's for some fresh baked goods. They are a Brooklyn & Fulton St staple. It's small inside but there's a lot of yummyness going on. They offer pies & cakes. The bean pie here is legendary. I like their spicy cabbage patty it's got a nice zing to it and the callaloo patty is also very good. Love the courteous, welcoming and professional customer service. The pie crust on all the pies has great texture and flavor. I have had four of their flavors. I can not decide which is my favorite. I love them all. The coconut custard is filled with coconut flakes and an egg custard. The sweet potato is delicious. The pecan pie has plenty of chopped pecans and great gooey insides. The bean pie is above every other bean pie I have had in my life. You can taste the fresh ingredients, vanilla, butter, cinnamon etc. All the pies are delicious and perfect anytime if the day. They also come in different sizes. Pocket size, pocketbook size and shopping bag size. If you want to order for the holidays it is best to order in advance, they may not have the size you want. I ordered half a dozen small bean pies online from Abu's and they were by far the best bean pies I have ever eaten. I have eaten bean pies from various bakers in Philly and Jersey and none of them are as good as these. The customer service was excellent. Everything was well packed and shipped efficiently. Sorry to say it was just OK there was too much of something In it or maybe not enough of something else...I couldn't put my Finger on it but it wasn't bean pie that I knew back in the day. It wasn't bad but when you have a taste in your mouth for something from way back... I don't know maybe my bougie palate has surpassed my Brooklyn roots. Bean pie: it's simply amazing. I would have never thought a bean pie could be so good. It tastes delicious, the texture is great. 2. Pecan pie: it's great! Intense nut flavor, just the right amount of sweetness 3. Coconut pie: it's good. I often crave custard pies and this one fits the bill. Not mind-blowing like the first two, but solid. 4. We went here to support Black owned businesses, and also because the sign said bean pies and I had no idea what those were. First if all, the owner is a gentleman. He took the time to explain how the pies taste, and what the best variety to choose were. Let me tell you, that was my first time ordering navy bean pie, but it certainly won't be the last. It the perfect amount of sweet. Along with the coconut custard pie, it was the star of Thanksgiving. In addition, the carrot load made a delicious treat to indulge in on the ride home. I often opted for the Bean pies . To those not from that era or from New York the word beam and pie probably doesn't go together. A baking tradition and recipe actually started by the Nation of Islam, you'd be surprised how damn good these pies are. I used to eat at least once a week. This spot in Brooklyn is a gem. It's great to find a place that still bakes their own goods. I mentioned the bean pies, but they also have sweet potato pie and a coconut custard pie that is slamming. I ordered the banana pudding on the same day a fellow Yelper mentioned it not looking very fresh and had the same experience. I thought maybe it just needed to be stirred but I should have trusted my instincts, shortly after tasting it I was struck with a stomach bug that kept me in bed for two days! I also purchased cake which looked dry and stale so I had to throw it out. Please be mindful of your customers and dispose of food items that are likely not suited for consumption. I do a love a nice baked good. I'm happy I finally stopped into this place. First of all, this is a community staple for not just the local Muslim community, but for Bedstuy and Brooklyn as a whole. I finally decided to try a navy bean pie after all my years of life thinking "ill...beans...and pie...nah, I'm good." How did it take me this long to find you. Bean pie is very smooth, sweet & cinnamon-y with a crust that is fresh, crumbly, substantial. I had a mini bean pie but will be back tonight to try their coconut & sweet potato one. & a slice of red velvet. Am I the only person that LOVES bean pies? It is 1 of 3 things that I got from my father. As I got older I never really knew where to get them. I just knew he got them from the men in the suits. When I got to college and would drive home during breaks or a random weekend, I would purposely take the BK bridge home so I could see the Muslim brothers in the suits with their paper and bean pies. I would shout in the car "Bean Pie my brother!!" My friends would look at me crazy in the car. But I had to get my 2 mini pies. The bean pie has a taste that my tastebuds definitely agree with. It's definitely in my top 5 of bean pies that I've had over the years. Overall, a mixed experience. Our red velvet cake had two clearly burnt layers - a first for me at a commercial bakery. They should have been tossed if someone forgot about them and left them too long. And they weren't just a little burnt - they were really blackened and charred tasting. Too bad, because the cake otherwise could have been very nice. The sweet potato pie was very tasty, but the crust should have been pre-baked. That would have gotten rid of the raw, uncooked pie crust flavor, particularly when the crust is clearly not made with butter. Gotta pre-cook! The filling, though, was really delicious, which is the main reason I'm giving this place 3 instead of 2 stars. Would I try it again? Yes, I probably would as we're often in this neighborhood. Price: one smile on my face for $5 please! The price didn't surprise me, because the slice...goodness gracious. It's for two or three people, so if you finish this in one sitting, you probably are a cake master and I need to know your secrets. Quality: Wasn't a fan. Very dry cake. VERY!! I am lactose intolerant and needed milk after that if that tells you anything. Currently, I am an unofficial cake extraordinaire (have been since a kid) and this cake did not fit the bar. If you're don't need a big one, they have small ones too. Sharing not necessary. Cookies, brownies, banana pudding, and possibly the best feature of the shop: Cake trimmings. $3 for a big container of exceptionally moist and pure cuts of cake, double chocolate, German chocolate, carrot, and an extraordinary red velvet. I have never been a fan of the ultimate flavor mentioned, but Abu's has a flavor so clean, a texture so tender, and sweetness just right...it's pretty radical. The price, won't be bested by any other shop. What really counts though is that there are good people here. They care, and they bake with heart. I ordered on Doordash, whoever was working today forgot to pack up half of my order. I'm so furious that I really want to give one star but that wouldn't be right because the bean pie and cakes are delicious. What upsets me is that they didn't even try to rectify the situation saying they don't have a delivery person to bring the rest of my order.
