But first a little history: "Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie bakery was founded in Brooklyn in 2009 by sisters and pie makers Melissa Elsen and Emily Elsen. The sisters originally custom-baked pies in their Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment before opening their first brick and morter retail location in Gowanus, Brooklyn in the Spring of 2010." I first patronized this wonderful pie shop @2011. How did I discover it? NY magazine featured an article on the shop and I just discovered Gowanus and voila.. I remember my first pie slice.. checkerboard and I believe the sisters sliced it for me! I love the atmosphere, farmhouse tables, lace curtains and of course PIES! I was in the mood for something totally different.. I stared at the menu and the pies placed neatly on a table behind the ordering station. Hmmm.. Salty honey? Strawberry rhubarb? Grapefruit custard? Black Bottom Oat? Grapefruit intrigued me and I decided to take a slice home. As I left, there were patrons devouring coffee and PIE on a lazy Sunday afternoon. So how was it? Circumference? Crust? The cheesecake part was lovely. The cheesecake crust was the best part. It wasn't graham cracker, but house-made perfection and if the entire cake was made out of it, we would be happy. Doubles: 4 stars. The regular (vegan chickpeas) had a delicate flavor but was still well spiced. It is just messy and difficult to eat on the go. The shrimp double was also flavorful although the shrimp was a bit over being in the warmer. Currant Roll: 4 stars. We were informed this is their most popular item and a must get - so we did - and loved it. It is filled with so many currants, is balanced with a delicate sweetness that didn't overwhelm and the pastry itself was baked to perfection. It tastes even better warm. Guava strudel: 5 stars when heated. That guava inside the pastry needs to be bottled up and sold there...I would buy it every single time. Beef patty: 4.5 stars - Here is the thing with this one - it is not a traditional beef patty as the ones they make at multiple shops in that area. This patty is more like a soft fluffy bread pastry with a mild beef filling. It tastes so surprisingly good that we got two more to go. Banana pudding: 3.5 stars - It is frozen and we needed to wait for it to thaw out but once it did - it was so unusual as they use pieces of their vanilla spongecake with the pudding. You get a lot of vanilla flavor and perhaps not enough banana so when we got home, we cut up pieces of banana and added it in. I like a lot of creamy pudding though and the cake kinda soaked it up. Customer service: 5 stars all day long We would always go back and look forward to going again.

Upon delivery, we noticed the slices were a bit smaller than we expected, and the tips were broken off a bit. The pies came at room temperature and so we enjoyed them as is. I enjoyed the sweet filling and crisp pecan crust of the brown honey pecan slice, and my boyfriend appreciated the small, whole blueberries in that slice. We both noted that the pies weren't overly sweet, which we appreciated. While I can't say this is the best pie I've had in the city, the rest of the pie menu looks intriguing and the reviews definitely show a lot of loyal fans, so I'd like to try this place again.

The dough of the roll was so moist and chewy. I could have just had that dough sans any sweetness and been satisfied! We had to take the rest to go because there is no way anyone could eat that in one setting! Nibbled and shared it the rest of the weekend. Decor is so sweet and a lot of room to sit and visit while enjoying everything about this place. They even offer baking classes.
