I wouldn't have thought I'd be compelled to leave a review for a service station, but exceptional service motivates exceptional actions. I dropped into ACA on a weekday looking for a smog check without an appointment. I was greeted immediately and quickly given some minor paperwork to fill out, told that they'd be able to get to it right away, and that if I wanted to wander around a bit they'd be done in about 45 minutes. I had some work calls to be on, so I elected to stay in their waiting room instead, and enjoyed the breeze and lounged in a chair. In less than 30 minutes, they were calling me up to the counter to hand me my test results (passed) and to tell me to have a good day. It feels weird to say it about a smog check, but the whole process was quick, efficient, easy, friendly, and I might even go so far as to say... enjoyable?? Oh, and I used their restroom on the way out; and another thing I thought I'd never say about a service station's restroom: it was super clean and nice! read more

Located in Long Beach California, Advanced Computer Automotive (ACA) provides a full range of automotive services for pretty much all makes and models. It was recommended by our friends, and as it usually happens, it turned out great. Working with auto repair and service shops is something all drivers have to deal with, and my personal experiences have ranged from Decent to 'felt being taken advantage of'. Past advice has been related to 'paying more money' to work directly with a dealer...if you accept that they will charge you more upfront, then you can assume they will 1) do a better job in fixing your car and 2) do a better job in diagnosing any future problems 3) be more accountable if something goes wrong. Owning Hondas pretty much during our past 30 years has meant dealing with a lot of Honda service departments, and unfortunately two of my absolute worst experiences have been with unscrupulous and/or incompetent service managers at a Honda dealer. What made it worse was how Honda of America seemed to accept my feedback around that, but at the end of the day, couldn't do anything about it since 'each dealership is independent'. And there is definitely something amiss around their customer surveys...they only seem to be sent if there wasn't any problems with the appointment. Won't buy a Honda again in the U.S., that's for sure. So this is my very negative attitude when having to deal with car servicing. But we still own our 10 year old CR-V, and it was time for an oil change and 2 year SMOG check. A couple of our neighbors have recommended ACA to us (and both can be particular, so no false recommendations here), so decided to give them a try for the first time. ACA has been around for about 20 years. They are only open during 8 - 5 M-F, and it's first come first serve. The place is very large for an independent shop, with 22 service bays. My wife had dropped off these neighbors for their car repairs previously, so knew how busy it could get as the day goes on: came in a little after they opened. It was already busy, but there were customer parking spots open. You walk in, and you are IMMEDIATELY greeted across the counter with a 'Hello' and "We'll be right with You!" if there is a line. There is space for 4 counters working at a time. We got to work with Adam, who is the owner/president. My wife had already investigated their website to grab new customer coupons: $59.95 oil change special for synthetic blend; $51.20 SMOG check including certificate. Both were accepted. Adam noted how busy it was already in the morning, so apologetically quoted us a 3 hour wait time which was fine for us (as we had prepared to take a long walk, exploring the surrounding area). In a little over 2 hours, we got a text stating that the serving had been complete. We slowly walked back and noticed that all parking spots had filled up. We checked back into the same counter, interacting with a different, but also friendly service rep who quickly helped us. There was no additional upsell on recommended servicing...he knew we wanted to be on our way, and he wanted to service the next customer. When we got home, I once again tried to file my auto renewal, and this time there was no message stating we needed a SMOG check. That's efficiency. One thing I noticed is how many retired drivers (especially older women) there were as customers with their older model cars. Word has gotten around on ACA's customer service and accuracy. I think this one place that makes its profits off of volume, instead of squeezing every cent off of a customer who walks through the door. And customers who need car repair can be very leery and upset to begin with, so reps have to be extra good at customer relations. ACA has a really good model here. read more

I probably should have read other women's review first. I know nothing about car and I feel I might have taken advantage as well? I brought my car for oil leak (front timing cover and upper valve cover, which my mechanic friend found out) First time they said cap was loose so I left my car for a day and it wasn't from cap. ($200 for that) They cleaned and did oil leak test with color dye. They told me it was from timing cover and upper valve cover and it was $1600 to repair and I had to leave car for two and half days. Oil was still leaking and this time they said $2500 to repair. I decided to get rid of my car. Wish I knew all the problems in the first place. I wouldn't have repaired anything and got new tires I ended up wasting close to $3000.. The whole process and outcome was frustrating. ACA has serviced my cars for 15 years - wide variety of makes and models. They do quality work, explain everything, charge what they quote you. The one area for improvement I have observed is turnaround time, which is often an extra day or even sometimes two, depending on the job. Obtaining parts and work volume both impact timeliness. They are packed each time I'm in there so I believe their work volume prevents quick repairs, however this also speaks to the level of trust they have in the community. A lot of folks rely on ACA. If I'm being totally honest.. I'm not sure they are the most affordable shop in town. But at this point in my life, I'm willing to pay knowing that I'm not getting ripped off and that the repair is going to be done correctly. You have a relationship with a place for 15 years, you feel like if something goes wrong you can go in and ask for someone by name and they will make it right for you. Which has been the case, a time or two. Relationships matter in life, and I'm glad to report, they certainly do at ACA. read more

Adam and the crew are the epitome of professional, and have always given great service. When my Kia Soul started showing signs of a known Kia engine issue, I took it to ACA for a proper diagnosis. Sure enough, the piston issue was the cause of my engine's poor performance, and I was able to get to the Kia dealership in time for a warranty repair. I highly recommend them for any automotive maintenance and repair concerns. My only complaint is that they're no longer open on Saturdays. read more

I've been going to ACA Automotive for my smog checks for years. I'm driving a 1998 Toyota so I'm paying more but it's worth it to keep a good car on the road that is safe and cost effective. TAKE UR CAR ELSEWHERE*** Brought my vehicle here because the check engine light was on . The man in the front with the grey hair and glasses made me fill out forms and said they would take a look and told me to leave the car . Adam then called me back with a price of over 2,000 to fix my car . I told them not to follow through and said I would pick up my vehicle . I picked up my car and the man in the front told me to pay $190 I told him HE NEVER told me there would be a cost neither did Adam when he called me to quote me a price . I was very unhappy and the man tossed my keys at me with sarcasm on the table . This type of treatment is absolutely unacceptable. And yes there is other shops that' don't rip you off with a $190 cost just to check ur vehicle . I understand automotive work can be expensive, but transparency and respectful customer service should be standard. Unfortunately, I didn't experience either here. I won't be returning, and I would caution others to get a second opinion before trusting this shop. read more

The main issue I have with car repair places is that when. i know what's wrong, they won't listen to me. I don't know everything. But i know what i do and don't want to do with a car. When I was younger and my time had no other value, i'd fix anything. Not so now. I knew my Jeep needed a new compressor. I checked several places that wanted to charge me to determine what i needed. Nope. I told these guys what I needed. Adam called me back and asked me why I'd come to that conclusion. I told him. He gave me a quote. I brought the Jeep in immediately. The repairs were done in one day. They did what I asked. My bill was less than the estimate. How perfect is that? This is a big, high volume, repair place. They do volume, surely. A couple of weeks ago, I went to Sam's Club to get new tires installed. Sam's Club was able to remove 19 of my 20 lug nuts, and they rounded the last wheel nut. Of course, it was teh tire that had the flat tire and could not be driven. The Sam's Club manager told me they could not fix their mistake and I had to be towed to ACA Automotive (AAA recommended). ACA has the best mechanics. They are top notch professionals and really know their stuff. They worked their magic and were able to remove the rounded lug nut, with no damage to my fancy 19" rims!
