Academy Bistro is a charming spot tucked into Ashworth Village in the heart of downtown Cary. I really appreciated that they accept reservations -- a nice touch for a busy Saturday evening. Our party of five was seated right away at a table that was ready upon arrival, which set a great tone for the evening. We started with cocktails and an order of Brussels sprouts to share. The Brussels sprouts were plentiful and absolutely delicious -- crispy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The cocktails were just okay, nothing special, but still enjoyable. For our entrées, we ordered the bison meatloaf, short ribs, prime New York strip, and chicken Milanese. Every dish was outstanding -- full of flavor and beautifully presented. By the end of the meal, we had all joined the clean plate club! Our server was fantastic: attentive, friendly, and perfectly paced throughout the evening. Came here for lunch yesterday and had an OK experience. We were a little worried when we arrived because it was during peak lunch hours, but surprisingly there were a bunch of tables available. Excellent! The first negative was that we had to wait a long while for our server to swing by our table. There seemed to be a decent number of staff working there, so it was frustrating to wait so long, especially considering that the restaurant wasn't super busy. Anyway, eventually the server came and my wife and I ordered the Bistro Roast Beef for ourselves and the kid's mac and cheese for our kid :) The next negative was that the food took forever to come out. It just felt too long for lunch, especially because it's not like we ordered anything insanely complicated (and, not to repeat myself, but the restaurant wasn't that busy). We had a wonderful meal the other evening. It has been a while since we ate here and it truly is very good. We started with calamari which was tender and came with a nice sweet chili sauce. We ordered cheeseburgers and they were like warm but not hot and the fries had started to get cold by the time they brought us our food. We went to Academy Street Bistro last night, and for me, it was a 3/5 experience. 1. The Server Forgot Part of Our Order When we placed our order, the server didn't write anything down, and as expected, forgot a few items. I really don't get why restaurants don't require servers to use notepads--it would prevent mistakes and make splitting checks so much easier. Why is this still a thing?! 2. The Beer Spill Situation When my wife got her beer in a can, she asked for a glass--not to have it poured, just a glass. The server took it upon himself to pour it, and somehow spilled a good amount while doing it. Not just a few drops--a noticeable amount. If you spill that much, shouldn't you replace the can? 3. The Outdoor Furniture is Awful The tables are so flimsy that when you rest your arms on them, they tilt toward you--along with everything on top. The materials are cheap and unstable, making it uncomfortable to sit and eat. 4. Price vs. Quality Doesn't Match My wife ordered the Ahi Tuna, and she liked it. I had the Breaded Chicken with mashed potato-like something, and it was pretty good. BUT--we all agreed that the food and the place itself are overpriced. $17 for Ahi Tuna (before tax) and $30 for Breaded Chicken feels too expensive for a place with this level of furniture, tableware, and service. In my opinion, this place should be priced lower. Just because it's in a historic location doesn't mean you can charge premium prices for a mediocre setup. I know at least 10 places with the same price range but with way better interiors, quality furniture, digital ordering systems, stylish tableware, and top-notch service that pays attention to small details. read more

Well first off the prices are extremely high. I understand it's a high rent location but considering this I think asking for a different available vegetable when one doesn't want the vegetable with a $39 lamb shank entry should be accommodated. Chef did not agree. No bread was offered with two expensive entrees ordered & a $14 martini that had too much lemon in it to be even consumed left me with a feeling I won't return. On the positive side the other diner praised the beef short ribs. Server was clearly embarrassed by the chef's decision. He tried by making some bread & I appreciate that effort. They were happy to answer questions, make recommendations, and ensure we were taken care of throughout the meal. That kind of service makes all the difference. Sadly, I sent this as an email to the contact on the website Joe@academystreetbistro.com. Two weeks later, I have not heard from anyone, so I will post it here. I wanted to avoid this, but at a certain point, I would rather others know what we experienced. Dear Joe, I am writing to bring to your attention the unacceptable service my party of five experienced during our visit on Saturday, September 14th, when we celebrated my wife's birthday. As someone who has dined at Academy Street Bistro many times over the years, I was both saddened and embarrassed by the cascade of service failures we encountered that evening. Most concerning was the issue with the mussels we ordered. When we told our server, Maddy, that the mussels smelled and tasted like they had gone bad, she informed us that she had earlier shared the same concerns with the kitchen staff, but the kitchen staff "laughed and dismissed" her concerns and sent them out anyway. This represents a serious lapse in food safety standards. When food safety concerns are raised, they should be taken seriously, not dismissed with laughter, and still served. While we appreciate that the mussels were eventually removed from our bill, they should never have been served in the first place. The service timing was equally problematic. It took over 20 minutes to receive a simple whiskey neat order as we timed it. After 15 minutes of waiting, Maddy acknowledged she had just placed the drink order. This is an unreasonable wait time for any beverage, particularly during a birthday celebration. Perhaps most frustrating was having our appetizers, salads, and entrées all delivered simultaneously. Someone from the party worried that this might happen, so they specifically went inside before being served to ensure that the food would be served as one would imagine, in courses, not all at once. Yet we found ourselves with a table completely covered in food. Maddy acknowledged this was her fault for not communicating with the kitchen, but the damage was done. We were forced to rush through our meals to try to enjoy them at the proper temperature, unable to enjoy conversation or additional drinks during the birthday celebration. The burrata salad went completely uneaten and wasted because we had no choice but to prioritize the hot entrées before they cooled. What made this experience even more disappointing was the complete absence of management intervention. Despite multiple significant issues, no manager came to our table to address our concerns or attempt to salvage the evening. When service failures of this magnitude occur, particularly during a special celebration, management involvement is essential. Simple gestures, such as offering to keep entrées warm in the kitchen while we enjoyed our appetizers, or providing a complimentary dessert for the birthday celebrant, could have demonstrated that you value your customers and are committed to making things right. As someone who has chosen Academy Street Bistro for numerous dining occasions, I am genuinely disappointed that such fundamental service breakdowns marred what should have been a special birthday celebration. I visited Academy Street Bistro for lunch for the first time today, having intended - but failing - to go any number of other times. Since it was just going to be me today, I made a reservation to sit at the bar. (Plus: You can reserve a seat at the bar or at a table, indoors or outdoors.) It's a lovely little space. The bar is small, but comfortable. Becca was the bartender. I asked her about the fried calamari and she recommended it - "Not at all rubbery." When it arrived, she was spot on. Small, but tender pieces, perfectly seasoned. I would definitely order that again. The short ribs weren't served in a traditional way but fashioned into a circular mound. Wonderful taste and texture without being messy. The Deets: Around the old downtown Cary area near the train station, I stopped into Academy Street Bistro for a late lunch. I remembered I had gone to a Yelp event here years ago but had not made it back since then. I was seated immediately in the high top table area near the bar. I wanted just a couple of things but not a huge lunch, and their appetizer/starters menu did the trick for this need. I started off with their Grilled Brie selection. This choice was a good one, the Brie was warm and soft with a cooked apple type topping that was the perfect complement to the cheese and served with crackers. My next selection was their starter size of their Jumbo-Lump Crab Cakes (with Romesco, shaved almonds, and fennel). I guess I was thinking about the word "Jumbo" but then realized that this was a starter portion of the crab cakes when it arrived. The crab cakes themselves are not huge in size but definitely good in taste and I enjoyed them very much with the tomato based Romesco sauce being a nice burst of flavor to complement the crab cakes. I had thought I would do a lighter meal but when my server Kalli (who was great, by the way) mentioned dessert, I decided to give it a go. I went with the featured cheesecake which was chocolate bourbon pecan cheesecake made at Blue Moon Bakery within the same shopping area (Ashworth Village) that Academy Street Bistro is in. The cheesecake was delicious and I could taste each of the three distinct flavors in a nice balance. In all, it was a delicious late lunch and I enjoyed my visit. Are they the most inexpensive meal around? No. Is it a nice but casual, good meal experience? Pros: The patio area was beautiful and romantic at night, nice wine list for a small place, and the mushroom risotto and baked brie were phenomenal. Cons: The service was marginal at best (didn't really know the draft beers even though menu said to ask your server), the app plates we were initially given were filthy and the server seemed unconcerned, and the charcuterie board was lacking compared to many others of similar price in the Triangle. Overall, we had a nice time. The beers and plates were server issues that could have been avoided but I'm not going to judge the place overall due to one employee. Service is always exceptional and the restaurant has a warm charm with local artists work displayed. We were quickly seated outside on a busy Friday evening. The weather was perfect (not too cold) for early fall. I enjoyed the seasonal cider they had and my husband had a beer from their menu which is packed with a great wine list, cocktails and other drink options. To start, we had the Baked Brie. If you love cheese, do yourself a favor and order it. It was so warm and delicious with jam and sliced nuts. Served with bread and it was such a delight. I had the Wild Mushroom Risotto which was cooked perfectly! I love mushrooms and this was such a bowl of comfort on a early fall evening. I highly recommend. We were meeting a friend that lives in this area so I looked for a spot to grab some dinner. Academy Street Bistro had reservations available (on Resy) at the time we wanted, reviews and menu looked good. We were greeted by friendly hostesses and when we stated our reservation for a high top in bar area, we were given the option to have a table in the dining area as one had just opened up. That was really nice, but we decided to keep our bar seats as that felt more comfortable for us. Drinks: I ordered a Bourbon Rose and my husband had an old fashioned. I really enjoyed my drink while my husband said his old fashioned wasn't his favorite, but drinkable. There are many wine options here as well, and full bar. Food: We got a charcuterie board to start which was typical variety and good. Nothing we didn't like. I ordered the scallops served with cheddar grits and shaved Brussels sprouts. He got the rib eye served with sautéed spinach with garlic and fingerling potatoes. My dish was amazing! The scallops were so tender. The grits were also delicious. My husband says the steak was very good, cooked perfectly medium rare and he even ate the spinach! Main entrees vary around $25-40 range, appetizers $15-20, so for us it was higher than a usual night out but I will say the quality was top notch. We skipped dessert because we were quite full but I did see some beautiful cake slices at tables around me. You could certainly linger here for a nice long dining experience and not feel rushed at all. I like that. The service was very good, easy going vibe in bar area, we had a nice time. I got the feeling this is a go to for local families as I saw a few tables of perhaps parents and adult children meeting up for dinner. This was a special birthday for me that my husband booked and requested a quiet booth. It's a Monday night. It was a 7 o'clock reservation we walked in. There was an empty booth. They would not put us there saying that that was reserved though there were no rest restaurant menus on there there were four people in the other booth. I took my grandma out on the town when she came to visit from New York on the way to Florida. She is such a cutie. This place is a very cute bistro - it's pretty tiny and sandwiched between other shops in downtown Cary. It does have an artsy/Euro feel. on the food: There weren't tons of vegan (that's OK - I'm a pain) options on the menu so I ordered two salads (full sized - I have no shame about it) minus the cheese. I had a roasted beet salad with arugula and a pear walnut salad without the Gorgonzola. Of the two salads the pear walnut was my favorite. My grandma got two appetizers as her meal - seafood that she was extremely happy with. I was pleased with my choices and a little tipsy from their cocktails and rose (bonus). Great place on Academy Street in Ashworth Village, across from the post office. I met a friend there for early afternoon drinks (Ah! The joy of semi-retirement!) and we sat under umbrellas in their outdoor dining area. We had some wine and I had the Ahi ceviche since I'd not had anything to eat. It came with plenty of fresh yellow corn tortilla chips and would have been an excellent shared app, but my friend wasn't hungry (yet!). After an hour or so, into her second glass of wine and the waiter stopping by 35 times and changing out the lunch menu for dinner menus (thanks for the friendly smiles, Adam!), we decided to have dinner. She started with the beef and barley soup, and we split the arugula/beet salad as well as their charcuterie. I had a few bites of the soup, and it was hearty but not overpowering. The barley was just perfect and the broth wasn't too salty (the usual failing for this type of soup.) I ordered a Moscow Mule to go with my meal, and it was amazing! My friend had never had one before, and her eyes widened when she tried a sip. "Wow! That is quite tasty!" They also offer other "mules" with different spirits, but I had to drive home, so these will have to wait. The salad was, as promised, huge and easily shared with the extra plate Adam provided. There was avocado, diced beets, a good knob of chèvre, and dried cranberries mixed with arugula and covered with a light balsamic dressing and chopped pistachios. The charcuterie was the only slightly disappointing item for me. It was beautifully presented and had three great differences in meats (prosciutto, a hot salami, and a more mildly flavored one), in addition to a good dab of stone-ground mustard and honeycomb. But the cheeses lacked variety. There were two cheddars and a third that was texturally the same as a cheddar. There were no soft-ripened or hard offerings, nothing with any flavor or blue veins, other than the cheddar with a bit of mustard seed. Also, the cubes seemed to have been cut and stored a while ago, so they were a bit dry. The salad centerpiece and toast points all made for a nice offering, but I'd have loved another bit of the chèvre from the salad or maybe some Humbolt Fog or Brie. But then, I'm a bit of a cheese snob. My friend raved about it several times, so Your Milege May Vary. All in all, a fun place that has added to Cary's increasingly diverse offerings downtown. Very friendly service and smiles from all the staff. I know there were several other restaurants that have been in this space since I moved from Cary a decade ago, but this is the first one I'd like to revisit. read more
