    Bison meatloaf

Academy Bistro is a charming spot tucked into Ashworth Village in the heart of downtown Cary. I really appreciated that they accept reservations -- a nice touch for a busy Saturday evening. Our party of five was seated right away at a table that was ready upon arrival, which set a great tone for the evening. We started with cocktails and an order of Brussels sprouts to share. The Brussels sprouts were plentiful and absolutely delicious -- crispy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The cocktails were just okay, nothing special, but still enjoyable. For our entrées, we ordered the bison meatloaf, short ribs, prime New York strip, and chicken Milanese. Every dish was outstanding -- full of flavor and beautifully presented. By the end of the meal, we had all joined the clean plate club! Our server was fantastic: attentive, friendly, and perfectly paced throughout the evening. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a nice view of the downtown streets through the windows. The only downside was the price -- the meal was on the expensive side. Still, given the quality of the food and service, it felt worth the splurge. Overall, Academy Bistro is a wonderful dining experience for anyone looking for excellent food, great service, and a cozy downtown vibe.

    Pork chop, greens, corn soufflé

LOVE this place. The service is always spot-on and the food is excellent. BF had the shrimp and grits which may be the best I have ever tasted. I had the pork chop and I don't know what was the best part of that dish - the corn soufflé was fantastic, the greens were great and the pork chop was perfect. We were part of a party with little ones and our server was gracious to all of us.

We went to Academy Street Bistro last night, and for me, it was a 3/5 experience. 1. The Server Forgot Part of Our Order When we placed our order, the server didn't write anything down, and as expected, forgot a few items. I really don't get why restaurants don't require servers to use notepads--it would prevent mistakes and make splitting checks so much easier. Why is this still a thing?! 2. The Beer Spill Situation When my wife got her beer in a can, she asked for a glass--not to have it poured, just a glass. The server took it upon himself to pour it, and somehow spilled a good amount while doing it. Not just a few drops--a noticeable amount. If you spill that much, shouldn't you replace the can? 3. The Outdoor Furniture is Awful The tables are so flimsy that when you rest your arms on them, they tilt toward you--along with everything on top. The materials are cheap and unstable, making it uncomfortable to sit and eat. 4. Price vs. Quality Doesn't Match My wife ordered the Ahi Tuna, and she liked it. I had the Breaded Chicken with mashed potato-like something, and it was pretty good. BUT--we all agreed that the food and the place itself are overpriced. $17 for Ahi Tuna (before tax) and $30 for Breaded Chicken feels too expensive for a place with this level of furniture, tableware, and service. In my opinion, this place should be priced lower. Just because it's in a historic location doesn't mean you can charge premium prices for a mediocre setup. I know at least 10 places with the same price range but with way better interiors, quality furniture, digital ordering systems, stylish tableware, and top-notch service that pays attention to small details.

I'm not sure if I got the correct sandwich or what but for me the bread was hard and the sandwich was very dry. Great customer service. She was so great to even find me some alcohol free wine. But the food was just not for me unfortunately.

    Special and pork chop entree

Excellent neighborhood bistro. Food and service always excellent. The chefs specials are always a treat.

Starting to empty out at 2:30 on Saturday. More people outside.

Nice - indoor and outdoor seating and some gluten free. They have homemade gluten free bread so I had a BLT instead of a salad and it was amazing. The best BLT I have ever had. My husband had Lobster Bisque was excellent and crab cake salad was also great. A total win today and a very relaxing lunch.

I heard from the neighbors that if we sit outside, we'll have to pay extra $5 for the heater if we wanted to turn it on?

It is a heated patio at night (no surcharge). At lunch you can sit inside or pay the $5 surcharge since propane went from $16 last year to $21 this year. With a $3-6 profit per lunch table...doesn't make sense to lose $2-5 per table if they are…

Does this restaurant offer a kids menu and high chairs?

No kids menu or kid friendly items on the menu.

Do they have a children's menu?

We do have children food options but do not print them on a separate menu. Ask your server and they will be happy to present you with the options.

The Chicken & Waffles was my favorite! The chicken was nice and crispy and the waffle was a sweet corn waffle. It came with these little morsels of grilled peaches and I wish there had been more of them because I could've eaten a whole bowl of them. The Peck and Plume Bowl was my least favorite dish but that's only because it was VERY tart and I wasn't expecting that. It has passion fruit, banana, blueberries, yogurt, granola, coconut flakes, and bee pollen. We also got the Eggs Benedict which came with country ham and wilted spinach on top. The ham was a bit salty but the breakfast potatoes on the side were great and the eggs were cooked perfectly jammy.

We ordered the Butrata instead....but it never came so I can't comment on it. They also didn't take it off the bill which I didn't notice until our drive home. The server was engaging and sweet. He was willing to answer questions but seemed a little weeded. Perhaps he's new. Still her was personable and kind. The drinks, a Dirty Martini and Hibiscus Tonic were fantastic. I'm on a quest to find the best Dirty Martini in the area and this is in contention. I ordered the burger and my husband got the shrimp and grits. We'd say they were "fine". Neither the meat nor shrimp were seasoned. That said they were cooked well. The grits were well done and the relish was on target. The fries were also fantastic. Overall, it was a good experience sitting on the beautiful patio with music coming into the space from the park. With a few tweaks this could get a better rating.

We stopped by on a Sunday morning and the place was buzzing--I'm guessing many diners were coming from church. Thankfully we made a reservation because every table seemed to fill up quickly. To kick things off, we each ordered a refreshing Lone Rider wheat beer along with two appetizers. The Shoestring Okra Fries were a fun twist on a Southern classic--crispy, lightly seasoned with chili citrus seasoning, and even better dipped in the tangy lime mayo. We also shared the Artichoke Dip, which arrived bubbling hot, creamy, and perfect for spreading on the toasted bread. For brunch, we went with two very different dishes, and both were excellent. The Asparagus & Mushroom Omelet was fluffy and packed with flavor from the goat cheese and pickled onions, while the buttery biscuit with jam on the side was a nice Southern touch. The Fried Green Tomato & Bacon Benedict was the standout of the meal. Crispy fried green tomatoes, perfectly poached eggs, smoky bacon, and rich hollandaise came together beautifully without feeling overly heavy. We couldn't leave without one more treat. The Strawberry Kiwi Margarita was bright, fruity, and balanced with just enough tequila and a zesty spiced citrus rim to keep it refreshing. To finish, we shared an Affogato, the perfect ending with creamy ice cream and a shot of hot espresso. If you're planning a Sunday brunch in Cary, make a reservation--you'll be glad you did. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.

If it's a beautiful day, I'd definitely recommend sitting outside instead. Still, the inside has a cozy, laid-back feel that works well. Shoutout to Qua, who was both the hostess and our server. She was welcoming, attentive, and handled everything smoothly, even as a few more parties came in while she was the only one serving at the time. One thing I really appreciated was that she let us know upfront what items were out of stock before we even looked at the menu. That level of transparency is huge and makes the experience so much better. My son ordered a slider with fries from the kids' menu. It comes with just one slider, so I ordered a second, definitely the right call. He enjoyed it, and the fries were cooked well, just a little on the salty side for our taste (ketchup helped balance that out). I had the shrimp tacos. It's packed and perfect portion for lunch. The shrimp, pineapple slaw, and chipotle mayo was a nice mix. The restaurant was clean (including the bathrooms). The location is also a plus, super close to the Art Museum, which makes it a great stop before or after visiting. Overall enjoyable, and I'd come back, especially to try more of the menu and the drinks.
