I arrived a little early to meet a friend from the other side of the triangle and sat at the bar at 4:45 on a Saturday. I grabbed a Jalepeño Mango Margarita and read my email. (Great WiFi!) The interior is glass on two sides, so it very bright, and appointed with comfy chairs with waist-high dividers around the bar and small table area. My friend arrived at 5:15 as promised and we were escorted to a table further down the building. The bartender brought my bill to the table later, and I asked if it could be added to the total but he said no. I had read about the pimento cheese wontons, so we decided to try those as a starter. They arrived hot and dressed with a red pepper jelly sauce. (Not too hot, a nice foil to the pimento cheese!) My friend liked them as well. Neither of us are eating large meals these days, so we opted to share an entree. We decided on the NY Strip steak ($38) which comes with smoked potato au gratin and collard greens. We tried to sub the greens for anything else, and the only other option was Brussels sprouts. (Green beans? Broccoli? Asparagus? Anything else? Nope, just stinky stuff.) So, stinky veggies were the only option. (We asked the waiter not to bring them, but they arrived anyway, and we had someone remove them quickly!) The potato's turned out to be more a chunky soup, rather than a casserole, but were tasty. Just difficult to share. (No spoons were offered for the soup!) The steak was phenomenal. Cooked to perfection (rare/medium rare) with a nice finishing sauce, and was just enough. Somehow, that steak, the wonton app ($11) and a regular house marg were billed at $88 after tax, which meant over $100 with tip, but I was enjoying my friend's company too much to dispute the bill. After I left, I did the math and figure they charged extra for something in there. But I was gone and never take the receipt, because most waitstaff do a good job of putting info into the POS system. Maybe I need to reassess my trust of waitstaff data entry. Suffice it to say this will not be a regular spot I go to. Stinky veggies, poor data entry and sides that can't easily be shared made for a sour first impression. Eventually, a waitress showed up and apologized for the wait with a small teapot of hot water which she poured onto a hand towel. She brought water and took my order. I got the truffle cotija fries and an order of their smokehouse mac and cheese. The truffle cotija fries were good. The fries were crispy and well seasoned, with the salty cotija cheese contrasting well with the light drizzle of truffle oil. The smokehouse mac and cheese was a huge portion and extremely heavy. It had tender pulled pork, crispy fried onions, and a bit of BBQ sauce. I found the cheese sauce to be extremely creamy, but a little bland. It definitely could have used some more sharp cheese mixed into what i think was NC hoop cheese. It was an average experience. read more

Which overall, our experience was good although our waiter often disappeared and didn't stop by very often. For food, I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese, which was large and pretty decent. Could've used a smidge more seasoning but I enjoyed my meal overall. It's large enough that it could be split between two people. We also got the biscuits as an appetizer and I would say you can definitely pass on them. They tasted almost like an English muffin which is not my favorite. Now for the drinks, those were horrible and it's been awhile since I've had a really bad drink. My friend ordered the 'honey don't be sour' and I got a different one that was recommended by our waiter as it was popular and on the sweet side. Both were terrible, I mean like wow that's bad. I didn't drink it and just decided to drink water instead. My friend finished hers begrudging. Final rating is a 3.5. I went with the pork chop and swapped the collard greens for bacon Brussels sprouts, because after nearly nine years of living here, I still haven't fully acquired the "collard greens appreciation gene." Maybe one day. The portions were very generous, and the three mac 'n' cheese dishes were generous enough that those orderers needed to-go boxes. Meanwhile, the poke bowl and I cleaned our plates. No regrets there, my pork chop was perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. Our server, Indiana, was excellent, friendly, attentive, and happy to answer every question we had. Only downside? The restaurant was a bit warm inside. Not unbearable, just enough that we noticed. But that's a small thing compared to the great food, great service, and overall good vibes. Went for lunch on a Sunday and it was really busy! The parking was a little difficult, but it could have been because there was an arts fair going on nearby at the same time. I got a spot in the parking lot outside, but my friend had to park several blocks away. It definitely didn't taste made-from-scratch. The flavors just didn't come together for me: the sourdough was too sour, and the syrup had an overpowering bourbon flavor with barely any maple coming through. It all just felt out of balance. We were traveling through the area and did a little yelp research on places to eat. This one stood out to me with a unique menu. They have a beautiful inside area that could accommodate many different size parties. They also had a very nice outdoor patio with plenty of tables as well. My wife, family, and I recently visited Scratch Kitchen and Tap Room, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. We decided to try their new Korean marinated flank steak sandwich, and wow, it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. The flavors were perfectly balanced. The pickle had a unique, tangy flavor that complemented the rich steak beautifully. The bread was toasted just enough to add texture but still soft enough that it didn't scratch the roof of your mouth, a small detail, but one that makes a big difference. The Korean-style mayonnaise was phenomenal; I'm not entirely sure what's in it, but I'd love to find out because it brought everything together. The arugula added a fresh, peppery touch that really completed the sandwich. This was our first time visiting this particular location, but we've been to their sister restaurants, The Mason Jar and The Tap Station, and Scratch Kitchen holds its own with the same level of excellence. The service was top-notch, our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable about everything from the beer on tap to the house-made condiments. Even the ketchup was a premium Heinz variety, and the ranch dressing was made in-house and tasted fresh and flavorful. We also tried a couple of their burgers, including the barbecue burger, which were both excellent, but that Korean steak sandwich definitely stole the show. All in all, Scratch Kitchen and Tap Room delivered a five-star experience, from the food and service to the welcoming atmosphere. We'll definitely be back! read more

We were in downtown Cary and walked to this restaurant. The location is very nice and walkable. We each got a drink that both were okay; neither were a wow for us. I missed getting a picture but we got the pimento cheese wontons as an appetizer which were good; they weren't exactly what I was expecting on the shape of them and the crunch you get on a normal wonton wasn't there but the flavor was there. We got the Bacon Hoop Cheeseburger to split which was just okay; burgers are one my favorite foods and it just didn't hit that sweet spot of feeling satisfied. I did appreciate that the red onions were pickled though; it was a nice difference to the usual. We also felt rushed like the waiter wanted us to pay and get out as soon as possible so they could get the next group in; if I feel like I am cattle being herded, I am not going to feel like the overall experience was good. Amazing first experience at Scratch! A friend and I came for lunch on Black Friday. It was busy but we snagged two bar seats. It's beautifully decorated and much bigger inside than it seems. There's also patio seating for warmer days. Parking may be a tad tricky at peak times but they do have a shared lot with the place next door. There's also street parking and other downtown Cary lots nearby. My friend had one of the seasonal mocktails and added Apple Patron at the bartender's suggestion. Outstanding! For lunch I had the Pork Belly Tacos and a side salad. This was a huge portion for the price and for an app! You get 3 nice size tacos for $13. The pork belly had an amazing flavor and texture. My friend had the BLT and raved over it all day. She said it was the best she has ever had! I had a bite so I can vouch for such a tall statement. I loved the green tomato with the chopped bacon. It took maybe 10ish minutes for them to take our order, but food came out QUICK. The bartenders were very friendly and apologetic over the wait. I ordered the truffle mac & cheese burger with fries. The planters enclosing the tables need cleaned out of dead plants from last season. I had the special mango chicken w/ fried rice. A bit much combined. Either alone would be good, but too much sauce/flavors combined. Husband's fried chicken sandwich was good, but neither of us enjoyed the coleslaw. Amazing experience here! Annie, our server, was very efficient and attentive. They gave us complimentary Chex Mix that was alright, though the wasabi peas are my fave. This place is delicious! Came here for dinner while here for a work course. Not too busy at 6 pm on a Friday so we were able to get sat right away. Food was great. Dessert was to die for. Our server was good and attentive. Small parking lot and people parking on the street got tickets in certain areas so be careful about that. Would definitely come back again! read more

We had a good time at Scratch. I ordered the bibimbap bowl. It was $18, a seared rice bowl with steak, spinach, carrots, pickled red onions, cucumbers, and an over easy egg served with spicy bib sauce. The bowl itself was pretty good, and a beautiful presentation. The server was very busy as we had a party of 7, a lot of things (drinks, sauces, tableware, etc.) were forgotten.
