The food is okay. The last two times I went though, the woman at the front (who appeared to be the owner or manager) seemed so unfriendly and angry. We all have short staff issues but customer services is super important. This last time I was there I waited for my order but she put it in wrong. She told me she did and asked if I would take oysters instead. I hate oysters... if I wanted oyster then I would have ordered them. What I expected For $16.00 They gave me One (1)piece of Fish, Six (6) -Eight (8) Two(2) HushPuppies, ColeSlaw.... A child could of eaten that portion. Then Mr. Ed Bullard (Owner) said I couldn't get my money back because the food was made to order.... A waitress came & showed him what I received and I got an Ex-Tra piece of Fish. He broke the price down ... $10.95 for the plate $3.00 for Substitution & $2.95 or something for Taxes... When driving between Charleston and Savannah, this is a solid lunch stop. The highlight? Their creek shrimp - small, sweet and not too breaded. We also tried their seafood sampler with fried shrimp, flounder, scallops, etc. Everything was well cooked, but the hushpuppies were exceptionally wonderful. Crispy, sweet, not dry. I'd like to get more of those. Regarding COVID, I can understand the mixed reviews. When we walked in, one staff member wasn't wearing a mask or gloves, while another had a face shield. There is a big plexiglass at the front, so if you were to order takeout, you can go in and out easily, plus pickup from the drive thru window. However, yes, lots of patrons inside without masks, but pro mask and distancing signs throughout. So, take it as you will. read more

This was our second visit to the Ace Basin Fish Camp. The first visit to celebrate my uncle's birthday in September (had a group of 11) was very nice. Our waitress was very nice and attentive, and the food was good. Sooooo for my aunt's birthday, we decided to go back today (group of 9). Again, our waitress was very nice and very attentive BUT my aunt, the birthday girl, said she didn't like the taste of the crabcake. The waitress acknowledged it and told her that she would let the manager/owner know. First it took him over 15 minutes to come and when he came, she told him what the issue was and he pretty much waved her off with a "well, people come all the way from Charleston just for his crab cake" and walked off. We were stunned!! No apology, no offer of a replacement, NOTHING but a "who do you people think you are criticizing my food" attitude. We had been telling other people about the restaurant but will now be spreading the word in a different light and we won't be celebrating any more birthdays or anything else at this FISH CAMP! I'm so angry that he ruined her 85th birthday celebration. I'm sure he didn't feel that we were worthy of his attention even though our money is just as green as anyone else's or that our credit cards work fine even though they charge a credit card fee which stinks as well. Fried flounder was very good- and the prices are extremely reasonable. Lots of parking and service was fine. They aren't taking COVID seriously at all though. The manager was not wearing a mask the entire time we were there and the tables are fairly close to each other. We were pretty sketched out- especially because we were the only diners under the age of 60- and we know how COVID affects old people. Just unacceptable. Stopped in for lunch. Learned the family who owned the restaurant had a table of 13 just seated so the kitchen would be busier than usual. We ordered onion rings as an appetizer, expecting the delay for our main order. Received onion rings, but had to find someone to provide ketchup. Two other tables ordered food well after us (essentially what we ordered) and were finished with their food before we were served ours. We asked earlier for the wait person to check on our order, but the person didn't return to explain the order was not placed. While the wait person was asking another table how they were enjoying their meal, we asked her again about our meal, and learned it would be another 10 minutes. We then had to search out our check, and when paying, my wife spoke with the manager who knew about the fandango, and said, if your husband hadn't already paid the bill, I could have done something. Interesting local seafood restaurant. I depend on "yelp" for restaurants especially when not from the area. Based on the 5 star overall review and nothing else in the area we were adventurous and gave it a try. Besides it was 2pm and we were hungry. It is conveniently located right on the highway. Take note that it closes at 3pm on Sunday and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. So here is the scoop...crab cake sandwich ($9.95) was just okay. Fries not great as they were dried out and a bit over fried. We ate 1 each and left the rest. Not worth the calories. Shrimp po boy sandwich ($9.95) was good but the black vein in each shrimp is not something I like to see. The breading on the shrimp was light and delicious. Two hush puppies, small plastic cup of coleslaw and choice of fries or grits served with the lunch (lunch specials are not offered on Sundays). Grits tasted good but I have only had grits a handful of times so I really don't know any better on that. They were nice and hot which I liked. The place is no frills and no atmosphere. At the same time it is very clean and spotless. You can feel the pride put into the place. Server was slow to take our order as he spent more time sweeping up another table but food came out pretty fast. The people seem like hard working salt of the earth kinda people. Awesome to see a new place open up between Beaufort and Charleston. We have eaten at so many seafood joints in the South, but I have to say the Ace Basin Fish Camp stood out by leaps and bounds. I can't remember the last time I loved every component of my meal. The coleslaw was creamy, well seasoned with good crunch, the crinkle cut fries though frozen, had a clean potato flavor (only wish they were cooked a tad more for a crunchier bite), the perfectly sized one bite shrimp tasted like they jumped from the sea onto my plate. The breading was airy and light and did nothing to prevent the taste of the shrimp from coming through. Instead, it complemented it perfectly. The clam strips, I'm guessing were probably not breaded in house but it didn't matter as the flavor was on point even though the strips were small. Reminded me of my time living in New England where whole belly clams and strips are king. I've long given up on eating hush puppies mostly because the attempts made by restaurants to get creative with this Southern staple, never seem to work. Not here, the pups are the way they should be, soft in the center, crusty on the outside with a wonderful balance of corn flavor. No pimento, jalapeños, vegetables, or unnecessary additives. These are the real deal. My partner's fish sandwich was very well received. The filet overshadowed the bun, and that was a good thing. With all these fried components many restaurants don't take the necessary care to keep their oils separate and fresh. The Basin obviously takes its execution of its food seriously, as each item had a absolutely no after taste or hints of being fried with other foods. The service here had plenty of Southern charm and grace, the atmosphere was cute and homey. This will be our second go to place when we travel to and from Charleston. read more

Yeah, I've been living in California since '75, but I was born and raised in the Low Country on fresh Carolina shrimp. Which, obviously, don't exist in California, or pretty well anywhere else, for that matter. I was back in Walterboro for my dad's 95th birthday, and had noticed this place on the way from the airport the other night. Hmmm, I don't remember that being there before. So when dad said he wanted to go somewhere for fish tonight, I was happy I had seen it, as I knew Walterboro was slim pickings for seafood. Got here about 7 on a Saturday night and the place was packed; that's a good sign. Took a few minutes to get a table, but after that things went fairly quickly. I had fried shrimp and knew I was home! Lightly breaded and cooked to perfection; not overdone and chewy as one often gets when being served something that had been frozen and prepared by someone who doesn't know what they're doing (you know, any chain, or anyplace away from the coast) Dad had the flounder and was equally pleased, and is already planning his next visit. Portions were more than ample for the price; dad got the smaller order and was still pressed to clean his plate, but that didn't stop him. The only thing stopping me from giving a 5th star is that the food was served in baskets lined with a bit of paper. By the time one uses lemon, tartar sauce, etc. the paper is soggy and forks go right through it. It may well be that this is to help control costs, but I'd gladly pay a little more to avoid those baskets. Even paper plates would be acceptable. But either way, rest assured Ace Basin Fish Camp will be high on my go-to list whenever I'm in the area. read more

We stopped for lunch today coming from Edisto Beach on the way home to Columbia. What a gem of a find. Perfectly cooked light batter shrimp basket with creamy cole slaw, hush puppies, and grits. We had initially gone to EDISTO Beach for lunch after having been in Charleston earlier. I had several places in mind. Some were closed on Monday & others only served dinner. At any rate, on this particular day there were intermittent power outages on the beach & the restaurant we had stopped at & waited for an hour to be given menus & I had gone to the bar for 2 beers, we left & returned to Jacksonboro. To be fair they'd had an hour power outage & were to resume at 2:00 so it was chaotic at best. We walked in & were greeted & a waiter was at our table before I returned from the rest room . We arrived at 330 & their dinner menu was in effect. Our food was amazingly quick AND very delicious. I had their combination seafood platter & my husband had oysters. Everything was excellent! This is a very good Seafood Restaurant. On my first visit I ordered the Shrimp and Scallops combo. It came with a couple of hush puppies and, from the sides, I chose fries and slaw. I noticed that one of the sides is a baked potato so I may try that next trip. Oh, and yes there will be a next trip, probably tomorrow. Everything was cooked perfectly. The batter on the shrimp and scallops was crispy and light and golden brown. Just how I like it. The entire staff there was nice and friendly too.
