We were greeted as we walked in and seated immediately. The interior is a little dated, and could use a little TLC. Our server was Chuck and he was great and gave great recommendations. I had the 10 piece shrimp with flounder and chose the fried potatoes and coleslaw as my sides. My husband had the twenty piece shrimp meal with fried okra and red rice. The food was delicious except my husband did not like the rice. He said it needed more seasoning. The only other negative is our server did not refill our drinks. We've driven by numerous times, then we saw the shrimp plate special on a site on Facebook and we finally decided to stop in and try it out. The restaurant is definitely old & very dated inside. But I've been to some places like this and they've rocked my world. Listen up all you "Johnny come Lately" yelp reviewers with your ridiculous expectations of a tried and true local restaurant. I know not many people are actually from here anymore, so it comes as no surprise that a lot of people don't understand this place. This is an actual local restaurant with local connections to Charleston. There's no brand new "Native" stickers or disgusting Ohio modified Palmetto Trees on the windows. It's a real Charleston treasure. I've been going to Easterby's for over 30 years since it was on James Island. I'm not sure how you did it up north, but from the bottom of my heart, I don't care. Is Easterby's an upscale 5 star restaurant serving caviar and fine wine? No..... Quit acting like it's supposed to be! It's exactly what it should be and what its always been. Easterby's is good food, laid back local atmosphere, and great prices. I'm sorry if you spilled cocktail sauce on your bowtie or don't like the size of the plates they serve food on. Give me a break. Scallops...hard pass. Creepy little things. All exactly the same size, no texture no taste- definately frozen and maybe not even scallop. Think of like a scallop nugget. Shocking really. Got about 10 f which were cold, a couple of hush puppies..also cold. About $14 person. Listen, you wanna like it but between the dingy decor and food, its not worth your money these days. We never once had to ask for refills because if Chuck didn't get us one, there was another server who also helped us get our refills. Spoiler alert - no one if our party ordered fried seafood so maybe that was our problem. We always root for a local business and this we seems be a long-standing one; unfortunately, however, our recent experience there was not great. The restaurant was not busy at all yet service was super slow and we had to seek servers multiple times to ask questions and request items, simple items like a tea refill. Three people in our group ordered grilled seafood which was overcooked. Another person in our group ordered a chef salad which was soggy and not very tasty. Even when we tried to overlook the fried food smell that permeated our clothes, there was not much to merit a return visit to this restaurant. Had some great fried shrimp here for lunch today, and even better fried okra. They both were so fresh and cooked perfectly. We had the 20-piece fried shrimp with two sides for $12.95. I wish I had taken a picture of it but I just dove in instead. I hadn't been here in many years and wasn't so sure about trying it again after so long. It's like stepping back in time and it was fun. The only two negative things were that the hush puppies were pretty rubbery, so maybe they were microwaved, and the table was extremely sticky. I still can't wait to go back though. I'll suffer through the stickiness to get to the shrimp and okra again. read more

It makes me sad to say this, as I have been a regular customer of Easterby's for many, many years, Bottom line: if they don't start making some improvements, they will be out of business, probably before the year is out. I've always liked their food and their prices are very reasonable. The quality of the food used to be great. Not any longer. Their ribeye "special" is a 10 oz piece of gristle. We've tried it in the past and it was awful. Knowing that their food is usually good, we thought it was a one-off, but yesterday my husband tried it again and it was terrible. Just looking at it I could see it was very, very low quality meat. They guy at the next table felt the same; he sent his back. This is not what I've come to expect from them through the years. It's become run down and unattractive. They have decades old pictures of golfers and mounted fish all over the place. It's like a shrine to the owners' hobbies rather than trying to create an appealing atmosphere for diners. I could live with all of that, but they have not upgraded their air conditioning in years. We learned long ago to not go there during summer because it is so hot and uncomfortable. It's a shame--it doesn't have go be this way. The dishes that they do well, they do very well. But I am afraid to try anything other than the few tried and true dishes that I have had a million times before because I cannot trust that the "new" dishes will be good. I hope the owners take this to heart and do something to bring this place up to date and have consistently prepared food. I mean, it is hard to screw up a salad, but they managed to do that just yesterday. It's unfair to their servers, as well. They are all pleasant and do their jobs well. No question they are losing income because of the inconsistencies coming out of the kitchen. We want Easterby's to succeed! Be responsible business owners and do what is needed to keep up with the times! Update your space, train your kitchen staff, and please!-stop buying the lowest possible quality meat and offer it as a "special." There is nothing special about it. Two stars for good service... Against my better judgement, and the review, I thought maybe this visit will be better than the everyone else. Short story review: This is when your coworker tells you about this amazing drink call La Croix that you absolutely must try, and then you do... (I know some of you love LC, but to me, it is what is left over when soda and flavor get a divorce). Until there are severe changes, I will probably never return. Which sucks when you live within a half mile and can easily walk here. Long story review: They bring you hushpuppies to your table. They aren't too bad, but not the best in the world, but very sweet. Ordered a chicken tenders kids meal with fries. There was no seasoning whatsoever on the fries or the tenders... nothing but the taste of grease soaked fries. Even though they are steak fries, they could make them a LOT crispier... That being said, almost everything ordered was soaking in grease. Got the bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp...which really is shrimp stuffed in bacon, because there is no seafood stuffing stuffed in/with the shrimp. It was soaked with grease and just dripping, the bacon tasted "old" and bland...like how does THAT happen? We ordered a steak special and a fish and shrimp (grilled/blackened) platter. The steak was a 10oz rib eye, with fried okra and grilled mushrooms, the seafood came with steak fries and grilled mushrooms. Of everything the mushrooms was the only thing that had any real flavor. The seafood was ok, the okra over fried, with what tasted like old grease, which is why everything was probably soaked in it. THE STEAK WAS HORRIBLE It tasted like it was frozen and microwaved or boiled thawed, and even though was med rare, it was are rubbery and grainy that i could not even continue to chew once it was in my mouth. Three chomps and I spit it out. We were done. I hate to see places like this. They say family owned, and they probably have a lot of regulars, but I think they come more for the familiar atmosphere and not the food. Which means that when this place is doing well, the servers are great making great tips. When the food is atrocious like it was when i went there, this means high turnover, because the kitchen will NOT keep customers coming. AMBIANCE: From the outside, Easterby's is unassuming and quaint. The only huge issue is that the parking lot is a weird place to be. the parking arrangement looks good until you have to actually park in the lot during a busy time. On the inside, it is also a little confusing because there is an entrance inside of the entrance. The old light fixtures, wood paneling, dated floor tiles and dingy ceiling tiles leave a dated and dirty feel, especially with the windows closed. Could be refreshed with minor and incremental tweaks. MENU The challenge is that the menu itself isn't bad. The items you expect and good prices, the problem is the food. FOOD. FIRE THE COOK(S). They are costing you money. Find someone who enjoys being in the kitchen and takes pride in what leaves the kitchen. Also, it is ok to have more than one size plate. To use a full sized plate to serve a 5 shrimp appetizer, makes it well, unappetizing. Especially when there is no garnishment, no sauces, or anything to go with it. Try different sized plates that help to make the food look better. Also Easterby's is advertised as a family establishment, making me think that its going to be a home cooked meal. As such, I think that there should be something unique to Easterby's that you can't get anywhere in West Ashley, whether it be sauces, seasonings, or even a dessert. At the end of the day, I blame management. There has to be quality control somewhere. This starts with the leadership. The manager or family needs to care about the customer again. Revisit the menu, come up with some fresh ideas and recipes. Making your own breads/rolls for tables and burgers, along with making your own burger patties, might increase quality while lowering food costs. To minimize frozen steaks, why not have a steak night instead, or have it on the menu as a weekend special and not an everyday item. While this place has been around a long time, I will be surprised if it is in business 3 years from now if it doesn't change its operations. LD Ps. The four of us stopped at Easterby's after touring nearly Magnolia Plantation. I had picked it out by sight and it was exactly as I was expecting - locally owned and unpretentious with good food. Like many Charleston seafood restaurants, this one has plenty of fried seafood items on the menu but it also has the option to get any of them grilled. My wife and I have eaten here several times and never had bad food or service. My wife gets the 20 shrimp and I have the sausage shrimp and red rice. I also add Texas Pete for an added kick. People have complained about the steak, REALLY, at a seafood restaurant. Go to Texas Roadhouse if you want a steak and If you order seafood don't complain about it. Remember you are at a steak house not a seafood restaurant. Another complained about food being greasy, they need to go to Gilligan's on Ladson Road if they want to complain about greasy food cooked in old grease. One complained about a dog in the restaurant, probably a service dog, however they need to go to Paris France where every table will have a dog by it. After eating there they need to watch where they step on the sidewalk or their shoes will stink. I think these people that do all of the complaining are looking for a free meal and don't get one. They also think Ramen Noodles are gourmet food so they should stay at home and enjoy them. If they went to the White House they would probably complain about the food and service as well. By the we drive from Summerville to get here which takes about 30-45 minutes to get here when we could stay in Summerville and dine out. read more
