It's such a pleasure to shop in a beautifully thought out hardware store where everything is displayed neatly and organized so well. Then you have their legendary "Customer Service" every time you need anything. You can keep the GIANT home improvement stores and their self checkout lanes, That's when I said, uh, NO THANKS to Home Depot & Lowe's!!! The best hardware store in the Western Hemisphere! The store's layout is very easy to maneuver and well marked to find items on your own. BUT, the best part of True Value Palm Springs is the extremely knowledgeable staff that can answer virtually any technical question regarding hardware issues. Unlike Home Depot or Lowes, you are never misdirected to the wrong place in the store, multiple times, by multiple people and then them given a blank stare by an employee who doesn't know what a certain part does. This store's stuff and customer service is pretty awsome. It's not cheap but have found perfect patio stuff for my situation there and only there. Only problem is you find something perfect, then 10 months later you find something more perfect, and want to exchange. The amazing thing is they actually did it for me once. I brought in 2 patio chairs I bought there 10 MONTHS earlier and wanted to exchange them for a new set in the showroom if they'd give me half price for the old ones. The manager actually walked out to the car with me and took a look at their condition, after a little protestation, lol, and said "It's your lucky day", and gave me FULL PRICE for the old chairs (I had hosed them off and they were good as new). Have been in here a number of times over the past few years. Usually have had good service and accurate information. The last time a few weeks ago was pretty bad. I've been trying to purchase a replacement pole for a pool umbrella. Initially I was told that they would check with the manager and took my name a phone number. After two weeks went back and asked again. Spoke with original salesman who could hardly remember the conversation. Another basically dismissed me because he was more interested in flirting with other shoppers. Finally spoke with the manager who did seem to know what he was talking about. Again took name and phone number and said he would call the next day with the information. Two days later went back to the store only to be told that he was not in until the end of the week. As of today, still no call or follow-up. Experiences like this are generally why people dislike the big box stores. While they have a unique selection of merchandise, there are other options in Palm Springs. The most positive thing I can still say, is that it's usually easy to get in and out of the store quickly with a friendly smile from the checker. read more

CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE We really like these guys because they are very service oriented -- every time we go, several people ask what they can do to help. It's a much better experience than going to one of the Big Box hardware stores. They are also great at paint matching -- they'll take a chip of whatever color you need and analyze it and hand you the finished paint maybe a half hour later. They don't have lumber or a nursery but what they have is a great staff. It's also incredibly convenient and they stock a lot of fun, offbeat merchandise which is great as gifts or for spicing up a party. Cashiers are super friendly and they have gone out of their way to help us repair or replace the outdoor furniture we bought here ten years ago. And the rewards cards are amazing -- they show up a few times a year and are some really good discounts. On my birthday, they gave me a BBQ set. It's always fun to go here -- they have a great buyer so it's not the usual stuff. read more

**This is an update to my earlier review which I have left below for reference.** I have to say, that after my initial review I wasn't expecting too much in the way of changes or even a response but I have been pleasantly surprised. I was recently approached by the store manager while shopping in the store. I guess he recognized me from the profile picture. I go into the store regularly so I can understand why they would recognize me. The manager wanted to offer a personal apology and even thanked me for my frank review and critique. He seemed genuinely concerned about the experience I have in the store and I believe that he (and his crew by association) do care about the experience all their customers have in the store. He assured me that he has been working diligently to improve the front end and I have seen vast improvements myself. If you live in Palm Springs then you'll want to visit this True Value gem right in tow. It is always good to support local businesses first and who would want to battle the traffic out to the big box stores anyway. They have most anything you would need to get at the big box and even more. No reason to go anywhere else. Thanks to everyone at True Value Palm Springs! ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have to say, I have a true love/hate relationship with this store. I have been in customer service of one sort or another my entire working life. While many might think that would make me hard to please...it is actually the opposite. I am VERY forgiving of less than good customer service. I am the first to notice when an employee is overworked and under appreciated (under supported) by management. I would also be the first to an employee's aid if they were being mistreated by a rude customer, but that is not usually the case here. This store is stocked with some of the best stuff and they have fair prices for the most part. I find that they have more than enough people working in the store. I am usually asked if I need help finding anything within 10 seconds of being in the store. This is impressive and I find it to be consistent in this store. I find that the employees working in the aisles are more than willing to help and are very knowledgeable about the products they are selling. Kudos to the aisle staff, but my compliant is with the front end staff, the cashiers. Almost always I feel unwelcome by the cashiers, or even as if I am bothering them to pay them for the merchandise I am buying. This is not a one time occurrence. I am usually in the store 3 times per week and would always rather do business here than at Home Depot or the like. I cannot remember once a cashier saying hello or having one call me over to their register. It is amazing to me! There can be 3 cashiers and if I come up to the cash registers and one has a customer and the other 2 are available, they will let me stand there looking in to the air, all the while chatting with one another and ignoring me. I literally have to walk up in front of them and ask if they are open. They usually will say "sure" after they finish their conversation with the other cashier. On numerous times, I have walked up to the cashier only to hear them talking bad about other customers, I have actually heard them say that their customers are stupid and have no clue! After begrudgingly ringing up my sale, I can hardly get a thank you out of any of them. It is ridiculous, and it is the same cashiers all the time. The situation is almost enough for me to go elsewhere, but I just love the store otherwise. It is such a shame they can't treat their customers with a little more respect. Such a shame! read more

The Absolutely BEST Customer Service anywhere. I have been a Loew's fan for years after suffering through Home Depot's poorly trained staff for too long. Living in Palm Springs, I was pleasantly surprised to find True Value Hardware in Smoke Tree. If you forget about heavy contractor supplies and want a great selection of EVERYTHING else, this is the place for your residential needs. And the Staff, OMG. Very poor customer service. I ordered a Budha head and stand I was informed 4-6 weeks . Six weeks later no stand and was informed that they only order in Bulk and did not know when it would be in. Went in today to redeem points and had over 2500 K was told oh you can't redeem them for anything you just collect points. Really stupid sales assistants. read more

After 10+ years and two locations, I truly have never had exceptional service in this store. I think a lot of people are blinded by it being the "in" or "hip" gay hardware store to shop at. I have found good service people every so often but it virtually takes sirens to get anyone to help when I need it. I love the ridiculous ad about how great the prices are. Are you kidding me? This posturing is like religious brainwashing. I absolutely don't mind paying a higher price for the convenience and the ease but I would shop more often if I was actually greeted or asked if I needed help consistently, instead of feeling like I'm shunned when I walk-in. read more

My last experience here I was looking for hosing and elbows. Not a big dollar project. I happened to see two employees and asked both for help. "Big John" walked over quickly and helped me to decide which one of the group of hoses (I was pretty clueless) was best for my needs. Then when my hands started to get kinda full he said, "One moment" and 10 seconds later had a basket in hand for me. After this he walked me over to where the elbows were and helped to select the best one while explaining why it would work for my application. Went here to pick up several things, and had a coupon for two free keys on my phone. Showed the coupon to the key making guy and he verified that the coupon was good before he started making keys. Got to the checkout counter with my purchases and the keys and the coupon. An older, very unpleasant woman behind the counter said i had to have a printed version of the coupon. I said there is nothing on the coupon that says i needed to print it, that i'd already verified with the key making guy that it was good before i had the keys made, and that most businesses accept coupons on phones or state that you must print it to redeem. Nothing doing. She basically said go F&@! yourself. I can't imagine their return policy when they don't honor their obligations on purchases and coupons. Don't go here!!! read more
