The food here is simple and as good as anywhere else: possibly even better. I had the sausage omelette with Swiss cheese and rye toast with coffee. The omelette was loaded with sausage and there was absolutely no grease anywhere. Very yummy! The coffee is served very hot so watch your tounge. Place is loaded with regulars and no wait Monday mornings. Service is spectacular for both newbies and regulars. Did I mention my toast was prepared perfectly to my specifications. Wholeheartedly I agree with all the positive comments. Bathrooms are down a narrow stairway in the basement. Being disabled and unable to climb those stairs, I have to 'plan ahead' before my weekly visits. Heads up for any of you on canes: there's uneven pavement and other minor obstacles outside the front door if you dont look down going in! Once in, its great. I've been coming to Achilles for most of my adult life and it never disappoints. The best chicken Greek salad in Ann Arbor. The chicken is always fresh, perfectly cooked and seasoned perfectly. They give you an entire bottle of homemade dressing to control how much you want to put on your salad. The authentic olives have pits which I love! They add a fresh slice of green pepper and perfectly grilled pita bread. The atmosphere is warm, homey and clean. The service is fast and waitresses are nice. The prices are very affordable. Dive diner, but not in a good way. The overwhelming smell of chemicals hit me as I walked in. Can't believe you can charge someone $6.99 for a small salad that probably cost them $1 in food cost. Banana peppers instead of pepperoncini peppers, almost frozen tomatoes, beats with no taste and this sweet creamy dressing? no thank you And then the lemon chicken rice soup which tasted like a can of creamy chicken soup. I have been on a breakfast kick at work lately and ordered the raisin french toast and the country fried steak from here. The country fried steak seasoning itself was out of this world. I loved every bite of it. The gravy that came on it was a little bland, but after some pepper and getting rid of some of the excess it was alright. The french toast was also pretty solid. I highly recommend Achilles. I ordered the Southern Omelette with bacon. I always order this type of omelette when I experience a restaurant for the first time. The hash browns came inside the omelette and were perfectly cooked. This was easily one of the best omelettes I have had in the Ann Arbor area! I think I chose the wrong thing to eat but I personally had a poor experience compared to other reviews. The prices here are your typical diner fare and the breakfast and lunch options seem good. My chicken strip dinner was less than satisfactory. The strips were small and the temperatures were not well maintained - the BBQ sauce was too chilled and the soup was scalding hot. Additionally, I had to remind the waitstaff of my bread basket which came out chilled as well. In addition, the service was not the greatest - the waitress seemed to be in a rush to get off her shift and was not the most attentive. She also seemed a bit pushy to get our orders. I might give this place a second chance as there are not many diner options around and the prices are reasonable - but I didn't have a good first experience. read more

This is a cute little restaurant. It offers the usual diner fare like tuna melts and breakfast all day, as well as a few Greek specialties. The decor is diner kitsch, with posters of James Dean, the Statue of Liberty or jukeboxes on the walls. On the warm but overcast summer day I was there, they had the windows open instead of running the air conditioning. The temperature was fine, but the wind was blowing in just the wrong direction so that some of the smell from the smoking side was wafting over to the non-smoking side. I ordered a veggie gyro, which was really just a veggie pita wrap sandwich. Depending on what the ingredients for the flatbread are, this could be a completely vegan meal, as it was just a mix of sauteed vegetables along with fresh tomato and lettuce wrapped in a round of soft, fluffy flatbread. There was a really thick, creamy tzadziki on the side, and the sandwich was very satisfying. By itself, I could have eaten a meal, including tip, for around $5. However, I got it as a combo meal, with fries, a mini Greek salad, and a soda pop. The fries were nothing special; they were good, though a few were a little limp and undercooked. The mini Greek salad was really good, with generous chunks of feta cheese, really fresh-tasting kalamata olives, and perfectly ripe red tomatoes. I thought it was odd that they used what seemed like a bag mix of lettuce with red cabbage and carrots, instead of just using romaine. However, it didn't detract from the salad, and the Greek dressing that came on the side was good and obviously made in-house. Unfortunately, the soda was flat, and when I sent it back, the second glass was equally flat. However, the waitress was apologetic about it, and, by the third try, they'd changed their CO2 canister, and I finally got a fizzy diet Coke. They have really good breakfast deals here, as low as $2.49 on weekdays before 11 a.m., and I may have to go back to sample their breakfasts some time. read more

We have been dining at Achilles Restaurant for 20+ years. Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner on each and every visit their food is consistently delicious. They have wonderful Greek specialties like spanakopita, avgolemono soup and omelettes. The Southern and Greek omelettes are our favorites and they will custom make your dish to your specifications. Stavros is an outstanding cook, the food is always prepared hot, fresh and fast. The restaurant interior was recently repainted and is clean as can be. Just know that it is an older building and the bathrooms are located in the basement so if you can't do stairs make sure you plan accordingly. When my son was ill in the hospital he didn't eat for five days. The first thing he wanted was avgolemono soup from Achilles. True comfort food. Yes, it's that good. read more

This is a great local diner in the Ann Arbor / Ypsi area. I've been here a few times, and I typically get the traditional breakfast of either scrambled something or other, or a combo of sausage + eggs, always with coffee on the side. I'm easy to please, I like eggs for breakfast (scrambled, sunny side, etc; doesn't matter as long as its not overcooked or dry I'm happy as pie). Living close by, I had lunch with a friend who wanted breakfast for lunch. Fair enough. We headed to our local Greek Coney, the Achilles. Named after a mythological Greek warrior with an invisible flaw, this cozy, local diner offers fast friendly service and the predictable smorgasboard menu: one dominant resident ethnic section (in this case, Greek-- brush up on your Greek listening into the kitchen), one nod to another cusine (Mexican) and then the usual grill fare. Great coffee started the process. Figuring that the real Coney Island would be closer than Athens, I ordered their Super Coney with fries and slaw. Wow. It came as expected: fork and knife affair. A Dearborn Sausage Company product lie smothered in a cumin tinged beef and bean slurry with the obligatory freshly chopped onions and mustard zig zag atop it all. Coated crispy fries and a slightly sweet industrial slaw completed the show. All great. Now on to the Achilles heel. Their bathroom hides in the basement down a stairway with an unusual length tread step. Folks with balance issues need to be super careful. The handrail is firmly attached, yet the slight length of the step itself could trip an unmindful diner. Knock one star off for the steps. Kudos though for a smooth and graded entryway: perfect for those with walking situations. Will I be back? Yes! Or as one would hear in Athens, "nai." read more

My one friend and I call this place "Old reliable". I honestly drove by here for many years and never had the desire to stop in. I'm glad I did. Their fresh OJ is to die for. all of the home made greek dishes are outstanding (including the lemon rice soup from scratch) I personally love the giant meat grape leaves. The raisin toast is worth the upcharge and the french toast is excellent. I often order the chicken kabob. I won't mark them down for a preference, but I don't order the omelets because they are sometimes undercooked - they make up for it with the grape leaves and lemon rice! The corned beef hash is out of a can - again not something I would mark down for on it's own...but good to know. staff is friendly and attentive, and doesn't frown on just squeezing in with enough time to eat before they close. read more

Achilles is probably the breakfast place we most often visit, mostly due to geography (it's less than a mile from my house). Their breakfast is pretty good, pretty cheap, pretty big portions -- it's your typical coney. For breakfast I recommend the french toast -- it's a cut above most coneys' french toast. I will complain (a little bit) because they don't have waffles... if they offered waffles I would give them a 4 stars. The lunch/dinner menu is good too -- I got a nicely sized Reuben, chicken gyro and coney, all of which were reasonably priced and tasty. We got the corned beef special on St. Patty's day once, though, and it was really the corned beef they used on their sandwiches, just heated up (served with cabbage and potatoes too, of course). I can't REALLY complain because it was only $4.95, but there you go, that's the kind of thing that makes it a three star establishment. Although definitely at least a SOLID three stars. read more

Great diner (I believe Michiganders call them 'coneys'). I've only had breakfast here -- but I've been at least a dozen times. The waitresses are really nice; they always come by and refill your coffee (essential in a breakfast!). It certainly isn't fancy food, but it's tasty, cheap, and fast. I usually order either the Farmers Omelette (potatoes, cheese, ham, and more!) or the breakfast sandwich with sausage. I'd recommend either. Poorest customer service I've just about ever experienced! I called to rectify my order that was incorrect and received only attitude, blame deflecting, and ultimately was hung up on! I told them I didn't care who's fault it was, I just wanted a solution. Even asked why I was receiving attitude. When I asked to speak to the manager I heard him in the back say no!!! When it was clear that they didn't give a crap I said that I was going to speak to this on yelp. The women said "we have a big enough customer base, I think we'll be ok." and HUNG UP!!! As I explored my neighborhood's variety of businesses, I continued to eye up Achilles. I had eaten here once before, when a different owner ran this place. At the time, I was lured in by the kitchy wall art and the vaguely European music coming from the kitchen. Unfortunately, my wife and I were waited on by an overwhelmed 13 year old girl, and judging by the huge lengths between table visits I have to assume she was also making the meals and perhaps writing a book at the same time. We didn't go back. Last summer I noticed the sign on the outside read that new owners had taken over, but it took me over a year to eat here. Upon my recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised by this charming, albeit unspectacular diner. It was clean, the service was good, and the food was perfectly acceptable. I had a yummy Italian omelet, which was filled with onion, green peppers, cheese, and ground beef, then topped with a spaghetti-style meat sauce. My wife also enjoyed an omelet, and we both had some great fried potatos with our meals. The coffee was fresh, they served real orange juice, and the timing was pretty solid. This restaurant was also pretty baby friendly. It appeared to be non-smoking (although Sarah R.'s review does reference a smoking section) and the waitresses were pretty cool about our infant child hanging about, threatening to explode into a fuss at any second. Oh yeah, and it was very fairly priced, we both ate big breakfasts for a little under $20. The restaurant really didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but it was a really solid family style diner. No complaints, no true raves, but I'd easily recommend Achilles. read more

On my way out, one young woman mentioned that all of the Greek dishes at Achilles are house-made. So I had to go back right away to try them. It was top notch! I tried the combo plate with pastistio, spinach pie and stuffed grape leaf with lemon sauce. And another Greek salad. For $7.50, a hearty lunch indeed and I ended up taking some home. I was never really impressed with Achilles any time I have gone there and I am really surprised at all the positive reviews. I found my meal to be overpriced compared to other coney styles restaurants (I would not call this a Greek restaurant). The dinners are mediocre at best. The service, at least the times I have gone, had also been lacking. My coffee or soda would never be filled and the waitress was usually cold and not very friendly. This is not a horrible place, but there are other much better diner options out there in Ann Arbor. read more

I came expecting a typical greasy spoon comet island experience for breakfast. I was pleasently surprised that my coffee wasn't gross, the staff was friendly and accomodating, and my omlete was not too greasy. I ordered a spinach omlete and although there was too much cheese per usual with greasy spoons I overall enjoyed it. I'm sure they used frozen spinach but it wasn't gross like some spinach omletes I've had other places. I enjoyed this place more than Leo's on carpenter. It was smaller and felt more like a family/community run place. I was also surprised how clean it seemed for a greasy spoon. NOT the best place I've been, but it met my expectations. read more

This is a small Coney Island that serves some great Greek food. You can tell a lot about a place by their coffee. If they cannot make simple coffee how can they cook food properly. We've been looking for a "go-to" place since moving to Ypsilanti this past June and Achilles could easily be it. Definitely not a coney joint with a greasy spoon mentality--this place has a huge menu so you can get just about anything from a club sandwich to a coney dog to pastitsio. My gal and I both ordered from the Greek side of the menu and everything was outstanding: the pastitisio, grape leaves, spinach pie, and gyro we're all killer. This is definitely a place where the word "homemade" on the menu isn't just a buzzword. The service was also excellent, and as one reviewer put it, this place could easily become our "old reliable."
