It has a cinnamon sugar on it but the type of bread is not something we recognized. Scrambled eggs and bacon were great. Frank's is old school. They have been around forever, essentially. (I grew up just past north campus, circa 1980s, when it was half cornfields still, and I attended University of Michigan for a professional degree.) They are the quintessential diner in the perfect college town. I would estimate I've eaten there ten times since, say, 1988. The decor exudes the Go Blue spirit. They also have retro knick knacks: a photo of the Three Stooges in cap and gown, saying "Now what?," a vintage Mountain Dew advertising sign, a Scooby Doo mystery van toy model, etc. But if I gave been there for anything other than breakfast, I have forgotten that. So I associate the place with traditional American fare prepared on a griddle, before you start the workday (or classes). This weekend, my wife and I are passing through town. Last night, she said, where should we eat in the morning. I gave her a few choices. She said, oh, Frank's of course. We had a stranger take a photo of us outside, for old time's sake. I had corned beef hash, two eggs, hash browns, and toast. My wife had pancakes. Both our dishes were large enough for us to request boxes and a bag. We are set for tomorrow. The corned beef was how I like it: it is not some fancy homemade preparation, but the type out of a can, fried up (I would bet it is in fact homemade, but in the style of out of a can, which is even better). The pancakes are exactly as you would imagine if you grew up in the States and have ever eaten at this type of establishment. We noticed they have specialty versions, such as with peanut butter. The patrons are a mix. One table was blue collar rank and file, talking about their union and ensuring folks don't steal their jobs. Another table was four college guys, and of the different backgrounds you would hope (I would anyway) come together as equals on a campus, including white, black, and Asian American. The server was friendly, someone who either loves their job or does such a good job presenting that attitude you want to leave a good tip; the chef also was outgoing. Felt like home! Really loved this place. It is a total dive, which adds a lot to the charm of the place. The food was great, served while hot and plenty of food for the price. Everyone's meal was prepared correctly. The service was good and our waitress was very nice and efficient. We all got different meals. I was seeking a proper Chicago dog. Frank's is close, but not quite right. No Vienna beef dog. Seemed to be a garden variety dog. Little snap to the casing. Down on flavor. Also missing the poppyseed bun. I did like the NY dog. The sauerkraut was sufficiently sauer. Yay! Swift and attentive service. Good sanitation. Oddly quiet for a weekday lunchtime. Will I return? Let me start by saying that the waitress was decent and this rating should not reflect her work ethic. I came here before the University of Michigan game to get some breakfast because I would have 2.5 hours before kickoff (plenty if time to kill before the game) we waited about 10min to get a seat which was ok because it was pretty crowded and the line was out the door. I never have high expectations for hole in the walls so some of the things I could accept as long as the food is good. But when you walk in it smelled like the rag from cleaning the tables. Normally one would rinse it out or change it out. Now for the service.. Bless our waitress because she was decent for handling THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT's Orders. Yes you read that right. There was only one other person helping out with getting the drink orders...which is not a tall task. By her handling such a big work load, we ended up waiting about 20min just to order the food and another 35min to actually get our food. So let's see... 10min waiting for a seat... 20min to order food... and another 35min to wait for our food to come.. 1hr and 5min total before we get to our food. Yea no bueno..at all. And I wanted to excuse it because she was the only one but as a good manager would have someone else helping her get the people in and out. That's actual money/time you are losing. As for the food... I will give it a 3 because my food was prepared correct, but as far as everyone at my table theirs was not. The toast was slightly burnt, they asked for over hard eggs..they came out over easy. However, it never seems to be crowded or have a line forming outside like some other restaurants. Which is surprising, because Frank's probably gives you the most bang for your buck. They don't have fancy breakfasts like eggs benedict or lox bagels, but they do have great classics like french toast, omelettes, and pancakes. Have wanted to eat here for a long time, but have to say I wasn't missing much. Had a mid-morning breakfast yesterday, mushroom-swiss omelette & coffee. Coffee was weak, skunky tasting, and even though the place was almost empty, the counter guy didn't make it back for a refill until the omelette came. The omelette didn't seem so much like an omelette as a pile of sloppily folded scrambled eggs, and halfway through its cooking the cook took a phone call in the back room and stayed back there yakking while my omelette browned away. He finally excused himself to come back and finish my omelette, though it was a bit rubbery by then. At least it didn't dry out, thanks to the griddle being a lake of grease. If you want classic diner ambiance, this is your place. If you want a decent cup of coffee and a well-made omelette, go almost anywhere else. read more

I don't love Frank's, but I'll go without complaint if my friends pick it as our weekend brunch spot. It's a pretty typical diner with breakfast options such as omelettes, pancakes, and French toast. I don't mind going because the prices are more than fair, and the food is decent. I wasn't crazy about the corned beef hash that I got the first time I visited, but I like the omelettes. I had the best French toast of my life here. I love a good diner, and this place delivered. I ordered the two eggs and half order of French toast special and added a side order of hash browns. I wish I hadn't because I felt terrible leaving all of that food behind. The portions were huge! Three big triangles of French toast (for a *half* order) and the hash browns were easily three servings. Good lord! The eggs and hash browns didn't have much seasoning, and I feel like a little salt can go a long way. But I've come to learn that this is the norm in the north. The coffee was really good and stayed full thanks to the two awesome waitresses there. But that French toast. I'll be dreaming of that shhh, dude. I don't normally like French toast on a weekday morning, it's pretty heavy and sweet before work. But so many reviews mentioned it that I had to try it. Try it. Seriously. It's phenomenal. The food was only surpassed by the service. Two ladies served me throughout the meal and both were super sweet and pleasant. Kept my coffee full, but asked before pouring more. I hate when I get my coffee juuust right and then a server comes and tops it off without asking. Not a problem here, thankfully. The place isn't spectacular or noteworthy as far as looks. It is a shame that Michigan's campus has two diners in walking distance, but Frank's makes up for the absence of gruff, greasy diner food on Central Campus. It is usually peaceful on the weekdays, but on the weekends, this is campus' favorite hangover cure. Nothing here is to write home about, but it gets the job done when you crave some fries slathered in grease, a good farmer's omelet, or the two eggs any style with a side of hash which has cured the most deathly Saturday and Sunday mornings. The decor seems like it's been there since they opened, but that's part of the charm. As for the food, it's diner food; hot, decent size portions, but average. The food options are standard and a menu is not required except for the most inept and indecisive customers. The chefs are average, everyday, normal guys sporting shirts marked with the names of local roofing companies and other blue collar businesses comprising the lifeblood of this great nation - the type of guys you would see at a tailgate. The wait staff members know you are hungry and accordingly do not inundate you with platitudes or vapid political opinions encountered at surrounding establishments. Perhaps most refreshing, they do not come out of the restaurant door in full face masks while swinging around thermometers and waivers and talking down to you like you are an infected zombie. We found in Frank's the breakfast place we've been longing for since leaving Champaign in 2007. Don't get me wrong - I love me some fancy brunch. I love foofy champagne drinks, big plates of delicious food, and bottomless cups of fantastic coffee. But there's a special place in my heart - and, by extension, my arteries - for a place like Frank's. You see, most Saturdays I just want to roll out of bed, have a cup of coffee, and eat something solid. Some Saturdays I might be hung over and in need of a greasy breakfast. Some Saturdays I want to linger over a cup of coffee and work on the crossword. Frank's gives me all of these options. Frank's also offers the best damned diner French toast - which is an entirely different animal than the stuff at Zingerman's or Beezy's - we've had in a long time. Seriously, this toast is a magical concoction, filled with rainbows and fairy dust - er, a magical concoction involving what appears to be pancake batter for extra deliciousness. I can also vouch for the tastiness of their omelettes, though let's just not talk about the coffee. It's what you'd expect from a diner. We debated sneaking in coffee from Comet, but thought better of it at the last minute. If you want a tasty breakfast served by nice folks, Frank's is your place.
