Everyone who works there is so friendly, they seem to really enjoy working there. The food was really good, way better than the pictures. I also remember this place had a Bay Area location with pretty poor reviews, which is exactly why I never bothered trying it back then. It looks like that location has since closed. Only good thing is their service. Do yourself a favor and save your money. If you're willing to make the drive, there are so many better boba shops in San Jose that actually taste good and don't charge outrageous prices for mediocre drinks.

Get there early or prepare to wait in line--the secret is very much out. And deservedly so. The staff is exceptionally friendly, the setting is wonderful, and somehow the food tastes even better than it looks, which is an accomplishment considering the artistry coming out of the pastry case. Alta occupies part of the historic Cooper-Molera Adobe complex, and its back garden may be one of the loveliest places I've ever eaten breakfast. Passionflowers tumble over walls and trellises, potted plants and mature trees soften the courtyard, and shade sails make it an incredibly pleasant place to linger over coffee and pastry. It feels less like café seating and more like breakfast in a particularly lovely California garden. And then there's the food. I came back two mornings in a row. The first day's quiche was ham and roasted pepper; the second was cheese and mushroom. Both were outstanding. The egg filling had this almost impossibly silky quality, with a beautifully browned top and crisp, buttery crust. I found myself deliberately slowing down because I genuinely wanted to savor every bite. The pistachio-rose swirl was exceptional: delicate, flaky layers with honey, pistachio and rose playing off one another without becoming cloyingly sweet or perfumey. It's the sort of pastry that reminds you what laminated dough is actually supposed to be. The maple-bacon swirl was the only thing that didn't quite reach the same stratospheric level. The flavor was good, but the rendered bacon fat seemed to fuse some of those beautiful layers together during baking. At most bakeries I probably still would have called it very good. Alta had simply set an absurdly high standard for itself. Then a table beside me ordered the smoked-salmon toast, I saw it arrive, and resistance became pointless. Warm, hearty, thick-cut bread topped with crème fraîche, radish, pickled red onion, greens and a genuinely generous amount of smoked salmon. A triumph. Even the pistachio-honey latte was a dream. I can't rave about Alta enough. My only complaint is that I didn't have more mornings in Monterey to work my way through the rest of the menu. It was one of the culinary highlights of the entire trip and is now my benchmark for what an excellent bakery can be. Alta, you have ruined lesser bakeries for me. Five stars. No notes. Except: make more pastries. I have unfinished business.

What we received was a dry cake with hardly any flavor. My Mother thought it was just a yellow cake, she couldn't even taste the lemon. And she is an experienced baker. She made our lemon and raspberry wedding cake, that my husband was trying to recreate. The raspberry "preserves" were gelatinous, like pie filling from a can. Preserves should be a jam like consistency, only with larger fruit pieces. But sadly, this was goopy and artificial tasting. And the buttercream was greasy, not creamy, like it was made from Crisco shortening (not butter), sugar and water. It didn't even have any flavor (maybe they forgot to put vanilla extract in it?) Even the construction of the cake was poor. They clearly didn't put enough batter in the pans. Normally you shave the rounded top off to make it flat. This bakery just added tons of icing in an attempt to make up for the rounded edges. Which also meant there were barely any raspberry "preserves" in between the layers. And last but not least. When my husband special ordered the cake (in person) he asked for white sprinkles. When he arrived to pick up the cake, it wasn't ready. And they told him they didn't have white sprinkles. And offered to cover the entire cake in tiny rock hard pearls, that are typically only used sparingly for decorative purposes. Because they are so hard, many decorators recommend removing them before eating! My Dad bit into it and said it was like trying to eat buck shot. My Father has never met a cake or sweet he didn't like, until now. He didn't want another piece during his entire visit. My mother and I didn't even finish our first piece. To charge $70 for this 8" cake was just criminal. I would have returned it if I could.

I recently visited your café and was truly looking forward to the experience, given your long-standing reputation. Unfortunately, what happened during my visit was deeply upsetting. While waiting for my coffee near the counter area (where sugar, straws, and napkins are available), I asked my friend to take a quick photo of me. I was not filming your staff. Suddenly, one of your baristas confronted me in a very aggressive and intimidating manner, stating that I was not allowed to film and threatening to call the police if I didn't stop. I was shocked and immediately apologized, as I genuinely was not aware of any such rule. I complied right away. However, the tone and approach used were unnecessarily harsh and completely disproportionate to the situation. Being spoken to in such a threatening way over a simple misunderstanding was unacceptable and ruined my entire day. More importantly, the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and singled out. As an Asian customer, I could not help but wonder whether I was treated differently. I truly hope that was not the case, but it is important for you to understand how this experience came across. I fully respect privacy policies, but there is a respectful and professional way to communicate them. No customer should feel intimidated, disrespected, or unsafe in your establishment. I strongly encourage you to address this matter with your staff and ensure better customer service and communication in the future. read more

AAHHHHH ! I really want to give this place 4-5 stars because they have a good product, but just can't because their slogan "Resist Corporate Coffee" / Santa Cruz Hippster Anti-Establishment attitude is just a phony, hypocritical cover up of who they really are: Corporate capitalists !! (lol) I went in there one day - I'm a local, a surfer, and had been in there multiple times before. The dude behind the counter takes my order... Our conversation: Me: Hey man, your coffee rocks. Do you guys by chance give a free cup of coffee for every ten cups purchased? (Like all the mom/pop shops do - heck, even Starbucks...lol... the whole punch card thing) Tatoo'd guy: NO, we don't support entitlement programs. Me: So you're a capitalist? Boom - end of conversation, dude was ticked - wouldn't speak to me after that. Bottom line - good coffee, but the slogan is pure BS. It would have been cool if the guy had just said "No, we don't do coffee cards" - but his Hippster wanna be attitude backfired when he got called out that he was just a greedy dude who didn't like giving out free coffee once in a while to local, loyal customers. read more

Wow! This place is CREEPY! Why is it that people think they can put all sorts of weird stuff in their caffeine joints? The roaster/owner (?) has right-wing, religious crap all over the place. Unbelievable. At least starbucks just sells coffee, LOUSY coffee, but coffee. A friend who knows what a brew fiend i am told me about the place and i thought i'd check it out. The place had zero charm, sadly trying to be hip. The barista was a surly puss and the coffee was only fair, though not fair trade! No density, no acidity, no sparkle. Why did I ever move down here? Disappointing Coffee and really Overpriced I recently purchased two packages of ACME Roastery coffee with the intent of supporting a local business. Unfortunately, the experience was a total disappointment. Despite selecting a dark French roast, the coffee was flat and completely flavorless. To add insult to injury, it was also twice as expensive as other brands on the shelf. All in all, I'm out $40 and will not be buying ACME Roastery coffee again. It's really hard to support a local business when the quality isn't even close to the competition, especially at such an exorbitant price. read more

Amazing little hidden gem Espresso bar! This was my first time visiting but will not be my last. The gentleman at the register was very friendly and I bought a t-shirt that topped off my order. The latte was great. After walking up and seeing that they're using the pavoni machine with lever extraction, these guys are definitely doing something right. Their espresso is rich and has notes of almond and hazelnut from what I could pick out. Can't wait to visit again! read more

Love this oddball indie coffee place which is so different from your typical chain place. First you need to spend a little effort to find it on a back street in Sand City. The effort is worth it. This place is AMAZING! By far, my favorite coffee shop and I drive 45 minutes (regularly) just to get their Vanilla Latte. The facility is small, but quaint, and it isn't open on Sundays (bummer!), but the friendly workers really deserve to have a day off, so I can't complain. read more

Everyone has off days, and this may have been one of them. Still, genuine hospitality is often found in the little things: listening to a customer's request, acknowledging it when it's missed, and making people feel welcome rather than processed.

Talk about a hidden gem! I'm so glad my mom read about this place, because it is off the beaten…read morepath and we wouldn't have come across it otherwise. Even while searching for it (without a map), I didn't think we were going to find it. The shop is great, they have a bunch of food goods including oils, salts, crackers, jams, chips, and more! They also had a selection of cute little trinkets and some cookbooks. They have a fridge full of beer, wine, and milk, and then of course the fridge of their own house-made cheese. We came in on a Sunday and they have cheese toast Sundays. I'm not sure what their food options look like other days of the week, but they had signs that said they had a sweet and savory option every Sunday! They also had baked goods and coffee. My mom got the sweet toast option, which was an incredible Strawberry cheese toast, and I got a Croque monsieur. We also got to taste a few of their cheeses that they were sampling. We sat outside at one of the picnic tables. Other seating options including two large fire pits and some smaller tables. Such a great spot, can't recommend it enough, and I look forward to coming back in the future!
