Our culinary tour of Auburn-Opelika brought us to Acre, the restaurant often credited with putting this area on the map, led by Chef David Bancroft, who claimed victory on Netflix's Iron Chef Showdown in 2017. Acre sits quietly on E. Glenn Avenue in the heart of Auburn, surrounded by the hum of college life. It's a restaurant that practices what it preaches, with its own small plot of land where herbs, produce, and ideas seem to grow in equal measure. We came for lunch and were immediately greeted by the smell of smoke, the kind that wraps around you like a memory. Our table sat near the smoker, and when a chef opened its doors, the aroma of sausage drifted through the dining room, causing a collective pause. It was a scent that made promises, and Acre delivered on them. The fried green tomatoes arrived first, a southern classic that Bancroft transforms into something worth writing home about. Golden and crisp, they sat on a base of pimento cheese and were topped with sweet Gulf blue crab and a sharp Creole remoulade. It's a dish that bridges comfort and sophistication without ever losing its Southern soul. For my entrée, I chose the roasted duck flautas. The tortilla shattered on the first bite, giving way to rich, tender duck and the smoky warmth of hatch chili crema. Queso fresco and cilantro added brightness, a lift that kept the dish from feeling heavy. It's Mexican by inspiration, Southern by instinct, and all Bancroft by execution. My wife ordered the "Garden and Gun" grilled cheese, a playful nod to nostalgia and refinement alike. Thick sourdough, bacon jam, tomato, and American cheese served beside a silky tomato soup. The sandwich was built to be dunked, and when we did, it sang -- smoky, tangy, and just indulgent enough to make you forget everything else happening outside those walls. Chef Bancroft didn't just put Auburn on the culinary map, he redefined it. At Acre, tradition isn't something to preserve under glass, it's something to evolve, to nurture, to smoke until it becomes something new and wonderful. 5 Stars Southern comfort elevated to art, without ever losing its accent.

Acre in Auburn, AL, is farm-to-table dining that will take you on a culinary ride of taste buds. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with a rustic yet modern decor that enhances the dining experience. The menu focuses on Southern cuisine with a contemporary twist. Service was amazing as our server knew all the ends and outs of the menu. If you want a date night or just a baller meal after a hard fought Auburn Tiger win then this is the spot.

This was a super nice surprise. We were so frustrated that we couldn't get a reservation on the only night we were in town but decided to try walk in. And we were lucky to find four seats at the bar. Such a swanky farmhouse like feel. drinks were expensive but tasty. They forgot our oyster order so provided complimentary pimento cheese to tide us over. My hubby got the duck breast and my son got shrimp rigatoni. My daughter got a Caesar salad and I had the sweet potato from their shared community garden. All was good tasting food, even if maybe a little too rich and fancy for a college town experience. Recommended for special occasions. Only reason for four stars is the wait time for the food (long) and the quality of the food was good, not excellent.

    Wife's birthday celebration!

Very disappointed with our dining experience on my wife's65th birthday celebration! After being seated at our designated reservation time, we waited 25- minutes for the wine and then 45- minutes for the entrees which were both cold. We returned them only to wait an additional 35-minutes to get the second entrees... which were actually our first meals only slightly warmer and dry. It's difficult to reheat fish a second time! A positive result, management reduced our bill taking meals off ! A class act! We gladly paid for the wine and salads! This restaurant was highly recommended by our friends and this special birthday dinner but fell short of our expectations! You need to be better!

Acre is beautiful inside and out. From the valet, to the hostess, to the server, everyone at Acre was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We decided on a variety of starters to share as our meal, followed by dessert. We tried the "gas station" boudin balls, lacquered cornbread, fried blue crab claws, and fried green tomatoes (the star of the meal!). The fried green tomatoes are topped with fresh lump blue crab and plated on dollops of delicious homemade pimento cheese. The breading on the fried blue crab claws was heavy and mealy, which made them our least favorite. They would be amazing sautéed instead. Both the s'mores brownie and peach sundae were good, with the s'mores being our favorite. Overall, it was a great dining experience and is highly recommended!

Very cute restaurant and a popular spot even on a monday evening. I enjoyed my salad and the co-op beets plate, it tasted fantastic but our dinner service was a bit slow. Highly recommend making a reservation as seating is limited

Always one of my favorites! If nothing else swing by for peanut butter pie with banana meringue, truly my favorite dessert of all time. Appetizers like the figgy toast and the fried green tomatoes are also wonderful. The charcuterie boards are also great pairings. Drinks are tasty as well. I have dined at acre many times and the Christmastime bar menu is my favorite. Can't go wrong with acre!!!!

I came in solo as I had a hankering for oysters but I didn't feel like driving to Montgomery to Capital City Oyster bar. I will be taking the drive moving forward. I sat at the bar, the bartender was initially engaging & semi helpful towards the end of helping with the selection of oysters available and what else was on the menu. When I inquired about which ones I had received --OMFG, you would've thought I called the kid out of his name, raised my voice or had been anything besides extremely pleasant! The experience was so coded...I earnestly feel like there was an expectation for me to behave a certain way when I made the SIMPLE inquiry which made me so uncomfortable. It was so mentally exhausting and all I wanted was to PAY good food and a drink. The kid ended up taking off my oysters even though I did not ask and on top of that he was making me anxious with his anxiety, fidgeting and apologizing so much. I felt I was in the twilight zone. My drink was good although I do not remember what I had. The food (oysters and crab claws) were not impressive in any way shape form or fashion. And return, I will not.

I started off with the Moon Over Madagascar, and let me tell you--if this drink had a fan club, I'd be president. Now, let's talk about the shrimp and grits, because these were not just "good." These were "call your mama and tell her you've tasted greatness" good. The chef is from South Carolina, and you can taste every bit of Lowcountry pride in that bowl. Perfectly cooked grits? Check. Pile of blackened shrimp? Double check. A sauce that made me rethink my entire life? Oh yeah. If they sold that sauce by the gallon, I'd be bankrupt but extremely happy. Erica, our waitress, was an absolute rockstar. Super helpful, incredibly informative, and somehow managed to keep the perfect balance of friendly and professional--even on the Sunday after the Iron Bowl, when half of Auburn is stress-eating. The place was spotless too, which is impressive considering the emotional damage that game causes every year. Bottom line: The Hound is a must-visit. Come hungry, order boldly, and thank me later.

Let me start by saying the building is beautiful and the atmosphere feels like a nice restaurant. Also, the cocktail menu was definitely curated by someone who knows what they are doing. Our food came out lukewarm at best and honestly seemed like not a lot of thought went into them. I know that this restaurant is supposed to be upscale, but I don't think I should pay 55$ per persons meal and still leave hungry. Also, the staff needs training. The whole time it felt like they were concerned with fast turn over and nothing else. Part of upscale dining is that the price of food and quality of service is more important than turn over time. After a semester fueled by ramen and an alarming quantity of Chick-fil-A, she heads straight for the spicy penne crowned with perfectly cooked filet medallions. A wise choice. They don't take reservations, and yes, you may linger outside awhile on a busy night. Stay. It's worth it. For those of us with Gulf Coast roots, the menu reads like a love letter: blackened catfish done right, crispy crawfish tails, and cheese-laced grits that feel like a warm welcome home. The fried green tomatoes are a standout--golden, crisp, topped with grilled shrimp, and finished with a balsamic glaze that somehow works beautifully, even if it strays from tradition. The shrimp and grits, the catfish, the pasta--all hits. Cheesecake for dessert, especially if you're loyal to a graham cracker crust, is non-negotiable.
