Toppings for the fro-yo.
Jenn R.

The space felt cozy and casually charming with a coastal bohemian aesthetic that fit San Clemente perfectly. Dining tables inside, but most sit in the small outdoor patio tucked neatly into the front corner of this cafe; ideal for sunny days and people-watching. For this visit, I opted for a beverage (no food). Oh, and I did fro-yo tastings too. THE DRINK. - Orange Creamsicle Shake. Sweet, creamy, and citrusy with a subtle tang that nailed the nostalgic creamsicle flavor. Highly recommend! THE PARKING. Street parking was available nearby, but we had to pay attention to the posted time limits because it seemed a little complicated (to me, at least). THE VERDICT. Loved the orange creamsicle shake, but I also spotted a date shake on the menu, which only means another visit is needed!

This place is on the Main Street of San Clemente. Cute place & service was great. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Parking can be tough. I came with some friends and we all got some sort of bowl or tacos. Everything was good. After our meal, I ended up getting a peanut butter smoothie. It had coconut in it and it was delicious! I would definitely come back.

So refreshing and tasty!! Inside the restaurant is clean and so many froyo options to choose from. They have a ton of fresh and flavorful toppings that you can add to your bowl as well. The froyo is made and serve yourself. Highly recommend if you are looking for a healthier sweet treat.

This was my first time at this family-owned business and found it thru my trusted Yelp App. I was in the mood for something healthy and fruity. I walked into a very chill shop. The staff behind the counter was friendly and helpful since I was new to the AC family. I ordered a meduim Bountiful Acai Bowl. It had greek yogurt and organic Sambazon© Açaí topped with organic granola, banana, blueberries, strawberries, flaxseeds, as well as organic agave nectar. Sooo yummyyy!! It's exactly what I needed to nourish my body. Thank you AC for your dedication for serving foods that fuel our bodies and souls :-)

I love Active Culture more and more, every time I come. I love their healthy ingredients. I recently had the potato tacos and holy decliousness! They were filled with crisp slaw, ripe avocado, and had a super yummy drizzle of fresh sauce (maybe a tahini ?). They have fresh cucumber and regular water, as well as various drinks like kombucha or sparkling waters. Also, if you're not hungry for a meal, I highly recommend their fro yo. I'm craving it right now. They even offer gluten free and vegan options and have an array of various toppings. So much good! The only negative is there's very little parking around.

Incredible local SC spot! This has been on my list for the last 2 years. Since I am moving here in the next few months I am digging deeper into the local spots. I'm not super into vegan food, i love vegetables but a lot of the food is GMO soy and seed oil focused, which I am not into at all. I noticed Active culture does it right and goes lighter in these ingredients. Today I had a protein shake with house made almond milk and butter, hello protein, bananas and ice. It was Excellent! I will 100% be back.

I eat here at least once a month. Excellent clean and healthy food. Great vegan options. I love that they have locals day once a month 50% off makes it even tastier. Got the hummus quinoa salad, vegan chili soup, and blue dream shake. Great service, upbeat music, lots of seating. Excellent health food and place overall!

I have been to the Actuve Culture in Novato, California and it was a memorable experience. I just recently found out that they have a couple of locations in Southern California. I visited the one here in San Clemente on the way back from a long hike. I was very dehydrated and what I usually go for is açai bowl. I went ahead and tried the protein açai bowl which has nuts and fruit. The bowl is a very good sized portion and even though I was hungry, I could not finish it and had to take some home. They have self serve yogurt and free samples also. Additionally I grabbed their lentil burger to go because it is so good and flavorful and very filling. It had a hint of curry, which I like. I like the shop. I like the walkable location. I like the menu. The staff is very friendly. Casual. Street parking. Please come and create your own adventure .

Food: Clean food using simple ingredients. Their menu emphasizes choices that are vegetarian friendly. I got the quesadilla with OG sauce and was genuinely impressed by the flavor of sauce. The presentation was nice, but I wish the avocado were mashed like they are in the nachos so that you're not stuck trying to dissect giant slices. The nachos were really good and the creamsicle was a good blend of cream and sweetness. Service: Everyone was really friendly and you leave your plates at the table to be bussed by the staff. Ambiance: the interior is very clean, modern minimalist and well organized.

*SPECIAL* Pecan Pie Shake

We've been a few times and haven't been let down yet. This time I got a velvet acai bowl with peanut butter. I really want some fresh fruit and it hit the spot. My wife got a pecan pie smoothie which was very tasty. It was basically a date shake with pecans and maple syrup. It was a little sweet but nice to share.

froyo!!

I wish more places like this were in LA, because it would pop off there. Healthy, aesthetic, and delicious. I came here solely for the froyo but heard great things about their savory menu items. I came here on a late Friday afternoon and to my surprise they have a 50% off deal on Fridays from 3-5pm for froyo. The froyo serving stations are clean and the flavor offerings are all so good. I tried their peanut butter, tart, and coconut vanilla, all of which tasted great. My only complaint was that the coconut vanilla consistency was very liquidy. I would definitely come back to satisfy my froyo cravings.

Overall positive experience when it comes to food and ambiance and the surf community vibes. A little pricey.

Where's a good place to park?

I usually park behind it in the churches parking lot

Where can I find the nutrition info?

I just asked this yesterday. They do not have nutritional info available online. You can ask at the location and they have it available there, but it's not something you can take away.

At that time everything was outstanding, but this time I'm not sure if we'll go back. Ambience is excellent and customer service is excellent but the food quality is not great now. I ordered tacos and the first one was extremely spicy to the point that I almost didn't want to eat the rest. I tried the second one and it wasn't spicy at all which was strange. Third one also not spicy. Very inconsistent. Quality of the food feels like it's not as good as well. I got two margaritas and the size was very small compared to other upper scale Mexican restaurants (most of it was ice) and the actual liquid was a small amount. They were tasty, but I think the alcohol content was very little. For $16-20 drinks I'd expect something with some alcohol in it and a larger portion. My girlfriend got the enchiladas and she said they were whatever. Nothing special. My friend got calamari and he said it was really fishy and sent it back. Not sure what's going on in the kitchen but they need some help. Customer service was excellent though, just the quality and size of the drinks was disappointing. Oh well. Very expensive for what you get and not worth it.

Also, wow, San Clemente runs on a different clock. I don't know if it's just the beach or what, but service was so slow in that specific "I'm out of my tax bracket" kind of way. CHIPS WITH SALSA & FRIJOLES: 5/5. Generally not a frijoles person, but this one was good. BIRRIA TACOS: 5/5. Flavor was good, smoky. PORK BELLY: 3/5. Dry. Tortillas & sauces saved it. OCTOPUS: 1/5. This was definitely the culprit, as my partner and I shared every dish... except this one. I suspect it was the salad, since the octopus was fully cooked, and most food poisoning cases are from mishandled produce, which seems like a failure at a very basic level.

We sat for probably 10 minutes before anyone greeted us, it was 3:30pm so it wasn't very busy, maybe 3-4 other tables. Every time someone came after that we had to wave someone down for water refills, never asked anyone if we wanted more drinks from the bar, nothing. Had my father in law asked for more ice tea and they never even started a new pitcher in 15 minutes. It was not busy. The place had a to of gluten free options which is a reason I wanted to try it. My server had no idea what gluten was. For a place that had half the menu marked as gluten free I was really surprised she really had no knowledge of the menu, but she was nice enough to go ask some questions when i pressed a bit that I wasn't vegan, and it was like an allergy. The food was good, portions were large enough and everything was pretty good as far as the food. Not sure why the service was so incredibly patchy and absent when we ate at 3:30 and the place was 2/3 empty. It was pretty good, I may try again but for the price point I think the service can be a little better. Nice...but slow. Definitely need more training on the menu! Mid. Not bad. Not great.

Just very very casual and not totally comfortable. Food- 3.4/4 out of 5 - I got the Luau plate and LOVED the chicken!! Everyone else was right- that chicken thigh deserves its own plate. I also really enjoyed the coconut pudding/jello thing that came with it and the sausage link. The pulled pork was just okay, not very well seasoned but not bad. The side of "dressed greens" was just some lettuce without dressing on it, and I thought the macaroni salad was fine. The last thing that really disappointed me were the sautéed veggies :/ they were just soo oily and had no seasoning to them at all. I didn't eat any of them or the un-dressed 'salad'. My husband got the chicken katsu plate, he said the chicken katsu was fine but the fries on the side were cold and not crispy, they were kind of chalky in the mouth and didn't taste fresh. Some parts were definitely a 3/5 but my chicken thigh was so good and the portions are *huge* so I feel like they deserve a 4/5? All in all, I think I'd come back if I wanted to go out with someone but save some money and we'd split one of the plates (the portions really are huge).
