After running my first marathon and needing to rehab, I decided to get into cycling. I wanted something fast and functional, but also unique. A lot of modern bikes out there are pretty intimidating just from a $$$ and technical perspective, I wanted to jump in with something fun. I decided to go with Adopt a Bike based on their selections...it's so exciting getting daily updates on their Instagram page as they put out these beautiful restorations. I tried a few bikes at their location for a few weeks (and they are all amazing btw) until they had a beautiful, vintage silver Windsor that I really loved. I had a few squeaks and bolts loose as I rode it for a few weeks, Jose was really kind and took another look at it for me. It runs almost like a brand new bike honestly, just perfect and exactly what I initially had hoped for. My wife was looking for a simple road bike for her commute to work, and was very happy with the images she saw on the tumblr page. We went to the shop, which is filled with vintage bikes. There are so many sizes and shapes and colors. Jose is really nice, makes you feel good about what you are purchasing, and has a good eye for bikes. He is helpful in finding what you are looking for. We were able to leave with a slick looking bike for what I would consider a reasonable price, and in good working order. If you have bike knowledge, I think it would make more sense to buy/build/fix something yourself. But I think for the majority of people who don't have the time, space, or knowledge to fix a bike this is a better option. It takes away so many of the hassles of finding a good bike: looking one that looks nice and is in good condition, driving to somebody's sketchy house that you found on Craigslist, wondering if it is stolen, taking it to a bike shop, probably paying way too much for a tune up, ... I have a lot of experience getting dirt cheap bikes from craigslist and from my experience it's so worth it to spend 300 or so bucks on a reliable bike from a trust worthy source instead of ending up spending hundreds more because of crappy parts and having no accountability from the seller. This place is great.., very nicely refurbished bikes at good prices and great customer service. About 2-3 weeks after purchasing a Raleigh 10-speed (totally cool bike) I had a slow leak in the rear tire. I brought it back because Jose said I could if there was a problem. It turns out the tire/inner-tube was not defective. Jose parlayed the situation into an opportunity to show me how running over thorns can cause flats. He disassembled the tire where we discovered a thorn had punctured the inner tube. Even though I was "at-fault" Jose still provided his service at no charge - he fixed the flat. Thank you! If you're looking for a bike, I definitely recommend you check this place out. I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the bike I purchased and Jose is cool. I am incredibly lucky to have found Adopt-A-Bike. I had just moved into Santa Monica and I was looking for a commuter cycle, but I couldn't find any used bike shops in the area. I was prepared to buy a glossy new Giant or Felt when I came across Jose's site. First thing I noticed - the bikes are beautiful. Art piece beautiful. And the Tumblr site is easy to use and navigate. Then you get to the storage room. There are so many awesome bikes! And they've refurbished them wonderfully. I tested out three bikes and Jose was really patient and tweaked the measurements as I kept re-trying them until I found one that I couldn't part with. I ended up picking up a Peugeot that has already turned heads in Santa Monica and proven it's worth on the hills. These bikes are in great shape, they'll last forever if they're well maintained, and the prices can't be beat. I'm putting the extra savings into lights and a top notch u-lock for safety and security, and I'm happy to be riding in style each time I take to the road. Can't say thank you enough. I came across Jose's site on Craigslist and contacted him by email. He worked with me to set up a day and time to check out the bikes I was interested in. His shop is easy to find and the variety of bikes available is incredible - mainly because he carries bikes as small as 44cm! I'm not a tall girl (#petitepride) and it can be difficult to find a good used bike under 50cm. He let me test ride the bikes I picked out, made sure everything was in working order, did a safety check and sold me some lights cheap :) I'm happy with the bike so far and I'll update with more thoughts after a couple weeks of riding ! I tend to be very uh, impulsive with my purchases. If I see something pretty, I am more likely to buy first and investigate later, which has cost me a couple pretty pennies in my life, but I can't help it! I like what I like! I judge books by their covers. I am vain. I was perusing the good old trolls of craigslist when I came across a beautiful purple Peugeot with the original seat, handlebars, and pump. It was everything I could ever want in a bike. But at $300, it was just out of my price range, so I decided I would check out a nice Schwinn I saw in a different ad, which led me to the Adopt A Bike website. I contacted Jose and within a couple of hours I was parked out front, excited about the prospect of having a good, well-riding bike. So when I walked in... Well, there it was. That damn purple Peugeot. Turns out Nicole had posted it on CL but not yet on their actual website. Of course, the Schwinn was nothing compared to this thing. It was...sigh. I was ready to spend $220 on this blue Schwinn so I talked myself into the Peugeot. Dammit. It hadn't been listed on their site yet because Jose hadn't had a chance to work on it yet, but since I was in love with it, he told me he'd finish it that night and I could come get it in the morning. Woohoo! That night I wondered if I had made a mistake, if I was paying too much for style and not enough for substance. But when I picked it up the next day, I was in love. The night I got it home, my bf and I took it out for a spin. Wind in my hair, I rode that thing for two glorious blocks before I started feeling a thump, thump, thump. Oops, the back tire was flat! I was crushed. I have a hand pump at home so I pumped it back up but, when I came back to it a little while later, it was flat again. Noooooo! I emailed Jose and mentioned I thought the tube was busted, and he was more than willing to take a look at it for me. Brought it back to him today and he replaced it quickly and of no cost to me. So now it's perfect! Obsessed. You can't get more Mom and Pop than this. I'd been searching for a good, aesthetically pleasing, no frills road bike for months. Craiglist led me to some close calls but none in which I was confident of the quality of the bike. Used bike shops only carried spotty inventory and often charged $500+. I had a budget of $350 and test rode 5 or so bikes at Adopt A Bike, all beautiful and in great condition (from Peugeot, to Canondale, to Bianchi, to Univega). Don't be turned off by the appointment-only policy. They respond to emails within 20 minutes or so and are such generous, kind people, you'll never want to give anyone else your business. I've been searching for a bike for a couple weeks and luckily stumbled upon Adopt A Bike LA. It was perfect! The site has several photos of bikes posted with lots of information about the make and features. I was a little turned off by the email for appointment but honestly just like every other review has mentioned, they respond back very quickly and are quite pleasant to chat with. When my appointed time came I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with the way things run with Adopt A Bike. Dozens of used bikes laid out for you to check out and test ride. Everyone is extremely outgoing and easy to talk to, I felt very comfortable when asking about the numerous bikes. Especially since I am a newbie within the cycling world. Ended up purchasing a shabby chic Murray road bike, and I adore it very much. Went here a while back to find a used road bike for my friend who is petite (45cm frame), and has had 2 bikes stolen, and 1 bike totaled in an accident last year. The by-appointment only nature of the business might make you think that you won't be able to make a same-day appointment, but the dude is super prompt, and got back to us within an hour to set up a meeting for the early afternoon. I had called around to other bike stores in the Downtown/University area before we set up the appointment, and no one else had used bikes in either that small of a size, or for a good price, and none were as polite as this guy. We had a great experience!! He let my friend and I (even though he knew I wasn't in the market!) try 2-3 different bikes, and scoot about the low-traffic street the place is located on. He didn't rush us, and was happy to explain all about the bike and give her tips on maintenance. We left with an adorable, reasonably priced (for LA) bike that my friend loves! read more

Let me start this off by saying I never write yelp reviews - so obviously these guys made an impression on me. I haven't owned a bike in a couple years and don't know a whole lot about them, so I was hesitant to start shopping even though I've known for awhile that I wanted one. Luckily, a friend of mine told me about Adopt a Bike LA and after sending an email (it took Jose all of 30 min to get back to me) I was set up for a same-day appointment. There's a great and affordable selection here, something for everyone, and Jose was super helpful and patient in letting me ride as many bikes as I wanted before deciding on "the one." He then re-taped one of the handle bars that had gotten janked up, removed the kickstand which I didn't want, and pumped up the tires before I bought it. He even helped me load the thing into my car. Super amazing service. I took the bike for a spin on the LA river immediately afterwards and I am in loooove. read more

I have purchased two bikes from Jose. The location is pretty easy to spot. Jose will usually update you if anything arises and is very good about time. He will usually reply to you quickly to set up an appointment. I tried multiple bikes and was indecisive at times, but Jose was patient and allowed me to test out the different bikes multiple times. He even offered suggestions and did not pressure me to make a quick purchase. The bikes that I purchased were great! Very well maintained and ran great. Sadly, the first one was stolen, which lead me to purchase another one. I immediately wanted to purchase from Jose since not only was the bike in great condition but the service is always the best as well. The second bike I purchased is fun and a great joy to ride. I'm so happy with the appointment I just had. Jose is so friendly and patient. When the seat of the bike I wanted couldn't go quite low enough for me (I'm 5'1") I was really disappointed. He figured out a work around by swapping the metal seat cylinder piece with another one that was slightly shorter and it totally resolved the issue. Got a pretty bike that looks new at a great price. I made an appointment with Jose after seeing an ad for a bike that matched what I was looking for (tall, step in frame road bike). He was super nice and informative - I couldn't transport the bike that day so he let me put down a deposit to hold the bike for a day or two. He knocked $60 off the price of the bike in exchange for an old bike that had been sitting in my yard for some time. I bought the bike and although it ran smoothly when I tested it out, I noticed something was wrong when I tried to ride it that night. It was a little annoying to have to bring the bike back to be fixed so soon after purchase but Jose quickly fixed it for me, no questions asked and free of charge (within the 30-day warranty). He has a great collection of bikes and really seems to know his stuff. The bikes are unique in that they're refurbished but work like they're brand new! Super happy with my purchase; I would just recommend double checking or having him double check that everything is good to go on your bike before taking it home. read more

My son wanted a vintage 1980s 10 speed and found this company on Craig's List. I was a little disappointed I had to drive from Woodland Hills to Mid -City but my son saw a bike he liked online. The hour and a quarter drive was worth it. They work by appointment only out of an industrial brick building. Jose met us and showed my son the bikes he was interested in. There was a really nice selection of cool old bikes and once I found one I liked (a vintage 1970s Nishiki), Jose attached a basket on the front for me. Jose and Nicole are GREAT, Their little baby is adorable too! Buying Experience: This is a legit, no hassle, used bike shop. They're very straight and honest with you about where and how they receive their bikes and the process they go through to restore them. These bikes ARE used but as far as what I could see, most of them were in great riding condition. Customer Service: Jose was VERY patient and kind in addressing all of my questions and concerns, he even replaced the chain with a new one right before I took off (without requesting him to do so!). They'll size you and adjust every bike before take-off. I did read online somewhere that these guys are ripoffs and blah blah blah blah, but after purchasing my bike today, it's pretty obvious that it was posted by a competitor or someone who couldn't sell their bike on craigslist. Jose and Nicole only do GREAT work, they don't mislead you in any way, and honestly...you can just tell that they're GOOD people with a genuine disposition and a very real passion for what they do and I love that. Product: MY purchase was for an 80's Peugeot and it looks flipping sweet, It rides great so far and there doesn't seem to be any issues. I was even stopped in the subway station by an admirer 30 minutes after I bought it and I gladly proceeded to give him Adopt A Bike's #. Extras: As a business owner myself, me and Jose were able to talk in detail about business and ways they succeed and fail. We agree that being a good person, doing good work, and doing your best is a pretty good recipe and that's what he does. I'm I'm just so impressed with this whole set up.
