About 10 months ago, I fell while my Nikon D7000 was hanging around my neck. The lens, a Nikon 18-200mm VR hit a rock and the UV filter shattered. The lens frame was dented as was the camera barrel where the filter attaches. The filter could not be removed. I sent the lens to Advance Camera Repair and they fixed it for $85.00...I was expecting it to cost way more. When I got it back it was like new. Then three weeks ago I noticed that the filter attachment section of the lens barrel was loose. I called Brooke (my point of contact there) and she told me she was sending a UPS call tag to pick it up. they fixed that problem at no charge and paid shipping both ways!! Wow. I have had a good experience, and a horrible one. They fixed a bad reflector panel in my DLSR for me for cheap. That was the good expirience. That was overshadowed by the next visit. I accidentally deleted a folder on my flash card of an awesome shoot. I called to ask how much data recovery would be. The woman on the phone quoted me no more than $60. When I brought it in, I was quoted $150 or something crazy like that. This is when I discovered a much better shop south of town, who charged me $30. I will never go back to this place because this was the biggest "rip off" I have ever heard of. read more

Yikes. I'm hoping my experience was just an off day for the staff, because there are so many glowing reviews on here! I interacted with two condescending associates who told me there was nothing wrong with my camera - I guess that's good for me. Unfortunately when I got home and tried to take pictures, I discovered they had removed my memory card and not put it back in. When I called to check if they had it, they insinuated that it was my fault for not asking about it before I left the store. This entire experience was a let down. read more

These guys are awesome! I took my Nikon D800 in to get fixed as it wouldn't autofocus. They reviewed the problem on the spot and found a problem with the mirror and another part that was hanging up. They secured this part and aligned the parts. After about 15 minutes it was fixed and they said it was complimentary. You don't find businesses that do this sort of service any more. This is a locally-owned camera and repair store. Which, I think, is great because I want to keep the money here. But, Advance Camera does more than sell and repair photography equipment. They are also one of the greatest resources for operational knowledge on all cameras and accessories that one can find anywhere. I'm always needing help on different equipment, like flash attachments for example. I can go into Advance Camera and get terrific counter service. I've even called in on the phone and was given as much help as I needed to get me through a problem. When I buy equipment from them, they don't try to push any particular brand or model. They ask questions to find out what my needs are, and then they give professional advice on what would best fit my needs. And, to add to their great breadth of knowledge, Jordan (one of the cool guys behind the counter) knows Photoshop and all the plug-ins inside out. He'll give great help on all computer software that supports photography. Jordan's also a terrific photographer (duh!). He's got some of his work hanging on the walls in the shop, and he'll be more than happy to provide suggestions for photo printing. I thought I had ruined my Canon SX280HS by adding velcro to the battery cover based on advice from the Canon user forums. Unfortunately the "fix" jammed the door closed. I brought the camera in and the tech popped a little opening, trimmed the velcro, and in 2 minutes I was on my way. And all that for No CHARGE! Thank you Advance Camera and I'll keep re-telling this story for many years. read more

I sent a lens and camera for service. They did a great job with the lens and the price was very reasonable. However, there were issues with the camera service. The camera had not been completely repaired, so I shipped it back to them, at my expense, for follow-up warranty service (for the record, I don't fault them for this). On July 6, I was told that they were ready to ship the camera back to me. On July 19 (9 business days later) I hadn't received the camera so I called them. They had mistakenly not placed the package for outgoing shipping, so it was still with them. So after nearly 2 weeks they finally shipped it out. But instead of shipping it out next-day or 2-day delivery, they chose to use standard UPS ground shipping (the cheapest method). I didn't receive my camera until Jul 25, 19 days (13 business) after they first notified me that it was to ship. In summary: They made a mistake and my camera wasn't shipped for nearly 2 weeks after it was ready. It would have been longer had I not checked with them. They could have reduced my wait by almost a week if they had shipped next day delivery. They did not. They could have made some sort of good will offering to make up for the inconvenience they caused. They did not. They gave me a terse apology. I feel like they made a minimal to no effort to provide customer satisfaction. read more

Can't say I was overly impressed by my first encounter with Advance Camera. I dropped my DSLR off for minor repair and they said they would call with a report and estimate. After 4-days with no reply I finally called them. "OH, the tech is out to lunch. We will have to call you back". It was 1:30pm. They never called back. The next day I called again. "Oh the Tech is here but I see his door is closed. We'll call you back" WTF? The door is closed?? So, open the door and talk to the guy. Finally I needed my camera for a project (my repair didn't affect photo function). I picked my camera up and Advance said they would keep my place in the cue and call me when the repair slot opened. It's been two weeks and not a peep out of them. I think I will take my business elsewhere, thanks. read more

I dropped my beloved lens off last week, after an incident in which it was damaged. The people at Advance said that they'd be able to give me an initial estimate on the cost of repair and turnaround time on the repair in 1-3 days. I told them that anything that they could do to expedite the process would be greatly appreciated, since this was my main lens in a fairly specialized area of photography. Anyway...6 days later, and they haven't even looked at the lens yet. As you might imagine, I'm a little disappointed. read more

We are very impressed with their great customer service, knowledge, speed of service and repair prices. Jordan was very helpful and knew immediately what caused our camera malfunction. He was humble and deferred to the experts in the repair area. Cathy did the repair on our Nikon D70S and called us to explain the repair and consult with us on another issue, repair of our older Nikon zoom lens. She was very knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful--even calling around to other repair shops and online to find the necessary lens parts. The repair was fast, professionally and done on-site. The cost was half the price of sending the camera to Nikon or other shops. My Nikon was acting a bit off and I really could not figure out why, so after a little research I decided to take it into Advance Camera. Right away I was greeted by a very nice lady and she helped me right away! Quickly she found out what was wrong and helped me to understand how to fix the problem. My experience with Advance Camera was not quite as good as some others. Advance Camera was highly recommended. I sent them a dozen lenses to be completely CLA'd. They did a fine job on the prime lenses I sent them. The prime lenses included both wide angle and telephoto lenses. However, zoom lenses were a completely different story. They returned three of the zooms stating that the lenses could not be repaired for variety of reasons. True to their policies, they did not charge for the inspections. Of the other three lenses the reviews are mixed. One of the zooms they CLA'd, a Kiron 30-80mm f3.5-4.5, they did a great job. However, the other two lenses, both Vivitar 28-90mm f2.8-3.8 Series One vari-focal zooms were not properly CLA'd. Both lenses were in excellent physical and optical condition and both had slow, sticky apertures. I wanted the lenses completely taken apart, cleaned, re-assembled and calibrated. They quoted a price of $150.00/lens. To me these lenses are worth it. I instructed them to proceed. A few weeks later I received the lenses. I checked them out and they appeared to work fine. The gentlemen who used to repair my lenses always told me that some companies do not properly tear down this particular Vivitar lens. They try to clean the aperture blades in situ. And, the proof of that is after 12-18 months the sticky aperture blades return because the repairer did not clean out all the old grease. Well guess what, I am 99.9% sure that is what Advance Camera did with my lenses. Within 18 months the aperture blades were again slow. When I called them, the woman who answered the phone, it was Jodi, made every excuse in the book.. "You must have let the lens get too hot....too cold... no we use the best lubricants...your lenses are out of warranty, etc. etc." Not once did she offer to look at the lenses to see what the problem was. Then they put Jayesunn Krump on the phone. He wanted me to go over everything again. I told him I just explained everything to Jodi and she could bring him up to speed. At the very end of my discussion with Jayesunn, he finally suggested I send them the lenses. As a professional I would not send anything to Advance Camera to be repaired. Their work cannot be trusted; it is inconsistent. With what I know about lens repair, It is my opinion the tried to fix my Vivitars on the cheap and their repairs failed over time just as my original repairman said they would. Now, you probably wondering why I didn't send the lenses to my original repairman, he retired and was no longer physically able to do the work. read more

Went in today with a broken vdo camera. The lady took a 5 mins assessment and make a call about parts availability, came back with estimate. Honest and direct. Though the repair fee (parts and labors) are not to what I wish for and I ended up not fixing it, but I really appreciate their quick assessment and integrity. We really love Advance Camera. They are full of helpful folks...maybe you are looking for a used camera, or a bag, or batteries, or a lens cap. Maybe you have questions about functionality, settings, or "how to". The folks here are full of information and happy to share. No question is dumb, because we are all trying to learn. The older Panasonic Lumix we bought has been excellent and insight into the camera from Advance was very helpful (we had owned Canons before). We got a lens cap free, as the Lumix kit was missing one...as well as an hdmi cable that it was also missing. Nice that they are in Beaverton, and not far away. We will use them for equipment and repairs in the future! read more

I went to Advance Camera last year with my Nikon D50. The camera wouldn't focus at times. At Advance Camera, there was a lady who helped me. She tried her lens on my camera and it focused well. So the problem was the lens. She also looked online and suggested that I should order another lens from Amazon. That was the cheapest option. Didn't charge me anything. I found this place by accident and glad I did! I needed a minor repair on my camera, contemplated sending it to Canon, however when I couldn't obtain a quote from them, I decided to look for other options which led me to Advance Camera. I spoke with various employees throughout the process - all of them very helpful. I shipped my camera from from NV and they took care of the rest. I had my camera well within a week and just like new. I can't thank them enough other than to write this review and send them more business through referrals. read more

I dropped my Nikon D5100 DSLR camera about a week ago from couch height onto a carpeted floor, and didn't think much of it since it wasn't a far fall until I tried using my camera this weekend. To my dismay, whenever I tried taking a picture only a sliver of the image at the top was discernible on my screen. The rest of the picture was black, almost as if it under exposed. After looking up a few repair shops online and checking out the Nikon website, I opted to go to Advance Camera rather than a shop close to my house based on reviews here. Boy I am glad I made the choice to go to Advance Camera! I stopped by the shop during my lunch thinking I would drop my camera off and get a call with the estimate for the repair later. I was greeted at the counter by Gabe. After telling him my story, he looks at my camera, and says he thinks he knows what is wrong with it. He then takes my camera to the back for a tech to check out, brings it to the front to try taking a sample picture, and voila - my camera was in full working order again! I was so happy! Gabe explained the mirror was knocked out of place and the tech just snapped it back in. These guys are AWESOME!! They could have easily taken my camera, charged me a crazy amount to fix it without me ever knowing how simple it was, but they didn't. Instead they were honest, very friendly, and fair priced (they didn't charge for the quick repair!!!). Whenever I need a equipment repair or cleaning, I am going to Advance Camera! i brought my binoculars in for columnation on June 16, put down a $30 deposit on a $60 estimate, and was promised they'd be ready in 4 weeks--6 weeks at the very latest. I called at Week 7; still not done. Called on AUGUST 21 and was told they'd be ready on August 24. Still not done when I called on the morning of August 28. Was promised them by 1:00 that day. Picked them up on August 29. Suggested that perhaps I should not have to pay the additional $30 due, given the 10-week delivery time rather than the 4 weeks initially promised. They found my paperwork as the last one among ~15 in their M files. Manager resisted, said "we're a small shop and very busy in the summer." He offered a $15 discount. I went in to find out more about macro lenses and got just what I needed. I could not recommend this store enough. At first thought, you might think that Advance Camera only focuses on camera repair but while talking to Jordan today about repairing my 18-135 Canon lens, I mentioned my technology issues with losing years of photos on my LaCie external hard drive. (I explained that an Apple tech already looked at the hard drive with no success and was directed by Apple to a reputable, but very expensive data recovery shop in California.) Jordan was extremely patient in answering my questions. He suggested that their techs could look at the drive and determine if they could save my photo files. SUCCESS! Dave, the owner and lead technician, listened to my concerns about losing years of photos, and he immediately tested the hard drive with his Mac. He suggested I run out to get a new external drive and he could transfer all my files while his computer was able to read them. Not only did Dave put the customer first, but he suggested a data recovery company in the Portland area that I could go to in case this transfer didn't work. Dave also was able to give me excellent suggestions for future data storage that will be more reliable for the volume of photos I save. Dave also was very empathetic about the repair to my lens and needing it by the weekend for a gymnastics meet. They are very accommodating and understanding about repairing the equipment efficiently and quickly. Each time I have brought in a camera or lens to repair, every employee was understanding, informative and professional. Prices are extremely reasonable and there is no question about their expertise in repairing a variety of equipment. I am extremely impressed with how they solved my problem with my external drive when it looked bleak. Dave, Jordan and the rest of the Advance Camera crew truly made my day by solving some serious issues with my equipment. It takes a lot to impress me as a consumer, but the main technician, Dave, went the extra mile. Having recently purchased a professional lens used, I was disappointed to discover the photos were not as sharp as I had anticipated. After some testing on my own which bolstered that opinion, I wanted to have a tech look at it. Another shop locally wanted $25 and at least a couple of days to check it out. Since I've had them look at lenses in the past, I decided to stick with Advanced Camera, in spite of the long drive. After figuring out a time when Dave was available, I drove across town to have him look at it. He examined the lens and confirmed my suspicions, and even had an employee write down his findings for me. Even more surprising, he did not charge me one penny. I offered to pay him for his time or give him a tip,but he refused. The level of service I received from him should be used as a case study in how to gain and retain customers. One thing I would like to mention is that I have received conflicting information from one of the female employees there regarding such things as how much a lens would cost to test, what type of equipment I need to bring, etc... In the distant past this has led to a wasted trip or two. However, the uncommon and superior attention in other regards completely supersedes those concerns for me. This is the kind of shop I hope continues to thrive, in spite of the online revolution. read more

My recent experience with the team at Advance Camera was excellent! The clinical camera I use for work (Canon G12) was dropped during a training session, cracking the piece that holds the swing arm view finder. Although parts are no longer being sold by Canon for this model, Kathy offered to try to hunt down parts on the internet if necessary, and to expedite the repairs since we use this camera daily for business. The other shops we'd called said 6 weeks at a minimum. As it turns out, Kathy had one used G12 and was able to use the part from that. Not only were they able to do the repairs while I waited (20 minutes, maybe), the cost was more than reasonable. I witnessed several customer interactions while I was there, and every person was receiving the same stellar service. The folks at Advance Camera are obviously committed to high quality service, and they've earned another lifetime customer! read more
