I had a car key duplicated here recently and they went out of their way to help me out. My only car key had recently been damaged and was being held together by tape. I wanted a backup just in case. First off - they were $200 cheaper than what the dealership wanted to charge. But beyond that, when I went to pick the key up, the owner told me he had also ordered me a replacement casing for my broken key (in addition to a full duplicate) - on the house. Buyer beware. They replaced a gate latch for me and one week later the new latch they installed stopped working. I opened the gate and used the latch maybe 20 times so seems like I obviously got a defective or poor quality part. When they returned they told me there was no warranty on the part or the labor and charged me full price for both again. Doubly annoying as I felt like I had paid top dollar/overpaid for the first visit & part but figured at least the problem was solved so didn't dwell on it. But now that I know they don't even stand behind what they sell, I wouldn't recommend them or use them again. read more

Neither key worked, one he cut on the wrong side of the key, key would not even go into the lock, the other was just wrong and does not open the mailbox. Possibly the most unprofessional and RUDE people I have ever had the misery of dealing with. At 11 am they are contacted to fix a lock-out situation. The were RUDE when they asked to text photos to a number which I couldn't write down while driving. I asked that they text that number. They texted an incorrect number. They were RUDE when I called back to let them know that sent me the number for a landline. I sent the texts tp a new number. HOURS go by. No ANSWER. I call agian. They are RUDE when they say the texts were igonored "sorry." And they were OUTRAGOUSLY OUT OF LINE when I suggested they deal directly with the property manager. Also insisted I took photos from inside the house when I didn't. My guess is these are a bunch of mysogonists. The literal worst I have dealt with. Called to get broken key out of home door lock. Came within 15 min. The guy didn't try to get key out. Showed me a $359 lock. I told him no. Then showed me a $279 lock I told him no just put my lock back on the door instead he put the $279 lock on my door I told him "I never told you to put that on my door". He said well *"how much do you want to pay".* *Swore at me when I wouldn't pay.* Called customer service they said they would call me back. Not only do they rip you off; I paid $497 for 2 deadbolts to be replaced, but I knew it was a ripoff - I needed it. less than 6 months later, I can't open my door b/c the lock will not retract into the door and they refuse to come fix it unless I pay. I keep getting lip service that they will file a complaint with the "complaint department". A "supervisor" Nicki, said she will "tell upper management". My parents and I are superstitious beings. We hide it well, but it's the truth. My mother reads and lives by horoscopes, we carefully dry wishbones on the kitchen sink before fighting over which pair gets to pull them, we enter houses right foot first, and we don't find it strange to say that something is "a sign." We do limit ourselves when it comes to palm reading (one bad experience), using the word "portent," and burning incense. That said, this past weekend, our superstitious sides went into hyperdrive. I couldn't get into my new loft. Twice. Door wouldn't budge, key wouldn't work, handle wouldn't turn. Nada. We left the keys in the rental car twice. My parents' hotel keycards didn't work. Wherever we turned, we were met with locked doors and useless keys. But we didn't listen. We didn't stay with the signs and keep our keys close and our shoulders strong for door-shoving. And we locked my keys in my new place. Of course, this meant that instead of being cool and calm, the three of us had to stand outside the front door and scream at each other incoherently for 15 minutes, only pausing to press our heads against the door to coo encouragement at my cat to suddenly develop the ability and interest in opening the door. And then we yelled some more. It was all very standard stuff for us. But we finally wised up and stopped accusing the other two of not reading the signs and keeping keys close. And we called Advance Lock and Key. They told us they'd be half an hour - they took only 15 minutes to get to us. They opened the door with the strangest wire doohickey I've ever seen - it took less than 30 seconds. It was, quite possibly, one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I don't plan on ever using them again, but should the signs point differently and should my keys somehow end up sitting on my kitchen table with me pounding on my own front door, Advance is the first call I'll make. The second will be to my astrologer (kidding!). EDITED-- I love when a 5 star drops to 1. Oh, wait, I don't. I got locked out again. My lock wasn't fixed (which is a whole other issue). I called Advance. They told me two hours until they could get somehow out. Fine, I'll run some errands. Two hours later? They call me to tell me they can't come out and open my door. No reason. They just can't make it. When I asked for a recommendation for another locksmith, they said they didn't have one. I understand if you don't want to refer me over to the competition, but after you've left me hanging for two hours and give me no reason for not being to open my door? F*ck you. Disappointed that after spending over $500 with them to replace doorknobs less than a year ago, they charge me $65 to come out and spend 2 minutes (I live 2 min away by car) to disassemble and reassemble doorknob to fix the latch that wasn't working properly. Called the owner to let him know and he was indifferent to my concerns, saying it was the manufacturers fault and if I didn't want the labor and service charge I should have brought the door in. Customer relations is not a strong point. I needed a skeleton key for a cheap China cabinet lock that got lost in a move. I had bought the lost skeleton key from a locksmith in Houston. He told me to bring in the whole door to get one made for about $50. I ordered a new cheap brass lock set for 11 bucks off of EBay and replaced the old system myself. Alex came out to fix some problems with the door locks at our house. The locks are made in Europe, so I was concerned whether locksmiths are familiar with them. It turns out that Advance Lock and Key and their technician Alex are experienced with them. They fixed a problem with the locks and provided us with new keys, and all three of the locks now work fine on the same key. read more

Excellent customer service. I was disappointed that a key I had cut from a key code didn't fit my lock. The owner calmly explained the key blank was out of spec, cut a new key, and more than made things right. A merchant's character is never more evident than when things go wrong. I just went into Advance because it was recommended to me by a friend I was moaning to this morning about my never ending key problems. I live in an old building and our old gates NEVER take new keys I have made. No joke, I have had more than a dozen keys made at various places in Santa Monica, Venice and Culver City, and not one has worked. Period. Until today! David (the owner) made me three keys, and he even took the time to "punch" the third incase the other two failed me. I just got home and tried all three and all three work!
