I have known Nery for at least 15 yrs and initially saw him for a smog check. Over the years, he has cared for my cars, has always explained things clearly to me and presented various options without tying to sway me. He talks respectfully to women, which I have greatly appreciated, particularly since women all too frequently get talked "down to" when seeking service from male service providers. When my care suddenly needed a new engine during my travels, he went the extra mile to find me a replacement, spoke clearly about his concerns regarding the replacement engines he was finding and went over and beyond to put my care together. Since the engine was out, it would cost no more to replace other old parts with new other than the cost of the oem parts. This option was presented but not pressured on me in the least. He put lot of extra time making sure I would be safe on the road since I would be traveling a very long distance. There was a lot of frustrations with the used engine, but Nery kept at it till things were right. Over the years, he has provided me with good advice and issues for thought when purchasing new vehicles. He has also gone on test drives with me. In the margins, I see comments from Willie F and Jon L., which really stuns me as I have spent a lot of time hanging out at the shop when I lived in Highland Park. Do not come here. Tony is the mechanic and he preys on his customers. My mother went in for new brakes w/ rotors on all four wheels in her Toyota Corolla. Tony claimed that all the rotors were "fine" and the rear pads were still in "good health" and he only needed to change the front brake pads. He instead convinced my mother she needed new front end struts. He charged her close to $1000 cash for everything he did do. He didn't resurface the front brake rotors for the brakes like you're supposed to when changing pads. The rear rotors and pads are non-existent and now I'm paying another mechanic to do the job right. Protect yourself and your family and don't come here. read more

I trust Nery. I refer all of my friends to him. He is no nonsense. He is like a car whisperer or automotive detective. Sometimes he can look at my problem and will fix it on the spot. My car is never there long. The turn around time is very quick. My car broke down and I had it towed to him. I was without a vehicle. He let me borrow a loaner that he had on sale in his lot. That car has since sold, so don't expect that kind of favor now. But I was very appreciative of his generosity and helping me out when I was in a jam. read more

I really like Tony and I think he is an honest man and runs an honest shop. I've had 2 smog checks from him and both times I passed on the first go, with an older car/truck. The only down side, is that his shop has nothing nearby to venture to, while waiting, so there is little option but to hunker down, at the shop, and wait. I called AAC to ask about a Break & Lamp certification for a salvaged vehicle. Nery answered the phone and was very direct and polite. He told me the inspection would take approximately 2 hours and cost $110. When I took the car in, Nery met us as soon as we pulled in to his shop. After explaining to him my needs, I left the car there and called him back 2.5 later. He said the car just finished the inspection, but there were many things that were wrong. He took the time by phone to list the issues and gave me a quote to repair them. I opted not to fix the issues since the cost was more than the vehicle was worth. When I went to pick up the car, Nery spent the time to show me all the problems in case I wanted to think about it-- whether I chose him to fix the problems at his shop or elsewhere. I do not know whether or not the estimate he gave is accurate, but I appreciate his professionalism and thoroughness both over the phone and in person. read more

For less than half the cost Nery wanted to charge just for brakes ($200), Without any attitude. nery wanted to charge an extra $90 to do another inspection if I did my brakes elsewhere. read more

I was recommended this place for a no-hassle quick fix for some features on my car and it was a delight. The owner, Nery, took the time to meet with me and personally oversee my vehicle, as well as explain in detail what he was going to do to fix the car (which is great for a non auto-head like myself!) I went in for a brake fix and an oil change, and he also caught an issue with my headlight which he fixed at no extra charge. He finished within an afternoon's time and he even delivered under his estimated price. Bottom line I was happy with a good price, good work and fast turnaround. I'll leave the facts here and let you decide. I went in for brake and light inspection. Passed brake, failed light. He said passenger tail light had to be replaced because it had a crack, middle tail light didn't work, the license plate light didn't work, and raise the headlights. He said the passenger tail light would be $67. I told him I've replaced it myself (the other side) for $30 from O'Reilly. He said I was free to call them, so I did, and they confirmed $32.99. He said that's a cheap part and he doesn't work with cheap parts. When I asked if I could take the car and fix that myself then, he said I could take it, but then he would have to inspect my car again and it would be another $110. I asked if I could have the brake certificate now since I passed that one and come back for the light certificate, and he said you can't split them up (which I came to find out is not legally true). I didn't see a better option considering if I left, I'd have to pay another inspection fee. So I said to go ahead and do it. When I got home, I called my stepdad (who is a mechanic and I should have just called him earlier) who asked me questions I wasn't sure of the answers to since I got overwhelmed with the price I was quoted ($390 out the door, $450 with smog), so we three-way called with the owner so my stepdad could ask some questions. The owner got upset we were asking questions since he said "he already explained all this to me," then said he's canceling my parts order and I needed to come pick up the car. Then he hung up on us. He only ended up charging me for the smog test (which I got the certificate for) which was decent of him. But: I took it somewhere else, and I've had my car completely fixed and got the certificates for a total of $208 (the inspection itself was $136, so the parts/labor to fix these issues was $72). And the tail light did NOT have to be replaced. And, they said smog inspections with certificates are normally $47. I paid $60 at Advanced Auto Care. read more

This is sort of half a review as I pulled in for a smog check because i had passed by this place many times before and noticed the shop being one of the cleanest I have ever seen. With one other customer ahead of me I had to wait a bit but eventually I had to leave because of the unbelievably loud music coming from the body shop next door. I mean I love Tijuana and all but generally dont want the sound of accordians and Guittarons shoved down my head while waiting to spend hard earned money on a state-forced mechanical check-up. There is no guess work with Nery, the owner. He knows his stuff and charges reasonably and honestly. I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan which had the check engine light on for 3 years. I have had 3 mechanics from different shops check, replace, and diagnose my van but ended up having the check engine light up again. I went to get my truck smogged and to find out all the sensors on the drive cycle were not complete. The technician Nuri explained to me in order to pass the smog the drive cycle needed to be completed. He asked me to drive the truck 50-60 miles no faster than 65 mph. After driving 70 miles I went back to check out how the drive cycle was and all the cycles were complete except the EVAC. He said in order to pass the smog that cycle needed to be completed and to continue to drive. I drove a total of 700 miles and went back to him to check and EVAC was still not completed. All along he stated many of his customers needed to drive many miles to complete that cycle. Confused, I researched through California emissions and California states a vehicle can pass if ONLY the EVAC was incomplete! I went to another smog station, AA VJ's Smog, and explained my situation and he stated if the EVAC was the only cycle incomplete, the vehicle will pass, and it did! I went back to Advanced Auto Care with smog certificate in hand and asked him if he can check my vehicle again. The EVAC was incomplete and stated it will not pass. I then showed him the smog certificate and he was surprised! He stated that my truck was already in his system and in order for his system to pass my truck the EVAC needed to be completed and would charge me an additional $30 to retest! I feel if Nuri was truthful and honest he would've told me to go to another smog station and it would passed! It would've saved me over 700 miles of gas (V-10) and drive time. I was upset because he was dishonest not only with me but with his other customers that needed unnecessary additional miles to drive. He charged for the initial smog test but didn't charge me for the certificate and I feel he was dishonest just to charge me the additional $30 for the retest. I normally don't write reviews, but after such a positive experience I was compelled to do so. To give you the short on things: if you're looking for quality and timely auto repair AT A GOOD PRICE look no further than Advanced Automotive Care. I know it sounds like a plug but really, the guy here, NERY, is great! Unlike other shops in the area that'll try to nickel and dime you, at AAC you can expect honest estimations UPFRONT. I've gone here twice and both times I was impressed and satisfied by the work done on my car (80's Toyota sedan). Nery's a pro and goes the extra mile to do the job right. When I went recently for my front brakes, he realigned my handbrake and rear pads along with topping off my fluids free of charge. During the job, he would call ahead of time to get my approval on additional repairs and articulate the necessity. Never once did I feel like I was being cheated, swindled or taken advantage of. Instead, I felt like I was in good hands and that my car was getting the attention it deserved. When I went to pick it up, only a day after dropping it off, he gave me a rundown of the work done and future repairs to consider. I love overviews like that, it's alleviating--now I know what else to fix and the urgency. All in all there's not a bad thing I can say about the place, maybe only that it was a drag being without a car, but THAT'S IT! I have been extremely happy with the service here, and it was a pleasure to work with the mechanic, Nery. I went in for a smog check for my VW Jetta, and the car had some problems and it did not pass. The mechanic, Nery, patiently explained what was wrong, and how to fix it. Fortunately it was not a major repair, but Nery gave me an honest price quote and educated me about the problems. Other mechanics would have surely tried to take advantage of my lack of knowledge (since it was clear that I din't know much about the internal workings of the engine!) and try to inflate the price. Nery was honest, and pleasant, and I really appreciated that. He ordered the parts on the phone, and the very next day - as promised - I could already pick up my car, no problems. Very fast and excellent service! I have looked at many smog and repair shops in the Highland Park area, but their prices and service are not nearly as good as the AAC. Passed my smog test but left with a headache. Shop was clean and the guy that ran the place seemed nice enough, but the music from the shop was way too loud. It sounds like a nightclub, making it tough to sit there while you're waiting for your car. Couldn't wait to leave and won't be back the next time I need a smog test. read more

Dishonest. Wanted to charge me $480 for a job I got done at another station for $70. They charge $95 for the lamp and brake inspection and certificate. Going in Nery warns that if you don't pass it will still cost you $88 and that you can have it fixed there or someplace else and come back. I had to ask if the re-test was free as in most smog stations. The answer is no, you will be charged again. He told me my headlights were too dim, even though the week before I had a brand new bulb put in one of them. He also told me that I needed a rear brake job to the tune of $260 and another $40 to adjust the headlights. He neglected to actually show me the rear brakes while the tires were still off the car to see for myself just how bad the shoes/pads were. So with both tests and repairs I was looking at $480 to drive out of there with a certificate so that I could get my car registered. I told him I didn't have that kind of money and he said "It's not my problem". I was upset and when he realized I really didn't have enough money for the repairs he stated I needed, he drove my car out of the garage and just said "you are free to leave". Now this would've have been okay except for the fact that he did not tighten the lug nuts on my car which put me and my family in danger. The car was riding bumpy and making a thudding noise. By the time I got off the freeway, two lug nuts were off the wheels and the rest were all loose!! The fact that he would let me drive off knowing full well that he had not tightened the lug nuts is unconscionable. The very next place I went to passed me with flying colors and only charged me $70 for everything. My opinion is that I wouldn't advise going to this place if you value you pocket book or your life. read more
