Been a customer for a while, moved there when the smog guy left the Chevron station and went to Ray's, well the smog guy isn't there anymore, but "Ray" is. Some dash lights came on and it was time to see "Ray". He had the car for 24 hours and had it seem to be running fine. Took it for a spin today and it was riding fine, let's cross our fingers no additional problems rear their ugly head. An additional bonus, I found a wallet in my car, but alas, it was the mechanics and it was reunited with him. I have more trust with these guys than other's I have dealt with over the decades. An added plus, the serpentine belt we paid two or three times to fix over a year or two ago,!is silent for now! We'll wait and see how long that lasts. read more

I called Ray's yesterday and inquired about the cost of a smog check. They said $65 and didn't ask what type of car I had. They said they open at 8:30, so after checking another local shop (that asked me what type of car and proceeded to tell me $75 for an SUV), I decided to stick with Ray's. They were efficient, courteous, and friendly. I was driving away very quickly (maybe in 15-20 minutes). I met Ray, the owner, and thanked him! These guys are great ! Came for a smog check since my mechanic doesn't do them. They were able to do it quickly on the spot even though they clearly had a lot of cars they were working on. Everyone was funny and sweet and they have a nice little sun umbrella and chairs set up on the sidewalk while you wait- so thoughtful. In June 2021, I purchased a used car that unfortunately had more issues than I had been told. The first was that it couldn't pass a smog inspection which was needed to transfer ownership. My regular mechanic told me he doesn't do that type of work and recommended Ray's Auto Repair. Ray kept the vehicle for a week. I called intermittently to obtain status of what he had found. When I spoke to him at the start of July, he informed m the car needed sensors, a water pump and at my request, inspected the air conditioner and concluded there was no Freon. I also advised him that the car did not drive smoothing and asked if he could inspect the tires and struts. I asked if he could perform a smog check since I did not want to have to take the vehicle elsewhere for yet another inspection. And I advised him that the interior of the car smelled like coolant. On July 10, 2021, I contacted Ray and was told the vehicle was ready to be picked up. I was elated but on my way home realized the vehicle was still not running smoothly and though Freon had been added the air was still not cold. Also, the interior of the vehicle continued to smell like coolant. However, I was elated that the sensors were repaired and that the vehicle had passed the required smog test. Ray also said there were no leaks to explain the smell of engine coolant. While returning home on July 10th, I realized the vehicle made a loud grinding noise when I changed gears. The interior of the vehicle continued to smell like Freon. I returned to Rays a few days later and asked if he could again check the tires and struts as the car was not driving smoothly and I informed him about the grinding sound. I also asked that he check the front driver side door because the electric window was non-operational. I periodically called to obtain status of the repairs. On one of the days I called, Ray said that the vehicle "might" need a new transmission the cost of which is $3,000. He asked that I leave it with him and allow him time to check everything on my list. On July 24, 2021, Ray called and said the vehicle was ready. When I arrived at the shop he informed me that he replaced the window regulator and that the window was now functional. He explained it needed a new regulator. He also said the vehicle did not need a new transmission. He explained that he removed the transmission oil plan and replaced a gasket, filter, and fluid fill system with ATF fluid and test drove it. He informed me that the car was running "great." I picked up the vehicle and discovered it was not running smoothly and the interior still had that lingering pungent smell of coolant. The driver side window also stalled when I lowered it and stalled when I closed it. Clearly, it was not a job well done. But the worse was still to come. I got on the freeway to drive from Eagle Rock to Pasadena and when I stepped on the gas peddle, the vehicle actually slowed down and sputtered. A yellow warning light came on the dashboard. I was forced to change lanes and was almost struck by a large truck until I drove off. Once on the streets the car drove moderately better except when I tried to accelerate speed. Fortunately, the drive was downhill and Ray's shop was only a few blocks away. Ray was surprised to see me and asked me to wait while he inspected the vehicle. While he inspected the vehicle, a man drove drove up in a Honda. He walked over to one of the mechanics and showed them an invoice and advised them that he was again experiencing issues with his car. . After concluding his inspection, Ray asked that I return it to him on another day adding that he needed to check the "governor." Due to the yellow warning light, he asked me to allow the vehicle to cool and then drive it home. Based on the amount of time the vehicle had remained at Ray's shop and due to the subpar quality of the work, coupled by the man who I observed returning his vehicle to the shop, I decided to find another mechanic. I found another mechanic who inspected the vehicle and concluded it needed a transmission which would cost $1500 or 50% less than what Ray would charge. He discovered coolant leaking into the cab. He also said I needed all new tires because the tires that were on the vehicle were all cracked and it would be dangerous to continue driving these. The mechanic also noticed that the rear lights were not equally bright and that the left hand signal light was not working. The repairs were performed and the vehicle has with exception of the air conditioning which remains weak, had no further issues. Ray is a very nice and polite man as are his employees but the quality of service is so ship shod I could never recommend him to anyone. He is truly a disappointment. read more

Do yourself a favor and take your car anywhere else. This mechanic doesn't know anything about cars. Not only did he start my car with no cooling system attached. But he then said my head gasket was blown and was misfiring and that I brought it in like that. Definitely not the truth because I had it running a few days before. So I took my van into Jack's Auto Repair and even he told me this mechanic doesn't know anything about what he was saying let alone cars. Ray's dipshit mechanic was him a charge me $2800+ to fix his fuck up. Jack's did it for $500. Take your car there to a mechanic that actually know what he's talking about. Unless you like paying more for shoddy work. read more

I first brought my main car to Ray's and had an oil change and breaks done. I thought the job was fine, nothing special, but they seemed honest and reasonably priced. So naturally, when I needed work done in our second vehicle I brought that to Ray's as well. Big mistake!!! Our vehicle needed some minor work that my partner couldn't do because he had back surgery. We had our car towed to the mechanic and they told us what should have been an easy fix was now going to cost us over 3k...what?!?! Turns out they started the car without the hoses attached when we said not to do that. They also made claims the car was damaged when it got there which is 100% not true. We ended up getting it towed to another mechanic who was able to do the work we originally needed for under a few hundred bucks and it turned out the mechanical fixes Ray's claimed happened, never actually happened. So you see, they completely lied about damages that never happened to our car just so they could squeeze us for over 3k. These guys are crooks and not to be trusted. read more

Everyone knows it's tough to find a good and honest mechanic. Ray came recommended to me by a trusted friend. The bushings on the lower control arms collapsed after just sixty thousand miles. In the process I also discovered a nasty oil leak. None of which was expected by me for a vehicle with such a low odometer reading. Obviously going to the dealer would be ridiculously expensive. That's where Ray comes in. Excellent work done at a fair price. He's my go to guy from here on out. His knowledge is vast. His skills are superior. I cannot sing his praises enough. All the work I needed was done for less than the cost of just one of the repairs at the dealer. My family and I have been taking our cars to Rays for the last 25 years and have yet to be disappointed! The owner is the most upright honest mechanic you'll ever meet that is so knowledgeable about cars, its unbelievable! Heres a quick story about how good this guy is: Back in the 90's my family was looking to get my sister a car and found a used mustang. They took it to Rays so he can inspect it and see if there is anything wrong. He told us that the car is ok for very temporary use, but in about 2-3 years its going to break down. We were like - really?! This guy is predicting 2-3 years from now??? lol WELL, he was spot on!!! Literally two and a half years later the car went down the drain! It was one mechanical issue after the next after the next. It was so ridiculous. Lets just say we were regretting not listening to his advise. The owner of this place is awesome! For stupid little things here and there (oil change, etc) I might take my car to a mechanic that's near my house. For legit work though, I will bring all my cars to Ray's. He is probably the best mechanic in Southern California. He is straight up. He usually doesn't charge you anything to try to diagnose the problem. And he always fixes the car the first time around. My family has been going to him for over 20 years and even when I occasionally try to shop around, ray is always 30 to 40 percent cheaper than any other mechanic. He only uses original parts in the car and still comes in that cheap. The guy has more certifications and awards all over his wall than I have seen anywhere else. My brakes needed work so I took my car into Ray's this week. The job was done and done well. Additionally, my car had been making this really annoying sound for about a year. I had taken it into several places including the dealership and whereas they tweaked it and the car showed some improvement, it would just go back to making that sound. Well, Ray's took care of it. The work that needed to be done was not cheap, yet the price was fair (especially considering what other places wanted to charge) and now I do not have to go into denial by cranking up the radio in my car to not hear that sound. Huge thanks to Ray for helping me out back in October. I was house sitting in the area and my breaks were totally shot. Ray was responsive, attentive and patient with all my questions. He explained what he thought needed to happen with my car but didn't make me feel pressured to choose his shop. He was thorough and helped catch a potentially dangerous problem with my timing belt. Again, he answered all my questions and left it up to me whether I wanted to proceed or go somewhere else.
