I have excellent insurance that fully covers implants, which I disclosed from the start. What should have been a straightforward process became months of frustration, delays, and what felt like intentional efforts to circumvent my insurance. At the consultation, they charged a fee, examined the issue, and provided a list of codes with estimated costs. When we insisted on using insurance and requested pre-approval, the staff (including Wendy) pushed back aggressively. They repeatedly claimed our insurance "doesn't cover implants" and tried various tactics to steer us toward self-pay. We had to call weekly because they kept delaying submission of the pre-approval paperwork. Only after nonstop persistence did they finally send it. Insurance approved the main procedure as expected. Then they added two new codes that were not on the original estimate. On their initial list, those two codes were priced at around $180 each. Once insurance did not cover them, the office demanded $1,100 for each of them. When my wife questioned the huge increase and referenced the original estimate, Wendy tried to make her feel bad about wanting to pay only what was originally quoted. Wendy explained that those prices were "before insurance got involved," and if insurance was going to "lower one procedure," they would simply increase the ones insurance didn't cover "to make up the loss." She also stated that the insurance was "low-balling us" and that they "have to make our money in full somehow." Dr. Salo reportedly needed to "review the estimate" to decide if it was even "worth it for him" to proceed given the insurance involvement. If you feel insurance is making you lose money, why be in-network with them at all? Why put patients in the middle of this hate relationship with their own insurance? This is unacceptable. Why participate in insurance networks if the practice is going to fight patients who use their benefits, add surprise charges after approval, and openly adjust prices to compensate for negotiated rates? The entire process involved constant obstacles, wasted months of time, ongoing pain, and significant stress. It felt like a bait-and-switch: using insurance acceptance to attract patients, only to create hurdles and maximize revenue regardless. I strongly recommend avoiding Select Dental Group and Dr. Dean Salo for implants or any major work if you have insurance. Look for a transparent practice that honors their network agreements and works with patients instead of against them. This was one of the most unethical dental experiences I've encountered. Unless you are paying out of pocket anyway and love paying the maximum there is for each procedure without questioning any statement or cost, then they will love you and pamper you and Wendy will be happy with you for being a good obedient patient. Apparently we were just too cheap for her liking -- as if money grows on trees and she herself would happily pay those inflated prices without blinking.

The staff have always been friendly and courteous, but back around 2023-2024 it felt sometimes like this came at the cost of service and speed; there were several times that I would check in at my appointed time, but not be taken back until 30 minutes later, and then STILL not see the practitioner for another 45-60 minutes after that. However, over the last year those have all seemed to improve greatly. My last few appointments were either taken care of swiftly - or, in cases where they were overwhelmed or running too far behind, they were quick to discuss with me about alternatives and reschedule as needed rather than leave me waiting. My own appointment today involved an additional procedure on top of the routine cleaning, but the entire process (as well as X-Rays) were done in just under 2 hours. This place has been my go-to for dental checkups and work for well over a decade now, through both the good and the bad on both sides... and right now, I can say with confidence that it's sitting on the good side of service and efficiency.

Oh my god, there are so many issues to address regarding this location!…read more 1. NO SIGNAGE FACTOR: This business is situated near a strip mall, but not directly inside it. It was incredibly difficult to find because there is absolutely no signage anywhere on the premises. I had to call their 1-800 toll-free number just to learn they were located behind the 7-Eleven. Initially, I thought I had the wrong address and almost left. Based on what followed, I absolutely should have left in the first place. 2. ANNOYING FACTOR: I scheduled my appointment for today, July 30, 2026. Before today, I received multiple text messages and phone calls asking me to confirm, even though I had already confirmed days in advance. Apparently, their staff does not monitor the text message system and relies only on calls. When I called to point out this redundancy, the receptionist dismissively replied, "Sir, I have no control over the text messages." This interaction was both highly annoying and demonstrated a severe lack of competence. 3. OBLIVIOUS FACTOR: Upon entering, I received zero acknowledgment from the staff, despite five or six employees standing around chatting. A small sign instructed patients to scan a Quick Response (QR) code to register. I completed this and waited patiently. Again, no one acknowledged me or provided an estimated wait time. After 17 minutes, I stated my name and appointment time, and asked how long the wait would be. All six employees suddenly stopped talking and stared at me. A receptionist then casually mentioned it would be a "short wait" and that I had additional paperwork to complete. This was an unwelcome surprise, as I had already filled out the online forms, and no one had mentioned additional paperwork during our multiple phone calls. This meant my wait would extend well beyond the 17 minutes I had already lost. At this point, the staff seemed utterly incompetent, annoying, and oblivious. 4. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE FACTOR: I repeated my question regarding the exact wait time, and they estimated 10 minutes. I told them, "Okay, I can wait for 10 minutes if it is truly going to be 10 minutes; otherwise, I think I will reschedule." The receptionist immediately responded that I could certainly reschedule if I preferred, making no effort to retain my appointment. I thought about it for a millisecond before replying, "Okay, I will reschedule. Thank you," and walked out. This is exactly what happens when a business becomes complacent and stops caring for its bread and butter: the patients. I wish this business good luck, because they are going to need it. I highly recommend this place ONLY if you want to be completely frustrated, thoroughly annoyed, and have your time entirely wasted.

The staff at Dentist of Torrance has gone above and beyond to help my visits feel less daunting. I had a great first impression over the phone when I scheduled my initial visit. A few weeks later I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed, and I couldn't be more grateful for the amazing team here. From start to finish, everyone made me feel comfortable, informed, and well cared for. Ana and Jacky at the front desk were always so kind and welcoming--they answered all my calls, greeted me with a smile every time, and helped with all my intake paperwork. Yesenia made the financial side of everything clear and stress-free, which I really appreciated. Marcie took my initial X-rays and was very attentive, even acknowledging when I was in pain and making me feel heard.
