OK this is a long review but bear with me. I came to visit a friend on the island- but she had to work most of the time I was there- and I love hiking so I was bummed that I might not have anyone to do this with while visiting.... but I decided to do a google search and I was so excited to learn about this customized tour. Boy did it exceed my expectations! We did the Olomana Trail and it was the most amazing hike I have ever done. I can't even begin to describe how amazing the views were and Shane knew exactly what I was looking for because this hike was so challenging (which I asked for!) and so interesting to do (especially bouldering up some of the steeper parts)! It was a dream! However if you're looking for something more intermediate or beginner level he's got so much knowledge about those kinds of trails too. Totally depends on what you want- which is the best part! He also knew a lot about the history of the island and had really interesting stories to share- I loved learning about the wildlife and about the best places to visit next time I come! We ended the day doing some paddleboarding out to a smaller island and once we got there we tried some snorkeling (but since I'm not super comfortable swimming in the ocean skipped that and instead did some cliff diving) The cliff dive was terrifying but exactly the kind of stuff I was looking to do! It was amazing... The tour was definitely one of the best experiences of my life and Shane was so thoughtful and cool about making sure you had the full experience. My only regret is that I didn't practice my swimming enough before I came to do the snorkeling. Although I did still get to do some easy surfing along the north shore the day before so that was perfect. I can't stress this enough- you will not regret booking him for the day. You'll actually end up wanting to do another one with him if you decide, like me, that you need to come back! haha It was absolutely incredible. THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST TOURS I HAVE EVER TAKEN!!! Being that this was my first trip to Oahu, I wanted to ensure that I got the best perspective of the Island. After exchanging several e-mails with Shane I can't tell you what a great feeling I had. I chose the customized adventure tour. (Imagine that! Finally a private tour customized to your likes and abilities!!!) I explained to him that I love to hike, the more strenuous the better. I also explained that my husband doesn't like to hike but will compromise as long as there is a waterfall or swimming hole involved. I also explained that we really wanted to see things most tourists don't get to see. Shane responded to me that he was going to make this the best day of our trip and to that I told him that I would leave it all in his hands. All I can say was boy did he deliver! The day before the tour I threw Shane a little curve ball. I texted him to tell him about the hike we had done that day. I was a little worried because the only people we ran into were a couple locals and I thought maybe it might have been one of the hikes he was planning for us. Turns out it was! And despite me only texting him the night before he was totally ready with a plan B. We saw huge waterfalls and beautiful vistas. We went swimming in a private swimming hole. We saw ancient ruins, got a little history lesson and went snorkeling in one of the coolest snorkel spots I have ever been. We swam with a huge turtle, we explored a cave and we ate an amazing lunch, made from all local ingredients, beside a beautiful stream. After this inspiring and exhausting day, Shane was also kind enough to offer us advice and suggestions as to what to do for the rest of our trip. He also took pictures during the entire tour, even underwater and then e-mailed them to us when we got home. If you enjoy adventure and a little physical activity I cannot recommend this tour enough. I just returned from a family trip to Hawaii, and while we don't typically write reviews, the tour we had with Shane was so amazing that we felt absolutely compelled to! A family of four, we wanted to experience the island's natural beauty; however, while active, we don't have much experience with hiking. Shane customized the tour to our ability level, taking us on a gorgeous hike to a waterfall that challenged our preconceptions of what we could do. He was also very accommodative of my father's knee problems in planning the route we took. As we did the full day tour, we opted to try stand-up paddling in the afternoon--the super buoyant boards Shane brought made staying standing up much easier than anticipated! And the location Shane took us to was gorgeous, with a fun local beach we went to after paddling in a gentle river. The full day tour also included lunch, which was great--tons of options from a local cafe/catering company, including some vegetarian choices, and he also accommodated a special request for a plainer sandwich for my brother. He took us to pretty botanical gardens to picnic for lunch. Shane also included a few interesting lookout points throughout the day--it was obvious how much care and detail he put into planning the itinerary, which came across from the very first e-mail correspondence. And it was clear that he wanted to make sure we got the experience we wanted. Our tour with Shane was our first day, and it remained the highlight of our trip throughout--none of the other tours lived up! We would recommend it to anyone! read more

Shane was a fabulous tour guide in every way. We were very last-minute about figuring out that we would have time for a hike, but he found us some time anyway. We described what we wanted -- a reasonably intense hike -- and he took us on the perfect adventure. He picked us up from our hotel exactly on time and drove us out to the trailhead. It was drizzling, but he had ponchos for us. I was a bit concerned that the trail would be too short -- at three miles -- for us, but the steep slope and the pervasive mud -- it had been raining off and on for days -- easily made up for the distance. We picked our way down the steep, muddy, slippery trail, entertained and enlightened by Shane's encyclopedic knowledge of Hawaii's flora, fauna, and history. At the bottom, the true reward -- a beautful waterfall that fed three connected pools, complete with a rope swing! We had to rapel down a short cliff to get there (and then again later barefoot after swimming!) which was the perfect culmination of our hike. The way back up was easier, but still great fun. Then, on the drive back to our hotel, Shane stopped off at an off-the-beaten track ruin of a centuries-old Hawaian palace. Fascinating place, and Shane's recounting of the place's history brought it all to life. We would absolutely hire Shane again! read more

Wow!! What an amazing day we had. Words are hard to describe the wonderful adventure Shane planned for my wife and I. I had the idea of exploring the island but I was not sure how and where to go. I found Shane's website\yelp reviews and I emailed him some ideas of what we would like to do. Within a few hours I had a response back from Shane with suggestions and within 24 hours we had our trip planned. Shane did a great job of putting together a full day of memories that will be with us forever! We started our day at the Pali lookout and wow what a view. We hiked to Likeke Waterfalls that were fantastic, took a break and had an amazing lunch in the Botanical Gardens. After lunch we set out to see WWII pillboxes (Camp Heeia Pillbox) that offered an unforgettable view of the island. We ended the day with a relaxing paddle in the Mauna Lua Bay. Shane is an outstanding guide and it is very obvious that he loves what he does. He took great care to make sure this day was the most unforgettable day of our vacation!! Even if you've visited Oahu before you should go to Adventure Tours Hawaii's website and check out all of the options available! You won't be disappointed and you will be glad you didn't miss out on such a great opportunity while visiting Oahu! Shane planned an awesome day of adventures for my boyfriend and I. We did stand up paddle boarding to Moku Nui Island and saw a Hawaiian monk seal sun bathing on the beach. We also snorkeled and saw Hawaiian green sea turtles. At lunch, he took us for some traditional Hawaiian food at the Waiahole Poi Factory. After lunch, we went hiking and saw Oahu's tallest waterfall. Shane shared his knowledge throughout the day and answered all of our questions with a smile. He was very professional and friendly. He even gave us ideas of what to do for the remainder of our trip. Me and my girlfriend went on a snorkeling tour with Shane and after all the positive reviews I was obviously waiting for a good tour but a bit skeptical since when one observes wild life you can never really be sure how's it gonna go or what you're gonna see. Let me tell you, we saw plenty and shane was so knowledgeable of the area that I hardly had to put my head out of the water. I just followed Shane's fins and enjoyed the beautiful turtles and company. He was always sensible and aware to what was happening with us but without really interfering if it wasn't necessary. I really appreciated that. He really felt how far he could "push us" or not and he catered to that perfectly. The truth is that half way through the tour I didn't even feel I was having one. It felt I was snorkeling with a buddy that lives in Hawaii and I was just visiting. I think that is the best testament to how good it was. I have nothing to compare it too, but I can tell you it was one of the highlights of my trip to this amazing pacific islands. Do not hesitate a second, go ahead and book it. read more

This was the probably the highlight of our honeymoon, we had such an awesome experience doing this, we very highly recommend it! We went hiking to waterfalls, went swimming in some streams and natural pools, went snorkeling in the ocean, saw some beaches and sea cliff formations (geyser and the "spitting cave")... Oh and a little stop at kona brewing at our request! This is run by a younger guy who will cater to your experience depending on what you can do or want to do. He was very nice and a great knowledgeable guide. You can tell his passion for nature and really enjoys the activities. I would definitely do this again if or when I come back. We do not normally hike so he took us to some if the easier places, but if you are a serious hiker I bet you could not find a better guide if you really wanted to explore. Also he takes GoPro videos and pictures (even underwater) and will send them to you later. In any case, highly recommended, will tell everyone I know about it who plans to go to Oahu! read more

What can I say that hasn't been said in other reviews. This was by far our best day and best tour. It was like spending a day on the island with a close friend or family member doing all the things you enjoy. Shane made us feel very comfortable and went out of his way to make sure the day was unforgettable. I have never written a review before but had to so that others get the same experience we did. We are very happy we read all the positive comments when doing our research and booked with Shane. We went hiking, snorkelling, saw some beautiful local spots and finished the day paddle boarding. We never felt rushed and Shane was prepared all around and flexible if we wanted to change anything. He even spent time putting together information for us for the next day once he knew we were going to the North Shore, he really enjoys sharing the island with others. My husband and I booked a tour with Shane whilst staying in Waikiki. We looked at various other tours including larger group tours that were slightly cheaper, however they are very restrictive as to what you see, how long you are there etc. Shane was great, he asked us what we liked and what we wanted to see and tailored the whole day to meet our needs. Not only did we see a huge amount of the island, Shane was informative and really went above and beyond to make sure we hit a variety of great spots at great times. The weather was cloudy and rainy with some sunshine but Shane kept an eye out on the weather and adjusted the plan where necessary to get the best out of our day. It was a highlight of our trip. Shane is a great guy and we would definitely recommend doing a tour with him! A private tour is a great way to see what you want to see and get one on one information and time to ask questions. This is absolutely the best way to see the island. Shane is the best tour guide you could hope for, he is knowledgeable and he plans your day exactly the way you want it. We are not the most adventurous people, we just wanted a personal tour of some of the sights around the island and that is exactly what we got. We picked 5-6 places that we wanted to see and that's where we went, along with a few more that Shane recommended, we got fantastic views of the North Shore that you will never get on a tour bus! The lunch Shane provided was excellent, my compliments to the chef. If you want to see the island your way and not have to put up with a huge tour group in a smelly tour bus, this is the tour for you! "Best adventures ever! I used Shane with Adventure Tours Hawaii for a guide around the island of Oahu and I got to see a lot of the hidden gems that not the typical tourist would have been able to see. He truly knows his island, is very informative of the ancient Hawaiian history, and knows his fauna as well. One of my favorite adventures was paddle boarding up the Kahana Bay River. We started at the Kahana Bay Beach Park and got some ocean bay paddle boarding in, then went up the river mouth through some unbelievable scenery, got to paddle through some jungle tunnels, and ended it with a picnic at the Huilua Fish Ponds where we got a history lesson on how the ancient Hawaiians captured fish for the village. If you're in Hawaii, if you want an adventure, you've found the people who will give it to you! My guide Shane was as personable as it gets, and with his vast knowledge of the island he is sure to take you far off the beaten path. I'm not sure what was better, the incredible afternoon of Stand Up Padding down the Halwia river complete with plenty of sea turtle (Honu as Shane taught me) sightings, or the epic hours of snorkeling along the North shore with the countless creates living amongst the reefs. I'm glad I didn't have to choose between them, my only regret if that i didn't have time for a hike, but after the experience I had, it's a guarantee that I'll be back for another adventure with Shane and the good people at Adventure Tours Hawaii. Our adventure day with Shane was incredible!! My husband, college-age daughter and I had suggested a few things for the day, but he far exceeded our expectations! We hiked to two waterfalls (one of which was through a bamboo forest ..... a first for all of us), jumped off a cliff, viewed breathtaking scenery from a couple of overlooks, snorkeled at an amazing beach, ate a great picnic lunch planned by Shane in the botanical garden, drank coffee (!!) and watched the sun set while capturing some great photos. Pretty perfect day I would say! Shane is fun and easy company, and is great about sharing his extensive knowledge of the island ......... about the people, the food, the industry, the land, the culture. I actually stayed at Shane and his lovely wife's house in Haleiwa, Oahu when I visited Hawaii for the first time. And Shane turned out to be not only a good host but also a great tour guide, what a surprise! My friend and I had a wonderful day hiking up the mountain, showering underneath a waterfall, surfing and stand-up peddling. I do not swim and can get quite scared when I feel carried away by the waves, so I had my concerns when I tried out the surfing. Man, am I glad that I decided to try! I surfed beautifully (to my standard), saw amazing fish and even spotted a green turtle! I would'n have been able to do all this without Shane's assuring coach! This tour is really the best thing you can do in Oahu - I can't recommend it enough! We chose the ultimate tour, and it was amazing! We went on a hike, did some paddleboarding, saw seaturtles on the beach, saw some landscapes, went to a super cool beach.. the day was packed! And it never felt long either - we were having such a great time. Shane is awesome, laid back and just having a good time with us! It felt like we were with a friend. Plus Shane took some pictures throughout the day and sent them to us later - it was awesome to have all those pictures without having to worry about taking them ourselves! This is as good as it gets- we spent almost 2 full days with Shane, and it does not get any better than that; his knowledge of Hawaiian history is incredible; our customized tours were divine, from the hikes, watching the surfers, lunch in a beautiful ( and no crowds) plumeria garden, snorkeling, to the drive from spot to spot- whenever possible Shane took us off the beaten path, and always had a story to tell. Cannot wait to go back and do some more exploring with him - Shane will show you that there is a lot more to Oahu than Waikiki beach.
