I want to preface this review by saying that we did not stay overnight in a room at The Greenbrier,…read morebut we did spend most of the day there, and I'm glad we did. When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

The cheapest daily rack rate on a weekday is a whopping $400+/night, not including all their BS fees: $49 daily resort fee per room and 9.75% Historic Preservation Fund, 6% sales tax. SO NOT WORTH IT! Seriously, I get keeping the iconic Draper theme, but you gotta upkeep everything to warrant that price! I stayed here for 3 nights for a conference, and had multiple interactions with staff from calling to make reservations for activities, the bunker tour, dinner at the main dining room, bowling and the conference room facilities. Customer service ranged here from very nice, cheerful and helpful to unaccommodating, aloof, and just plain rude. When asked questions about the facility or amenities, the staff would often give me blank stares or just shrug and say they didn't know. I was checked in by a trainee who did not give any direction on how to get to my room in the BOONIES (Copeland Hills) and we drove around aimlessly until we gave up and went back to valet to get directions. When I asked if I could be in the main hotel with my coworker at check in, another snooty employee (senior or the trainer, I dunno) blatantly said "no, your group is assigned to the cottages", which was 100% a lie because my coworker simultaneously checked in with another trainee and was given a room in the main hotel. The next day, a second coworker was also given a room in the main hotel. They both complained their rooms were creepy feeling, dirty and in need of some major renovations. So I guess depending on how you look at it, I had it better since my cottage in the boonies wasn't as old and was in pretty good shape. The wait staff at the conference was too efficient! I left my untouched dessert literally for a few minutes at my seat and when I returned it was gone! My fiancé did the bunker tour and the bourbon tasting. He was the only one at the bourbon tasting at 5:00pm and no one showed up for the 6:00pm either. At the end, he was given a non itemized bill for $88 (the base price was $65) and then he tipped on top of the $88 thinking that was the base rate! Clearly the astronomical service fees were already embedded in there. Throughout our stay, we wondered where everyone was. Despite being reservation only, the main dining room was at best 25% full when we were there on a Friday night. Everywhere we went: basically empty. The many random sitting rooms, the restaurants, the casino, the bowling alley, indoor pool, the bars. The only activity that had a decent amount of people was the bunker tour. There were many private events we saw set up everywhere though, and our conference alone was about 300. So maybe that's their thing. My coworkers had mini fridges in their room in the main hotel, my room in the cottages did not. My coworker called room service for ice (there are no self service ice machines) and it was delivered 2 hours later when she was sleeping. The room service delivery fee is $5 for the main hotel, but $20 for my cottage in the boonies. Why do I have to pay 4x in delivery fees when I asked to be in the main hotel to begin with? Ridiculous. The Greenbrier is old and busted and riding on the "historic" factor to draw in guests. If I stayed here for leisure and paid for this out of my own pocket, I would be even more pissed.

This little casino just off from Charleston, West Virginia? Best. Single. Casino. Experience. Of. My. Life. No, it isn't the biggest casino. No, it isn't the fanciest. The décor has an older, darker feel with warm tones, and some people might describe it as a little worn. I'd describe it as comfortable enough to accidentally spend your mortgage payment in. My buddy Brett and I sat down expecting to kill an hour before continuing our drive to Pittsburgh. Three hours later... ...we were still there laughing our heads off. The blackjack tables were outstanding. The players actually knew how to play, which meant no endless debates over whether to hit a 17 or split tens. The games moved at a great pace, everyone was having fun, and despite only walking away about $40 ahead, I honestly couldn't have cared less. In fact, I probably tipped away more than I won. Worth every dollar. Then there was Dakota. Dakota isn't just the best blackjack dealer I met on this trip... He's one of the most entertaining dealers I've ever played with. Somewhere between doubling down and busting the table, we learned he plays bass for the West Virginia metal band Dismember the Outcome. By then the table had become less of a blackjack game and more of a comedy club. We laughed so hard that I genuinely forgot I was gambling. That has never happened before. And then there was the pit boss. I think his name was Dave. Imagine a sharply dressed casino supervisor making sure every blackjack payout is correct...then casually jumping into a conversation about the Lamb of God concert he had attended. That's when I realized this place was different. Behind every suit was somebody you'd happily have a beer with. Speaking of beer... Whoever told me drinking is West Virginia's state sport may have been onto something. Because the real MVP of the afternoon was our cocktail waitress. At one point Brett and I had become just intoxicated enough to loudly yell across the casino for another well vodka shot and Diet Coke. Classy? Absolutely not. Professional? Definitely not. Her response? Without missing a beat she smiled across the casino floor and said, "I gotcha, hun." I swear she covered fifty yards faster than a wide receiver running a post route. By the time I blinked, the drinks were already sitting in front of us. There are Southern belles... ...and then there are Southern cathedral belles. She moved through that casino like the patron saint of thirsty blackjack players. If that's what being welcomed through the Pearly Gates feels like, sign me up. And if, through some clerical error upstairs, she's tending bar somewhere a little warmer... ...well, at least I know the cocktail service will be phenomenal. By the time we left, I'd probably spent almost $100 tipping dealers and cocktail staff, and I don't regret a penny of it. Casinos often try to impress you with marble floors, giant chandeliers, and flashy architecture. Mardi Gras Casino impressed me with something much rarer. People. Wonderful dealers. An unforgettable pit boss. Fantastic cocktail service. A table full of smart players. And enough laughter to carry us all the way to Pittsburgh. Five stars without hesitation. We'll be back. And when we do, somebody tell Dakota to shuffle up...we've got another three hours of stories to tell.

Being off the beaten path, it's easy to forget about life in the "real world." It was so quiet and peaceful; you only hear the sounds and see the sights of nature that have been lost in far too many places. I stayed in the Farmhouse Inn, the main house of the resort. It was clean, tastefully designed and well-furnished. I was the only one staying in this space, so again, it was very quiet. I spent a few hours outside in the evening chatting with a few other guests who were staying on the grounds. We sat out on the patio area during this time, and even decided to have our dinner there, as the weather was beautiful. While we ate, several deer payed a visit to the grounds to get dinner for themselves. Speaking of dinner, it was fantastic. I had a fresh salad, that I can only assume came from the organic garden on the grounds. Additionally, I had a vegetable lasagna and finished my meal with some delicious apple cake. Since I was leaving early the next morning for work, a breakfast basket was prepared for me with a variety of baked goods, orange juice, fruit, and a serving of the best baked oatmeal I ever had. Gail and Gary, the owners, were fantastic as well. They were extremely helpful from booking through my checkout. There were several emails sent to me prior to my visit with all the directions and information I needed to know for my arrival. Since I was arriving during their off hours, they prepared a binder for me that got me to my room and settled in until we had a chance to meet later in the evening. If you are interested in connecting with the outside world during your stay, cell service is spotty. I was told that only some cell service work there. However, there is a public phone that anyone can access if needed at no cost. In addition, the Farmhouse Inn has wifi. I don't believe this is true for all the outer houses. But since you come by the Farmhouse for meals, and any other time you want to, it shouldn't be an inconvenience. Overall, I have absolutely no complaints. I would HIGHLY reccomend this place if you're in the area.

She is an exceptional waitress and make sure her customers are happy and meets the needs of their dining experience. The front desk seem to be unsure about any of our concerns regarding the phone not working the TV literally being 14 inches to corner and diameter in the bedroom. If you are like my husband and I we have to have the TV on to fall asleep at night and this caused a great deal of issues. The TV was so tiny. I am a germaphobic. to the point that I do not shower, barefoot or sleep on the sheets or blanket provided by the resort, hotel, motel and breakfast, etc. at this resort I felt completely comfortable walking around barefoot taking a shower barefoot and I even slept in the sheets that we're already on the bed even though we brought our own to put on the bed just in case the only changes we made is we took the beautiful quilt off the bed and use our blanket that we brought from home and that's only because from experience the quilts don't always get laundered every time the place is cleaned. Not to say that this does not happen at this resort but in past experiences, this has happened at other resorts hotels/motels so we just play on the safe side if you are a germaphobe you will feel quite at home there is no dishwasher in the ERICA cabin and there is no Wi-Fi at the ERICA cabin. I did utilize the washer and dryer to wash a blanket and it worked perfectly. They provided laundry detergent, fabric softener, and they had little bottles of shampoo and conditioner for use when showering One thing I do want to mention is that if you rent the ERICA cabin, you do have to carry all your belongings across a fairly long bridge to get to your cabin. The cabin is not accessible to motor vehicles. as far as the restaurant is concerned, we did not have a single bad meal. Everything was excellent but it was $20-$30 a plate depending on what you ordered and if you ordered a soda, it was almost 3 dollars Per person they did have a nice gift shop where you could buy shirts and different souvenirs and of course, if you are a fly fisherman, this is a fly fisherman's Paradise. We did not go there to fish. It was nice and relaxing to just stand there and watch the trout swim in the water overall I do recommend this place and I would go back again. It was a wonderful getaway for the weekend just to forget about everything that is going on in your present life and stress that you deal with daily. I completely forgot about all that while we were there what a wonderful experience!!
