The first rule of Folkes Home Services is: nobody at Folkes Home Services knows what they're doing…read more The second rule of Folkes Home Services is: they will never, ever call you back. It's January. My heater dies. So I call Folkes. They send a technician. This technician has the experience level of someone who just learned that furnaces exist. He gets on his phone. For an hour. One full hour listening to a stranger describe your broken heater to another stranger who apparently has the knowledge this stranger was supposed to arrive with. "It's your propane line," he says. I call the propane company. "Folkes always blames us," they say. "It's never us." But they check it out. It's not them. It was never them. So Folkes sends another technician. This one also looks like he was recently introduced to the concept of HVAC. You try to explain the problem and he says (out loud, to a customer, in a house with no heat) "I'm listening, I'm just very tired." The second technician calls the first technician, on speakerphone. They try to fix it together. At one point the first technician is singing. Singing a song, on speaker, in my freezing house. The second technician diagnoses the problem as the pump. Folkes doesn't have the pump. They don't know when they'll have the pump. They'll keep me posted. They do not keep me posted. This is the part where you realize that "we'll keep you posted" is just something people say, like "your call is important to us." It's verbal wallpaper. It means nothing. I wait a few days. I lose patience. I order the part myself. It arrives the next day. I hire a different company to install it. Turns out the pump was fine. So now I've paid Folkes to not fix my heater, blame my propane company, sing in the basement, have me spend $400 on an unneeded part, and disappear. Somewhere right now a Folkes technician is on the phone with another Folkes technician, and neither of them is calling you. One star. And I want you to know that star cost me something.

I shared that I was having low water flow in my toilet as well and thus experiencing frequent clogs. I'd ask if they can both unclog the toilet and to evaluate my toilet to see what the problem is. When I called, they gave a quote for 20 mins which was way faster than I expected! Nevertheless, they were late, taking an hour to come. That alone isn't the problem but without clear communication, it makes planning difficult. He did text that he was 18 mins away, 20 mins into the wait. And by that time, he was 20 mins late from that estimate. He came into my apt and QUICKLY fixed the clog with a drain auger (?). It seriously took 1 minute. I asked him if he could then take a look at my toilet as well to see WHY I keep having this problem. He takes one look at it and says you need an ENTIRELY NEW TOILET and quoted me $600. He didn't look at the tank, do any sort of inspection. I said wow that seems extreme to have to replace the whole toilet, you haven't even taken a look. He said he knows these sorts of toilets and that I'd need a new one. I asked him to send me a quote so I could share with my landlord. Never received the quote! He charged me $150! I get that is the service fee but I don't think that's fair for 1 min of work and not even taking the time to inspect the toilet to see what could be wrong with it. Asked another plumber to check out my toilet. They replaced some parts and now it's flushing appropriately. They had much better prices and better professionalism. Please don't waste your money on this company.

I was told that there was another hose that needed to be replaced because it wasn't up to code. I was charged $700 for the replacement hose. The problem was not resolved, and when I called back to inform the plumber that the washing machine was still leaking, I was told to call an appliance tech because they don't repair washing machines. The plumber refused to refund me my money after I had explained that the leak had not been fixed, and the job was not resolved. Now I have to spend more money to have an appliance tech come out and assess the problem, and pay for any repairs. I was taken advantage of, for sure!

Petro was professional, quick and courteous for all of our interactions for many months, although I feel they talked me out of needing any service check ups when I felt my system needed it. And, I was never charged a penny less than the maximum, which didn't seem right. Before my year's contract was up, I talked to Petro about renwal, and I was quoted a rate I felt was not competitive or reflective of actual prices, and was told the service contract rate was increasing significantly. THEN they topped off my tank, just two days before my contract was up. At that point I asked them to put a hold on everything and to charge me the remaining balance on my account, settle up completely and not renew my contract. I was told no problem, the contract wouldn't be renewed. Instead, my auto pay was doubled. I only found out a MONTH later when my checking account was charged. Then a bill came for the new service contract I never agreed to on top of that. They told me this would be fixed, no problem. ANOTHER month later, I was debited the monthly charge again. This time they told me it was MY fault for not turning off Auto pay on my account, which I had already felt was closed/stopped twice in two months. At this point I asked to close the entire account, I want all my money back, I never agreed to renew in the first place. For days their customer retention team called me, repeatedly, with new offers and discounts, after I had already asked to close the account. Sadly, they STILL didn't offer a competitive price, and kept telling me their direct competition was out to cheat me, which is obviously a lie. I demanded my refund again, still confused why it hadn't already been processed. 3 weeks and the refund has STILL not arrived. I was just told it would be ANOTHER 2-3 weeks because they just "approved" it. Why do I have to wait months to get the money refunded that shouldn't have been charged in the first place? I don't think I would ever do business with these guys again.

Then today, the last straw: They just sold me 144 gallons of #2 heating oil in Gardiner, NY and the price per gallon was $5.47. The average price for this area is $3.75 to $4.25 per gallon (look it up, do a search for Avg Prices #2 Heating Oil for your town). They obviously are taking advantage of the "short excursion" in the Middle East. to jack up their prices sky high. Stay away.......I would not even give them 1 star but you cant leave a review with no stars.

I've had a previous experience with Grasshopper Heating & Cooling, as they did install a hot water…read moreheater for us in the past at our old home. We were very satisfied with both the quality of the product and their workmanship, which is why we reached out to them again. This time, however, the experience fell short. We scheduled an appointment for a representative to come out and provide an estimate for a furnace (and potentially a full HVAC system, including central air and a hot water heater). The technician came to our home and gave us only a verbal quote--nothing in writing. As most homeowners know, it would be unwise to move forward without a written estimate, especially when comparing multiple companies. We specifically needed a written estimate as part of a real estate transaction that had already encountered complications. After the appointment, I followed up and spoke with our service contact, Joe B., who assured me he would email the estimate. Unfortunately, we never received anything, and because of the lack of follow-through and documentation, they unfortunately missed the mark this time. As a result, we've decided to move forward with another plumbing and heating company for this project. It's disappointing, especially given our positive experience in the past, but communication and proper documentation are essential, and this time it just didn't happen.
