I don't know why it took me so long to try this place but we finally did and my husband and I were blown away. This is a fusion spot and the flavors were so good! They are known for their golden burrito but we also ordered the nachos and can't wait to try more items next time. It's located in the Cal food garden and there's a window to walk up and order. Service was very friendly and quick! There's outdoor seating and an indoor seating area (greenhouse style with heat lamps and plenty of seating and plants). Parking is just street parking but we were able to find a spot on San Pablo half a block away. Golden burrito (spicy) - you can order steak, chicken, combo (steak and chicken), vegetarian and vegan. We shared the steak burrito and it was so flavorful. The burrito was packed and very filling- comes with two sauces (one sweet chili and I think a creamy yogurt sauce?). The sweet chili sauce with the golden sauce was a nice sweet savory combo if you're into that. Btw the spice level was not spicy enough (they described it as sriracha spicy but it didn't taste like that). I didn't mind since I loved the flavor but my husband said he'd order it again with more spice. Combo Nachos (Medium) - these were absolutely loaded with lots of steak and chicken, drenched in flavorful sauces with shredded cheese. It was a really big portion and we actually had to take most of it home (will throw it in in the air fryer lol). I should have asked if they had some kind of pickled jalapeño because I feel like that would take it to the next level for me. I was on my way to SFO and decided to finally stop by this place after seeing it on social media a while back. I've been curious ever since, especially because I love a good fusion burrito. The fusion aspect seems to come mainly from their "golden sauce" and maybe the meat options?, though I went with a vegetarian burrito. Unfortunately, I found the overall flavor underwhelming. The golden sauce didn't add much it lacked any flavor and was mostly concentrated at the bottom of the burrito. It was also supposed to come with sour cream, but I didn't see or taste any. They offer a choice of 2 additional sauces, and I went with the pink garlic. While it lived up to its name in terms of garlic, it was overwhelming like chewing raw garlic cloves with a kick of heat. There wasn't much balance in the flavor, just intense garlic and heat. I also added fries to the burrito for an extra small up charge, but I only got about 3 maybe 4 individual fries inside. Not worth the extra charge in my opinion. I was initially excited to try more of their menu, but based on this first experience, I'm not sure I'd return. Overall, the food was average at best but should've been great with both individual cuisines bursting with flavor if done right as someone else mentioned. I love this place. I've been going since they were running out of a commerciall kitchen in West Oakland, and am so happy they have a brick and mortar in Berkeley. I haven't been in over a year, but follow them on IG and got a hankering for some while scrolling through my thread. OMG, they have a crunchwrap now and it might be one of my favorite classic snack recreations I've grubbed on. They've also expanded their protein options, and I'm kicking myself for not ordering a shrimp golden burrito (went with chicken & steak, which never disappoints). I'll be coming back for the shrimp burrito, and loaded fries too. We had an iced karak chai, which was yum, and kinda reminded me of raisins. Although heavy on the rice, it was still just a large, heavy item of food still filled with chicken, beans and produce. May I add that this is not a Mexican burrito, per the name, it's Afghani inspired, so the spices are different. The protein seemingly all are marinated in this yellow mild curry-esque spiced sauce that makes the experience different than your typical Mexican burritos/quesadillas. First bite was a unique experience that I had to get used to. My husband went with the steak quesadilla, and similarly this was 2 meals. The space is huge if you're looking to eat outside with plenty of tables. They have a covered, enclosed area as well for these rainy days. The staff is so great, friendly and accomodating. It came with beans, rice, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, and lettuce, and I added fajitas and jalapeños at no cost but you have to ask for them. It has a spicy homemade sauce (golden sauce) that is very flavorful. The chicken is marinated with Afghan styles spices which is what makes this place so unique. The flavor and tenderness of the chicken were something like I'd never had before. My daughter had the steak and it was really good, but the chicken taste was unique. We asked for the hot sauce (salsa?) but received 1 tiny container of sweet chili sauce (?) and 1 tiny container of some sort of sweet creamy curry sauce that was more sweet than hot. The sauces weren't bad, but the sweetness really didn't go with the food. We ordered a burrito a couple of tacos (hard shell). The burrito wasn't bad, but it all tasted of that weird sweet curry sauce. The tacos came out in cold, soft flour tortillas loaded down with sour cream / curry sauce and weirdly cold shredded cheese. Tried to take a bite, and the filling poured out the side in a big sloppy mess that needed a fork (or spoon!) . The crunch wrap is the best!!!! Better than Taco Bell. The ground beef is flavorful and made well with excellent halal meat. The tortilla chips are nothing special but nice to have with the meal. The sauces that come with are really good and go well with the meal and the chips. One thing I wish they had were different kinds of salsas. The fries were good as well and flavorful but a little soggy. Overall this will be my go to place for crunch wraps. Our experience at Afghan Burrito was so good! The folks working here are kind, helpful, and excited about their food. We ordered a chicken golden burrito and a steak burrito bowl salad. All of our questions were patiently answered and overall good vibes. What makes this place different is how the marinade the meat! We waited about 10 minutes for our food to come out. The bff and I were Starving Marvin, and it was hard to wait to take photos. I personally remembered ravaging my half of the salad and burrito in minutes while my friend chatted, lol. The steak and chicken were tender. The golden sauce in the burrito/bowl was deliciously creamy and added a good kick. We really appreciated that the burrito was grilled beautifully. The amount of sauce was perfect and didn't give soggy burrito bottom. They served two hot sauces, one sweet chili (similar to the kind served with egg rolls--I believe not homemade) and a creamy garlic chili sauce that was homemade. We ate up the homemade sauce. After agonizing where to go for dinner, with nothing sounding good, my friend thought of Afghan Burrito and immediately said that he was definitely taking me there because I just had to try it. I had no idea what to expect, but I trusted that it would be good. I ordered a "Golden Burrito," "Afghan Way," steak burrito. This is going to sound ridiculous, and I seriously don't typically use these words to describe food, generally, but this "burrito" was just divine. I was transported to a blissful world in which all that existed was me and an Afghan burrito that was exactly what I didn't know I wanted. The flavor of the beef was mouth-watering. The lettuce on top was fresh. I really enjoyed the way they prepared the tortilla. (The sign said "fried tortilla," but it wasn't the greasy, deep fried situation you might expect. Hard to describe.) The ambience was inviting. Not fancy, but the type of place where I would want to hang out with friends or host a party where everyone was happily chatting. It's all outdoors. The lighting is warm. Each table with chairs has its own pavilion, with generous space and plants between each table for privacy. There is a heated, enclosed area for chilly nights. On top of that, the staff were friendly and caring. If you read their "Story" by the menu, they clearly care about building a community. Alright. I'm just going to say it. The golden steak burrito at Afghan Burrito is the best burrito I have ever had in my life. Immediately after my meal I put it in my top 5. Then during my walk home decided it was probably top 3, and now that I am sitting and writing this and had more time to think about it I am giving it the number one spot. I could eat this everyday. The Golden sauce is so freaking good. Creamy, sweet, salty, and rich which they give you a little side of spiced yogurt for to add some acidity to balance it out. My one gripe is that they have a large, sunny amazing patio and no beer or cocktails to enjoy. Maybe it's not that kind of spot, and that's okay, but what a beautiful space they could be leveraging. 5 stars for the food and service (everyone was very very friendly) read more

I tasted solid base of Spanish style rice with black beans but a total mind blowing golden Afghan flavor with turmeric marinated chicken. If I could give this place a 15/10, I would. There is also seating here inside a glass covered area, but be careful of where you think the door is because I saw someone walk straight into the wall. Employees are super friendly here. Nothing really special. Got a chicken burrito "Afghan Style." Rice and beans weren't particularly flavorful. The cheese was below ambient temperature and was off putting being cold. Ordered without sour cream but they ignored that and order had sour cream. Best thing this place has going for it was the marinade/sauce on the chicken was pretty good and the value was pretty good.
