They are unlicensed. Don't be scammed. Should not be charging above $500 for any service only having a city business license.

We used this company a few times before and with 5-star results. I don't like writing poor reviews and tried to get a reply from the owner since March through the office manager (who has always been kind and responsive). We had a water leak (the water bill was creeping up higher and higher each month), and they were kind enough to refer a leak detection company. Once the leak was found, on our side of the meter, I set up an appointment. The technician showed up on time and estimated about 2 - 3 hours for the repair. Up to that point, everything was going well. After 3 hours, the technician came to the door with a part in his hand and said that he knows what the problem is, had cut out/removed the part, and would go back to the office to see if they had a replacement. After the fact, I checked with two other plumbing companies who said they would never have removed a part, even if it was leaking, without knowing they had a replacement. After almost an hour, he didn't come back, so since it was a few minutes to 5 PM (when the office closes), I called, and they let me know that they had a similar issue with a homeowner, and that part was super hard to find. They had called around and could not find it and....sorry. They said they couldn't do anything for me. I had a hole out by the sidewalk dug out with no connection to the water main and no solution. They didn't offer to hook up a temporary fix (which I found out later is possible), and they didn't try to order the part (I found what was needed online but with a 2-week wait) and come back to repair it. They did recommend Roto-Rooter and they came out, couldn't believe we were left in that situation, but made the repair (not using a similar part that was cut out but a workaround that worked well). Of course, emergency service cost a lot of money ($1600) for a repair that had been estimated originally closer to $800 - $900, parts included. After that initial follow-up phone call in late February, I did email After Hours several times, saying I didn't want to write a bad review and just wanted an explanation for what happened but was told the owner was out of town and would get back to me when he could. Now, almost four months after the incident, I am writing this review. Again, they did a great job before, but cutting out a part without knowing there was a replacement and leaving us with no water to the house and no solution miffed the other two plumbers I contacted. Would still love to hear from the owner to explain.

Our washing machine was not draining fast enough to prevent spilling onto our floor, so we called to have it snaked. The serviceman then looked at out kitchen sink, which was not draining improperly, and said it was a mess and he could see standing water. He also told us that he could access a pipe just outside our laundry room, cut a hole and install a clean out juncture to prevent similar issues in the future. His estimate for this service, after several minutes outside in his truck was $2,200! When I refused, he told my husband that one service could not be done without the other. I said no again and told my husband to get another estimate. The service rep then came back with an estimate to simply snake the laundry and kitchen drains-- $492. Keep in mind, a few minutes earlier we were informed we needed both services. I again said no and at that point voiced my feeling uncomfortable with the entire process. We then got a referral from a trusted service person, and had a plumber in the house the same day who simply snaked the laundry drain, charging $250.00. This plumber checked his work by running water through the laundry drain. I have done several loads of laundry since then, and it works fine. We have no issues with the kitchen sink, where we regularly run a dishwasher. The other plumber told us it would be helpful to create a clean out valve on the exposed pipe that is outside, but there was no hurry to do so. We will not be calling the Mr. Rooter service again. I had to wonder if the service man thought we were loaded and raised the prices because of our upscale cars parked outside and remodeled kitchen with high end appliances and granite counters.

Apparently a new family that owns the Mr Rooter franchise in Santa Cruz recently took over Mr Rooter in the Monterey area; they have excellent reviews in Santa Cruz (check them out), and the less-great reviews for the business in Monterey are based on prior ownership. Customer service was outstanding, some of the best I've ever experienced: they were extremely responsive, helpful, and friendly. The plumber who showed up was also great: capable, friendly, and patient. My caveat takes a little explaining: I have a fairly new tank water heater barely out of warranty (based on the installation date of the prior unit it replaced). The manufacturer offered a cost-free valve and pilot assembly replacement as a goodwill gesture. I got a quote from a different, highly regarded local plumbing business on the phone for the labor cost to install the new valve. I told Mr. Rooter that, and they said if I wanted a quote from them, I needed their plumber to do a no-obligation in-person estimate, which was fine with me. When the plumber showed up, he indicated there was actually a substantial charge for the estimate, as a credit to be applied to any work done. I decided to proceed. Further, the plumber recommended a full inspection and cleaning of the water heater, which more than doubled the cost of the work. After some discussion because I was shocked by the amount, I decided to proceed, which I think was a mistake. As best I can tell, the additional work literally involved just a couple minutes of shop vaccing a little build-up off the burner assembly; everything else the plumber did would have been part of replacing the valve and pilot assembly at less than half the price. Further, the plumber noticed the cold water shutoff valve for the water heater wasn't fully shutting off, which would have been an easy/quick/cheap replacement while he was onsite, but instead decided to quote me for a costly return visit to address that. Frankly, given what I paid for the whole job, I think this should have either been included in the job or offered at a very modest upcharge. (Separately, apparently the house water shutoff valve also needs replacement; that's appropriately a wholly separate job.) Given how much I liked everyone involved, it pains me a little to write these more negative parts of the review. And I've decided to still give a pretty strong overall rating, though anyone who reads this can decide how to weight the various parts of the review.

My Flume kicked up an alert that I had a water leak, and sadly after much personal elimination, I realized it was between the house and the water meter. For most people, this would be a blessing, but for us, it meant around 300 ft of mains pipe that turned out was buried under the drive. I found the leak detection specialists who spent a few sessions narrowing down the root cause by eliminating all alternatives, and then set about pinpointing. Once done, they tapped Chase on the shoulder and he came up to sketch out the steps we needed to take. Shore up the anomalies at the meter then excavate the pipe, fix and backfill. I think we saw 2 or three of his crews and tbh they were all really nice people... My only frustration is my retro game tee was correctly spotted and in a weak moment I stupidly said I'd get chase one if he gets me sorted :-) .. Well he did and it arrives in a few days so I'll be texting you Chase ! I think we were in the top 2% on a scale of difficulty finding the leak as it was a small leak .22Gal/min, well buried and under Asphalt. Its not a quick thing to fix as we were technically without running water to the house for around 2 weeks ( I cannot articulate how painfully stressful it was or how little fun it was to manually turn on and off the mains to fill the toilets and sinks for the day ahead as a military maneuver with my wife and I). I hate spending money but with he level of professionalism from both the Leak detection crew and Clifton it eased my wallet pain and they just delivered at a level that reassured us we were in the right hands ! I dont think Clifton come cheap but they deliver and I have a goto plumber now !... thank you ...
