NEVER AGAIN will my family and I shop at this store. First of all it is filled with used/ previously owned merchandise and it is way too expensive. It's almost like paying full price. This is what happened the last time we shopped there about a year and a half ago.... Our family was in the store to look around. My daughter found a previously owned Louis Vuitton purse ( which they claimed was real) which she fell in love with. Her birthday had just passed and my husband thought that it would be cute to by her her first Louis to celebrate. A new purse just like it would have cost a little over $1000.00. They were selling this purse for $400.00. I thought that it was an extravagant purchase , but he loves to spoil us ,so I thought why not? We have come to find out that the purse is a "knock off" a "phony"! We were sold a purse that was used, that brand new, we could have purchased for as low as $50. WE WERE HAD!!!!! My husband contacted the owner and went into the store to discuss the situation with him. He knew that they had sold us the purse, he acknowledged that the purse was phony and he also said that there was nothing that he could do for us. BUYERS BEWARE!!!!! So I'm a little bit torn....If you are looking for brand name goods (Chanel, Manolo, etc) then you can definitely find them there. Things are REALLY expensive ($250 for a worn pair of Christian Dior shoes). I guess it's a lot cheaper then if you bought them new at the store but why would I pay $250 for a used pair of shoes? And the sales people are way snooty. Someone needs to remind them they WORK there. Because we shop there they get paid....not the other way around. I'm sure once you pull out your credit card they get much nice. I would suggest going to Jeremy's in SF or Berkley. There stuff is nice but over priced....I think you could pay the same prices for stuff unused on sale at Neimans. read more

I almost chose not to sell some items here because of the poor reviews, but decided to give them a try. I gave them around 10 items to sell, and around half of them sold. They were very easy to work with. I've also purchased things from them. They are picky about what they accept, so everything seems like it is in excellent condition and is a recent style. Everyone I talked to in the store seemed very good with the customer service. No complaints at all. I only brought it down a star because some of the prices are a little high. read more

This store sells upscale men's and women's clothing, shoes and accessories, and is the companion store to the Afterwards Home store (next door) which sells furniture/home decor . But both stores are pretty snooty, in my opinion. Especially the clothing store; don't even TRY to consign anything there unless it's a really high-end label. Meaning: labels like Banana Republic and BCBG (even brand-new items with tags) aren't "upscale" enough for them. I was about to call them today to consign some BNWT stuff (Zara and INC brand) and then I remembered my original review for Afterwards Home from two years ago. Good selection of clean, stylish, designer-level lightly worn clothes. I dropped in and within ten minutes had found a really nice peasant blouse and spring coat. If my budget had been limitless, I'm sure I would have found many more things to buy as the quantity of designer evening and cocktail wear was astounding. My only suggestion for an improvement would be to be nicer to your customers - I felt a little chill from the two women who rang me up, and I was dressed very nicely so I'm not sure what kind of reception someone in sandals and a sun dress might get. Oh an done more thing...impressive selection of men's dress shirts, etc. Rarely does a consignment store serve men and this one does in spades! read more

though the business appears to be run by privileged wasps who don't pay attention to browsing customers dressed in middle class, i think this place is a great high end consignment store. unlike jeremy's which sells damaged designer brands, the society owners claim they are uber picky about what they buy back. and judging the clothes myself, i don't think they're lying. every clothing piece seemed to be completely intact - many even still bearing the original tags. the shoes, however, may be another matter - although still in pretty good condition, the rich still scuff up their footwear. all items are definitely priced high but they are still substantially discounted from the original costs. as a birthday gift to myself, i splurged on miu miu, chloe and emphasis. a suggestion: if you want to find new, unused high-end items, check out online stores and ebay. oh and the rich women running the store - they warm up to you when you make a purchase. though they turned out to be pretty nice, throwing down a couple hundred bucks is somehow convenient. read more

I have been selling my clothing, furniture etc. with them for 3 years. It is very annoying to have to call every few months to ask for payment. Their split at 35% for clothing is ridiculous and you get the run around on the phone system. Bob is nice but most of the staff is very arrogant. Goodbye's in SF is MUCH better , split is 50% on clothing and the checks come automatically on the 10th of the month. I stopped giving all my high end unused clothing to Afterwards about a year ago and switched to Goodbyes. read more

The customer service here is extremely disappointing. I called to inquire about consigning a piece of high-end furniture. The woman who answered the phone gave me an email address and asked that I send photos, which I did immediately. It's been over a week, and no one has contacted me with any sort of feedback -- even to let me know that they are backed up at the moment, not interested -- whatever. Put some furniture up for consignment here, and also looked around the merchandise to see if there was anything I might like for my new house. The staff was friendly. They turned down one of my tables with a scratch (which I guess is good for buyers). All of the furniture was high-quality and in good condition. Some large price tags, but it would probably be more expensive otherwise. The furniture selection runs traditional, so I didn't end up buying anything (my taste is more modern). I've been shopping at Afterwards since they had a children's store (that's been gone at least 10 years) and I would label myself as a very savvy shopper. I very rarely buy clothes at full price and I love deals, which is why Afterwards is my favorite store in the world. I'm not exaggerating. While it's not somewhere I go every time I need a new piece of clothing, I am sure to come by Afterwards every time I am in the area. You can find amazing one of a kind clothes with lots of character... It can really be a treasure chest. As far as prices, yes- if something cost $5,000 originally, they're not going to price it at a couple hundred dollars. Items are priced fairly according to their value. Afterwards is not a thrift store, not everything is going to be cheap, but that's more than fair, especially if you're the one consigning a gorgeous and valuable piece. In regards to the workers, I think most of the people posting here have been a little quick to judge. I, too, would feel fabulous if I was surrounded by Chanel, Valentino, Zac Posen and Chloe all day every day! I think that maybe "snobbiness" (as read in previous posts) can be confused with fabulousness and maybe the ladies' sense of comfort, both of which I prefer to rigid and robotic workers in department stores. I'm also bummed to write a great review because I don't want anyone else to know my secret spot, but I thought the store deserved the recognition and it's the least I could do in return for all of the beautiful things hanging in my closet. read more

The items are high-end one-of-a-kind so you have to drop in on a regular basis. I am often in Menlo Park or nearby Palo Alto and Afterwards has excellent parking (a free parking lot right at their back door) so I stop by when I'm in the neighborhood. What have I bought? My crown jewel is my Ralph Lauren Safari rattan (hand-welded) bed and ottoman (retail about $35,000), three (3) McGuire bar stools, a huge (150 lb) chandelier for a solarium, two (2) silk, pleated lamp shades (retail probably $1,000 each), Ah yes, clothes.....too many to mention, not to mention my Marc Jacobs brown suede heels (ooooh la la). I told Bob, the owner, along with his beautiful, blond stylish wife, Katie, that I am going to have to buy another house just so I can furnish it with all the pieces I admire, but won't fit in my current place. This is NOT Goodwill, this is a place where you can buy high-end (not made in China) designer clothes and furniture for what the original purchaser paid in sales tax. I have to disagree with the other reviews. If you are a bargain hunter or thrift shop kinda person then yeah these prices and labels are not for you. However if you shop at Saks, Barneys etc and know high end fashion then you will know that you are getting some fabulous deals here. They offer an eclectic selection of home furnishings. Modern items are usually priced at half of retail and antique are current market value. In the clothing store they take current items and often have many handbags or items still in the stores at one third of the retail price. I also have to say you will find a friendly welcoming staff who will give you more personal service that you could at any department store. So if you like the good stuff and know what you could be paying for it brand new (thats whats really expensive) then you will be happily surprised to find all of the treasures in this place. read more

I had the best Cinderella- type experience here. I had less than 2 hours to get ready for a date and Barbara and the ladies at Afterwards went above and beyond to make sure that I had everything from shoes to a handbag. I went from frumpy Berkeley to sleek and chic Menlo tech. As a frequent shopper of all consignment stores in the entire Bay Area (and also new stuff, ok a frequent shopper in general), I am amused by the extreme reviews based on a single personal experience. Everyone can have an off day - even the customer! In my experience, the Afterwards staff is very well-versed in all fashion needs, so probably would like to know how best to help you.....hi end? funky? what? Just go in, look around, and figure out what, if anything, appeals to you. The store is extremely well organized, so is easy enough to navigate. The staff is flat-out busy most of the time, because the store is a hot spot for quality (read: either new or slightly used, dry-cleaned) clothing and home furnishings. The prices are what the customers are willing to pay, so if you aren't, there are lower end places just for you! read more

I have Shopped and enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere I found at Afterwards. I never spend less than an hour each time I visit. There is so much to see and the inventory is in a constant state of flux, I have found it is best not to wait on that favorite pair of pants or shirt because when you return the item may be gone. The interior design side of the store really leaves nothing lacking to the imagination The room vignettes are artfully arranged by David their in house designer, he does a masterful job considering the variety of offerings that are brought in by multiples of individuals. It is rare to find a unique designer store of this caliber at all and it is really best suited in the Menlo Park setting. . I found amazing well known well designed pieces of furniture from notable designers like Donghia, Christian Liage, Eric Brand, and other high end furniture manufactures. Bob said they have one of a kind NEW LY upholstered furniture created exclusively for the store with prices that reflect the typical type of discount reserved for the Interior design trade. I consider my self a real bargain hunter and have developed a taste for what is offered at Afterwards I have never been let down or disappointed by the staff or the Principals. read more

One of the most 'mac daddy' of consignment shops' that I have visited in the recent past. It is not for the price weak of heart but neither is fine couture, well made clothing that has been created by some of the recent past & present premiere designers....would be honored to call this store my own. Pricing I find reasonable across the board with a few exceptions but I find the owner's & staff to be open and well meaning people that are aware of their market and the trends.....was looking for a couture seamstress and was given a wonderful woman who was only too happy to arrive at my doorstep or to make an appt at her shop...unheard of service this days! For those of you who have 'naysayed' this fine store, I say, "Shame on you", either you have no idea what you are doing or if you are looking for a deep discount bargoon I have every confidence you should keep looking, you will find it elseswhere coupled with dreadful dreadful quality.... I thought a consignment store take items in and if there don't sell...donate them to charity for you....I didn't know there pick and choice the item there want to sell and there tell you your item of out of style....Dior and prada are never out of style...but maybe I should of check out some of the item in there store before I brought my item into this store....I did see a few that were out of style myself. read more

We took several items in to be sold on consignment in January under a 45 day contract. Two of the items sold. I would expect a call advising what items sold and for what amount and a check for our share of the proceeds within several days. I called 3 weeks ago where I was advised our check would be mailed to us. I have called several times only to receive voice mail and no return call and still no check. We are now 80 days into this transaction. Everything will sell eventually. It takes a long time to receive your consignment check. Don't expect any followup or personal service on items you wish to sell on consignment. Peter M. read more

I have consigned merchandise at this store several times now, and patiently followed their draconian rules about what you have to do to get paid, which is to wait 3 months for furniture and 6 months for clothing, and then write them a note asking them if the item has sold and if so, asking them to send you the required check. On more than one occasion, I have had to ask for the check multiple times before it is finally sent to me. There's never a lot of money at stake and I like the idea of recycling my used goods (which are typically expensive), but keeping up with this process and remembering to follow up when they tell you they will send a check and then it doesn't come, has gotten beyond tedious. Unless you want them to keep the money from the sale of your goods indefinitely or are prepared to follow up relentlessly, I would not recommend consigning merchandise to Afterwards. read more

Don't consign here unless you want your items to mysteriously disappear or become somehow unaccounted for. The management appears to also disappear when you ask for payments on items. It's a real double magic act. read more

They gave out personal information to someone. regarding my business with them. Would have been nice for the owner to talk to me first? This was one of my worst experiences with a business ever. He asked me to return a vase I bought there because another client wanted it to match the one she had previously bought. So I returned it and waited for the check to refund me for $400....and that is what I ran into- a long and frustrating saga of the 'check is in the mail." Fourteen calls and four months later, and only after threatening legal action did the owner finally refund my money. Unethical... Nothing is worth this much stress! Pass this store by. read more

My first, and most likely last time at this store. Walked in by a fluke... had to walk passed it to go to the bank. Looking for a cute dress to wear to a daytime wedding at the beach. I usually dress up at work so I agree with the other comments... they won't help you unless you look nice. But the lady (who was foreign - don't know if this is the rude lady that everyone is referring to), but she did not make a fan out of me. Even though they helped show me where the dresses were, she was following me around the entire store and stood there while I looked at each dress. I couldn't even feel the fabric or look at the cut for a few seconds before she had a comment about it. Asking me what I'm looking for, where I'm going, what size she THOUGHT I was... just like the others... she indirectly called me fat. hahaha I don't really take any of that stuff personal, but it was funny to me. Within 15 minutes of walking through the door, I was walking back out with a beautiful formal dress, shoes, necklace and clutch. Truly faster than waiting for my latte to be made down the street a few minutes later. The gal that helped me understood what I was looking for and guided me straight to it. I've found (and sold) some great things here and am really happy with them (aka jeans of high end designers because if I'm not in scrubs at the med school, I'm in jeans or workout clothes). Only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 5 is something that other reviews have echoed: if you come in anything less than "dressed to the nines" (which, let's be honest, I'm oftentimes not) you will be ignored unless you ask a question. I come from wealth but surely don't dress like it (IMHO: nothing tackier than being COVERED in logos, but that's another story haha). Plus, I'm young-looking (read: could pass and have passed for a HIGH SCHOOLER) even though I'm tall but that's about it. People here (ladies!) think I'm just a scraggly teen bored after AP Bio haha but I'm surely not so please do not judge your customers, cuz we would be 20-something millionaires (hyperbole to make a point) lol. Afterwards offers a wide range of fashion from Jil Sander to Theory. Its obvious they are selective, however they are terribly overpriced. I can appreciate the comments on customer service, I have shopped there for several years and had inconsistent service. Not uncommon to hear employees gossiping or discussing debacles with consigners without discretion. I can't leave my SF consignment shop in Laurel Heights without several bags of high end additions to my wardrobe, and they remember me as a repeat customer. I've invested handfuls of visits to Afterwards (and the store is usually empty) still no rapport with same employees that dote all over me but disappear when a well known customer/consigner walks in. I typically find one or 2 mediocre functional pieces and pay double what I would in San Francisco. It's convenient because I live in Menlo Park, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this experience. read more

True story: I single-handedly furnished my entire apartment with the most amazing, unique, high-quality furniture within budget and saved at least 7k vs. what I would have paid had I bought these things brand new from this one store. I kind of found the store by accident - I was at a stoplight in Menlo Park late one night and noticed a great couch in a window. I had just signed a lease on a brand new apartment, had zero furniture, and was super-frustrated going to Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and West Elm because it all looked the same and most of it was not very well made and a lot more expensive than I was willing/able to pay after having one too many ikea moments, it just was not an option. I had a tight budget but wanted to still have an apartment that looked like something out of architectural digest, I went in on a Saturday afternoon not quite sure what to expect let alone what the the prices were going to be. The clothing section of the store was kind of incredible for the sheer number of designers, sizes, and types of outfits in one location - and a lot of them in my size (0-2). However, I was very determined at least on this trip to only look for furniture. I initially walked around by myself to see everything that they had and immediately fell in love with a number of pieces - including many pieces that I could only dream of affording (and that was after the massive discount for what the original cost of the pieces were - guy Chaddock dresser for 3k is a steal). I started talking to one of the employees about a couch that looked interesting and in my price range. Even though it was evident that a number of the items were well out of my price range, what really impressed me was how engaging both the owner and David were with me. They asked me a lot of questions about what type of furniture styles did I like, what did my space look like, how was I thinking abut using the spaces (parties, entertaining), and what was it that I was looking for out of the furniture that I wanted to purchase. We actually ended up talking for almost two hours. By the end of the conversation, they had found me the perfect couch - a white slip covered lee curved couch (different than the one that I had originally seen) that was probably 1/3 of what it had originally cost and a beautiful maple wood expandable round dining table with two leaves - which was extremely reasonable as well. So I bought them, A couple of days later, I went back to take some photos of the pieces to go look for dining room chairs, armchairs, a bed, and a dresser. As soon as I got in to the store, another woman started talking to me - and figured out that I had been the girl in the prior weekend. She immediately pulled me over to some chairs that had just come in that were a perfect match for the table. I absolutely loved them - but they were definitively out of my budget. So we ended up just talking about other things for a while. She knew how much I loved the chairs and how perfect they would be for my dining room and that I really wanted to buy them so without me asking or even knowing about it, she reached out to the owner of the chairs and talked the owner into selling the chairs for a price that I could afford. She called me up the next day while I was driving to see a friend, told me the good news, and I ended up buying them over the phone. I went in the third time because while I was calling to figure out delivery, Karola mentioned that David had found the perfect coffee table for me and I needed to come see it before it got sold. So I threw on some clothes, drove over, and spent a fair amount of the afternoon looking at the coffee table (which I bought on the spot) as well as their canopy beds that are kind of hidden in the back of the third room. Karola pointed out this one canopy bed that she loved and said would be perfect. However, because it was behind some things and in pieces, I couldn't see it so I decided to trust her and buy it. Best impulse purchase ever. When it all got delivered the day after New Years, I was at work and my friend was the one meeting the delivery people. They did a great job putting everything where it needed to go, setting up what I now think is the most elegantly simple and beautiful wooden canopy bed I have ever seen, and being flexible. So at the end of the day, I got a beautifully furnished apartment at a considerably lower cost, met three really interesting and engaging people who work there, and have now found the go-to place for any additional furniture I need to buy and my new secret place that I tell my friends about. I haven't even gone there to look for clothes yet - it is on the list. Now if I could only finish unpacking my moving boxes we would be good to go... read more
