Beautiful restaurant nestled in Southeast Portland! Our server was incredibly kind, attentive, and professional. The food was, and is always outstanding. I bring everyone who visits Portland here, and I've never had a bad review. I've tried all their ramen at this point, and you can't go wrong. If you like very thin and tender noodles, I'd recommend the gluten free noodles. I'd also highly recommend their house made gyoza! Pro Tip: Use the InKind app here for extra savings!

Allllllways hits every time. The chicken thigh skewers on specials right now are absolutely amazing. Order SEVERAL if you go! Kombu seaweed ice cream is out of this world delicious and if you've never tried it you're in for an experience. The fried chicken on the appetizer menu is always a must, it's a favorite for sure. Love this place and the staff is always so pleasant too.

Nice decor and open restaurant. But that's pretty much where the positives end. We arrived on the mid afternoon. There were plenty of tables and although there were only two of us, we asked if we could have a larger table. We were told no because they had reservations. I could understand that but by the time we left 90 minutes later, the reservations hadn't showed yet. Our server was okay but given the price point, I expected a higher level of service. Food wise, it was ok. But this is the worst part of the experience, it's definitely not worth the $. Be prepared to stop by somewhere on the way home to get a pizza, burger or steak because after spending $200 for two, we were still hungry. The Wagyu beef on the ramen was tender, noodles were done right but the broth was way too oily.

Toro Maki with grey tuna and mushed up fish

The food was very mediocre and server was clueless about what he is serving us. We ordered the Toro Maki because it looked good on the other Yelp reviews. The food took a while to come out and the fish was grey and discolored. We consistently order fatty tuna/toro at every restaurants so we know what the fresh fish color is supposed to look like. When we called the server over to ask about it, he kept assuring us that it is safe to eat despite us saying we don't feel safe eating it. The second time around he said that the fish is dry aged that's why it looks like that, never once the menu mentioned that the fish was dry aged. The third time around the chefs did remake it, the fish finally looked fresh and pink so was it really dry aged or not fresh? Either way we were not comfortable eating it. Horrible service!

3.5 out of 5 Probably the weirdest Afuri I've been to. Some of the staff were giving "straight man in tech trying to act gay during Pride Month just to fit in" energy, it was... something. Anyway, the food was great. I got the Yuzu dipping noodles. You can choose your noodles warm or cold. Tried the warm ones here and the cold ones at the Slabtown location. I'd definitely go for the cold in summer. The sauce was amazing, citrusy with a hint of sweetness, super refreshing for that hot evening. But the braised pork was way worse than the first Afuri I went to last year (the one next to Voodoo Doughnut, they closed now). The lean pork was overcooked and dry, though the flavor was still on point.

What we ordered: Tonkotsu Shio - easily the most edible and delicious item we ordered... so good we ended up ordering another bowl. Must-try. Wagyu tartare - pretty delish and a solid starter. Kanpachi carpaccio - yum. Light, fresh, and flavorful. Yaki-gyoza - not sure if this was an off night, but the filling tasted sour and was honestly inedible, so we had to send it back. That said, our server was very attentive and removed it from the bill right away, which I really appreciated. Karaage - not bad, but I've definitely had better elsewhere. Kaisen chirashi - also not bad, but the rice wasn't warm, which was such a shame because it could've been so much better. Overall: great service and a great date spot if you're looking for a cozy place to check out.

Afuri has a good footprint in several states and cities in the US. The Portland location does not disappoint. Located inside an old brick building the interior is an open two story space. Kitchen is open to the patrons to watch their dishes in the making. Bar and ramen bar offer great seats beyond table seating. The family came for ramen and we had so much more. We enjoyed ramen, yakitori, sake, and brazed octopus (Tako). We enjoyed socialized with the staff. Service was great and with a big smile. Dished had us wanting more. We look to return soon. Thank you Afuri.

The food was pretty good if you're craving ramen. The broth was good and the noodles were chewy which was good. I liked the gyoza since they were crispy and added a nice crunch. Came out pretty quick and there's a decent amount of seating. You usually order at the counter and get a number so that they can bring it to you.

if you're craving ramen you've come to the right spot. honestly, this ramen is the most expensive bowl i've ever had, but i see why. the staff were VERY knowledgeable, like the type of knowledge that i know they are making them take a menu test. IMPRESSIVE! it's a big portion and those noodles are handmade and even sitting at the bar was lovely and it was such a quality dining experience. i really enjoyed getting to watch the kitchen!

Fast and friendly service on a Saturday evening. Our party of four had no reservations but were seated instantly, restaurant was about halfway full. We got our ramen really quickly. Food was great, not quite as good as Toyo but still satisfying ramen.

I've been to this place a couple of times now and my NYE experience was awesome. I brought my cousin who I hadn't seen in a long time, and it was great to bond over tasty sushi and ramen. Our waitress (whose name I don't remember but I wish I did) made things even more fun with great recommendations (and an extra ice cream treat!). Everything we had was A+ and I even got adventurous (I usually just eat salmon-based sushi things). The Basque Cheesecake was *to die for* and that should be a regular menu thing. It surprisingly paired really well with the savory ice cream. It was a fun atmosphere just like the first time, and not too crowded despite the holiday.

Always a great spot to get your sushi n ramen fix! I've been here about 4 times now.. never a disappointment :)

    Are they open on Thanksgiving?

    Can I order take out?

    Yes!

Do you have any gluten free ramen or dishes? Thanks!

My husband has egg allergies, I know it sucks. But are the ramen noodles egg free?

i'm allergic to eggs and they told me the only noodles without eggs were the GF noodles which are tofu noodles

Is the restaurant open for dining in and if what's the capacity?

Hi. We have, as of September 30th, introduced limited, reservation-only dine in seating. We still have patio seating outside for walk-in guests, but all seating in the restaurant is reservation-only. Please visit our website for availability.

    Open today 12/24/19?

11:30 AM - 2:30 PM only according to Instagram

Is there takeout available for the desserts? Like the tiramisu?

Just checked PostMates which delivers from AFURI. I saw a dessert item listed on there. So I'm inferring that it is possible to get to-go on desserts, but I don't work at AFURI myself so I can't know for fact.

Hi, does anyone know if they happen to have air conditioning ? Thanks!!

Debz, yes we have air conditioning! When it is nice out we will open the garage doors for the breeze, but when it gets hot we close it up tight and rely on our AC.

Do they use Binchō-tan for grilling their skewers?

No, they use a charcoal called taan

Do I have to do make reservations ahead of time?

Afuri only takes reservations for parties of 6 or more.

What's the vegetarian ramen situation here? Does Afuri offer at least one vegetarian broth or do they all have meat/fish in them?

Afuri offers a ramen that is completely vegan, called the Truffle Miso. It has 8-month aged black bean miso, hoji tea, local seasonal mushrooms, truffle oil, Chinese chives, and beansprout. You can also add a soft-boiled egg to it, if you like.

I ordered the red miso, and there was sugar snap peas and asparagus, which is unusual. The individual ingredients themselves were fine but as a whole, it didn't taste like miso or spicy ramen. The overload of vegetables didn't seem to belong in a typical miso ramen dish (my go-to order) and rendered the broth quite bland. My husband ordered the black shoyu ramen, which was pretty one-note. Ota Tofu is one of my favorite spots in Portland for their amazingly fresh tofu, and it's right across from this ramen shop. Sadly, the tofu they used here was fried to a crisp, lost most of its flavor and had an unpleasant, sharp texture.

With that being said, I do think that the food could use a bit more work. The restaurant is called Luc Lac, and so naturally I ordered their namesake dish. The beef was not very tender or juicy and the flavors overall seemed to be lacking. Portion sizes, however, are very generous, so I'll give them that. The kitchen brings out steaming bowls incredibly fast, filled with rich broths and excellent toppings with an efficient, straightforward dining style. Tonkotsu Shoyu (4/5): A deeply comforting and classic bowl of ramen. They offer a generous portion of perfectly cooked noodles paired with plenty of fresh vegetables like spinach, green onions, and mushrooms. The soft-boiled egg was perfectly yolky, but the dish would've been elevated even further with a slightly more generous serving of chashu pork. Tonkotsu Red (5/5): A unique variation for those who love a bit of heat. It shares the same chewy noodle and vegetable foundation as the Shoyu, but has a spicy broth that builds and ramps up the more you slurp. The heat was a distinct, subtle numbing sensation reminding me of Sichuan peppercorns, creating an incredibly flavorful and unique twist on a traditional tonkotsu base. Logistics Tip: This is a fast and casual self-service setup where you walk right up to the counter upon entering to order from the menu displayed on the wall. Indoor seating is limited to a few long, communal tables, so be prepared to potentially share space with other diners during peak hours, and remember to bus your own dishes when finished. I liked the curry and rice a lot. The pork had a nice texture that was fun to chew. It had some bite to it. It also felt meaty and satisfying. The rice was cooked well too. But unfortunately the bowl was super small. It's a $4 add-on to the curry that you can finish in like 3-5 spoonfulls. Maybe that's not terrible as an add-on; I dunno.
