I went during the first few weeks of opening. It's overall a good atmosphere but not worth the wait. The line up was approximately 20+ minutes plus, but the food didn't live up to the hype. I ordered the spicy yuzu ramen which was okay, but not the best ramen I ever had. The yuzu was a flavour that was not to my liking and the portion size was pretty small for the price. We've also ordered karaage and dumplings which tasted like any other restaurants. Another downside is that there's no set seating or server, so when a food that's piping hot comes out, the servers spend 2 minutes walking around looking for who the order goes to, so by the time it's placed in front of you, the food is already semi cold. Had really been looking forward to trying this much hyped restaurant. We ordered the soft shell crab bun and the kakuni pork bun. Both were nicely flavoured and the buns were fun to eat. The gyoza was good, too. The big disappointment was the yuzu shoyu. All it had was the nori, a large amount of bamboo shoots, and a heaping bunch of arugula which completely ruined the taste of the broth. I didn't eat it. Ramen is a staple here in Vancity and nothing beats a hot bowl of savoury noodle soup to warm your insides during this winter season! The time we went saw us having no line ups, a welcoming message as I've seen lines stretching out to the store next door. The area is spacious and modern with self serving kiosks where you will order first (that area is a bit cramped). But once you settle down the place has good vibes with pop music playing. Afuri is unique with its Yuzu based broth. It is tangy while offering that great deep chicken broth at the same time. We had their dumplings and three kinds of ramen for the night. Dumplings are a sure winner and must try. The skin is thin and filling quite generous; paired with their house sauces your taste buds are in for a treat. We had their tantanmen, tsukemen, and Yuzu Shoyu. Winners are the Shoyu and tantanmen, served with thin and thick noodles each. Shoyu definitely is a star with that well cooked out soft egg. The tantanmen is a thick peanut and pepper soup, not for everyone, but very satisfying. The tsukemen comes served cold, so beware if you're looking for a warm bite; even the hot soup isn't warm enough. I've heard a lot about this place since it opened and it's pretty pricey, I get the tonkatsu shio ramen and the bowl was a sizeable amount. The soup tasted good and the noodles were a bit on the underdone side for my taste. Overall the meal was good, but if I'm paying $17.85 for a bowl of ramen I don't want it to just be good, it should be amazing. Hazelnut tantanmen was delicious as usual. Very flavourful and filling though perhaps lacking in protein. The miso cashew gyoza was unfortunately disappointing. I really wanted to like this place after all the hype over it. But honestly, this is place is just overhyped and is probably one of worst ramen places I've ever eaten at and it's definitely more expensive than other ramen places I've eaten at considering their portion sizes. I ordered their yuzu shoyu ramen ($16) and deep fried gyoza ($6). Their one slice of pork in the ramen was delicious but unfortunately they only give you one measly slice. The noodles were thinner than I expected and reminded me more of Chinese wonton noodles rather than ramen noodles. The noodles also lacked the chewiness of other ramen noodles that I am accustomed to. Their yuzu broth was interesting and initially refreshing but didn't satisfy my ramen craving and the novelty of the yuzu wore off after a few bites. Their deep fried gyozas were nicely cooked but lacked any flavor profile and their choice of mayo as a dip was just weird. The service was ok. You place your order through a kiosk, you get a number block for your order and then you get your table where the food is delivered to you. The food comes out quickly but there seemed to be a lot of confusion from the staff as to which table the food goes to. This is probably due to the fact that the blocks are small and the place is crowded so staff can't see the number blocks. All in all, quite disappointing. The newest spot to hit the ramen scene in Richmond and, let me tell ya, it's actually not that bad at all! If I could give a true rating, I'd give Afuri ramen + dumpling a 3.5/5 stars. It was honestly a very interesting experience, and I enjoyed it enough to want to come back eventually to try what other stuff they have once in a while. So why am I only giving it a 3-star if it's "not that bad"? Well, because it was, in my opinion, just that. You may or may not like it, and, as I have said before in my other reviews on ramen shops, ramen is one of those foods that doesn't have a cookbook - there are no rules when it comes to making ramen. It is among the most flexible, if not THE most flexible, of the many foods found within Japanese cuisine. Having said this, one day a close friend of mine and I decided to come and check it out for lunch. Being residents of Richmond and being fairly hungry at about noon on a cold, winter day, we thought it'd be a good day to try out Afuri. Turns out that we made a pretty solid choice, and I'm happy to say that I actually kinda liked it! It wasn't the best ramen I've had, and certainly not to the caliber found as those on Robson St in Downtown Vancouver, but it did the job and left me satisfied to say the least. Upon walking in, my friend and I were immediately greeted by one of the staff who brought us to one of three touch-screen platforms from which customers could submit and pay for their orders for food. After ordering, we were (luckily) seated among the sea of people that all seem to have wanted to come to Afuri for lunch. It was jam-packed, but service was efficient and nothing extraordinary. Food came out of the kitchen fairly quickly, in about 10 - 15 minutes, hot and ready to eat. From the menu, I ordered the basic yuzu shoyu ramen with no additional toppings except for a marinated, soft-boiled egg. My friend ordered the hazelnut tantanmen, which is the only vegetarian option on Afuri's menu. For the yuzu shoyu ramen, I gotta be honest and say at first I didn't know whether I liked it or not. I was actually kinda dumbstruck. But as I kept slurping away at the noodles and drinking the soup, the flavours started to make sense to me and I started to enjoy my bowl of ramen about halfway into it. The yuzu component was something I've never had in ramen so it was a very interesting experience for me. The hazelnut tantanmen, on the other hand, was very straightforward with its nutty flavour and actually had a nice spicy kick to the broth. I actually preferred the hazelnut ramen over the yuzu shoyu ramen after having a few spoonfuls of the broth. Quantity and quality of food for both bowls of ramen was spot-on. The main reason why I'm giving Afuri a 3-star is because of the price. Ramen at this shop is priced a bit too high for my liking. I'm used to eating decent ramen for anywhere between $10.00 - $13.00 (base-priced on average). Afuri charged us about $16.00 for the yuzu shoyu and $17.00 for the hazelnut tantanmen. If you're down to try something new and don't mind spending the extra few dollars, then by all means try it out for sure, but I don't think I'd like the idea of spending that much extra for a base ramen when I know I could find ramen I, personally, find tastier in Vancouver for a lower price. Also, might want to anticipate a lengthy wait time, maybe 20 minutes, if you're planning on visiting during peak hours. EDIT I visited again a couple weeks later and ordered a few different items. The regular tonkatsu ramen was more delicious than the yuzu shoyu or yuzu shio ramen (probably because it's something familiar). Still, I wouldn't want to pay upwards of $17.00 for a bowl of ramen. Also, the soft shell crab bun for $8.00 is not worth it imo. It's worth maybe $6.00, definitely not $8.00. read more

It's kind of like how you order through vending machines in Japan.. or like ordering at a self served food court.. =D In terms of the food.. we ordered a "yuzu shio+extra egg" $16+1, "hazelnut tantanmen" $17, "steamed gyoza" $6. To be honest I was not impressed with adding $1 for half of a half boiled egg to start with. Let's talk about my "yuzu shio". Soup was bland with strong hint of "yuzu" scent, almost artificial like. Noodles were chewy, how I like it. Pork chashu was beautifully simmered and carefully cut into two thin slices that pretty much melts in your mouth. For the "hazelnut tantanmen" flavour was much more apparent and definitely a better choice to go for if you are into "rich" tasting broth. As for the steamed gyozas.. I am sure you can make better tasting ones at home especially considering at a price point of $1.20 per gyoza. To sum this up, foods are delicately presented but the taste is not quite there. Portions were questionable and the prices are on the high side. I would definitely put Afuri ramen in the "fine dining" section of ramens available in Vancouver. It's less flavourful and most importantly their service was quite disappointing. My friend and I got there early, as we wanted to find seats and order first while waiting for other friends. However, the host didn't allow to do so, as she said we needed to wait for everyone. After a while, our friends arrived and one of the waitresses said we could have sat down and ordered while waiting for our friends... It's probably time for Afuri to improve their food quality, as well as communications between the team. It's not overly impressive. The service was good and fast but the prices were fairly steep considering you order everything from a kiosk. I sat at the bar and wanted to order a drink mid way through my meal and was told that it would be made after I placed my order on the kiosk. I had Afuri ramen in Tokyo before and this is not even 1/10 of what Afuri ramen is. The broth taste more like lime/lemon added to soup rather than something that goes together. The aburi chasu, is bland and has strong pork smell, where in japan the chachu was the best thing you ever eaten. The noodle just break apart to moment you bite, this is more suited for Chinese noodle dish rather than ramen. If you had good ramen before, stay away from this one. read more

The ramen is on the expensive side, and each bowl has noticeably less noodles than most places in the lower mainland. And to be honest, I'm not much of a fan of their Yuzu Shio soup base. It seems like the noodles are more of a star of the show here. The soft shell crab bun is EXCELLENT, however. Perfectly crunchy/chewy and balanced nicely with the kimchi. If you want good ramen, and you want a quick place to eat. Look elsewhere. We waited 30+ mins for ramen after ordering at their kiosk. We finally received the first dish after 30 mins. It was delivered at first without the soup, and also without the utensils. The second soup never arrived. We left without tasting, but it looked sub par anyways. Customer service was not great. When we asked for a refund we were asked if we'd prefer it to go. When I said no, they tried to explain why it took so long. I asked why nearly everyone else who arrived after us received their food ahead of ours. The waitress explained it was because shes the only worker on the floor. The truth is, the second dish of our order had not been started. I finally was refunded but with cash instead of card which was my initial payment method. When I say this is a renaissance ramen I really do mean it. Never in my life have I ever had a ramen so aromatic, creamy yet light, noodle so perfect and garnish so complimenting. Got the Tonkatsu Ramen, friend got the Yuzu Shoyu Ramen, we also got the Karaage and the circular gyoza dish. To be frank, I was overly underwhelmed by the quality of the food. The Tonkatsu was underseasoned and the Yuzu didn't work very well. Furthermore, I don't even think they were using ramen noodle... The Karaage and Gyoza weren't bad but weren't special. It was ridiculous to charge us a mandatory 18% gratuitiy while seating our party (majority were young children) at a communal table/bartop in a near empty restaurant, and then the only "service" was to bring us our ramen. We had to distribute the utensils ourselves. We had to ask for water. Then after paying, when we wanted to know the reasoning for this gratuity for the nonexistent service, the owner agreed to refund the gratuity to us. And yet, the owner would rather yell at the staff then to refund us. Finally got a chance to check out what this new Japanese ramen chain hype in Richmond is all about. It's a clean and organized restaurant upon walking in and the waitress greeted us with a smile right away. She directed us to the self serve ordering kiosks just like the ones in Japan and explained the different options on the screen. We visited on a weekday and the store was still pretty busy but not packed. We got our food pretty quickly. We ordered the yuzu shio ramen (gluten free option) and yuzu Shoyu ramen. It's my first time trying a yuzu based ramen and to be completely honest, I did not enjoy it. The ramen was not piping hot when served. The noodles were very thin and more on the soggy side - reminded me more of those Chinese egg noodles rather than Japanese ramen. The pork was nicely charcoal grilled and tasted delicious. But all the ingredients in one bowl did not seem to complement each other - turned out to be a very weird taste all together. Also, priced at $17 per bowl, I expected better. The restaurant offered prompt and great service, but could improve on their food quality. For that price, you can get better quality food somewhere else to fulfill your ramen craving. read more

The dumplings were a bit bland and the crust holding them together wasn't crispy, but the soft shell crab bun was pretty good - save for the hair that I found on the bun when I flipped it over. The manager (I believe - standing by a till and occasionally fielding orders) came, saw, took the plate away, and replaced it with another bun that took a little longer to come out than the first one did. My party didn't order any ramen, but the table beside us did and the bowls do look a bit small for the $16-17 they're asking for. Went here on opening day! It was quite busy at 7pm, the wait staff were nice but you can tell that some of them were getting a feel of what they should be doing in the restaurant. Especially since the whole restaurant is a self-serve type of place. There is 1 host that seats you and directs you to a computer where you place your order. You have to get your own water/utensils so don't forget to do that after you order. It's a very causal restaurant with long shared tables a in the middle, we had the bar seats because we enjoy watching the chefs make our food! But honestly, there were so many people in the tiny kitchen, people reaching over each other - looked like a hot mess. We ordered the gyoza pancake, got 8 pieces for $10. Definitely not worth it, the cook in charge of it actually burnt one, had to make a new one. When they were plating it I saw another cook picking off the burnt edge pieces with his fingers...I've made gyozas much better frying it at home. Don't get this dish because sure, they fry it all together but once you rip it apart the dough and meat inside all fall apart and your left picking the pieces off the plate. I got the tonkotsu tantanmen - if spicy isn't for you don't get this one! It's spicy and the broth is kind of creamy, I rate this 3/5, not much meat except for the ground pork that is minced up...also I didn't know it was spicy because on the menu it didn't specify that it was. It said it was made of miso tare and pork broth. The bowl was tiny, and cost $17. I added an egg because it didn't come with one for an extra $1. They forgot my egg. Total cost is $18. We also tried the Yuzu ratan which is also spicy but less spiced than the tantanmen, the broth taste a little different from other places because of the Yuzu but the chashu pork was thick and you can taste the burnt grilled marks, did not enjoy the meat. This was $16. You can't customize the way your noodles are cooked but there are other ways you can customize your dish. Overall too pricey, chashu is much better at other places, cooks seemed unprofessional but doing their best..probably will not come back until they settle in a bit better and figure out their recipes. read more
