Can't believe this was an Uber Eats discovery!! Between hockey sessions at hillcrest I was craving something warm and was looking for Ramen spots near the Hillcrest community center that I could order delivery from as I was careless at the time . Zubu caught my eye on the Uber Eats app because they had a Bogo spicy chicken Ramen deal. While , I didn't go for the spicy chicken Ramen at the time I ordered an order of the Karaage and Nori fries ! Easily top two in terms of best Japanese fried chicken/ karaage I've ever had and I've been to Japan a few times!! I don't know if it's the seasoning or the wonderful Ponzu that they give you ...it's hard to name one thing that makes this dish great , but it being well seasoned and perfectly battered are just some of the many of the reasons as to why this is amongst the best karaage I've ever had !! The Nori fries, although are very expensive and to be frank quite possibly among the most expensive fries I've ever had ...were also the best nori fries I've ever had as well . I would rate ZUBU 3.5 stars considering taste and price. Their menu is more expensive than many other ramen places you can go to in Vancouver, while taste is average. You do get what you expect but there is nothing spectacular. They have a large menu including appetizers, drinks, and desserts. Service is good but at times felt like they were pushing us to add on other items. The restaurant is large and roomy, slightly dim. We sat in a nice booth with greenery around it. I shared the ramen flight ($21) with my boyfriend, which included spicy vegan, creamy chicken, and tonkotsu soups. The server said that each bowl was around the size of a mini ramen, but it was significantly smaller. The flight is definitely for one person to enjoy. We added on a spicy tonkotsu mini ramen so we were able to compare the size. Both of us love spice so we got the "burning hot" level of spicy. It was similar to buldak fire noodles level! My parents and I ordered 5 items but I have picture of only the first dish. That's because they all looked so good so we dove right it and ate and forgot to take any picture. It was Easter Sunday. I took my parents around town to look at cherry blossoms. It was around lunch time when we drove through Kerrisdale on the way to UBC so we decided to stop and look for a restaurant. We ordered: - chicken karaage (8-pc) - edamame - my parents each had a mini tonkotsu ramen - I had the poke bowl The chicken karaage pieces were generous in size. The coating was light and crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. My parents were glad that there were mini size offerings for ramen which were perfect for them. My dad had a regular and my mom had a medium-spicy (2 on their 4-pt scale). She said it wasn't spicy at all although she could eat raw chili peppers like snacks. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Saturday night when my friend and I came here for a bite. We got seated quite quite quickly, though our menus took a while to get to us. It would be come a pattern here where our water refills and bills were delayed by quite a bit. We had the gyozas to share and they were fine, not very memorable. So this was my first time my family and I went to Zubu. We had planned to go for ramen (my son's favorite) and saw a placard outside Zubu advertising special price of $12.50/bowl of ramen, which we thought, "Great!" I had actually heard about Zubu from my brother, who recommended the Metrotown shop. Anyway, when we sat down, that's when things started to be less-than-positive for us. I asked the server (Server #1) who sat us about the special, and she confirmed with us that "Yes, the $12.50 special applies to the Pork, Chicken and Vegan ramen orders, for the Classic size." So far so good, but after we ordered, I asked her if I should show her my QR code (to collect points) and she curtly replied, in just one word, " Later." So, OK, my first time here, so I just learned that we do it later. That's fine. The meal itself was great, and the other server (Server #2) who delivered our meal and checked on us was very nice and professional. She came a couple of times to check about our waters. The time came for us to ask for the bill, and when we saw that we got charged the regular price for the ramen, I asked them about the special. We were then told, "Oh, you need to order at least one appetizer in order to get the special price." This was NOT told to us at the beginning. In truth, if it was told to us at the start, we probably would've gotten an appetizer and had a really enjoyable meal. However, to NOT be told at the beginning, and then to just be told we needed to order something else at the END of our meal, is just not very service-oriented, nor professional. They did offer a meek "Sorry about that," after we paid (I wasn't sure if it was Server #1 or Server #2, as it was after we left our seats and about to head out the door). One of my favorite ramen places lately. I like their Tonkatsu Kuro Ramen which comes with 2 good sized pieces of cha siu. The broth is very flavorful but also heavy with fat which can make you feel very full. My kids like their handrolls that you roll up yourself. Their best deal is their $22.50 Lunch Set that's only available until 2pm on weekdays. It comes with your choice of drink, appie, entree, and dessert from a smaller selection. If you choose the House Salad as your appetizer, its HUGE! I recently came intending to go for lunch and get their lunch set but I guess people are out and about again and there was a 30min wait! By the time we got seated, it was past 2pm, which meant the lunch set was no longer available and it was time for Happy Hour. The HH snack items available were still pretty pricey so like I said, lunch set is better value. We tried their Ebi Mayo and Salmon Taco. Zubu has been my go to ramen lately. Different branches under this chain are consistently good. Ordered the Tonkotsu Kuro - pork broth is fatty but yummy. Thin noodle is done perfectly al dente. Favourite ramen place before they changed the chicken ramen not as good but still great place

I came for dinner Thursday at 6:30 with a friend and the restaurant was mostly full, but we were still able to get seated immediately. I was starving, so we decided to share an appetizer and each get our own ramen. The chicken karaage ($4.15 for 5 pieces) was delicious. It was very well flavored and moist on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. For ramen, I went with the tonkotsu kuro ($15.25) and asked for fatty chashu with no green onion. I asked them to swap out the thin noodles for thick noodles as well. It was so good! The tonkotsu broth had a lot of flavor but wasn't overly salty. I ended up drinking all of it. Portions were bigger than expected. It looked like a small bowl when I first got it but it's very deep. Both my friend and I struggled to finish our ramen. My only complaint is that the ramen doesn't come with a soft boiled egg by default. I completely forgot about it and didn't realize until I was almost done eating, when my friend pointed it out. Given that the pandemic is still a thing, we elected to eat at one of the tables outdoors. We ordered: Brussel sprout ramen Aka ramen extra hot Fried calamari Lettuce wrap The ramen was very good -- flavorful, excellent, springy consistency, lots of goodies. I'd say this is more like a 3.5 stars rounded up. It's a pretty standard spot for ramen. I tried their spicy vegan ramen and did enjoy it. The broth was flavorful, I could taste the spicy garlic, and the kale noodles were cooked perfectly. In terms of toppings, the spicy vegan ramen had soft tofu, corn, and scallions. I didn't mind this, but if you're looking for more toppings you may be disappointed. I can't comment on their meat based ramens. The spicy vegan ramen was $15.5 + tax. I visited zubu when they first opened over a year ago, at that time I was disappointed with my orders and haven't been back since. In hindsight, I should've been more forgiving in light of a recent management switch. My recent visit was actually driven by a trip to their neighboring establishment; I was impressed with their cute outdoor patio (perfect as I'm still hesitant to dine in at some places) and a new summer menu item - their Cold Ramen! Regretfully no pictures were taken as we devoured our food over a busy catch up sesh. I ordered a cold ramen with their sweet soy sauce (alternative option: sesame sauce). The ramen is thicker than the usual type served hot, think dip-ramen type noodles. It's served with a rather generous potion of pickled red ginger, cucumber pieces, shredded chicken breast and a soft centered ramen egg. I did think the chicken was a bit dry, because white meat, it was quite bland as it's unseasoned. I was actually keen to order an extra portion of noodles but that option was not available for the cold ramen. Overall, I enjoyed the cold ramen, it surpassed my expectations for a hearty dinner. As a salad lover, I feel like I would enjoy this even more without the chicken, just straight up cold noodles, sauce, ample veg + the ramen egg. Decent ramen, but I have to take a star off because of their misleading "deals". On delivery apps, they have buy 1 get one free "deals", but they increase the price of the items that have the deal so that the price basically ends up the same as if you didn't have a deal. Normal price for a ramen here is 17.80. On the apps, they're ramen that are marked up to 25.75 (44% premium). Once you add in app fees and tip, you're at $35, literally the same price as just buying two without a buy one get one free "deal". So you don't really get any benefit from the "deal" if you want two ramen and, if you only want one, you're hugely overpaying because of the extra markup. read more

Nothing like hot and soupy ramen on a cold rainy day. The only thing that can top it is getting a weekday lunch special! $17.50 gets you a an appie, ramen and a dessert. SOLD! We had their curry cheese fries, consommé garlic fries and edamame. I liked their garlic fries best and I'm okay with that as an appetizer! I have walked pass this Japanese ramen restaurant a few time and it seems like popular place for many young people. I was looking for a place for my late lunch and I came here. As this was my first visit so I thought it would be safe to pick a bowl of ramen. I ordered the Tonkotsu Aka ramen with fatty chashu and mild spicy. It didn't take long for the noodle. The soup base was tasty without disappointment. The chashu was fatty as expected and then noodle was done well. The mild spicy taste has waken up my taste buds. Initially, we went only because of the ramen flight, but it is not available at this location. Instead, we had a few happy hour dishes since we arrived at 3:30 pm. The restaurant was not too busy on a Friday, but I could see a few groups in and out on the patio prior to our arrival. Food: Salmon Tacos - $6.10. Two mini crispy wonton tacos made with sashimi-grade salmon, cherry tomato, white onion, and cilantro. Taste: 7/10. This is basically a DIY salmon hand roll (see image). The seaweed is laid out with rice, salmon, and toppings on top. I could not taste the toppings. It was nothing special. I think the most interesting aspect of the Salmon Tacos is the compressed towel that came with it. The compressed towel is a fiber towel that is compressed into the shape and size of a small tablet. The towel tablet expands when water is added to it (see video). This is great since you should wash your hands before rolling up the food. Takoyaki - $8.85. Five pieces of battered octopus, egg tartar, okonomi sauce, mayonnaise, dried bonito flakes, green onion, and shredded nori seaweed. Taste: 7/10. The overall dish looks appealing and resembles the street food you get at the night market. Like all takoyaki, the inside is gooey. That's how it is and may taste weird to first timers. Unlike Tom W. the first to review, I was the next day crew who waited 2 HOURS in line for their grand opening. Sigh....I really wish I hadn't....but sadly I was getting orders for a few trapped inside who needed a ramen break. I'll start with the pros. The friendly staff....after waiting an hour and a half in line....the staff was very friendly and helpful. They really helped diffuse any frustration that came with ordering (a lot that wasn't available after the 1.5 wait) The Takoyaki was delicious! Crispy outside and yummy octopus filling inside, with plenty of sauce and egg tartar salad. The chicken ramen was delicious as well, a lot of chicken breast, although more of a sliced meat format, rather than fresh chicken from the bone. The flavoured egg was delicious and perfectly oozy, just like you want it! And the noodles tasted fresh. I think ordering in, it will be an amazing new hit! Now for the cons The Tonkatsu Aka ramen broth literally had no flavour....the broth was actually quite terrible and just had a fatty sludge on top and no salt whats so ever. I actually called back to find out if there was a mistake...maybe they forgot to add the seasoning? And they said they weren't quite sure, the broth wasn't meant to be salty. I didn't want it to be salty, but we did expect flavour! And it had NONE! Which was very disappointing. I'm going to chalk it up to a mistake, seeing as the crazy couple day opening they had. I hope to try it fresh one day. The sign up front said 60 min wait for line and food. We waited in line for 1.5 hours to order and then told 30-40 minutes after we ordered! When we finally were able to order, they were out of half the things we wanted! And that was really really disappointing. I would've expected them to let the long line up of people know when they ran out of certain things. For example, I would never stay in line for an hour for ramen, no matter how good! But I was excited to try the salmon Yuzu ceviche, the ebi mayo prawns and their scallop seafood temaki! But all of these things were sold out. Very solid tonkatsu Ramen just moved in to Kerrisdale. Today is the grand opening of Zubu. It takes over the former Jinya location. For its grand opening all proceeds go to charity. Being second in line we ordered the Ramen to go. It is a little slow taking 20 minutes to prepare. The wait was worth it! I had the Tonkatsu Kuro with thick noodles. It came with a few pieces of thick chashu pork and seaweed. Noodles were bouncy and the pork broth was rich/ flavorful. Am very satisfied. The Yatai chicken was good too. The chicken slices were substantial and the bamboo pieces were generous. It was a nice change if you wanted something less greasy. Iwill definitely come back. Food is 5 stars. Solid Japanese restaurant located in Kerrisdale offering ramen. There's no shortage of good/great Japanese eateries in Kerrisdale. ZUBU stands out in that they emphasize ramen/noodles. They do have poke bowls and deep-fried treats, but most customers seem to come for the ramen; at least we do. We've tried a few varieties of their ramen. The broth is hearty, thick and flavorful. Noodles are perfect in their firmness. The only disappointment is the rather meager servings of meat. Regardless of ordering chicken or pork, the small meat portions will leave you yearning for more. And, considering the elevated price of approximately $14-$16, I'm sure they could add another slice of pork or chunk of chicken, no? The poke bowls are a kaleidoscope of color. I appreciate the effort in arranging all the colorful pieces to enhance the presentation. The fish tastes fresh and feels firm. The portions appear small, but one bowl should satisfy most people. Service is polite and proficient. But, keep in mind that during COVID-19 times, you will need to spend a moment filling in some contact tracing forms and sanitizing your hands prior to being seated. I stopped into Zubu the other day for a quick lunch, they were already so busy by noon and was only able to seat me by the patio which was okay with me, their patio was at the back of the restaurant and has no access to wifi and tons of bees which I didn't enjoy. The service was a bit slow and you can feel a bit neglected sitting in that patio area since you aren't in the main restaurant. The salmon avocado hand roll was pretty good but the fish was okay, not as fresh as you expect. The tonkotsu kuro ramen was really good and consistent with the other Zubu locations. The broth was really good and the ramen noodles had a nice al dente bite. All the crispy onion toppings and woodear mushrooms paired really well too. As far as ramen places that offer vegan ramen in Vancouver, this is pretty middle-of-the-road. I ordered their spicy vegan ramen for takeout one evening and it was ready within 10 minutes. Compared to the "vegetarian ramen", the spicy vegan ramen has far fewer vegetables, but contains some different spices and oils (the spicy part)--not sure how this warrants the $15.50 price tag. The broth is moderately flavourful and decently spiced, though nothing all that special to be honest. The kale noodles (in green) are solid and come in a decent portion. The toppings are solid but sparse, and again, I would like some veggies with this (and not have to add toppings for another $2-5 or whatever). All in all, with so many superior vegan ramen options in town (Danbo, Benkei, Gyo Para, etc.), I don't think I'll return. But it's a solid spot if you're in this part of Kerrisdale. read more

Not only did they take over Jinya's previous restaurant locations I think they also took over some of their menu items. I think it fell short of what I originally had at Jinya's but it could also be that I had to go and that made up for the difference in quality. Nothing too spectacular - I wouldn't go out of my way to try their ramen and bun. Their hand roll is pretty neat. First I've seen in Vancouver. It's very convenient for those on the go. Tried ZuBu for the first time during work lunch break, and waited half an hour for a bowl of ramen. Thank Goodness the serving was small, otherwise I would not have a chance to slurp it down within the remaining 15min of my lunch break. I can't blame the wait staffs. They were all very friendly and attentive. But I felt something must have happened in the kitchen. I have eaten ramen at many other restaurants and never had to wait that long for a simple bowl of noodles. Not only that, the seasoned egg add-on came out under- seasoned and yolk overcooked, which was tragic. The last straw for me was I felt nauseated and had diarrhea that evening. Very good ramen. Friend ordered a chicken with Chinese parsley. Broth was chicken with lemon and reminded us of a lemon grass Thai broth. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen with a splash of extra chili paste. Really good, and it's about the pork broth which I spooned every last drop after the pork and ramen disappeared. Service was really good. Staff paid lots of attention to water glass, clearing plates promptly after finishing appetizers, and entrees. We'll trained. Ambiance was OK. We went a bit earlier than normal around 6pm, and young patrons were glued to their smart devices, and playing video games while they ate. Some were interacting with each other but others were in zombie mode half eating and half stuck to smart device. I don't mind the texting with remote friends but when the video game came out on the iPad and was heard by other diners the restaurant needs to ask them stow the electronics. read more

The ramen was very good. The cock-a-noodle-do was an excellent and filling bowl of ramen. Service however was a little slow. Super friendly, but slow. Happy hour was very well priced. And drinks were good. Would definetly return for another bowl of ramen! read more
