I also ordered burritos, one beef and one chicken, I normally prefer beef, but the chicken burrito was delicious and much better than the beef burrito. I have been here twice: both bad experiences. First time: Went with my boyfriend and got tableside guacamole... worst guacamole I've ever had... how is that possible at a Mexican restaurant? We sat at the bar, so we could not get tableside. It did NOT taste homemade... tasted like fake/boxed guacamole. They must not make it fresh if its not tableside. Since the guacamole was such a let down, we decided not to order entrees. Second time (over a year later.. decided to give it another try): My girlfriend and I came here and sat on the first floor at a high top. Waitress seemed overwhelmed and unhappy. It took her over 5 minutes to greet us and get us drinks. She was just not friendly. We heard the table behind us (mother and daughter) say they hated their guacamole and they sent it back...guess they haven't fixed it since the last time I was there. We ordered chicken quesadillas $11 (which we absolutely love and order at almost every restaurant we go to), I was very excited for them. They were underwhelming and bland. I've had better quesadillas at Sylvan Street in Amesbury and random pubs. We also got the street tacos.. $11.25 for 4 (if I remember correctly) Carne Asada, cheese, cilantro, and pico de gallo. This restaurant receives an 8 for atmosphere but a 1 for food. There is nothing healthy on this menu unless you get a piece of fish on a salad. It is NOT authentic Mexican food and and is nothing but a bunch of melted cheese, sour cream and re-fried beans that could choke a buffalo. There are next to no dishes that are "clean"...you know, lean meat/fish, veggies. It is a Gluten Free eater's nightmare....and if you are dairy intolerant you should definitely keep walking. The only thing this restaurant is good for are Margaritas and chips and salsa...PERIOD! Most unhealthy slop we've ever seen! My family and I have been going to agave for years! We like to sit at the bar/near the bar, get a pitcher of sangria or one of their excellent margaritas and relax with free chips and salsa! If you're looking for a place to get your Mexican fix, definitely try Agave. And if you're in the mood, try a cup of one of the soups- they are all very good especially the Cocido de Pollo! Went to Agave last night the service was fantastic, love the chips and salsa but I ordered a grilled salad that the menu said was to come with avocado and queso fresco - neither were on the salad. For almost $18 I paid for a half of a romaine head grilled, three slices of cucumber and three slices of tomato with grilled chicken. Glad the chips and salsa were good. read more

Very average Mexican place. Ambiance is nice, service was fine, and there is a great selection of tequila. The food was a disappointment at the lunch we had. The salsa was fine but the chips that were served hot from the kitchen were either soft or hard to the point of tasting stale. Asked for a new batch and those were the same way. Someone in the kitchen did not cook them correctly. Entrees were "meh". The grilled chicken with mole sauce was dry and the mole tasteless. My wife's chicken tacos were notable only for their lack of chicken. The rice sides were ok but dry. The refried beans were decent though. Will not go here again. read more

We've been coming here for years and have had pretty good experiences but last night was different. Service and staff were attentive, but the food was subpar. The 1st sign was that our order came too fast (3 minutes from when we ordered) - Faster than would be necessary for the food to be made-to-order. This would normally be great, but the chicken in the fajitas (a mex staple), was hard and dry, as if it had been pre-prepared - which the timing would suggest. I like the food here pretty well - their ceviche appetizer is a must-order, and the shrimp/avocado salad is very tasty too. I can't vouch for the authenticity of the food, but what you get is usually pretty plentiful and tastes good. The only negative I can say is that most of the time, their margaritas leave me with a miserable headache the next day. I don't know if it is something in their sour mix (which can be a little too abundant for my palate in most of the specialty margs), or the tequila they use, but I won't order margaritas from here any more. read more

Agave never seizes to amaze me we are within walking distance and all though the temperature felt like below zero we decided to go to agave! We walked in and my fave Jeremy was bartending so we stayed at the front bar. We switched up the order a little we got the normal margerita to start and shrimp Avacado salad but had to take advantage of 3.75 Carne as ada tacos...I also got Carne as ada steak caesar and my bf got enchiladas and we ordered a dessert churros ....a dessert tequila ask for purple bottle! And southern cross special drink with muddled pineapple with st Germain and rosemary...even with Jeremy busy with regulars he still made us feel comfortable and guided us through an even better experience than last time ...I tried writing and checking in earlier but my phone was acting up must be the full moon! read more

Got take out on Memorial Day, our order was ready super fast, the pick-up window was very efficient and clean with 2 cups for pens; 1 sanitized, 1 not sanitized. This review is a review of the Agave 3rd floor bar (no elevator). A three-sided bar sets up easy conversations with always friendly people. A setting sun sets up great lighting. The music is comfortably quiet (thank you). Christian is very attentive bartender who makes a great marguerita. Word from a friend was to absolutely order the guacamole, and the recommendation was right on. They bring out all of the freshly prepped ingredients, ask if you would like mild, medium or spicy, and then proceed to mix it up in the mocajete right next to your table. It was fantastic, as were the fish tacos and chicken mole. Everything around us looked fabulous, including the decor in the cozy upstairs dining room. Agave serves up your typical American style Mexican food. Their guacamole is killer but the rest of their menu doesn't stand out in anyway. However, their waitstaff is very accommodating, particularly with larger parties. Ceviche is also wonderful. We went last night only to realize there was a massive Halloween event taking place downtown. The dinner wait was quite long, so we sat to eat at the bar after about a 20 minute wait. The bartender was so attentive and professional despite the crowds (and there are typically waits here; but this was an even busier night for Agave). She didn't have a minute of downtime the entire time we were there. Every drink she made was with the same precision as the last. Truly a professional. During a quick visit to Newburyport, I walked by Agave with my mom and Grandma, who are San Diego natives. Once they read the menu outside, they knew they had to try it based on how the food was described--it sounded pretty authentic. We tried the taquitos, a shredded beef taco, chile relleno, and quacamole. For my mom and Grandma who are very tough critics, they were really impressed...I feel like that says a lot! The bartenders are great and really know their stuff. The food is alright but it was wayyyyyy too much cheese. If there was less cheese it would not make every dish as soggy as it appears. We have been to Agave a few times and had good food and service. We sat at the bar on the third floor and had pretty marginal service at best and crappy food. My wife's fish tacos were ok and my shrimp fajitas were terrible. The tortillas were stale and the filling was less than mediocre. $14 for an average margarita with cheap tequila is a bit steep. If I was able to rate 0 stars I would. Right off the bat I was not prepared to be taken up three flights of stairs to get to my seat. Carpet in a restaurant is gross to me. It felt like I was in Paul Revere's bedroom. Took the woman a solid 10 min to even come up to the table. Brings me a glass of water with someones fresh pink lipstick around the rim. This glass was literally taken out of he dirty bin and given to me full of water. There was zero recognition of this and I think that was in extremely poor taste considering RSV, COVID, flu type A and B, and the regular cold are swarming the earth right now. Its flu season lets not give people dirty cups and plates. Only compensation for that nasty cup I was given was a compliment on my nails. Taquitos were decent, overpriced, didn't get a side plate had to eat over my napkin like a dog. Got the 2 way steak and chicken fajitas and could not have expected to get an entire plate of zucchini?? Since when was zucchini a part of a fajita skillet. Got maybe 5 pieces of steak and 7 pieces of chicken. Total came out to 46 bucks. Worth nothing. Popped into Agave on a recent trip to the permanent flea (Oldies) in Newburyport, despite my fiance's reservations that it's a chain (I'm pretty sure not-- I think he was thinking of Chipotle). Our host & server was great, from his sense of humor to his knowledge, enthusiasm and promptness. There are apparently several floors; we asked which he recommended and he said "well I'm HERE, so obviously I recommend this floor." Points for amusing us. One star is lost only because prices seemed a bit high and because after an extensive discussion of the available "flights" of tequila and my assertion that even if it's not the best, I wanted to see what Sammy Hagar was doing with the stuff, on the bill was a completely different brand which was $3 more for the order. So I don't know if I got the Sammy and paid for the other, or got the other and have no idea what the Sammy tastes like, still. I didn't have the energy to argue, or maybe I was just too tipsy. The relief hostess was sooo surly looking... glad we didn't have to talk to her because we walked in while she was getting coffee. I prefer service with a SMILE and all of that. Honestly a bit of a let down after hearing all the hype about Agave being "SO GOOD!" I mean, the food was certainly decent (I had the chile rellenos) but certainly not worth the $17 I paid for my meal. The guacamole was okay, but also not as fresh as I would have liked .. Maybe I'm just spoiled from the amazing guacamole at Plaza Azteca in Methuen. Their one saving grace however was their margaritas. Reasonably priced for the size, for sure! And strong. I visited Agave in Newburyport on July 12, 2019. I didn't have any expectations for this restaurant, as my guest and I were simply looking for a quick bite to eat. We were seated immediately on the second level, and were greeted by our waiter within a few minutes. We each got an iced tea with sugar on the side as our drinks. Instead of getting a small container of various sweeteners and sugar as any other restaurant does, we were given a measly 2 sugar packets by our waiter. As if the sugars were being rationed. When we asked for more sugars, we were unpleasantly given 2 sugars and 2 more sugar packets. Later on, we were given stale, bland chips and a watered down salsa. I ordered fajitas, and my guest ordered a burrito. Both meals were solid meals, but the rice was very dry. I then asked my server if I could get an extra tortilla for my meal, and he snarlingly remarked that there was an additional charge for the tortilla. The main reason why i will never be returning to this restaurant again is for the rude, and terrible servers. Our waiter never checked on us while we were dining, as of to ask for napkins, how our meals were, if we needed anything, or for refills on our drinks. He also was unfriendly, and acted as if he had a chip on his shoulder. To top it all off as we left, we were asked how our meals were by a group of female hostesses. My guest said, "it was alright" and I picked up on the comment "Oh, it wasn't amazing!" with cackling by all of them. This sarcastic remark is extremely unprofessional, and rude to customers. I expect much more from a restaurant that is overpriced and in the center of Newburyport. read more

Used to love this place and recommended it to others..Not anymore! I took my boyfriend from out of town and was embarrassed. We ordered the guacamole instead of chips and salsa. We received guacamole in a salsa dish, enough for three chips, so we ordered more. All other tables received the large black bowl, which is what I was expecting to receive (and what we ordered). We didn't know until we received our bill how much we were being charged for the tiny, incorrect portions. We were also charged for chips and salsa. Reading over the bill, we were completely shocked. The waitress quickly handled the transaction and I was not even able to address our confusion. I feel we were taken advantage of (possibly by our younger age). We were clearly surprised and the waitress seemed to hurry us along to avoid any questions we would ask. Also, overheard someone order an extra taco and was told he could not due to "portion control". The waiter agreed it was absurd and felt bad but said he wouldn't be allowed to put the order in. This is the most delicious, freshest Mexican cuisine I've ever had. It was positively divine! My friends and I popped in here for dinner and they were able to accommodate all of our requests- 1 vegan, 1 vegetarian, and 1 gluten-free/tomato allergic person. Tonight both of our margaritas tasted like they were made with a powder mix or artificial sweetener, before they were worth the $11, we shared a carne asada quesadilla and it was 3 layers and soggy- you couldn't pick it up, it was more of a layered burrito not at all crispy- had to use a fork. Server asked if we wanted to add rice and beans- said yes since we were sharing... $3.25 for less than a cup of rice and another $3.25 for re fried beans plus $0.75 thin runny sour cream. So disappointed by our recent visit. Agave was a favorite for years. On a recent visit for lunch we found that they were no longer offering chips and salsa for free, and were serving everything without any accompaniment. My husband's favorite had been shrimp tacos which used to come with three tacos and rice and beans. You now have to pay $3-4 per taco, and rice is separate and so are beans. He decided to order mole, feeling that the taco deal was a bit much. Mole is chicken and sauce. Fortunately the bar tender made it clear that it was just chicken and sauce, no tortillas, no rice, no beans, all sold separately. We left, and the bar tender didn't seem surprised. It was always higher priced Mexican food, but now feels like an exercise in nickeling and diming. Eating out is about both the experience and the food. I wouldn't return. read more

I found the food there to be quite good. It had some bite to it. It is not something you find in the New England area since so many prefer their food to be not so spicy hot.
