I work (basically live since I live at work these days) right next door to Agua Verde yet I've only actually eaten here once this quarter (which is proof in itself that this place is medocire). The staff members are friendly and they LOVE conversing in Spanish with you which is fun. The food is okay at best which is really unfortunate because this place has so much potential. During the day, they have an espresso bar where you can grab coffee or horchata. I've never stopped by for lunch but it's always poppin but I hear a lot of professors eat there -_- I had a sit down dinner here earlier this week and it was meh. I ordered the mushroom tacos for $12 and my friend ordered the chicken burrito. My tacos came with a green rice, beans, and three mushroom tacos. The tacos were just tortillas topped with mushrooms sautéed with peppers and onions and dusted with cheese. I could have made this in the lunchroom of my building :( All of their seafood is caught "responsibly" which is groovy (but to be completely honest, sustainable seafood does not exist). But with so many cheaper and tastier places to eat a few streets up on the Ave, why would I eat here?! They had a salsa bar with the three types of salsas: hot, verde, chipotle. They were meh too. On weeknights, they have dinner specials that average at around $15. They have a "patio" space that is heated and coveted with plastic tarp, killing the gorgeous view. If you sit below the heater, you will melt so sit closer to the water if you're on a date ;) As for the paddle club portion, I've rented gear here during the summer (which is stupid because I have access to almost every marine transportation device at the uni) and it's fun but there are so many bigger boats out on the water making the whole experience really...stressful. Went to Agua Verde on the 4th of July. If you're planning to rent a kayak, I suggest you come before 11am to avoid any crowds and by the time you're done at around noon, it'll be a perfect time to grab some lunch at the cafe. The rental prices are really soooo cheap at $15/hr; check out their website for their specials. There are basically 2 paddle destination options--on the right is Lake Union where you can check out boathouses, seaplanes, and a great view of downtown Seattle; on the left is the arboretum and more of a wildlife experience. The cafe upstairs will definitely satisfy the apettite you build after an hour or two of kayaking! They have the best damn fish tacos I have ever tasted!! I also suggest getting an extra order of chips because their salsa bar is amazing - try the chipotle sauce, alittle hint of spicy and sweet. read more

I would have given them more stars if they would have better service. We rented a 2-person kayak for 2 hours and we called ahead to inquire about the wait. It was estimated at 45 minutes, but it ended up being 1 hour 15 mins. Yuck! The problem we saw, there were tons of empty kayaks in the water, ready to be ridden, with people ready to get riders into the boats . . . but people weren't ready to get in. I think the main problem was the life vest station. It seemed like people signed their waivers and then waited a while to get their life jackets. I don't know what the hold-up was, but it was annoying. I liked the kayak ok, and it's a good place to have one, but it's annoying for the wait. The price is decent, we paid $29 for 2 hours, even though it said $30 for 2, so we're not sure if they gave us some kind of discount for the wait or not. The bathrooms were apparently redone, and I know that the men's now has a stall, sink, and shower! (The b/f was extremely impressed by this.) Recommend going to Lake Union over the Arboretum (better water, more sites to see), and you will get wet! :D read more

Yup, still three stars. Hard not to go crazy with the rating just based on the waterfront location on a nice day, which is just spectacular. The food is still pretty good, although I wish they would give you a choice on how spicy you want your tacos. This last time we both thought there was too much spice, which covered up the other flavors. The prices are *okay,* but dinner and drinks was $40, which is a lot to spend on Mexican and a lot to spend for cafeteria-style dining. I am also not a huge fan of their chips, and the salsas, while flavorful, are too thin. The front of the house drives me nuts. It's confusing and inefficient. It wouldn't take much to make this part of the operation smooth and comfortable for diners; just a velvet rope and a few well-placed signs, or a host directing traffic. read more

We had a crazy long wait on a Friday night and the staff seemed like we were putting them out. They just did not seem happy to be there. The salsa is unique and original, but the chips are out of the package. The drinks are very good. I really like the strawberry horchata. Hooray for a one stop shop for Mexican food AND kayaking! No one thing here stands out as amazing, but the mere fact that this place exists is four star-worthy. Easy kayak rentals, great location for a quick paddle either to the arboretum or Lake Union, and casual decent Mexican food! Of course I did go in the middle of a work day so I didn't have to fight the crowds. I did, however, have to park three blocks away, pay for parking, and worry the whole time I was kayaking that I would get a parking ticket since it maxes out at 2 hrs. Please do give this great place a try if you are looking for delicious Mexican food where the focus is on thoughtfully-sourced ingredients, unique while authentic flavors (e.g. house-made masa crafted with maiz sourced from Oaxaca, a team that travels around Mexico for inspiration for new dishes, and that seeks out organically grown ingredients wherever possible), and flavor, flavor, flavor. My husband ordered the machete, which was kind of like a huarache or sope, except bigger, and folded like a quesadilla, stuffed with authentic Oaxacan cheese, and perfectly grilled steak and peppers. I had butternut squash enchiladas made with house-made, fresh-masa corn tortillas, a DELICIOUS, creamy butternut squash sauce, stuffed generously with grilled veggies, and topped with a pretty sprinkle of pomegranate seeds. The creamy and flavorful whole beans (no refried bean mush here!) were the perfect complement. The dish reminded me of the chiles en nogada I enjoyed while in Oaxaca, except the infusion of butternut squash in the sauce added a wonderful hint of sweetness that balanced so nicely with the peppers. We stopped in to eat just before closing, and had the good fortune to be able to chat with the new manager, Juan. He provided amazing service, and described some of the exciting new changes to the restaurant, such as the fact that there is now full patio dining in the warmer seasons to fully capitalize on the beautiful waterfront location, and even more authentic and varied Mexican flair to the food and beverage menus, with inspirations from Oaxaca, Jalisco, and Mexico City. Great place for good Mexican fare when in Seattle. Especially if its a sunny day when you can sit outside and enjoy the waterfront. its a little harder to get to without a car being in the U district and all but we managed to figure out the busses to get too and from the area. Agua Verde is the only place that I have been to where I can eat amazingly fresh food, and then go for an informative workout after wards! I got the chance to experience this establishment at a work event. We had Agua Verde provide the food and went with an open bar. We also reserved a large number of kayaks and a tour guide. Our group was roughly 60 people, and there were no complaints whatsoever. Food: I tried the Kabobs, seafood enchiladas with white sauce, taquitos, the house salad, and the mango quesadillas. I have never tasted Mexican inspired food that was this fresh. Everything tasted as if it came right out of the farm and straight to my plate. The fruit, the veggies, and even the meats were so flavorful, and something I have not experienced in Washington in a restaurant besides our usual local produce. Drinks: For drinks I had the Baja Sun Set and the Seattle Sun Set. Both were a type of Margarita and fantabulous! Tour: Of the water choices I chose the tour with a small group of people from our team. Our tour guide was really friendly and kept it interesting. The tour lasted about 2 hours and we went around the house boats, by UW campus and under the 520 bridge. We saw a lot of hidden gems on the water, and definitely some place I will be visiting again. Overall I am absolutely in love with this place. With amazing food, staff, and entertainment options it will bring me back, and I recommend that everyone give this place a shot! read more

I recently visited my sister in Seattle, and she insisted that we lunch at Agua Verde. She said that Rachael Ray loves it. Now I do, too! I had the fish taco: Bacalao - fried cod in a coconut tempura beer batter, cabbage, and creamy avocado sauce, and a side of pinto beans and rice. Everything was perfect, except that the rice seemed to be of the Minute or Uncle Ben variety. My sister preferred my meal, but I can't remember what she had. She really didn't like it because it was too spicy. Anyway, I had the key lime pie for dessert--it was heavenly! Love the choices of seating areas. Restaurant only: First, let me say that I've been going to Agua Verde for years and years. There is a small park near its deck (and just beside where they rent kayaks) where I and many people I know have sat when the deck is full or just when we've had the inclination. We often ordered a beer or drink and snuck it out there. There are receptacles set up at the park as if it is part of the restaurant. I enjoy the food at Agua Verde and the service is often good. The owner and management staff are another story. During this particular instance, we chose to do take-out, order beers and sit at the park. Of course, technically, you're not allowed to drink in a public park; however, since I'd been to Golden Gardens the weekend before (where people are openly drinking at a public park), and near the arboretum countless times when couples enjoy drinks with their picnics, I've always understood this to be a bit of a grey area - i.e. it's enforced when it needs to be but otherwise most people are left alone. Not 20 feet from the picnic table we'd chosen to sit at the restaurant was hosting some private party in a temporary tent. Outside of the tent, the partygoers were spilling out, holding wine, beer and mixed drinks as they strolled the public sidewalk, even walking by where we were sitting. So, we were surprised when the 'owner' of Agua Verde came out and ranted about us because "this isn't Vegas" and "it's a $30,000 fine". He was smug and condescending. Understandably, I'm sure he may deal with this often, but why is it his problem? Won't I get the ticket if a police officer decides to single me out? Why is it okay for the partygoers to wander the park and the sidewalk with drinks in hand, but such a crime to sip a beer at the picnic table? If he is so concerned about it, why not police everyone? To be honest, I have sat out there countless times over the years - they've just ignored that some people quietly sneak beer out there. I have no problem being told I'm not allowed to do something, but do so reasonably and universally. If you can't drink at public parks, then you can't drink at public parks (I think that's a shame). If Agua Verde will get in trouble if people have alcoholic drinks outside the restaurant then don't come lecture me while at the same time you host a party encouraging it. Finally, we agreed immediately with the 'owner' when he came out to talk with us, since we know the law; however, he just wouldn't shut-up. One of the better places to get Mexican food in the area. Got a carne asada burrito which comes with chips and a jamaica to go. Got extra salsa on the side: $1.75 for maybe 2 ounces of salsa?? Jamaica drink was mostly ice. Ridiculous. At least offer a bigger size for the drink so people can drink it through out the meal. Overall, this place has good food but it is all overpriced. I think if you come here you should come during the summer and just use the paddle club. Food is a hit or a miss and it's pretty pricey. The first few times I came here which was years ago, I was not at all impressed with the food. I then came back this summer and had a really great experience. We sat outside on the deck overlooking the lake and watching kayaking groups take off. There was a long line to get a seat and we just lucked out on getting ours in a good location. We had to stand in line to order and there really wasn't much service. I ordered beef tacos but got something else. Not sure what the dish was called but it had mushrooms in it and boy was it delishious! Since I liked the meal, I didn't complain about the fact that it was not what I ordered. I came back this month and all I could think about was that great mushroom dish. But when I tried to find it on the menu, I wasn't sure which mushroom dish it was. I ordered the mushroom quesadillas with cheese and spinach. But that wasn't it and it tasted awful. I'm hoping one day I'll find that dish again :) read more

I have been here a couple of times. Any summer and spring weather make this place a destination spot for many. Don't let the three stars scare you- I still recommend that you go and try it out- Maybe do take-out and head to a nearby dock... There is a take out window that serves the outside with certain hours. I have never used this. There is a al carte line to the left of the entrance we have ordered from here and got good fish tacos. There is also a host station that will sit you right away or give you a beeper to call you back from your wandering or standing when you table is ready. This is most useful for waiting for a deck (which is covered) table when it is sunny out. The view is the harbor and lots and lots of boats. I have heard rumors of a bar section that you take your ordered al carte drinks and food to so you can chill out in the sun, but have not found or enjoyed it. There is a salsa bar with three types... I love each one of them. The happy hour runs from 4-6 with cheap margaritas and things like nachos and quesadillas- they even have a mangodilla with green onion and the tasty fruit. The hh food is around $4-6. The dinner menu has traditional food you'll find at most Mexican restaurants with a few new flavors thrown in and a few unique items like portabella mushroom, yam, and veggie tacos etc. There is free parking in a dirt lot across the street after 5pm that is labeled for the UW. There is kayaks and canoes for rent below the restaurant on the water. Try it- it doesn't rock- but it has a great vibe going in the summer even though my lack of service last time I went made me a little annoyed. read more

I looooove Agua Verde! I can't believe I've gone so long without actually reviewing it because I come here a lot. I've never really found a true favourite on the menu and typically just order something different every time, but I've never been disappointed. I had the pollo relleno one time when it was a lunch special and it was wonderful even later as leftovers. The black beans are kind of on the watery side, which made it really awkward for me to eat with rice, but they're still good. I think they put parmesan or some random cheese on top which actually adds a unique touch (unless this is actually commonplace? I've never observed it anywhere else). Their salsa bar is fantastic-- I like the green one the best, but always get all three. I don't recommend getting their limonada. It was classic tangy BBQ pulled pork...in a taco. It wasn't gross...just wasn't expected and wasn't mexican to me. My wife got the shrimp tacos which were much better. Chips and guacamole are recommended here and i devoured them. This place is busy and the line is not set up for optimal waiting so beware on a cold day or if you are with impatient kids. I want to start off by noting - the two times that I have come here for lunch, I was unadventurous and ordered a quesadilla, so my rating/review may be a bit biased. The food was definitely not bad, but it did not blow my socks off either. During one visit, my friend and I ate inside. This gave me the chance to try some salsa from their salsa bar. The salsa bar is a good idea, but I found their salsa to be really sweet, like they had added a bunch of sugar. We also ordered margaritas, which I found to be watered down. During my other visit, I ordered from the walk-up window. It would seem that the walk-up window would be fast and convenient, perfect for grabbing a quick lunch before work, but I had to wait for awhile out in the snow. I ordered a quesadilla - how long does it take to melt some cheese on a tortilla?! The service at the walk up window was also not the best. First of all, I stood at the window for awhile before anyone came to take my order, which would not have been that big of a deal if they were super busy, but some employees blatantly looked me in the eye and then walked away. The man that took my order was not really rude, but I would not call him friendly. There was no hello and when he gave me my food he simply said "here" - there was no "would you like some salsa?" or "have a nice day!". As for the paddle club, I give them 5 STARS! The staff is always friendly and are careful to go over safety procedures. My brother requests Agua Verde whenever he's in town, so off to Agua Verde we go. The Mangodila is his favorite. I like the atypical Mexian menu, but my husband would have preferred his old favorites. The mushroom tacos, in my opinion, are worth the wait. Well, maybe the wait on a weekday. The crowds can be waaay too much, making the restaurant too hot and too noisy. But the tacos! Oh! The tacos! The yam and fish ones are good too. And the creamy chile potatoes--they're the best mashed potatoes I've found. The views are good, and the kayak rentals are fun and efficient. The food is excellent. But the long lines and packed rooms may outweigh the positives--especially when, as we do, you have to drive a bit to get there. Verdict: go for lunch, or early or late on a weeknight. read more

I'm going to split this up between the restaurant and the kayaking Restaurant: The restaurant looks tiny, but it actually is quite spacious, partly because it has more turns than directions to a Tijuana bathroom. Ordering is a fairly easy and painless process, with drinks, food, and specials laid out right in front of you (either on the board or on a pickup menu). Once ordered, go sit down, and expect chips to appear within a minute or two, drinks within three, and food within 10 at most (of course, if there's a Seattlelite convention, it might be a longer wait). The food is pretty tasty, and the margaritas are definitely worth any small aggravation you may encounter. Most people I know love to come here for just the food, but for me, it makes it so much better if I eat knowing I'll be out on the water in a bit, or if I'm coming back from kayaking Kayaking: There's not too much to describe, as you walk up, give your information, and go get your kayak. The staff are very friendly, and Agua Verde's location makes it one of the best rental locations, giving you full range of access to the Arboretum, or simply for a zip through the Cut. The attendants will help any newbies get comfortably situated in the kayaks, and help you secure all your (hopefully waterproof) gear in the netting. The prices are a tad steep (compared with Green Lake), but given that you have sea kayaks with full protective covering (not just vests, but spray skirts too), it's worth it. Let me tell you the main purpose of visiting Agua Verde. We went there for kayaking in a slightly overcast weather. We were very apprehensive about that instead it turn out to be in our favour. We were a group of 5 people with no experience in Kayaking. The place is set in a very pictursque enviornment. There was only one person responsible for manging everything. He was very friendly who made us very comfortable about kayaking. He taught us how to get in and get out of kayak. That was helpful but taught us nothing about rowing acutally. I thought that kind of suck but actually it doesnt make a big difference. In the end, I would recommend anybody to go and try their hand at kayaking at agua verde. Beause of overcast weather, there were not that many people over there so parking wasnt a problem. After kayaking for 1-1/2 hour which is kind of cheap if you are an occasional kayaker, we tried their food. It's pretty good and best is their beans. Once in the door seating was quick, scoring a seat on the deck a plus. Ear-ringing loud, I regretted I didn't have ear plugs. The waitress was great but had too many tables. The tacos at Agua Verde are SO tasty! You can enjoy them while you sit either inside or on the semi-enclosed (as in, protected from potential Seattle rain) patio or inside the dining area. The place looks tiny from the street (from Boat St), but it actually opens up into a large space and great views of the water. There are lots of different kinds of tacos--fish, meat, completely vegetarian. The setting is casual: order at the counter and they bring it out to you. This is a great place to meet for a casual business lunch, or to get together with friends. I just read a really bad review of this place ... which makes me sad because I love it! I always get their yam tacos - not sure what the official name is. I like the food because it's not greasy or topped with cheese, sour cream, and all that stuff that makes you feel sick later. My friends love the mango quesadillas - their margaritas are good too. It's best on a sunny day when you can sit on their patio overlooking Portage Bay, but I went mid-week in the winter and they had a live salsa band, which was fun. You get waited on at night (I think they do a fine job) and during the day you order at the counter. They were very accommodating when 15 of my law school colleagues and I showed up for lunch one day. They let us push tables together on the deck and sit out there for quite some time. It's true - they charge you for chips, but I personally always eat too many chips and ruin my meal. Even the salsas are sweet....that's a little much for me, but whatevs. I don't like the overly sweet overtones to the food, but that is just personal preference I suppose. Add a little mango and pineapple and all of a sudden we can kid ourselves into thinking it is healthier than Azteca! Woo. I like a lot of their menu - yam tacos (boniato) are good. But I have a little beef with this one waiter that I ALWAYS get each time I come in. He's just a rude little fellow and I keep wanting to call him out, but each time I don't call him out and then I just get resentful, hence me coming on Yelp to gripe about him. My buddy who went with me actually fell in the water when he was trying to get out of his Kayak to help me fix my foot pedals. Lucky for both of us he took his phone and my camera out of his pockets bf trying to get out. Theres things in life that make me realize that I'm not 20 and not all food is "the bomb" when sober. Aqua Verde brought me to this vision, once again... as many things do. Look, you guys cant live off salsa alone. Everybody knows the salsas are good but drowning your food in salsa is not good. The salsa are good but their not sick good. You got a rosted sweet one, a mild green one and a thin spicy tomato one. BFD. Chicken mole in a burrito tasting more of a recipe laced with BBQ sauce. Don't fake tradition. Lightly steamed corn tortilla tasting like it just came out the wrapper. Its better when you warm it on the grill, make it charred and soft. The fish itself drier than canned tuna but similiar texture ; and the cream gauc sauce? What was that. Is that mayo driven? This ain't Mexican food. Another white interpretation. Stoners delight. Margarita's on the weak side, tasting more like watered down lime aid. if youre into overpriced gut bombs this is your place. I give it two stars instead of one because it didn't make me sick. This University District located Mexican restaurant has kayak rentals for either one or two people. Its the perfect destination for working off some calories or working up an appetite to make your food taste better and leave you feeling less guilty. They also now have paddleboarding. Hours are limited outside of the summer months, but its pretty cold on the water anyhow. Great way to combine a fun meal and some excercise. Good vegetarian options. Best of all you can even boat up in your own small craft and get some food if you get hungry out on the water. read more

A friend recommended them when we were looking for a good restaurant that we could take to go for a group of 11. I got the carne asada plate and it was delicious! It was cooked to a perfect medium and it had a good amount of salad and a generous portion of rice. It was delicious! They were able to accommodate the large take out order but I am docking them one star because they forgot our chips! :( I will definitely be coming back. read more
