On one of my days off from work back in May I headed to Aina Haina Shopping Center to meet up with a friend. I arrived there via bus. As I made my way off the bus and into the shopping center I noticed Foodland Farms, McDonalds, and a bunch of other businesses. I continued to walk on the pathway and spotted Pieology Pizzeria...someday I'll do a return visit and try one of their pizzas. There's a small section with tables between Pieology Pizzeria and Mama Pho. People can talk story to each other while enjoying their meal. I continued walking and noticed there's a small gym and a pet clinic. I also noticed a public library. There's plenty parking at this shopping center. Customers can fill up their vehicles at the gas station if needed. 21/100

Lots of shops left and the place is always messy. Uncle Clays, Foodland and Starbucks are still worth visiting though.

Very safe location. Parking lot is very clean. Parking lot has speed bumps. Parking lot has fire hydrant. There's a Starbucks. Not to forget this a public library here too. Public transportation is in walking distance. The Pacific ocean is in walking distance.

As you pull into the parking lot.

Not sure of the high marks. Traffic is funneled through only two entrances. Parking is non existent. Nothing that great in here.

Somehow, this mall has retained its midcentury style, without overdoing it. A nice selection of stores, with a friendly, small-town feel.

This small shopping mall sits between Aina Haina shopping center in Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai Towne Center & Koko Marina center in Hawaii Kai. It's a quaint little strip mall, anchored by a church, 7-Eleven convience store, and the Jack in the Box along Kalanianaole Highway. You may miss it if you're not looking for it, but it is a shopping hub, that's basically a food / restaurant stop for anyone and everyone who needs to stop here and pick up daily necessities. With that said, the Niu Valley shopping center isn't really a shopping center, just a collection of restaurants that come together to bring the community some variety in between Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai just so you don't have to travel too far into town to get what you need. I've come here twice already in the year 2020 just to check things out in the area. I noticed a couple of new additions in 2020 April, especially a new Vietnamese restaurant called "Pho Time" as well as two Japanese restaurants, called Café Asia and Gyotaku. Jack in the Box fast food restaurant has been around the property as far as I can remember - as well as the King's Chapel church. The 7-Eleven conveience store has been around for a solid number of years too. If you pass this strip mall, you're missing on a lot of potentially good eats here in east Oahu. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley shopping center can be described as underwhelming at best. While the shopping center is very much open air, it does lack that certain appeal when it comes to closed air conditioned shopping mall venues like Pearlridge shopping center and Kahala Mall, to name a few on the island. I arrived here around 1pm on separate occassions on April 2020 searching for cheap eats. The first time I discovered for the first time - Pho Time, which I assumed is relatively brand new or at least 6 months new. I can be sure that I'll be back to try this place when this pandemic is contained. Both experiences here on a Sunday afternoon seemed to be dead at best, but at least there was a few people roaming about and there was parked cars and a line of cars snaking through the Jack in the Box drive thru lane. Signs of life here on a weekend is nice, especially during a crisis. It was still quiet though, albeit eerie to see. Everything was take out only, but at least the restaurants were open. Just can't sit down and dine in though. Even the King's Church was closed for services. I'm sure it's like that across the island. You probably woudn't think it is a shopping center if you were crusing on by Kalanianaole Highway, but it's here open for your business. Come on by if you are in the area. The good thing about Niu Valley shopping center is that there is plenty of parking stalls here. Plenty for y'all to go shopping and your take out meals during this phase of year 2020. Since services for King's Church won't be held for a while, you can come here on the way home or on the way to work to pick up lunches or dinners whenever you can during this "stay-at-home" quarantine we have in place since March 25, 2020. I'm so grateful that many restaurants are open for take-out to help the community through this tough uncertain time we all are facing. I guess what makes us stronger will help us carry through this ordeal and onward to better days ahead. For me though, the shopping center doesn't feel like a real mall. Just a couple of buildings that is home to a few restaurants and a big parking lot, along with a church within a residential area and Kalanianaole Highway. While not a contemporary shopping center that you know and love like Ala Moana or even Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Niu Valley shopping center serves the community surrounding it without having to travel too far for basic stuff for everyday living. I know I spent about an hour here buying my meals while I was here and checking out the restaurants I plan on coming back to when this pandemic is more under control and we can do siit down dining again. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the asthetic appeal, but the community needs are there. I am glad that there is a Vietnamese restaurant I can come to that I haven't tried yet near home. Support local! B

I'm glad i was able to capture some memories with happier times when she was somewhat healthier. On Thursdays - they have farmers markets in the evening. Don't forget to bring cash with you (which i totally forgot). There are some food vendors that will take credit card tho. Recently they've been throwing little events around Kailua town too. The lei bus has been there in the past and we went to go do our free photo op with them in February. This past week they had the sip and shop over the weekend. You collect stamps around Kailua town (a lanyard is provided) and you can win a $500 gift card for completion. You can get a bunch of freebies with the lanyard too! There was mocktails, a lot of drinks, cotton candy, and shave ice! The Lei bus was also there again too for the cute photo op. it was really busy at this event since the farmers market was also happening that night, so parking was a little limited compared to other days.

L & L Hawaiian Barbecue is a tried and true place for plate lunches and it did not disappoint. The food was fresh and hot - and as a former resident of Oahu, mac salad and rice is a treat. For a burger rush, we ate the Mahaloha burger - certified Angus beef and again, it was hot and delicious. Their fries were great as well. My brother-in-law asked about a malasadas and told him that it is more or less a doughnut but was brought to Hawaii by the Portuguese who came to work the fields back a hundred or so years ago. It's sold all over the islands now. When I lived here in the '70's, a food truck parked itself in a parking lot and people lined up to buy it. When they ran out, that was it until the next time and it was not everyday. Penny's malasadas was good and delicious. It was hot and sooo ono, as we say it in the islands! There's a price to pay for the delicious food though - and it's not cheap! So go try, yeah!

High end stores, high end restaurants and other great things like art exhibits. Now that I live in California, I do visit Oahu every two years. At the time when we came here in 2019, we went to a photography exhibit by National Geographic. Now this is something I enjoy. I think tourists could enjoy it too and bring in the modernized look for Waikiki. I have been on the fence about the traditional vendors over these overpriced high end stores. I look at it in a business perspective. Hawaii drives its economy through tourism. We are in the United States of America and you got major cities like New York, Miami, Los Angeles and such. It's competing for more tourists to come to Hawaii. I hate to say this but Hawaii versus Miami? You got people with money that spend at high end stores. People now look at Waikiki like you're shopping on Rodeo Drive. Well if this is what attracts tourists - so be it to help the economy. It is a shame that it has to be this way to survive in this economy. The workers in Waikiki have pride in their job and make an honest living in an expensive state. I do miss the old International Marketplace. It was nice seeing vendors sell things.
