The perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of commercialized Waikīkī. Glowing tiki torches, it captures my every step. Curiosity takes hold of me as my eyes gaze towards wooden kiosks. They're closely knit, all selling a hodge-podge of brick-a-brac island-style pieces geared towards tourists. A jumbled assortment of curiosities, memorabilia and trinkets of remembrance. Cheap shell leis, carved wooden tikis, jewelry of all sorts, handmade items. Displays of bright Aloha attire and accessories complete the shopping experience from stores along the perimeter. Vendors chatting, laughter in the distance. A comforting hum, a laid-back vibe. Unpretentious and deeply welcoming. All centered around a grand, massive 100+ year old banyan tree. Balanced on urban living, it was a connection to the social fabric of Honolulu. Nostalgic, charming, extremely unique. This was the original International Marketplace in Waikīkī. From 1956 to 2013. I remember it vividly. Do you? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I grew up coming to this open-air marketplace. Eclectic shops and a food court. This place had personality, charm, island-style warmth. I frequented this spot from childhood into young adulthood when traveling from the Big Island of Hawai'i and during my university days at Mānoa. Memories with my family as a kid, with my college friends many years later. Having a quick meal as an adult at the International Marketplace food court while employed in Waikīkī. It was a spot for cheap eats in a relaxed setting. I've watched musical diva and Hawai'i legend, Melveen Leed perform many times. My parents still remember watching Don Ho here. At the original International Marketplace back in the day. Precious memories. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Now it's a blend of fresh air and natural light on three floors. Polished, refined with modern touches. Still offering a lively yet sweet escape with a fluid layout and an unconfined atmosphere. Reimagined and reopened in 2016. Home to major brands and unique local boutiques. A shopping and dining destination. Exhibits and the century-old banyan tree trace the rich heritage of Waikīkī. Entertainment welcomes visitors and kama'aina like myself to this gathering place. I've dined multiple times on the third floor Grand Lānai. Featuring chef-driven restaurants and local cuisine. Casual food concepts line the Kūhīo Avenue Food Hall on the first floor. Breakfast, lunch or dining under the stars. There's something for everyone. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Since reopening in 2016 after a three-year construction phase, I've returned back a handful of times to the International Marketplace. Do I miss the version I grew-up with? Of course. But I understand why redevelopment was sought. It's prime real estate in the heart of Waikīkī. Physical expansion and a multi-million dollar modernization to capture high spending visitors as tourism and revenue shifts in Hawai'i. Honestly, I've shopped and dined at this modern version of the International Marketplace more times than the one I grew up with. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Revisit the International Marketplace like I have and embrace the transformed landscape. We parked in this structure since we needed to go to one shop and then have lunch in Waikiki. Several levels of parking you can pay at the kiosk next to the elevators. Also restrooms on the first floor on the left as you exit the elevators. If you make a $25 purchase you can get a reduced rate to park by scanning your receipt ie $20 parking ticket becomes $6 for 3 hours. read more

This shopping area was founded in 1956 by Donn Beach, the creator of the famed Don the Beachcomber's cocktail. The original IMP consisted of thatched-roof huts offering souvenirs, local crafts, and food. A major renovation in 2016 transformed the IMP into a contemporary shopping and dining destination while still respecitng its Hawaiian heritage. The banyan tree in the shopping center is really impressive. A banyan can reach a height up to 100 feet and spreads laterally indefinitely. Aerial roots that develop from its branches descend and take root in the soil to become new trunks. It's really a highlight of this mall to walk around this enormous tree. There are a huge number of well known stores here with something for everyone. We enjoyed the shopping but did not stay to eat here although there are a lot of options. read more

Starting as a tiki-themed Polynesian village selling crafts and souvenirs in 1956, it was closed for renovation in 2013. It reopened in 2016 as an upscale open air mall, very much resembling the many other malls in the downtown Honolulu area. Our group of four stopped in for shopping and lunch (restaurants are on the third floor) on our port day. We had initially used it as a marker for our Lyft ride to the Waikiki area from the cruise port (cost about $24 one-way). Its location is very good, allowing easy access for all the tourists staying in the area. It doesn't have any anchor stores, per se. Some of the larger tenants are the two story Target store, the Rakuten lounge for holders of a Rakuten credit card, and a Mitsuwa Japanese market place. The company responsible for development and operations is the Simon Property Group, biggest owner of retail outlet malls in the U.S. read more

We visited the International Market Place several times when we were in Honolulu and we tried several of the restaurants there. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area. I miss the old International Market Place, except for the kiosks that sell Hawaiian souvenirs that are made in China. Ever since I came back, it has turned into a modern Bay Area mall. I'm glad they kept the Banyan Tree. Most of the shops are aimed towards rich tourists who are willing to spend on luxurious brands. They do have my favorites like Liliha Bakery, Kona Coffee Purveyors, Mitsuwa Marketplace, and Magnolia Ice Cream (the only official store I could find in the US). If you want to shop and support local retailers, I recommend Crazy Shirts and Hawaiian Island Creations, and Malie. Okay, including tanned Hello Kitty from the ABC Store. I heard they opened a Food Hall a few years ago, so I gotta visit when I come back home. It's like a mini food court serving a variety of different take-out cuisines. They even have free entertainment and activities like lei making, including a luau for tourists. read more

We had a fun time exploring this shopping center. There are multiple levels and a mix of high end, gift shops, restaurants, coffee, and more. We loved that there is a beautiful banyan tree in the middle of one of the entrances. It is absolutely breathtaking. Some highlights are visiting Liliha Bakery, Coco Nene, and Kona Coffee Purveyors. This was also a nice little shortcut from the main street back to our hotel. We walked through while they were having a Luau one night and they block the show off from the main level, but people were watching from the floors above. I grew up on Oahu and it was a big surprise for me to see they've gotten rid of the small vendors and turned this area into a shopping mall. It's a big surprise for me. High end stores, high end restaurants and other great things like art exhibits. Now that I live in California, I do visit Oahu every two years. At the time when we came here in 2019, we went to a photography exhibit by National Geographic. Now this is something I enjoy. I think tourists could enjoy it too and bring in the modernized look for Waikiki. I have been on the fence about the traditional vendors over these overpriced high end stores. I look at it in a business perspective. Hawaii drives its economy through tourism. We are in the United States of America and you got major cities like New York, Miami, Los Angeles and such. It's competing for more tourists to come to Hawaii. I hate to say this but Hawaii versus Miami? You got people with money that spend at high end stores. People now look at Waikiki like you're shopping on Rodeo Drive. Well if this is what attracts tourists - so be it to help the economy. It is a shame that it has to be this way to survive in this economy. The workers in Waikiki have pride in their job and make an honest living in an expensive state. I do miss the old International Marketplace. It was nice seeing vendors sell things. read more

My family always comes to this mall at least once when we visit Oahu. It's filled with plenty of great places to eat with fancier restaurants, a food court with more casual places and lots of great people watching. However, as someone who has watched Oahu change over the decades, I miss the old Market Place which was truly an outdoor mall with local merchants and their kiosks. The business model has obviously changed over to a high-end mall with luxury stores mixed in with some local Hawaiian companies like Honolulu Cookie Co. I don't know about you but I already have spent a bit of $$ to get to Oahu. I am not rich enough to shell out more for luxury items and brands that they sell here. There is a Target inside the mall if you need to pick up random stuff that you might need and isn't sold at ABC stores. There is also a Tesla store in case you need to buy a car or came to Waikiki to order one back home? They did manage to keep the Banyan trees and built the mall around them. There is a parking lot garage that validates for paying customers, if you are not staying within walking distance of the all. All in all, this seems mostly like a place to window shop or splurge if you can afford that. read more

I always have to make a stop here to take a quick pic in front of the sign. Sometimes they have cute lit signs around the plaza for a photo op. Certain nights they have luaus that you can watch from the second floor. Free sunset hula shows on certain nights, sometimes free activities as well. International Market is a good sized shopping mall that has a variety of shopping, food, and events going on at this establishment. Theres two sides to this mall. One side you're entering in from Kuhio, and if you go through the mall, which is in a bit of a slant, takes you directly to the street that Waikiki beach is on, just a few blocks left from the exit and you're there. There's lots of name brand shops that can be found here, and some decent eating spots o. The first, and third floors of this mall. The second floor is mostly shopping and shops, while floor 1 is a mixture of them depending on which side you're on. But the third floor is dedicated to eateries. Target is also here, so for those who need to shop got amenities and basics, this is a good spot around the corner. I would recommend dropping by here if you're not sure what to do, or just feel like a nice lazy day. It's definitely no Alo Moana, but it's far less crowded, and offers a variety of things of their own. read more

The shops are alright, but today when I went so many of their parking machines were out of order. And the machine at the exit wouldn't accept our Target validation (we tried for a good 5 minutes). Gorgeous people everywhere, and the entire plaza is immaculately clean. A very safe, upscale experience. Also beautiful natural spaces with big trees and a nice waterfall. I personally like the current version and don't miss the old vending carts. The market offers a nice variety of shops and eateries. The International Market Place is an outdoor mall that houses a variety of retail shops and restaurants - I was pleasantly surprised to find a Mitsuwa, Balenciaga, Liliha Bakery, and a Vince store! The place itself is multi-level, and the greenery and the floral arrangements decorate the place well. This is a nice little mall in Waikiki Beach. There is metered street parking and commercial garages available within a reasonable walking distance. The Mall dates back to 1956. It was reopened in 2016 after a 3-year hiatus for renovations. It boasts being home to about 200 stores, is three levels and is 345,000 square feet. This is an open air mall and has lots of comfortable seating placed around, including a patio area with seating on the second level. There are couches, rocking chair and lounges on the first level. You will also find a staffed information desk on the first level, as well as the Market's food court. The food court is heavy on bars and also has a barbecue joint, and a burger joint. I really like the food court and have frequently ate at the restaurants there. The Mall's anchor is Target. A few of the other stores include: Lids, Abercrombie and Fitch, Pandora, Telsa, Sunglass Hut, Vans, Shoe Place, Pandora, Hollister, Foot Locker, Avis, Budget, and ABC stores. There is also an ice cream shop, a market, a night club, a magic show, and toy store here too. I did not see much security walking around, but I also did not see a need for secuity while I was at the Marketplace. The Marketplace is very clean and has a nature like feel to it. I really like the trees (especially the 100+ year old Banyan tree), landscaping and water feature that runs down to the main level. There are a few statues in the mall, as well as a green space area, known as the Queen's Court, where they hold events such as Queens Waikiki Luʻau and free Lei-making Workshop. I recommend checking this place out while you are in Waikiki. There is something for everyone here. read more

Long overdue but my review years after the renovation has nothing but positive things to say. Firstly, they kept the beautiful tree and worked around this natural monument. It not only symbolizes preservation but also progression. We can modernize parts of Hawaii without completely destroying culture and tradition. Secondly, the facility is beautiful and well-maintained. The little ponds and vegetation in the middle area on the first floor are such a nice touch. But even throughout the floors, the plants and greenery definitely give this mall a feeling that we are still on Hawaii. Thirdly, I do appreciate the push for variety of stores the past few years. At first, I did see this mall as a high-end mall I didn't ever think I'd shop at. But lately, they've been adding more affordable stores and eateries that have now become options on the weekend. The only thing that really can't be helped is the parking. On event nights, it gets packed. Thankfully, I can keep up with the mall's or restaraunts' social media to see if I should avoid or not. The parking is one thing but the fights that breakout are also another reason to steer clear. Of course, these happen at like 2/3AM but still, it's a deterrent for sure. I am glad to give this mall a long overdue review that I believe it deserves. I'm glad it is thriving and still here. Without it, Waikiki would lose a place to hang and do stuff at. The Banyan Tree at the International Market Place was planted in the mid-1800s by Henry and Eliza McFarlane. It has now grown to a height of 18 The establishment of Waikiki Village, the predecessor of the International Marketplace, began with the construction of the Dagger Bar and the Bazaar Building in 1956. Don Beach is a contributor to the development of Waikiki Village. He built a tree house in the Banyan Tree and worked while living there for the first time. The Banyan Tree has been a symbol of the Waikiki Village, which later developed into an international marketplace; it became popular with many people and has grown increasingly famous. Entertainers performed and danced under the banyan tree every day, and on Sundays they performed a luau on the beach, so it quickly became known to tourists as symbolic of entertainment in Waikiki. Waikiki Village has introduced the cultures of Hawaii and Polynesia to many people while mingling tradition with the modern era It still passes along these cultural expressions in Waikiki. It's inevitable that this historic/iconic location and marketplace would go super commercial from what it once was. But honestly, I'm not complaining. I think they've done a great job with the place, adding three floors of shopping & dining real estate, while connecting Kuhio & Kalakaua Avenues. I think the place is beautiful! I LOVE how they kept the original banyan trees and that there is a historic section on the 2nd floor, paying tribute to the history and people. I LOVE that there are many sitting areas to get comfortable and enjoy, like the shaded rocking chairs on the 2nd floor overlooking central stage or the covered "cabana-like" seating on the 3rd floor. Overall, I enjoy going to International Marketplace when in Waikiki. For those who miss the old one, you can find the old vendor carts on Dukes Lane. It's called, Duke's Marketplace. Impressive! Quite impressive actually! What a nice little open-air mall to walk through. It reminded me of some of the large outdoor shopping malls (or plazas) in SoCal, in both L.A. and Orange County. They have your typical high-end designer stores that I don't really care about anymore; Down to your small, not so cheap anymore, convenient store like ABC. And a mix of different stores. I believe one of their anchor stores is Mitsuwa, but to me they are their own adventurous market. There's lots to shop for, or eat at inside there as well. For food and dining, you have the options of something quick at the food court. In which I noticed a wide variety of options to choose from. Everything from burritos, to Greek, to hoagie sandwiches, to pizza, coffee, beer, etc. Or you have the higher end restaurants at the top floor! We actually ate at the Eating House 1849 (review pending) and picked up yummy pastries from Liliha Bakery. We Uber'd here, so i cannot really comment about parking. But really, it's pretty walkable from your hotel or from the beach I'd say. To me, the highlight was seeing the old historical banyan tree and the little tree house. This tree was massive and simply classic. A tree that has seen it all, loved it. Again, I'm all about the walking aspect of the place. You'll easily add 5,000+ steps just walking and taking the escalators up ever floor. read more
