Within minutes of posting my initial review, I was called by Alex, the owner of Airmaxx and the individual that responded to the service call that resulted in that review. Alex is a concerned business owner, and being upset with a low rating, was desirous of protecting his business. As a business owner going on thirty years myself, I understand that. Alex, you might want to moderate your tone of voice and intensity should you choose to make another call like that to some future customer.
Alex's initial visit suggested cleaning the condensate drain line and replacing the capacitor (which his meter tested as functioning, which was a significant factor in my initial review). I couldn't see how replacing a functioning capacitor would make my system work. During this phone call he asked me what he could do. I said that he could come out and clear the condensate drain line and I would pay him the $100 or so ($345 initial quote, less his rate of $250 to replace a capacitor). My thinking was that perhaps the clogged drain line could be causing my problems (everything seemed to be working, but the system was not cooling). He agreed to return yesterday afternoon.
Alex returned and immediately started working on the condensate drain line without offering a quote. It was clogged and he showed me his work as he performed it. Meantime, the system had been running since his visit in the morning and seemed to be working okay, but not great, which had been the reason for the call. Alex asked about the filter again, which I repeated to him that I had removed and washed earlier in the week as it was dirty. I had told him this on his earlier visit in the morning. I had been researching what to do when an air conditioning system is running, but not blowing cold air. At some point he went outside to the condenser coils and saw ice building up on one of the lines. He then opened the air handler (where the filter is) and said that the filter was not properly covering the air intake opening. Upon further inspection, he found an accumulation of dust and dirt on the fan in the air handler. He suspected that the evaporator coils were also covered in dust and dirt but the air handler had a difficult to remove cover on it. After removing the cover, Alex removed another cover to expose the evaporator coils which were indeed covered in dust and dirt. He said it was also frozen and needed to defrost. He said he would have his installer come out the next morning (this morning, a Saturday) to finish the job on his installer's day off.
Alex said, many times, I'm doing you a favor. I'm doing all of this work without charging you. I offered to pay him for his work and he declined. He said something about not quoting me a price up front. The thing was, I never asked him to do any of this. He just started opening the air handler and looking at things. He said, all of this would have cost you $800. (After this I searched "Cost to clean AC coils" and found estimates of $100-$400 on homeadvisor.com). He then asked me to remove my review.
I am a reasonable person. There was nothing incorrect or not factual about my review. Alex was speaking to me with a raised voice in my own garage, pleading with me to remove my review and repeating that he was doing me a favor here. I again offered to pay him for his services and he declined again. I understand that his livelihood depends to a certain extent on good reviews. I know that he also understands that to get good reviews, particularly the five star reviews that he says are the only ones acceptable to him, he needs to provide five star service. Simply put, he did not.
His installer arrived this morning thirty minutes later than the time that Alex told me he would arrive. He cleaned the coils and closed the air handler in about an hour. $800 would have been a hefty bill for the hour or two of Alex's time and the hour of his tech's.
Alex has called and left two voicemails for me already today. Just so you know Alex, I'm not going to answer your calls.
Alex has, at least twice, provided his Yelp reviewers last names when it was not on their Yelp profile, and at least once has published a reviewer's home address in his responses. Alex, should you do this with me I will not only report you to Yelp, I will report you to the Better Business Bureau and the Department of Consumer Affairs Contractors State License Board. Also Alex, you should know that if your phone calls continue I will report you to the authorities for harassment. This also applies should you try to text my mobile phone.
Finally, Alex, you should know that none of this would be exposed on Yelp if you had not called me in response to my initial review. If I hadn't answered that call, you never would have returned, and none of this would have happened.
Sort his reviews before you decide. I know I learned a lesson here. Also, had he looked at the filter in the morning it could have been a vastly different outcome. read more
