A classic among locals, APD is considered to be THE hang-out spot for students and old ladies alike. It's a 24-hour diner, which is really nice. Even in the wee hours of the night, the staff are still pretty friendly and the food is still reliable. It's the kind of place you can go if you're craving pie or cheese fries at 2 AM and not feel guilty about not ordering a full meal. The food is mediocre I suppose -- nothing too special, but definitely not bad either. It's exactly what you'd expect from a diner. Their menu is very large and there's always a bunch of specials. Everything I've gotten has tasted pretty good -- I can't recall any bad experiences, and I've been here a LOT. I don't know what everyone's complaining about with the service. Like I said, I've been here literally dozens of times and I've had very, very little in the way of bad service. The only thing I can think of is that one of the waitresses in particular tends to be a bit grumpy. They have juke boxes next to the tables near the bar section, which no one really uses and don't always work, but they ad to the charm of the place. Our first visit to the airport diner in more than 18 years. We previously came when our daughter was in college at Kutztown university. This time we brought our three grandsons as we waited to get into crystal cave. The service was outstanding the three boys ages 13, 10 and seven loved the meal. The pancakes were "the best I've ever had" I highly recommend this as a family stop for any meal. read more

We stopped by the Airport Diner for a late lunch. We had last been to the diner in 2002 when my grandparents resided in the area. The exterior/interior decor did not appear to change. The diner was clean, and staff friendly. The food was tasty and very fast. There were three in our party, and the foot was delivered to our table in what seemed like 5-7 minutes. We were disappointed to learn that the Kutztown Airport had closed some years ago and is now abandoned. My wife and I had fond recollections of watching the aircraft and gliders from the wide windows of the diner. In general it was a pleasant experience to revive. read more

Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. I was expecting it to be good since it was very busy. French toast was good. Sausage was the stuff you buy frozen and throw in the microwave. Scrapple was flavorless. Muffins and pastries are prepackaged from the store, not home made. Scrambled eggs and home fries were okay. Service wasn't too bad. We were seated and served quickly. My sister stirred her coffee and then put the spoon in her mouth only to find someone else's leftover food particle on the spoon. Gag! It's always going to be the same food. You know exactly what to expect. I've come to Airport Diner after walking out on horrible experiences elsewhere. It's comfort food in restaurant form. It's been there for me thru the long haul of college. It was definitely easy on my wallet, as at least I didn't have to cook. The coffee is crap, the food is kind of average. Desperation and lack of $$ is what drives one to the Airport Dinner. The food, term used very broadly, is pretty awful. I feel sorry for the wait staff, who really are quite likable. Seriously, how hard is it for the cooks to take a little pride in their profession, as it were. Are they all former prison cooks? And what's with the owner, just hanging out like the customers invaded his living room? Does he have anything else to do but sit there with his cronies and talk really loudly? The APD gives diners a bad name-what, with the Hometown Diner 8 miles north on 222 or the Crossroads 10 miles away on rt. 61? Those two places have fresher, healthier food, more selection, and obviously take some pride in what they serve. It is hard to screw up breakfast, so that might be an o.k., but everything else? Oh kerensa...what's not to like? Enough. But I'll get to that in a minute. First, the trick here is to focus on the desirable/ tolerable as kerensa mentioned: 1. The airport next door does offer very cool views of small planes and helicopters taking off literally within a hundred feet of the parking lot. You can watch the pilots do preflight checks of flaps and engine as you sip coffee and watch the locals gain another 50 pounds on bland , creamy "Dutch" fare. Ok, ok, I've been accused of being a food snob more than once so in an effort to be fair, it is a diner with diner food, and there is more than enough taste to "get by." I get it. Pilots fly in to eat here on most nice weekends. UPDATE: The owner of the Airport Diner got greedy. He refused to sign a long term contract with the operator of the airport so the airport's flying days are over. Get ready for a an apartment complex or housing development on the runway. In my estimation, this will render the Airport Diner as just a more ordinary place to eat, but havoing said that, the locals love it and it is open 24/7. 2. Breakfast is what they do best. Although it could be improved dramatically with coffee that tastes like something and real maple syrup instead of brown corn syrup, the french toast is hot, soft, and thick, and the real, not instant-packet oatmeal makes for a healthy alternative. The Berks County waitresses' mantra of "do you want any meat with that...?" is repeated during every order. Berks Countians prefer meat with most meals. 3.As I said, the place is ALWAYS open--24/7. Except for Christmas, I have never seen it close although it may close on the fourth of July-- I can't recall. It is nice to drive by at anytime of day or night knowing I could find a place to eat. Now a quick review of krensa's oversights: 1. As you walk in the place you must run the gauntlet of often times, one of the smokiest smoking sections on the planet. The only thing that prevents many from reversing gears and running for the door as they gag smoke, is that they catch a glimpse of the non- smoking section that is a nicely furnished room with a panoramic view. If Pennsyltucky ever gets its act together and bans tobacco in public spaces as most civilized states have done already, AD will be all the better for it. UPDATE: All public spaces are now smoke free by law in PA! It is about time. 2. Kutztown can be a darned redneck place to hang out despite its so- called loveable Pennsylvania Dutch reputation. Don't get me wrong, there are some very nice people here and some of them are locals. But the "dutch" are actually of German heritage and don't be surprised if the conversation at the next table might include some interesting comments on social issues if you know what I mean. The same everywhere I guess. 3. The food is fair at best. It is diner food so don't expect anything else. Filling is often a term best used to describe dutch fare anywhere in eastern PA so don't be surprised or disillusioned by tour guide literature that promises wonderful Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. Although some recipes can be quite tasty, you won't find any of the nuances here or at most roadside stops, and bigger is better is often the compensation. So bring your own maple syrup and enjoy some tasty french toast, bacon and diner coffee. For the money, you can't beat it especially at three o'clock in the morning. UPDATE: As I mentioned, forget the airport in Airport Diner. The owners (not locals) did not get how cool this little airport was. They ignored the pleas from various groups including plane owners and finally subdivided the land--selling a huge parcel to Kutztown University who has little $ for deserving academic programs but plenty to buy more and more land. What is wrong with these people?! Ah well, the food is still not good enough to warrant any further attention anyway. UPDATE: The Airport Diner is under new management. The food is basically the same but I'm glad the guy who decided to end the airport's life as a working landing and takeoff point for small planes has moved on. That guy didn't get it. A note on my star ratings: These unless otherwise indicated, refer to food taste and quality only. That is why I go. Absolutely love this place. I go to KU and this is a perfect place to go if you want some decent inexpensive food. The waiters are for the most part very friendly. Weekend breakfast time is always very busy though! Open 24 hrs so it's great if you get hungry late at night. Popular place for students so it can be loud at times. read more

This is the dining food I grew up on. This place is opened 24/7 and is just perfect. Such quick service and (usually) friendly staff. The food is just what you're looking for from a diner and always done well. I've never not looked forward to APD food. Parking lot was empty at 4PM even though Kutztown Fair was going. Thought I was lucky, should have known better. Ate here 6 years ago and couldn't get a seat it was so crowded but worth the wait... that was 6 years ago. Today, ordered "special" Oyster Soup. It was literally warm milk with some oysters dropped in, no flavor at all. Worst of all, the oyster crackers they served were RANCID, YES RANCID! Returned them and requested Saltines, not rancid but sure were stale. The coconut cream pie was cheap thawed garbage, couldn't even cut the crust with a knife and couldn't get the taste of rancid crackers out of my mouth even with the cheap pie! Needless to say it will be another 6,8,10 years before I return (unless I see a packed parking lot and a waiting line out the door during folk festival). read more

Pretty good 24 hour diner. Everything you would expect of an American diner with some old fashion classic dishes added. The regular turkey club and melt version are great. They have good French fries and what more can you ask. This place is one of the only things open in this college town at night so keep that in mind if you want to avoid college kids. read more

It still looks and feels the same, and the menu choices are massive. Not sure how to rate as I have mixed feelings about this place. I got the stuffed peppers which was fairly good but I also got the corn fritters as a side and was confused when the waitress brought out 2 pancakes instead. Ate dinner here a while ago. Ordered salmon. Smelled like they got it out of a good restaurant's dumpster. Inedible! One of the employees was vacuuming the carpet while my son and I ate there. He worked his way over to us in the booth and told us to lift up our legs!!!!!!!!! We did and he vacuumed under the table as I watched in amazement. This place is awful!! You know, it's a diner. It's a place to get breakfast or to get a burger. The Airport burger is really excellent, their fries are hot and crisp. Their breakfasts are good, eggs, pancakes, etc. But do not stray there for dinner if you want a steak or chicken, or evening fair. It is a diner, take it for what it is. It IS open 24 hours, and that is a big plus if you get the muchies, but stick to what a diner does best. read more
