Amazing food and staff and conversations! Crab cakes and mint ice tea were to die for!

I read this restaurant's website and I thought this would be good, the special was Shepherds Pie that sounded wonderful to me. My problem started when I entered the front door where the sign " please wait to be seated", so I waited and read the menu. Two employees wiped tables and ignored me while I stood there at 6:00 pm, it would have been nice if I couldn't been served to simply say " no". It looks like a nice restaurant, except for the service that I encountered, no one likes to be ignored, and yes the customer will leave eventually. read more

Hostesses seemed a bit confused, but our group's server was awesome. She clearly knew the menu and aimed to excel. (Food is run-of-the-mill Pennsylvania Dutch, but you can't really screw up bland food, so no complaints. lol) read more

Excellent food! The three people in our party all loved every bite of their meals. We have never had such juicy and flavorful chicken and one stated that the Chicken Pot Pie was the best they ever had. The crab soup was absolutely delicious and just perfectly balanced in seasoning- just perfect for a dreary, rainy day. The corn fritters were amazingly tasty too with a crunchy exterior and the sweet, creamy corn inside. The portions were ample and reasonably priced, especially for the quality of the meals! Everything tasted fresh and was much better than what we expected! The wait staff was prompt, pleasant, and friendly. We didn't wait long for service and empty plates were swiftly removed without the feeling that anyone was hovering. While the ambiance of the location could use a bit of updating, like a retouch of paint, the entire experience was pleasant and worth the 40+ minute drive. While returning to GA from a trip to NY we met my daughter (Terry) and grandson (Logan) at the Deitsch Eck. It's in an old building with an incredible menu of selections - much like a diner.The service was good and the food enjoyable. read more

Warm welcome when we entered and were told there would be a 10 minute wait. After like 5 minutes we were seated. The waitress was kind and friendly. Took about 30-35 minutes to get dinner and it was amazing! This was our second visit. The first time I got the Luther- mmmmm delicious. Our meals were fantastic and the desert- OMG!! It's like nothing I've ever had! Think of your favorite pies and then think of them bigger, thicker and simply mouth watering!! Do yourself a favor and go have dinner here! read more

*did not try the food* but this place came through in a clutch when my daughter really needed to use the restroom on the way home. A rest stop wasn't for miles so we took the first exit where we were and luckily found this spot. We had already eaten so it was a shame we didn't try their food. The staff was super nice and the place, albeit small, was busy for a late afternoon spot. We will be making it a stop in the future...and it's a hop.skip.jump to the highway. My wife and I were looking for an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant while passing through Pennsylvania and, boy howdy, did we find one! These folks serve wonderful food and are extremely hospitable and efficient. It's just off I-78 and very easy to get to and then get back on your way. I had the combo and, in my case, that was a perfectly done smoked sausage locally made and a chicken breast with a cheese crab sauce which may be the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. It came with 2 sides. My wife had dessert and that was a coconut pecan pie. (and the better part of my order of fritters. Delicious.) The menu is large and varied so you're bound to find something that you like. Anyway, do yourself a favor if you're in the area and pay these folks a visit. You will not regret it. read more

Another one of those "hole in the wall" places. Everything we had was delicious! The next time we come, we will willingly pass entrees and go straight to dessert. They blew any restaurant desserts out of the water. I gave 4 stars because the service seems slow and it is a bit pricey, but on that same note it truly is homemade, soul warming, comfort food. We will definitely come again if we are in the area. Update 6/26/19 Service was excellent this time, food was amazing as always! This will be a definite stop every time we are in town. read more

I had a hamburger at the festival and it was boiled ..... it tasted and was the quality of the burger you would get from a cafeteria at an elementary school. Rude! I came mid week. The "hostess" greeted me with, "you'll have to wait until I set up this table." Wow, welcome. Then once that was done she disappeared to come back and say she had no tables available. I could sit at a 6-seater but if someone else came in I'd have to share. Um, no. if you miss your grandma's best cooking this place is the place to go. I don't think there is a better restaurant in the area within 50 miles. The food, is top quality. You can tell that they seek out the best ingredients to make everything they do. The portion size is very large and you will definitely have leftovers. Understand this is not a chain, it's a small town restaurant with good quality, homemade food and service so the interior promotes its heritage. We had the fritter sample, Shepard's pie (not greasy!), and the BEST Ruben sandwich (not fatty nor greasy). This was the perfect place to stop at lunchtime on our road trip to the Poconos. Very old school and cute. I wish I had had a chance to try the desserts! The Potato Filling was delicious. Bacon dressed salad was great but over dressed - just ask for it on the side. The apps are great - fritters - wow! Potato pancakes - so yummy, and HOT! Recommend the fresh sausage! To top it off, the sauerkraut is terrific. Perfect blend of sweet and sour. It's just the place to have good food on a trip, a much better choice than a chain! read more

We have frequented this adorable restaurant many times over the years. We didn't grow up here so appreciate the historical quaintness. Staff is always perfect. Food is plentiful and delicious. I love all the different sides you can order with your meal, which is a big plus for me. Great service! We had two different platters, one with sausage and a crab cake and the other with haddock and a crabcakes. Our sides were corn fritters, apple fritters, salad with homemade croutons, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Overall I wasn't into how literally everything was fried, but the flavors were good. The reason for 4 stars would be the pie! We had a rhubarb crumb pie and a blueberry raspberry custard. Very very good. I couldn't finish all of mine. I don't see myself craving anything from here except the pie. Alcohol isn't served here, but there's Bitchbeer. Birchbeer tastes like rootbeer btw, I'm not sure why our hostess couldn't manage to communicate that. It seemed like an obvious description, but she kept saying "I can't describe it". My husband and I spent our morning at the Reading Railroad Museum and we were looking for a non-chain restaurant to eat lunch. We found this place via great reviews online, and we weren't disappointed! We had the mozzarella sticks to start with, and I had the Reuben sandwich with a side of Dutch fries, while my husband got the fried chicken sandwich with a side of macaroni salad. Very filling, delicious, and great value for the price range of the menu. Service was also very good. The only regret is that we were too full to try the homemade pies. read more

I would give it zero. Who are these people rating it high and giving wow reviews?? I did not have dessert so maybe that's all they got going on. But this place is not "authentic Penn. Dutch" its authentic crap fried food that will make you gain 100 pounds. How is chicken Parmesan or all the other fake Italian food authentic Penn Dutch?? Or the rest of the heart-attack food. The entire menu was a choice of bad fried food or more bad fried food. I asked if the crab sandwich was good and the reply was "sure". So ummm no thank you. My husbands fries were limp and greasy with canned apple sauce taste as the other side. And then an over fried limp hard haddock fish with industrial tartar sauce. My burger was so over done and tasted like it came from a frozen patty pack lacking ZERO taste and onion rings with freezer burn. Please don't tell me this place wins the hamburger contest they are advertising. And TMI but I also had bad cramps after eating and was basically sitting on the toilet a while scared to leave the bathroom. read more

Let me start by saying some of these reviews are pretty harsh. We stopped here after a hiking trip at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary by recommendation of our group leader. I came expecting nothing fancy, and some good stick-to-your-ribs food (I'm from NYC and have eaten at top 50 world restaurants). They delivered. I had the scrapple with apple butter and sides of chow chow and potato fritters. Some other members of my group had the meatloaf, fresh sausage and potato filling with bacon dressing (wish I got that one), and said it was very good for the (quite low) price. For my meal, it was my first time having scrapple and I like to be open minded to new foods. The texture was pretty firm, but I'm used to eating English black pudding or blood sausage, which is also refined with oats/grains and onions. The apple butter helped contrast any dryness and added a nice tang. The chow chow was actually the standout, delicious!!! You can tell they pickle it themselves by the taste. Had the shoofly (molasses) pie for dessert, which was terrific. Moral of the story for 1-Star reviews on this thread: You don't go inland to the Pennsylvanian country and order a crab cake. Those are crowd pleasers to make profit margin. Leave that to New England and MD. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Eat what the locals eat. read more

Except for church suppers and grandma's kitchen, you'll be pressed to find PA Dutch fare as authentic as that being served at Deitsch Eck. Start with a bottle of Reading Draft sarsaparilla and the fritter sampler. Whatever entree you order (like the chicken & waffles, or the smoky ham steak, or even big, juicy fried shrimp) be sure to load up on the incredible side dishes. And save room for pie (apple crumb and coconut cream'll knock your socks off). Add to the food the friendly deitsch speaking staff (and patrons) and charming hex wall art, and you have a one-of-a-kind regional culinary experience. The place can get crowded. On one Saturday night, we waited close to an hour behind big parties. (The no-nonsense hostess informed us that they arrived without reservations.) But we've also had the place entirely to ourselves. Be mindful that Deitsch Eck is only open for dinner Wed-Sat from 4 to 8pm and Sunday from 11:30am to 7pm. The husband and I find eating here worth every minute of the beautiful drive along the Maiden Creek to Lenhartsville. It has also been the perfect ending to a day hiking nearby Hawk Mountain. Deitsch Eck is great for families too, and we're weaning our nieces and nephews off of Friendly's by bringing them here. read more

If looking for authentic Amish food, that's served in what feels like an old house with a tiny kitchen in the back, Deitsch Eck is your spot. They serve scrapple, which is just fried mixed meat, but even though I was not sure what it was, it tasted delicious dipped in apple butter. My wife and I have come here for years even before we were together. We really like the service and the family atmosphere here. I enjoy the Pittsburgh chicken salad-I wish the chicken fingers were not chopped and processed. I've never been much of a McNuggets fan. We highly recommend the potato filling with bacon dressing. The tossed salad is fresh and the fries are fresh cut. My wife says the pork and sauerkraut is great. Also, she says, don't forget to try the Luther. IMO the burger meat in my Calif was disappointing bc it seemed pre-pressed and possibly frozen. We'll be back,tho. I am surprised by the many positive reviews but I wanted to share our experience. This was a quick meal stop for us on during our road trip couple of weeks ago. We stopped for lunch and the place was pretty busy. Looks like lots of locals go there. Good for them. As for us, we ordered 4 different entrees and each left much to be desired. Crab cake tasted very fishy. My locally made sausage looked so sad on the plate. One link sliced lengthwise and grilled and served with horseradish sauce with a side of green beans (I would guess it was frozen prior to being boiled). Other two entrees were the same as well - very basic for the price they charged. One star is really for the wonderful service offered by the young girls working there. Each was very friendly, pleasant and courteous. I wish the very best for the place to thrive, but as for us, very disappointing experience. read more

Best restaurant on the planet! We drive over an hour to get there and try to do it as often as we can. We've been eating there for over 20 years and have never had a bad meal. Putting a fritter sampler on the menu was brilliant. I could never decide which ones to order and now I can have them all as well as two other sides! Very glad I asked for recommendations for local flavor restaurant from the clerk at Cabellas which led my wife and I here. First - you can't say anything bad about a restaurant where your stuffed with good food and the bill is only $36. Well maybe you could, but certainly not from me. Just wanted to try something local and we certainly hit the jackpot here. Have to try the pork chop dinner. Can get two fresh or two smoked and for people like me who can't make up their mind they serve one of each. Both very good, but my taste goes more for the smoked. Something about my taste for cured meats. Wife had Scrapple and Meatloaf combination. Combination are allowed when you just want to taste everything. Scrapple is milder than the store bought version. A little less liver taste and lower in salt, but good nonetheless. Meatloaf very good, but the show stopper for us was the potato stuffing. Never heard of it before and had to try as a side. Wow, combination of bread mashed potatoes and other stuff. Great - I suggest getting gravy or sauce on the side and not on stuffing since the stuffing itself has a unique taste that the gravy masks. Other sides were 2-pickled eggs, chutney, lettuce with a bacon sauce (fantastic) and a sampler of fritters. Oh yea two cups of soup. Bean with bacon and chicken noodle. Go with the bean. It is great. We will be back. Great atmosphere and service....... And did I mention the price for all this. Desert looked great, but could not even attempt. No alcohol. read more

I was a little reluctant to eat here, being it was one of only 2 restaurants in the entire town and sometimes those kind of places stay in business just because there are no other options. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. Food was typical PA Dutch fare with huge portions and service was friendly. Lots of desserts, hot cider, and local root beer was a big plus. Oh yeah, and there's a burger on the menu that's served on a glazed donut instead of a bun. I know what I'm getting next time. read more
