What a joke. This is a bar with bar food and nothing fancy. Service was hilarious. Just don't expect much and you'll be thrilled.

Absolutely awful. Burger was soggy and tasteless. Fries were cold and soggy. The cheese stick appetizer was the best part, except that they came with the meal... and were cold. My husband ordered the Reuben burger but received a Reuben sandwich...which he kept because he didn't want to wait another 30 minutes. I am diabetic and HAD to eat, but didn't even want to take the other half my burger home. We don't have a dog to feed it to. Never again. read more

Food is great and nice portions, but BEWARE. Their own website states their sandwiches come with fries and coleslaw - this is absolutely inaccurate. They are NOT included with orders as their menu shows. They did NOT mention this when we ordered and did not seem to really care when i contacted them to ask why they we not included. read more

There is not much to say about this place. I came in twice while on a layover for work. First night I had a Caeser while my coworker had wings. Keep in mind she and I had just been delayed and worked a 14 hour day, so we were starving! I liked it the first night. Next day my twin bro and his fiancé come in from Lansing to visit me before I fly out. After spending all day together and failing to find anywhere to eat in downtown Detroit I suggest we go here since it's close to my hotel and I heard the sandwiches are ginormous. Let me say this was a terrible idea and my brother will no longer let me pick where to eat :-( I'm assuming the night before I was jaded by having been starving that I thought my food was good. I ordered the hot wings as did my brother. His fiancé ordered their chicken salad sandwich, which according to the menu is their most popular item. Food came out pretty quick. Our waitress we didn't see much at all other than gaming out order and dropping the food off. Also if I remember correctly you have to pay for bottled water. I opted for iced tea since I'm paying for water I figured I might as well just get tea. BAD IDEA! It was he powdered iced tea and it hurt my throat every sip I took. That's how acidic it was. About the food... Well brother and I could not eat our wings. They tasted like they were the pre-breaded packaged frozen wings. In fact I have no doubt in my mind that's what they were. The sauce on them was a mix of what seemed to be pancake syrup and Tabasco (I am not joking it tasted like that was the ingredient combo). We just couldn't bring ourselves to eat more than two. What a waste of money and food. The chicken salad sandwich his fiancé ordered while huge, was absolutely horrible and also came out room temp. Aside from being tossed in way too much mayo, it was also made with canned chicken and jarred pickle relish. No seasonings, no other ingredients... just canned chicken, mayo and relish. If you like bland iceberg lettuce salads, plastic-like American cheese, and being made to pay for bottled water, then this place is for you. The food was not the absolute worst, but it was not the hype of other reviews. Also, what's with the required bottled water? Flint is pretty far away, so I'm not worried about lead in the tap water. The portions were generous and the food was cheap, but I want more from my eating experience than a bunch of empty calories filling my stomach. Used to go here all the time after work. One of the workers told me to never order anything unless it was fried. Red flag right away. Also would get physically ill anytime I drank draft beer there. Didn't put two and two together right away but realized days after I had one or two beers there I was so sick! Pretty sure they don't clean their lines. Overall can be a decent time and prices are low, but I now don't eat there and only drink bottle beer. (A friend also go a mixed drink with flys in it) come to find out they were in the liquor bottle. So I really don't come here anymore unless that's where everyone is going. read more

The Restaurant has taking a turn towards the South. I was looking forward to eating at this restaurant. It started with the Chairs felt like sitting on a board. Then I was told that water was not offered unless you purchase bottle water. The waitress treated me like I wasn't involved in her high school clicks. The sandwich only comes with what you see! No, fries or anything! You can pay extra for that!.....$3.00! The sandwich was good but I could get a real meal for the same price at other restaurants. This place was ok, it was typical bar food. Staff was good though. The burger I had was quite dry and the chicken philly, isn't what you think it is, it's more or a chicken sandwich. You'd think it would be like a Philly cheesesteak style with the meat shredded up, but it's not, it's a patty on a bun which was a bit disappointing. Fries were excellent though. Hungry after work. Found this place was close. Ordered over the phone a pastrami on grilled bread with Swiss and mustard. Got to the restaurant about 20 min after. I see one employee passing back and forth behind bar. I told her I was there for a pick up. She told she would let the person working to go that I was here. Friendly atmosphere. Large space with patio. I'll repeat what others have said. This is a BAR with good food. Don't expect white table cloths and 5 star service. I got a cheddar bacon burger on a pretzel bun with fries. I'm trying to do KETO so this was a cheat meal for me. The burger was good and the fries and pickle topped it off. I added mushrooms to it as well. Really big burger. My only complaint was that I couldn't pick it up to eat it as the lower bin was so soggy with grease. This actually helped my cause since then I wasn't going to eat the bun anyway. I ended up screwing myself because the fries were so good I ate almost all of them. Cheat meal indeed. We met a friend here last night. What a mistake. The tables were dirty and sticky. I used water from the glass of water we ordered and the paper towels provided on the table. 2 of the menus we had said that fires and cole slaw came with the sandwiches but when we gave our order the waitress told us those were old menus and it was just a sandwich and pickle for he same price. We ordered a pastrami on pumpernickel. It was a hamburger bun. The meat and sauce were good but we ate with a fork. Our friend ordered the ruben on pumpernickel and it came on a very light bread cut an inch thick (both slices). When she tried to pick it up the bread fell apart. She had to pick out the insides and eat them with a fork. It was a huge sandwich but BIG doesn't mean good! I asked the waitress for more water and she brought me a bottled water. She said that was the only way they supplied water - in a bottle that had to be paid for. She wouldn't refill my glass. Two of us took our glasses up to the bar and asked the bartender to refill them, which she did reluctantly. Can't figure out why we got nice glasses of ice water when we first ordered. Guess that they didn't like that we wern't ordering beer. We won't be going back there ever! read more

If you don't have time to read a lengthy review I can sum it up in 7 words for you, On The Next Episode of Restaurant Impossible. For those that would like the full version I would encourage you to read on. Right off the bat the first thing that hits you is how dirty this place is. Maybe that is why they keep it so dark in here. I'm confident that any burst of light would send rats and creepy crawlies scrambling in all directions. I hate a place where you don't know if it's, wait to be seated or seat yourself and this is exactly what Wheat and Rye is. After standing at the freezing cold entrance for probably 5 minutes and making eye contact with every employee except the cook we cautiously approached the closest table and sat down already slightly annoyed. Service was friendly but infrequent. The greeting took a long time, refills took a long time and we were never informed that the waters we ordered were $1.25 EACH. Seriously? For water? The portions are huge, that is true but I'd sacrifice a lot of quantity for a little more quality. We paid $10.95 for a pizza that I am pretty sure started off as a frozen Tombstone. The corned beef was so salty it made my butt hole pucker up and the burger in the Patty Melt I'm certain was made with the lowest quality grade of beef that is allowed to be consumed by human beings. Bathrooms are also disgusting to the point that I almost let my son pee his pants because that seemed the lesser of the two evils. I love a dive bar and it's tough to be so critical but all my favorite dive bars have some redeeming quality. They may be dirty but they have good food or great beer. Wheat and Rye has nothing going for it in my opinion. So, unless you are already drunk and are looking for the maximum amount of poor quality food for $9.95 I would suggest you head to the Big Boy down the street where you might not get a giant salty sandwich but you certainly won't have to pay water. read more

Let me start by saying that I drink a lot of water. I don't like drinking soda or alcohol very often. Water. Thats my drink of choice. The Wheat and Rye does NOT offer complimentary water. It offers bottles of Nestle Pure and Absopure (super cheap brands) for like $1.75 each. Who the heck are they kidding? Isn't it a law that restaurants must provide complimentary water? Well, I went here to meet some out of town friends. I didn't choose the location. It was FREEZING in the building and the bathroom was even colder. Our food came out in shifts taking more than 10 minutes for all of us to get it. The sandwiches were ENORMOUS but what good is a giant sandwich or burger if it's not cooked right or is nearly impossible to pick up. Medium rare burger came out well done. Paying for water is lame especially if the waitress doesn't tell you until she brings it out. Pizza was just plain terrible. Good point? Uhhh.. The football game was on. read more

Upon further review (and another visit) i have to drop this down a star. The reason is the i feel like the quality of meat isn't as great as the top deli's in Metro Detroit. I was referred to this place - with the premise being how huge the portions where for the price (and was told the food was good), etc. etc. Well - sometimes size does not matter (at least in the food world......). Let me start with the location. The bar sits off the road a bit and has a bit of a dark / uninviting feel to the outside. If it wasn't for the cars parked out front (admittedly there were quite a few patrons) - you might think the place was shuddered and closed down. It is a straight forward bar (in general terms). Although it does have a rather large seating area; this isn't the place for a general dining experience (nothing wrong with that - it just wasn't my initial understanding). In my hay day - I probably would have viewed it as a great bar stop in general (food being more of an after-thought). So if you look at it from a pure bar perspective - your opinion might differ from mine. On to the food - Wheat and Rye was touted to me for this reason. Admittedly - I only sampled a handful of items. So take it for what it is worth. I will say the menu looks enticing (from a straight burger, sandwich, bar food perspective). The even use words like "Famous Sandwich" or "All Star Burgers" - so who wouldn't be jazzed up to down a few of the items; right? We tried a sampling of the Reuben Sandwich, Hoagie, and Superbird. This was take out for us so there is not much to report on that front. Service was straight forward and satisfactory. We ordered in house and waited. No complaints on cook time or anything on that front. The food was in gigantic portions. I mean that quite literally. Sometimes people say "large portions" and it is not entirely true. I even asked the waitress about this; she didn't even have to say much - her subtle "ughh yay" gesture got the point across. If you were to form an opinion solely on size of meal / portions - Wheat and Rye might be an award winner and be revered in restaurant lore (heck - maybe that is why there are so many loyal followers to begin with). But - like I stated earlier - size doesn't always matter and you still have to satisfy the person (or in this case taste buds and my stomach - this is till food we are talking about here - let's keep it PG people!). Maybe I made the wrong assumption - but the sandwiches were not grilled / oven baked. It was just general - cold - straightforward bread. I really think that could make a huge difference in the taste and maybe that is my mistake for "not requesting" - but who the hell wants plain (cold - for all intents) sandwich when downing a few bears. For that matter; I can't imagine a stomach full of beer and then trying to "house" one of these mammoth sandwiches. Further - there just really wasn't any distinctive taste or flavor. I kept waiting for that "something" to hit me and it never did. The closest thing was the Reuben (when you have Russian Dressing - it's hard to screw up) - but even at that - it lacked the balance in overall ingredients to make it fantastic. At the end of the day - these were just simple sandwiches at the core with nothing to else to offer. It really was just overkill all the way around with the premise being the portions. I'm a French Fry guy too - and even the amount of skins was nauseating (not to mention they were that good - a dry wimpy fry that tasted like it was re-heated from yesterday's leftovers). Cost was moderate. Probably about what you would expect. But otherwise - I really just wasn't impressed. I'm not going to kill Wheat and Rye here - it might be I should try them one more time and do something different- or asked for the sandwich to be made a bit differently. But - have to be honest that when I analyze everything from every angle - I honestly don't believe they will raise the bar because I think there premise is fundamentally wrong in focusing on portion size (as opposed to quality food in general). i would give the sandwiches alone five stars because of the size and price. however, the service here kind of sucks. i normally don't write reviews mentioning much about the service but i came here before and waited over an hour just to receive the bill from the waitress. she never ever checked on us after bringing us our food, instead she was off chatting with whom i am assuming is the manager or owner. in that case, it's even worse to have someone above you who is okay with you not servicing your guests. also, there is no free water. they only serve bottled water which is kind of dumb but hey, to each his own. the sandwiches and seasoned fries are great though! i think i will only order carryout from now on, though. read more

Not many selections when it comes to food. They have a ton of sandwiches, but mine was so dry I had to get dip for it. The Wait staff took a while to check on us. The hamburger was still red inside. I went here on the 26th one night before a flight to KC, I got food poisoning the next day. I had a Bacon Cheeseburger on a Pretzel bun and fries. The fries were soggy and not crispy, but the burger was good. There were three things that could have caused this, the first two was the raw onions and tomatoes that came with the meal or undercooked meat (I asked for it Medium Rare, and maybe they didn't cook it to the right temp). The other was the water. To those complaining that they paid $1.25 for bottled water, maybe there is a reason why they don't give you tap water. The server gave me the tap water and I am wondering if that didn't cause my poisoning. Whatever it was, the flight back to Kansas City was the worst experience I've had.
