There was a party of 10 that arrived 15 minutes after we were seated. Their appetizers and sushi arrived immediately, approximately 10 minutes before ours. I was quite baffled... I even made the joke... "Did they go to Japan to make our roll & nigiri?" Overall, I would probably not return. The waiters were nice but the sushi chef's were very slow. Maybe because they weren't Japanese and were baffled by nigiri's? Whatever the reason, nigiri's should not take over 30 minutes to serve, especially when there are only 3 tables. Time is priceless... This is our daughter's favorite Japanese restaurant in Sonoma County and she eats here often. Her go-to entree is the chirashi (sushi rice with sliced fish on top). No other local restaurant has been able to duplicate the variety and quality of the fish yet. As always she wanted to celebrate her birthday dinner here, so we were happy to meet her. The restaurant went through a remodel during the pandemic and it feels very open and inviting. We were seated by the window and Max came over to greet us and take our order. We think Max may have gone home because Ethan took over our table after our order was taken. We ordered the chirashi (of course), 3-item bento box with saba, tempura and California roll and a 2-item bento box with tempura and teriyaki chicken. The dinners come with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious except the tempura was overdone a bit so the outside was a little too crispy and it hurt the inside of our mouth. We had a pleasant meal, nothing special to commemorate our daughter's birthday as in year's past, but she was a happy camper to get her chirashi. During the pandemic we often got take out here and big bags were filled with our large orders for five adults. We were always impressed that they would get everything right. There was only one time a salad was missing but if you consider all the different entrees we've ordered, the majority that came with soup and salad, I would give them an outstanding rating for their accuracy. We are fortunate to have a Japanese restaurant in Santa Rosa that serves up very fresh seafood and a lovely variety of Japanese dishes with a smile. read more

Came here for lunch on Sunday and it was pretty chill. I had a great experience. Inside felt clean and upkept. They let you choose between a booth or regular table seating. There is self serve ginger and pickled radish on the table with plates next to it. Never seen that before at other places. Jumping Ebi was good but nothing too special. Go Go roll was really delicious. The extra tempura flakes made it taste almost like a deep fried roll. Both rolls tasted really fresh too. Nabe udon was very comforting on a cold rainy day. The soup tasted a bit sweet. The chicken was also grilled and that's the first time I've ever had grilled chicken in a Nabe udon. Definitely a game changer. read more

The food was delicious and the presentation was amazing. It's under new ownership, with a new chef/owner, and you could just taste the extra specialness of the food. There's a special new menu that has three or four creations by the new chef, which we tasted them all, and they were absolutely wonderful. This was a great choice for sushi, the ambiance inside was very chill, the food was delicious, and the raspberry tea was great. Solid quality of rolls. And the edamame was so good! The waiter was very attentive with our table. They checked in every so often about our meal and if we needed anything. The price is on the higher end as our drinks cost about 3-5$ and the rolls are about 11-14$ but we thought it was really worth it. Another great meal at Aji. We decided to go get some dinner this last Friday at about 5:15/5:30. The restaurant was pretty empty when we first got there but it quickly filled up. The fish is always so fresh and each item has its distinct taste. The chirashi is such a great meal to share. The green salad was a little watery this time but the sunomono salad was fresh and crisp. We had a really strange experience today. We came in around 2:40 and were seated but didn't realize they closed at 3? The door doesn't reflect this. It said it was open from 12:00-9:00 pm. Anyway, we were still served. The server was nice but we did feel awkward being the only customers in there.. I ordered the salmon teriyaki and it wasn't cooked all the way and was still raw in the middle. We ended up asking for to-go containers for our food because although the server was nice, It just felt really uncomfortable trying to enjoy our meal while he stood right by the table like he couldn't wait for us to leave. I placed an order online to pick up some sushi and a seaweed salad. The order was being completed as I walked in and was handed to me over right away - excellent timing! I found my Philly roll to be fresh and delicious. The seaweed salad was mixed with what appeared to be cucumber, but delicious nevertheless. I somehow forgot the name of the second roll, but it was good as well. The only recommendation I would have for the restaurant is to provide a bit more wasabi and soy sauce packets. We have eaten here a few times in the past and it has always been good, not great but good. Unfortunately this last time not so much. The sushi just didn't taste fresh. Granted it is winter right after the holidays so things are slow, but the salmon and tuna both had a fishy taste. I appreciate that you can place your order online -- a nice COVID-safe feature. My food was ready for pickup in a timely manner, even on a busy Saturday night. When I went to pick up my food, the staff were super friendly and helpful. My takeout included chopsticks, napkins, and soy sauce, which was a nice touch. The sushi is high quality and they have a wide selection of rolls. If you're not in the mood for sushi, they even have ramen and udon. I was surprised at how comprehensive their menu is! On Thursday, April 4, my daughter and I had to say good-bye to a beloved cat at the nearby VCA PetCare. I decided to take us both out for Japanese food because Japanese food is comfort food for me. We both ordered the beef udon bowls and kaarage. Everything was perfect and delicious. The beef udon bowls were fantastically delicious and the karaage, although a trifle overcooked, was mostly tender and quite tasty. This was our second time there--the first time was the day before when we had left our cat for some medical procedures. The service was absolutely fantastic that night--friendly and attentive but not too attentive. The wait staff all seemed happy. The service on Thursday was still excellent, though the wait staff was more aloof, which is fine. I highly recommend this restaurant--the food is fresh and delicious and the ambiance is clean and quiet. read more

This might be the best Japanese food in Santa Rosa. Dinner last night was remarkably tasty. I ate the bento box with Ton Katsu pork and a variety of generous cuts of sushi. With the starter of cloudy white miso soup, big salad and free edamame (Open your yelp app and check in, the free offer pops open - a variety of appetizers are offered, choose one priced below $10) the dinner was proportioned big enough to satisfy my manly hunger, I had skipped lunch. Priced at $18.95 for dinner, or save $6 and order this for lunch $12.95. Bambie had a fish medley roll that was cucumber wrapped. Rice amount in the roll was low, it was about the fish. It made her very happy. Beer & wine selection is small. Servers were gracious, informative and timely. Dinner came out quick. Dining room is a little too dark and dismal. Concrete floor is ugly. It does feel clean enough. The noise level was tolerable. TV set above the sushi bar had the sports channel broadcasting the Giants vs. Dodgers baseball game, sound turned down. I've eaten at all the Japanese restaurants in Sonoma county. Of course Hana in Rohnert Park is the fanciest and arguably has the most refined food. But the prices there are more than double of AJI.
