Very very disappointed today!!!! Aj's cafe great food. But todays host was unprofessional and looked as if she hated being there working or something in her life made her mad however, she should not take it out on patrons of that restaurant because they're lucky we go there. I don't know if I'll go there again anytime soon. But the worst part is when we asked to speak to a manager they said the manager would not be back till Sunday when I asked to speak to somebody in charge of the restaurant when the manager is gone, they said that nobody is there to help me however, they put somebody on the phone just to feel avoid. So to the owners of AJ café on gear Road in Turlock please reach out to me because I like to share my experience with you is very important. We all have bad days and we all have emotions however, we also have to wear a different hat for different situations and when you go to work in a business where you're dealing with customers you need to be polite you need to be welcoming and you need to smile because then if they don't the restaurant is uninviting and that can be contagious. It is evident don't have a meeting with your employees sit somewhere and look at their body language and ask yourself truly if you were a customer do you see some thing that can be improved in the way your employees behave and their demeanor and their body language? again please do not defend your restaurant and do not defend your employees. As I stated the food is great I love going there but I don't need to have somebody with a bad attitude moving their eyes around like I'm wasting their time when I'm trying to make choices for my food or when I go get my receiptand I try to pull the receipt from the machine because they were not attentive to me and then they teared off and throw it at me. Freshly squeezed orange juice!!!??? Oh whatttt ??!!!! And I can totally get it served as a mimosa ($4.99)... even better!!! Mimosas are also served all day. Total plus and super delicious. I was totally hoping they would do bottomless mimosas but this is so not the place for that. This is a nice little diner aimed to served families. There was tons of little kids running around during my visit. The service is pretty attentive but the food took a bit longer than I thought to come out, it was super bowl Sunday though so I will give them a break for that. I had two little kids on my table which were getting a bit anxious waiting for their food. We asked the waitress for some color crayons so they could color their coloring sheet and none were provided. Oh well, no biggie, thank goodness for iPhone technology and games. As for the food, not too shabby. I ordered the mile high platter from their special menu ($10.25). It consisted of a biscuit at the bottom, topped with a sausage patty and then drenched with country gravy. I loved that I had more than enough gravy to go with the whole meal item. It had a side of has brown potatoes as well. The menu is pretty diner basic. We have been eating breakfast here every weekend for a couple years now and my favorite thing about this place is the consistency. We drive from Ceres to eat here. The food is always good, especially the eggs. These chefs are the masters of egg omelets!! Perfectly made every time. It gets really busy at times but worth the wait. The servers are all incredibly nice and work really hard to keep up with this busy restaurant. read more

I happened to be in the area around breakfast time and did a quick search for a breakfast burrito and came along this place. Normally 4 stars and near under sketch me out but my to go burrito was perfect. I ordered it with the gravy on the side thinking I wouldn't like the gravy but I added gravy to every other bite and it totally hit the spot. Not to mention the salsa on the side was also a plus, it was the right amount of flavors but lacks that kick I like in my salsa. "Pick any table along this side.", she says. Well, every table has leftover pieces of food and coffee stains on it. I wonder which seat we should pick. I ponder and pick the smallest coffee stained one. The servers were not friendly at all - when asked about substitutions, you get stared at like you're from another planet. I asked 3x about substituting tomatoes for some mushrooms but ended up getting tomatoes anyway. I ate the omelette and country potatoes. Their ranch is runny/watery but it helped with the country potatoes since they were bland. Getting a server to return to your table was difficult. The place was moderately busy but I saw 6 women walking around - I thought it was sufficiently staffed but who knows. This was my 1st time here with my son. We found this place on yelp and decided to try it. I'm not sure I'll go here again. I felt that if you weren't a "regular", you weren't treated the same. I feel the food is overpriced a bit for the bland taste it had. I really do have mixed feelings about this place. Maybe if I try it when it's less busy? On a different day? Hard to say. I can usually find the good in food even when it's at its worse, but I could barely get a word in trying to convince myself the food received is okay. I don't know what went wrong but the French toast was vile. It did not look like any of the pictures I saw online when looking to eat here!!! I saw one hair and assumed it was my boyfriends and then saw TWO so I just stopped eating it. Really gross of me to see the good in food and my lesson was learned. This morning I took the family out for breakfast. Most of the time my meals are very good. This time I was disappointed with first the cook for sending out a burnt order of potatoes. Second the server who allowed this dish to be served. My country potatoes were crazy burnt and nasty. While my cheese that was topped off was still freezer cold. Try this place because of the Yelp reviews and I love mom and pop diners l. Came on Friday and it was packed due to Veterans' day. Okay place nothing I ate was super great or even memorable. Service was really slow. I had to ask for napkins and silverware so I could eat my salad.. Plenty of people working so not sure if they were throw off due to having more then normal Friday lunch crowd or this was a standard slow poke service.. I think our waitress had things on her mind today..came back maybe once to do a refill and it was not what we originally order for drinks. None of the staff or our wsitress were friendly. I like this place, especially for breakfast. The portions are good sized, and usually served rather quickly. Several items on the menu, as well as thier ever changing list of specials are very good. Service here is friendly and attentive, although at times they appear overstaffed and check on the tables a little too much. Thier French Toast Deluxe combo, Breakfast burritos, and Biscuits and gravy combo are among my favorites here. Breakfast is my meal of choice here, however their diner style fare lunch and dinner items are also worth a try. It is usually difficult to say that a breakfast burrito is delicious since none really stand out but this one definitely has its own category. You will not be disappointed if you try it. The only reason i knocked down half a star was because they forgot to put enough gravy on my biscuits and gravy order, so when it came time to grub, i was left with a biscuit and a half without anymore gravy to accompany them. My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting AJ's Cafe & Grill. It is a step back in time in a good way. The restaurant is decorated with signs that lifted our spirits. I joked with who I assumed is the owner about the sign that said if you are grumpy you will be charged $10 for putting up with you. I told him that they should up it to twenty. That's definitely my husband's and my sense humor after having worked in restaurants ourselves. It is good to see that someone still has a sense of humor after all this Covid trouble that we have all been enduring! BTW my husband is diabetic and I have high blood pressure just wear a mask and shield, they won't throw you out. Lol! Now onto the main point of this review, the food! The food is fantastic. It takes me back to a simpler time. I had the old Southern favorite, Chicken fried steak. This is one of my go to comfort foods. We all need some comfort right now. It comes with two choices of sides. I chose split pea soup and mashed potatoes with gravy. I must say that this rivals my Southern mother's chicken fried steak which I am sadly not too good at. The spilt pea soup is better than my own which I am told is pretty good. So if you are in the mood for some good down home cooking give AJ's a try. You won't be sorry! After a wonderful Turlock Halloween with one of my close friends we all make breakfast plans that night. (You know why!) Nicki suggests Aj's! Holy crap, you walk in and it smelled freaking delicious! I got the linguisa breakfast and a side of biscuits and gravy! So bomb. Sausage was cooked perfectly and the biscuit wasn't hard as a rock! Hallelujah! I honestly forget what my friends had, but I know all of their plates were clean when they were done. I won't ever forget the OJ though. You could totally tell it was fresh squeezed and I honestly think I said, "this is the best OJ I have ever had." I need to go back here, now that I think about it! I just happened to be in Turlock, CA this past Saturday getting some work done on my car. After doing some research on YELP, we chose this place for breakfast while we were waiting for our car to be done. The first thing I noticed was the unfriendly reception we received when we walked in. At least 5 servers looked at us with blank stares and didn't say a thing. Since the sign up front said wait to be seated-- that's what we did. After 5 or so minutes, we were seated in the corner, and given menus to look over. I chose the 2 egg breakfast (over-medium) with sausage patties and hash browns. I did not like the hash browns- they were soggy and under seasoned. I should have went with the country potatoes. My wife ordered the biscuits and gravy , and they were delicious. The biscuits were freshly made in-house and the gravy had a good amount of pepper infused throughout. The only thing I noticed was that the gravy gets cold fast-- so eat fast. I wish I could say the customer service got better throughout our meal-but it didn't. The server came back once to drop off the check-- that's it! However, the food did come out fast. Although the place was busy, we were eating inside of 10 minutes. Bottom line, the name of this place is deceiving. Cafe and Grill sounds nice right? I would say this is more like a diner than a cafe or grill. If you are in the mood for biscuits and gravy-- check it out. Otherwise- there has to be better options (even in Turlock). read more
